I have been the same! I learnt this stroke when I was in primary school and I always got told to sort of bring my legs up together, nore like knees towards my stomach, then kick them out wide like into a circle and back. And my arms were hands together, back of hands touching, then push the water out and do a sort of circle type thing with my arms too. No wonder I've always been terrible at breast stroke 😂😂
@@davidleigh7698 i've covered big distances doing the breaststroke how I know it. apparently it has changed over the years so when i was taught it, that's how it was done. I just had no idea it had changed :D
To me this is the most intuitive stroke of all. Breathing is effortless because the upward thrust of the pull phase naturally makes your head surface to take a breath.
I personally find this one of the easiest strokes to do, but it is very difficult to master due to the timing needed to be really efficient with this stroke.
My breaststroke was complimented today by another swimmer, which was a nice confidence boost after being out of swimming for over 5 years due to injury.
A tip to make the video easier to understand, dont change camera angles in between the stroke. Show the complete stroke from one angle then switch to another angle.
It used to be my weakest stroke now it's my best one. I think putting a lot of effort on this stroke, indirectly improved my freestyle, butterfly and underwater turns. I must say that also my lungs capacity improved so lot.
I always had trouble synchronising my breathing with normal swimming. Switched to breast stroke about 10 years ago after a shoulder injury. love it, can swim for hours and my lungs no longer feel like they are going to explode
Fun fact; when sprinting, breaststroke -the granny stroke- actually requires the most strenght out of all the strokes, even fly. No wonder Adam Peaty is so JACKED :d
Also the most demanding technique, I never really worked on it much growing up and it limited my ability in 200 & 400 medley ... As a masters swimmer I am actually faster at breastroke now. Sub 2:40 200m the last 2 years with a pb of 2:37 (25m pool) at age 41. Keeping the knees together got me from around 1:30 for 100m in the 400 medley to about 1:23 ... working on sub 1:20 to get me under 4:45.

Hi guys. Trying to get into swimming for cardio and weight loss because I have injuries to my knees and legs. I am a little confused on the timing of the kick to the stroke. Would you recommend I just master the freestyle first and eventual move on to the breaststroke?
The kick kills me. I don't go anywhere. I end up doing the dolphin kick the whole way just so I can get from one side to the other without drowning. Yeah, I'm a bad swimmer.
Yeah, I still have a similar problem. It takes a lot of confidence to do the "proper" technique. I have a big problem simply with breathing and endurance. My heart and lungs need much more exercise.
i can do freestyle and backstroke and i have exactly the same problem as you. the kick is so weird to do for me, my legs always start sinking instantly whenever i try to do it.
i first practiced the kick motion on my bed lol i laid flat with my lower body hanging off the bed to get used to the kick motion and by the time i got in the water it was almost natural
Timing varies slightly from swimmer to swimmer, some videos tell you that you should start the kick phase once you have fully extended the arms, some like this one show that the swimmer starts the frog kick as soon as he's done with the pull. I've been revising my breaststroke technique and trying to find the optimal timing by starting the kick earlier (like in this video) or later, still I haven't understood which is better for me. I saw videos that have slightly different timing. If you watch breaststroke champions from underwater in slow motion (there are some videos out there) they don't have the exact same timing. Maybe it's personal.
Thanks for breaking this swimming style into logical pieces, helps a lot in understanding the mechanics of this stroke, however since focusing on my leg work and starting to push harderI have started to encounter knee pain, so I had to move to the butterfly kick to ease the pain. Do you know what may cause that or how can I prevent that? It is annoying and it actually pushes me away from the breast stroke style. Any advice would be more than welcome! Thanks!
i never was able to start with this technique. my legs were always sinking to the bottom even though I was trying to do everything like it should. i can do backstroke and freestyle. i might need to try it again with this video as it shows the technique pretty well.
I have knock knees, which make running, and most things athletic, a real struggle, but the way my knees point inward makes breaststroke kick weirdly easy.
Usually I do drills with just the kick using a kick board. I also imagine myself as a frog. Sometimes it's helpful to even just get out of the water, lean on something, stand on one leg, and practice the movement. Don't forget to squeeze your legs together!

