An Entire Game About Moving Portals (and Portal Paradoxes) that's kind of overtutorialized

  • Unfortunately due to the amount of intro puzzles, the 'paradoxes' part does not seem to appear for a while... I'm just as annoyed as you are about that, lol.
    Off-camera I have done like 45 puzzles total, which is half the game, and there is much stuff that is NOT about portal frames (movable blocks, jank physics, buttons and doors) - this video is really more like 'some cool puzzle platformer stuff but frames don't feel like they play that much of a primary role'. I guess comment if you would like more of this series.
    store.steampow...
    In some ways "moving portals" sounds odd, because you do 'move' portals in portal, but that is really more like teleporting to different positions rather than having speed.

    Hello and thanks for playing my game.
    Although it was already said in the video I want to stress that these are only introductory levels. There is way more complicated stuff going on and the difficulty increases a lot in later levels. I understand the criticism of "overtutorializiation", but Icely Puzzles is confused by some concepts at first, too, and I want Frame to be playable by people who never heard of Portal as well. It's a delicate balancing act to introduce mechanics at the right pace without an all size fits all solution. The game changes later on and the density of "tutorial-levels" decreases significantly.
    I also want to address the point that "Thinking with portals is easy." is a pretty bold claim. I'm gonna be honest: it is difficult to get any attention as a small, no-name dev and being cocky is a tempting way to try to do that. I hope I will be forgiven to overstating my case.

      I actually enjoyed the "Thinking with portals is easy." a lot because it provides expectation that it will be topped :p
      It's just that for me, for the purposes of content I would have liked to see more visually interesting frame-specific stuff.
      Not even difficult stuff, but stuff that shows that notable mechanics and structures with frames are possible and acknowledged. So it feels like "the anticipation... when will it come..." for a while lol. Anyway your game's good and I love and appreciate that you made it :)

      I feel like you could add a simple "have you played portal 1? What about 2? Mel?" and skipping certain levels based on those answers would be a good solution

      Cool game but 12:00 was wrong portals don't effect momentum Glados said it so it would make it just plop out not get speed

    • @softpaw6234
      @softpaw6234 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@dvan2399 I don't recall her saying that, and even if she did she's a very unreliable narrator. If you actually think about it, if the portal is moving relative to you that means the world on the other side of the portal is moving relative to you, which is mathematically equivalent to you moving relative to the world on the other side of the portal; speedy thing go in, speedy thing go out

    • @clocked0
      @clocked0 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@dvan2399What GLaDOS actually said is momentum is conserved. What that means is if a cube is moving towards a portal, that cube will be moving at the same speed out of the exit. Regardless of whether it is the cube moving, or the portal, since they would appear identical.

    You’re trying to over complicating a very simple puzzle, mostly because you’re looking for an answer and you’re brain is hot-wired for highly complex puzzles with sometimes an obscure answer you wouldn’t have even noticed before and it just makes this very painful to watch.

    the buttons moved the block in a different direction because the frame itself was rotated, rotating the axis-es on which the block translates. you can see this from the arrows on the block on the other side of the frame, as they still point in the direction they actually move

    This game seems really fun and watching you overthink unity block physics and freak out when the blocks that fall over fall over was very entertaining.

    The fact that the portals are double sided and stationary reminds me more of the portals from Antichamber than Portal.

    • @IcelyPuzzles
      @IcelyPuzzles  ปีที่แล้ว +13

      they quickly become not-stationary and not double sided and movable, but yeah I get how it feels like that in the intro levels

    This seems to have more in common with antechamber than portal tbh, especially with the weird physics/ perspective tricks they use in the game, which are very similar to the former, rather than the latter, but maybe the game developer hadn't played antechamber before creating this game, so didn't realise how similar they are.

    Imagine a door frame flys past you.
    You go through it but you don’t gain any momentum. Now imagine that, but the exit of the door is stationary.
    THE SAME THING APPLIES TO PORTALS.
