    HANDS, HANDS HANDS! I wish I could go back in time and tell my 16-y-o self to put sunscreen on my hands EVERY DAY! Once you hit 40ish, you can inject all kinds of whatever in your face and laser the hell out of it if you so choose, but your hands, neck and cleavage will give away your real age every time. Think of how often your hands are on a steering wheel getting blasted by sunlight. I hope any 20-somethings who are watching this video will start putting sunscreen on their hands, necks and chests (along with faces) religiously. Your 40-something-year-old self will thank you. ;)

    I highly recommend Korean sunscreens. Western sunscreens make me break out so bad (even the salon stuff that makes a giant hole in your wallet after you buy it). I love the innisfree sunscreens, they're so light on the skin and goes well under makeup and can be found cheap on ebay. I have been using spf everyday on my skin for about a year now (yes, everyday), and it does make a huge difference even if I'm only 22 years old and free from wrinkles. The skin looks more clear, it feels softer to the touch and the best part: I feel more safe from skin cancer. Remember the back of your neck if you wear your hair up, the ears and the neck. If you wear low cut tops then always put it on where your skin is exposed. From observing middle aged women I can clearly tell that the chest area is where sun damage and aging hits hard. The top of your hands is easy to forget, but they age badly as well from the sun exposure. Thankfully there's now handlotions with spf around on the market, and that's a huge pluss :) Thank you Wayne for informing people about this important topic. Being tan looks good after a holiday out in the sun, but skincancer is deadly and being healthy is more important than being vain.

      I so agree re: chest, back of neck and hands. I wish more hand lotions contained sunscreens, and I urge people to use driving gloves and keep them in their car, because your hands (esp. the left) get a ton of exposure from driving. Now I know why ladies wore gloves, big hats and used sun umbrellas in the past - not so much to avoid skin cancer, but to keep skin youthful looking.

    Good video, I've been using a factor 50 sunscreen 365 days a year since I was about 18 ( that was 1979) I have never ever had a suntan, I much prefer to be an English Rose, now at 54 yrs old I have no sun damage to my skin what so ever. After all the mock take I went through in the 80's and 90's about being pales and not looking 'healthy' as I didn't have a tan, I am so glad now. My skin is amazing soft, wrinkle free and no blemishes or damage sun spots. My brother and his friend runs the charity Melanoma UK and try's to get the message out there about how damaging the sun is. But it sometimes falls on deaf ears, especially young girls and women and now young men using sunbeds...or death beds as I call them . Keep the info coming Wayne ,,,xx

    Thank you for talking about this. My mom is a melanoma skin cancer survivor and ever since she got skin cancer, I stopped sunbathing. I'm a redhead and I've always felt the need to keep up with everyone getting tan in the summer especially when I'm told I don't look "healthy" because I'm so pale skinned. I'm instructed by my GP and dermatologist to use sunscreen whenever I'm outside, never sunbathe. Sunscreen is a necessity. Lying in the sun feels good, we get vitamin D, serotonin, etc but it's not worth the repercussions. I'm also using Retin-A and acne antibiotics right now so I'm 100% more photosensitive than I normally am. If you have acne try EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46. You won't breakout and it feels light on the skin!!! Please protect your skin this summer. So glad Wayne made this video. God bless you Wayne. I love you ;) xx Brittany

      Yes, sport that beautiful white skin. I'll be 50 in a few months.....grew up in the 80's when there wasn't as much knowledge about the damaging effects of the sun. And pressure....ah, the pressure to get a tan. I was out there getting my butt burnt to a crisp....getting sun poison EVERY time, winding up in the hospital with seizures. My dad was ready to kill me...if the sun didn't. By my early 20's....after completing RN school/college I started taking care of my skin. I think I still made the mistake of not reapplying when I was working outside, or on a day I was just in the sun a lot. Those early days have brought about some sun spots that have surfaced over the last couple of years. I'm fighting tooth and nail with Retin-A, Vitamin C, Alpha Hydroxy and derma rolling. I was born a redhead......my hair has darkened over the last 6 yrs. but my skin is still lily white. Over the years I even had older nurses to rib me to death about looking too pale and sickly.......I learned to be confident in my paleness, and to know that they were just ignorant.