You can but this is more about creating a more rounded swim program. Breastroke builds body awareness in the water that most triathletes need to work on.
Try the 1 pull 3 kick drill. Do one pull then while you kick focus on keeping your hips high in the water. Also, the higher you head comes up, the harder it is to keep higher hips, so try and keep it low as best you can. But the 1 pull 3 kick drill really helped me. Also the more flexible of a lower back you have, the easier it will be.
This is funny to me because breaststroke swimming is much easier for me than freestyle.I have completed 2 half IMs and 2 ODs (best: 30:53) using breaststroke. For example, I never get out of breath and I was able to pass slow freestyle swimmers in these races.breaststroking. But I cannot recommend copying it as it ruins your legs for the biking and running. Eventually breastroking is limited in speed due to body position and limited frequency of the leg propulsion. For me, this winter's training is dedicated to freestyle training while I will use breaststroke only for warming up/cooling down and recovery.
@@puetzranch Unfortunately, breaststroke and wetsuits do not work out together. A trisuit is no obstacle, though. But I'm still trying to improve my freestyle......
(1) Is it a good exercise of the kick when you disable your hands by hold your palms joines together on your lumbar spine? (2) does the exhale technique matter? I prefer to exhale with my mouth loose and slightly open (like in those Mach acceleration movies) but not sure if that induces more drag. I find it more relaxing though.
I'm a self taught swimmer after pretty much just being left alone in the pool a lot as a child (maybe not the safest thing but I survived). So I have no idea how these techniques work. I think i will try this the next time I go to a pool.thank you

❤breast Stroke. Good lessons still I'm doing at age of 72+ years very comfortably.thanks a lot. I learnt swimming at age of 50 years and learnt many tricks from Dolphin.
This is my favorite too. And IMO, the next most taxing after butterfly (especially at competitive effort). Since it’s very inefficient and momentum driven to propel forward at speed. I easily get my HR to my peak (170 ish) when doing it at best effort.
I have been working on just the stroke so far while using a pull-buoy in between my thighs/knees. I feel like I have been slowly progressing with the form but I find that my lower back is sore after. Could it be where I am positioning the buoy? I'm using a snorkel as well so my form is all under water at this point. I may not be providing enough information for accurate feedback so any tips would be helpful. Thanks
I play around with my breast stroke timing quite a bit. In one version I insert a quick dolphin kick after I straighten out and just before I pull... at least I think that's what I'm doing. It seems to add a little speed to my laps. Maybe it wouldn't be allowed in a race?
I have a mandatory course in Phys Ed tommorow, thank you for making this, because I understand and agree with the importance of knowing how to swim, i don't like swimming and i don't do it often, hopefully this helps me.
Hi please can you help. I have just started back on my fitness rafter the pandemic. I only do breast stroke. I feel I have an ok form/ technique. It’s the breathing for me! I hate having my head under the water so I tend to keep my head up all the time, which cause pain in my neck. I feel like that part of my swimming is ruining my breathing technique. Can you give me any tips on how to breathe better? I would he so grateful. Thanks for this video. I will defo be bringing my legs further back at the pool today.
Hi GTN, just found your channel, love it :) thanks a lot for this and lots of other great stuff! A quick question on this video please? Thinking about working on breastsroke drills, how do rate Breaststroke fins? Specifically with a kickboard to help perfect my kick? Are they worth it? Thanks a lot! G
Hi, thanks for the video. When I try to swim this technique I find it difficult to stay under the water, in the side view I see that my head does not fully enter the water, but only up to the end of the forehead.. Why does this happen? Even when I try to dive to the bottom of the pool and perform some swimming movements, I very quickly rise up and rise to the surface of the water.
I wish you had shown more of whole body movement of the stroke where arms and feet move alternately. I swam this stroke for many years moving my arms and legs at the same time. Now I am trying to correct it but it is hard.
I've just started learning to breaststroke but I can't grasp the kick motion,it's been 2 months now and i still can't master it,any tricks of the trade to help me..
Hey! Nice work on the explanation. I really liked it. Just one question though - How should one coordinate hand and kick movement. They can be learnt independently, now is there any relation as to when should you move your arm in a particular direction depending on which stage of kick you are in? Please let me know
I was coming to confirm that as well. Had extensive lessons as a kid but only recently got back at it again after probably twenty years ha. Best I remember and what seems to be working is the pulling back phase or catching if they call it that, goes with the abduction (spreading) and extension of the legs as they push the water back. This all so that the water is pushed all at once and so that the soles back and toes down matches with the recovery and the arms and legs become relatively linear for a second.
After watching a few more vids, I realize that while you do end resetting in the “straight line”, the pull and breathe really does come before most of the kick. Then your head is back down, allowing maximal effectiveness of the kick. Maybe I need to practice again; though I could have enough muscle memory that I’m kind of doing this already and don’t feel it. But I can definitely always get better.
I'm returning to swimming after a six year absence due to shoulder injury at 40 and I'm feeling tension in my back when pushing out of the water. It feels like I'm hyperextended my low bacj. What are some troubleshooting things I can do to fix this? Could it be core weakness or lumbar stiffness? What can I do to resolve it? Thank you very much
If I’m feeling pain in the hips and lower back after an hour of swimming this stroke, what am I doing wrong? Or how can I strengthen my lower back/hips?
I’ve always considered swimming as my nemesis. i’ve never been a strong swimmer and for some odd reason when i’m in the pool my mind becomes obsessed with how fast or slow i am going. I love the breaststroke but can never seem to master the kick. Coordination of everything including breathing has always been a challenge. Realising now as i take to swimming again (not to be defeated) i can actually use aids to isolate and work on the movements. I think the dolphin kick with BS would really work for me! thanks 🙏
Warm up in the water if possible.... get water in the suit and make sure it's pulled up properly. If you can't get in, a light jog and some bands to get the muscles activated & use bottled water in your suit. The boundary layer of water in the suit will help keep warm
Which is more important stroke - with legs or with hands, or is it both equally? I was practicing and I found that if emphasize it on the legs, I'm faster. I wasnt diving with the head though and didn't see any instructions on how to swim breaststroke correctly.
I have attended 7 sessions of swimming classes and still struggling with my kicks. haven't learned the hand movement and breathing yet because I'm still scared to float freely without anything to hold onto. perhaps that's why. its frustrating though. I'm trying my best yet others who attended the same sessions as I do already mastered 3-4 swimming techniques already 😞
Dealing with swim panic isn't something they spend a lot of time on in classes. I totally get you, I was the same. But the thing that made it easier was just swimming little half laps in the shallow end of the pool by myself and just focusing on one thing at a time like floating, kicking, or breething and reminding myself that drowning was literally impossible and that I was safe.

Wetsuit suggestions for breaststroke?
Me too, but I have not had any luck in becoming fast or efficient with freestyle.
@@puetzranch Unfortunately, breaststroke and wetsuits do not work out together. A trisuit is no obstacle, though.
But I'm still trying to improve my freestyle......
Same for me, i find breastroke is easy for me, im going for my 1st trialthon this mac, hopefully i can fully utilise my breaststroke during swim
How does it ruin your legs for biking and running, especially if you mix it with freestyle?
My friends, my peers, and some of my family thinks I'm washed. I'm only 14 but I want to make it big, this video helped me, thank you!
Beautiful practical demonstration ❤🎉🎉🎉
Thank you very good demonstration
(1) Is it a good exercise of the kick when you disable your hands by hold your palms joines together on your lumbar spine? (2) does the exhale technique matter? I prefer to exhale with my mouth loose and slightly open (like in those Mach acceleration movies) but not sure if that induces more drag. I find it more relaxing though.
Please share drills to coordinate hand and leg movements
Awesome, thanks!! 🎉
my favorite stroke
I struggle with this stroke as i tend to bend my neck to much upwards, I will try your advice in this video keep and straight as I can.. 👍
Trying to learn this, good at freestyle and back stroke, but I always sucked at this. Thanks for the tips.
Thank you, very useful!
I'm a self taught swimmer after pretty much just being left alone in the pool a lot as a child (maybe not the safest thing but I survived). So I have no idea how these techniques work. I think i will try this the next time I go to a pool.thank you
Thanks for the video 🙏
In free style I am unable to take breath from side headed position I have to bring up front pl teach me how to take breath keeping head left and right side
Took me weeks to learn but my fav !!!!