      DanielSangster Yes, it can be healthy in moderation but most people don't go into the sun in moderation, unless they're working a graveyard shift, or are in a building all day, and have a short commute.
      The irrefutable facts of sun damage on the skin warrant using broad spectrum sun block. If you don't want to, then that's fine. It's your personal perspective. I, for one, don't plan on wasting away like those in my life that have contracted melanoma and died.

      All the sun you need is 20 minutes a day any more then that dose nothing as far as "health" benefit's 20 minutes a day gives you the maximum amount of Vitamin D you need for the whole day any longer in the sun won't give you more Vitamin D because your body can only use so much but then again one Vitamin D pill a day dose the exact same as 20 minutes of sunlight.

    • @sabinahertzum9728

      +Tammy St. Jean - then why are there different doses of vitamin D pills?? - I know what you mean and in that context you are right, but some people need more vitamin D - especially if they live in a country where it's darker most of the year, or they have health issues... I've always read/heard that 30 minutes of direct no sunscreen sun on hands and face daily gives a person what they need.. But If you live in a northern country and have an mostly indoor lifestyle that can be a hard goal to reach...

      @@nguyenminhphuong8438 You are right that UVA can penetrate glass and enter a building. However, unless you are quite close to the window or you are taking a hit from direct sunlight, the amount of UV light present is minimal and negligible. If you use a UV camera in the middle of a naturally lit room, it doesn't show very much, if anything at all. Sunscreen is therefore unnecessary if you are in doors and away from the windows most of the time.

      Tumors near your ears are very close to your thyroid and lymph glands. Once cancer cells spread to your lymphatic system, the cancer cells are at *high risk of being spread around your whole body.*

    And very important to know that never should be mix avobenzon with octinoxate, two diffrent filters that are not compatible.
    For example, if you use the sunscreen with avobezone than you souldn't use foundation that contains octinoxate, and vice versa. In that way, you will not bee protected from UVA/UVB, no effects.
    I have very oily skin and my favorite sunscreen is Eucerin gel-cream "dry touch", but Eucerin suggests to apply 2 ml on face and another 2 ml for the neck and decolte zone. And, even it seems to be very much, it isn't actually, it's veeery light and good formula for oily skin, my skin absorbs everything and stay matt! Eucerin uses the filters of high quality.
    Oh, and sorry for my bad english, i hope you'll understand :). Greetings from Serbia!
    And, you CAN mix mineral filters (for exemple, titanium dioxide or zinc oxid) with chemical (for exemple octinoxate), that's not a problem ;).

They offer gel-textured sunscreen with SPF 50 for easily affordable prices. I am currently using one from Nature Republic, but there's other brands such as Skinfood or Etude House. Thank you! I'm so glad you made this video. I grew up in the South in the US and my neighbour and best friend had an huge swimming pool. We used to bake and slather baby oil and iodine on daily in Sumner until we looked like Barbie dolls. Our hair would be white ( I'm blomde and very fair naturally) and we'd get deeply brown. I thank God that I stopped at 21 and haven't had a wrinkle. I'm blessed, for sure! However, in addition to spf in foundation, I always, always wear a sun block far above 30 .Most foundations are 15 or so. When we're very young, we often don't consider what we're doing with diet, self -care and the like as much as we ought to. My father began really bugging me about skin care. I'm so glad I listened. I had a couple of small moles removed as well as a child for prevention sake. Again Wayne, thank you for making this video. Do you use a physical or chemical sunscreen? I'm allergic to most chemical sunscreens (all the ones with crazy names) so I stay away from them. I use physical ones (zinc oxide and titanium dioxide) and they don't break me out. BUT physical ones can break you out if you don't properly wash it off you need an oil based cleanser (I use cleansing oils) and physical sunscreens leave a white cast on the skin.