Very good lesson
Great job
Well done
Hope to continue
I have done too many wrong kicks in my life, this is not going to change... but the arm stroke might work. Looking forward to trying it.
How far down do you submerge your head in the water?
I have been working on just the stroke so far while using a pull-buoy in between my thighs/knees. I feel like I have been slowly progressing with the form but I find that my lower back is sore after. Could it be where I am positioning the buoy? I'm using a snorkel as well so my form is all under water at this point. I may not be providing enough information for accurate feedback so any tips would be helpful. Thanks
did you figure out what the problem was?
I play around with my breast stroke timing quite a bit. In one version I insert a quick dolphin kick after I straighten out and just before I pull... at least I think that's what I'm doing. It seems to add a little speed to my laps. Maybe it wouldn't be allowed in a race?
What order do you pull and kick? Is it same time or one after the other
I have a mandatory course in Phys Ed tommorow, thank you for making this, because I understand and agree with the importance of knowing how to swim, i don't like swimming and i don't do it often, hopefully this helps me.
thankyou so much i strugel onthis stroke
Glad we could help!
Kick is too wide in video
What do you think ?
Hi GTN, just found your channel, love it :) thanks a lot for this and lots of other great stuff! A quick question on this video please? Thinking about working on breastsroke drills, how do rate Breaststroke fins? Specifically with a kickboard to help perfect my kick? Are they worth it? Thanks a lot! G
Thanks
Hi, thanks for the video. When I try to swim this technique I find it difficult to stay under the water, in the side view I see that my head does not fully enter the water, but only up to the end of the forehead.. Why does this happen? Even when I try to dive to the bottom of the pool and perform some swimming movements, I very quickly rise up and rise to the surface of the water.
I wish you had shown more of whole body movement of the stroke where arms and feet move alternately. I swam this stroke for many years moving my arms and legs at the same time. Now I am trying to correct it but it is hard.
Thanks for leaving us your feedback! Maybe we can come back to breaststroke tips? 🏊🏻
@@gtnThat would we great!
Thanks for the video how interesting
Thanks for watching!
I have tried swimming breaststroke but can't bring my upper body out of the water, it is just my head that comes out. Please help.
Why is breaststroke a great alternative if you prominently swim freestyle?
Great video!
I've just started learning to breaststroke but I can't grasp the kick motion,it's been 2 months now and i still can't master it,any tricks of the trade to help me..
How do we pull our arm
How does kick outlets.
Thank you very much
heloo sir
kindly advise the drills for Brest stroke
The breast stroke does kick and the arm moves together or kicks first. Which one is first?
The tan lines 😂
If I’m feeling pain in the hips and lower back after an hour of swimming this stroke, what am I doing wrong? Or how can I strengthen my lower back/hips?
Can you give more tip I dont keep my leg starit
this was good
Nice tips
amazing
How to time the hand strokes with the kicks? Any ideal ratio?
I’ve always considered swimming as my nemesis. i’ve never been a strong swimmer and for some odd reason when i’m in the pool my mind becomes obsessed with how fast or slow i am going. I love the breaststroke but can never seem to master the kick. Coordination of everything including breathing has always been a challenge. Realising now as i take to swimming again (not to be defeated) i can actually use aids to isolate and work on the movements. I think the dolphin kick with BS would really work for me! thanks 🙏
Any tips on how to warmup for a cold water swim? Doing Indian Wells 70.3 in 3 weeks and the water is supposed to be very cold.
Thx
I have pain in my right hip
Which stroke can help get over it
About to catch swimming again! Combining it with going to the gym! We got this, city bois!
How has the leg kick changed and is it more efficient and quicker thanks Peter
Hey, i was just wondering about can you make a more deep explanation video about the kicks
thanks guys!!
How many kcals do you burn in a slow breats stroke session as a beginner ?
In the catch, are your hands tilted so that thumbs are slightly down, palms facing and pushing out?
Do I need extra gym program to improve my speed? Or just regular swimming is enough?
During breast stroke, i am not able to do leg portion simultaneously with hands. When i will bend legs and when i will do the hand portion