    Facts:
    1) If a sunscreen makes you break out, there's two options: either your allergic to the sunscreen and the breakout is more like a rash or you are not cleansing properly.
    2) A BB cream protection will suffice on a day to day ie. morning commute, office all day, leaves office at about six.
    3) You need proper sunscreen if you take your bike out, go for a walk, etc.
    4) If you wear sunscreen YOU NEED TO CLEANSE PROPERLY. A simple cleanser will not suffice. When it comes to sunscreen you need to take out the artillery, a balm or a bi-fase cleanser will take the grime and then you cleanse again.
    5) Micellar water is not a cleanser for god's sake

    • @katr_i_na
      @katr_i_na 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I cleanse properly and thoroughly and still some sunscreens make me break out. Not because I'm allergic to them, either - I'm oily and my skin isn't sensitive at all - but because it is non-comedogenic and clogs my pores.

    • @marianamejiareza6182
      @marianamejiareza6182 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Katrina B hi friend. So if something is clogging your pores it's because your not removing it properly. And it's not your fault. Sunscreens are a hassle to remove, it's like putting glue all over your face: everything will stick to it. I'd use something with cetearyl alcohol ceteareth-33 :) (also a non comedogenic is a product specifically designed to not clog your pores, a comedo is a fancy nickname for a spot).

    • @katr_i_na
      @katr_i_na 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      When I talk about something clogging my pores I mean within the few hours I have it on. I can go out with a comedogenic product on my face and return home 8 hours later with budding pimples. It's not a case of not removing it properly - I always do that. It's the fact that some skin and pores do absorb product faster. (I know the difference between comedogenic and non-comedogenic, was my mistake sorry)

I started using sunscreen daily in my early 20s, I am now 36 and I don't have a single freckle or questionable mark on my face/neck/chest. That said, my new favorite sunscreen is the new one from Tatcha! It's their Silken Pore Perfecting Sunscreen SPF 35. What I love about it is that it works beautifully under makeup, doesn't leave a residue and I can put a heaping teaspoon on my face without it pilling like the Murad Sunscreen Primer does. I highly recommend the product, especially to people who have larger pores - it works like a dream!

      Never put anything on your face before your sunscreen. It should be applied to clean, dry skin as it needs to adhere and bind with the surface to be effective. You can then follow with any other products that you usually use.

I have much lighter skin. Being a health care professional It's also important for people to know that you must apply your sunscreen at least 20 mins (30 is Better) prior to going out in the sun etc.
    That way it is absorbed & not wiped off on your clothing etc. I know have to make my 1st dermatologist appointment to get checked all over. I have a couple suspicious markings.
    Please be safe. If you need to be tan~Use self tanner but STILL apply sunscreen.

      I agree girl its entirely too much and I remember when no one talked about primers. I am going to start using sunscreen and possibly my green smashbox primer and the moisturizer and eye cream that I like at night. there is no need to do all those steps when in my opinion the sunscreen is a moisturizer.

    • @radocats
      @radocats 8 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      Keep your moisturizer and eye cream for night. Sunscreen should always be your last skincare product (before makeup). Use sunscreen as your primer/moisturizer during the day. All Clinique sunscreens are moisturizing enough for normal to dry skin including eye area. If your skin is oily try La Roche Posay dry touch spf 50. Good luck!

    • @08Stella
      @08Stella 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Chaslee, I used to do that when I had oily skin. Good point and is useful for someone who has a very oily face. My beautician even told me not to use any facewash in the mornings, just plain water, to freshen up the face, followed by a toner & a daycream. Then came the the era with the SPF already being mixed into the creams... which was followed by the "importance of using a sunscreen" on it's own... and now an added step in between, primers! Since I use Retin-A, my skin is more dry and I don't mind the daycream but I still just wash my face with plain water in the mornings. xxx

    I use less, but I use a high quality sunscreen.
    I have used La Roche Posay Anthelios SPF 70 with Meroxyl for around five years.
    The Meroxyl makes the sunscreen last longer (most sunscreens photo-degrade) and it's the best UVA blocker on the market.

      @siramea 7 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      You don't understand how SPF works. If you don't apply the full amount recommend, then you won't get the full SPF stated on the label. Applying half the amount, you only get the square root of the SPF, so applying half the amount for SPF 70 will only give you SPF 8.4, so if you are only applying 1/4 of the amount, as you suggest you may as well not apply any.

    Bravo! While I hate adding the extra layer to my oily skin, I do so religiously. As a build to your comments, I never forget my ears and my neck (front and back). A friend's mother had skin cancer on her ears. It was a much needed wake up call.

      As a pale person with lots of red - lighting does a lot. Wayne's also made videos about procedures he had that burn away blood vessels in the face, so that might be a factor, but I've looked into those extensively and really, really wouldn't recommend them. Just use a decent base product and/or live with it.

  • @08Stella

    Same! I buy the *Louis Widmer All Day SPF30* (normal sized tube, just like your Clinique one) and use it for my face. Every single morning, since I use Retin-A. It's parfumfree. Otherwise, if one uses a smaller bottle/tube, that is for the face AND use the required amount, then one'll go through it in 2 weeks. For the body I use *Australian Gold SPF30*, because it gives such a lovely sheen to the skin without being sticky at all. Self-tanner: I use *Lancaster* to deepen the tan afterwards. It gives the most gorgeous, well-hydrated skin. xx

    Thanks for this video! Australians tend to be pretty observant when it comes to foundation, I've noticed, since we have very high rates of skin cancer here and the Cancer Council pushed a huge public awareness campaign some years back. But even in Australia, I think a lot of people don't use the required amount for genuine protection. Formulations have improved so much over the years. There's really no excuse not to use sunscreen.

    Should I still use that much sunscreen when I live in a place where there is not that much sun and if there is it's not as intensive as in for example LA, Spain etc? Does anyone know?

    • @siramea
      @siramea 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      yes, if you don't apply the full amount then you will not get the full SPF stated on the bottle, and even if it is cloudy or overcast the suns rays still get through- Ireland has the 14th highest rate of skin cancer in the world but you wouldn't think if it as being a very sunny place. If it's a winter day and you are only outside for about 30mins-1 hr and avoid midday you could probably get away without sunscreen.

    Wayne, Thank you for covering this topic. I have been wearing a sunscreen under my make up since I was 35. I have not really heard much about "how much" to apply etc. I use Oil of Olay for face with and SPF of 30. I have not read anything about any of this, only trying to figure out out on my own. I make my own skin care products, but not make up etc. Trying to find something that feels right on my face is a challenge, at age 51. Thank you for all of your informative videos! Ashley Winning I find that if I use a hydrating serum instead of moisturizer in the morning it really helps, because serums are very watery, so I get all the hydration + protection without feeling greasy. hope that helps!

    • @SociallyChallenged4
      @SociallyChallenged4 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh hmm okay any you recommend? oh and are you supposed to put toner serum stuff on before makeup too? i usually just use it at night

    • @gottobemine
      @gottobemine 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I use It's Skin hyaluronic acid serum, The Body Shop Vitamin E serum is nice, too.
      I think organic mousturizers that are not very emollient usually sink into the skin better as well.
      Do what you're comfortable doing :) I usually don't do the WHOLE routine in the morning, because during the day it's mainly hydration and protection and, also, I can't be bothered haha. so for me I typically just cleanse, put a serum or natural moisturizer and a sunscreen before my makeup. I don't use primers, though, so I don't know how silicones in primers mix with all that stuff

      @oanwxrxn 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you should try to avoid using a moisturiser on daytime and use it at night instead because creme de la mer one is very thick consistency in my opinion.Your skincare routine is quite the same as I am, but I use creme de la mer at night and use gel de la mer on daytime as I live in humid climate like Thailand.

    • @Tay-nw9lt
      @Tay-nw9lt 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with +oanwaran. It's important to use gel moisturizers in humid climates because they lock the moisture in your skin.

    • @anaavalos8003
      @anaavalos8003 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Try putting your products on in order of thinnest consistency working up to your thickest consistency, allowing time for each product to soak into your skin before the next product is applied.

    Sunscreen is a MUST daily, no matter your climate or skin tone. Don't forget ears, neck, decollete area and rub the rest on the backs of your hands! This is a great demonstration of how much we need to be using. I also liked that you said if you skip this step, all the rest of your skincare efforts are irrelevant. Brilliant! Thanks for sharing this!
