It was the 4/4/2006 in Paris at the Théâtre du Châtelet. Ypu can see me in the middle of the third row. It was a great evening and a triumph for Sumi-Jo with a great parisian public!
and there she goes taking mezzo soprano roles! well at her beginning she thought she was a mezzo soprano so she surely has some mezzo skills. And what skills! her coloratura is excellent as always! flawless rendition! love sumi :)
Mezzosoprano = half soprano in Italian, and both voices share a good deal of their range (C4 to A5 is basically shared by both tessitura), with some mezzo being able to hit G3-A3 (typical contralto notes) and sopranoes being able to hit notes above A5, up to C6, sometimes reaching as far as F#6 for the lightest sopranoes.
VERY GOOD !! This is something different from Bartoli's performances. DON'T argue who is better. It's as green as children. " which is more stronger between tigers and lions?"
@Dorian G. doesn’t mean she makes a better sound. Contrary to popular opinion, Bartoli doesn’t really make such a stable, clean, nice and transparent sound. She has a lot of issues like Knodel sound and wobbly voice. If you watch a channel called: Floria Tosca you will know what I mean. Sumi Jo on the other hand, is rarely amazing in today’ opera scene! She’s one of the sopranos who are the closest to Old School singing.
I love how such an excellent coloratura sang this in a mezzo style and so different from Bartoli or Cangemi. All amazing for sure, but Sumi did flawlessly here in such a brilliant manner!
just bear in mind that while she's having this recital, it's her father's funeral on the other side of the world. This recital is her tribute to her dead father.
I like Sumi Jo's rendition more than Bartoli's. I don't like Bartoli's voice, too mechanic. Not saying she's not good, but I prefer Sumo Jo 💕💗🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹bravoooooo
Yes, this aria is written for a medium coloratura mezzo (originally for a male castrato), while Sumi Jo is a high lyric coloratura soprano. Her chest is developed enough for her to hit the main low notes (1:43), though you can hear her struggle in some of the more complicated low sections (2:57) and flat out re-write them (2:20, and she skipped the entire low B-section) in others. She is absolutely wonderful in this rendition in my opinion, given she’s the wrong voice type :)
Vivaldi was a composer who was utterly insensitive to the natural limits of human vocal capacity. (He wasn't the only one -- Beethoven and Mozart, among others, had a similar problem.) Agitata seems to have been written for a string virtuoso then transcribed for voice. All singers who try Agitata have difficulty with it, Including the remarkable Bartoli. Ms. Jo accepts the challenge courageously and does a fantastic job with an impossible piece. Brava! Well done!
Antonio Vivaldi is my favourite composer, and Jo Sumi my favourite soprano, so you can imagine how much emotive is this performance for me. Heavenly voice, Jo Sumi.
Hey!!! Very good! Sumi Jo does a very good job! I love this aria, and altough it's not for Cecilia's voice, I think Cecilia Bartoli puts a great energy to this aria.
It is indeed hard to find her doing operas on TH-cam, though there are some great recording of her live operas if you dig a bit deeper~~ Like La Sonnambula, good luck on treasure hunting :)
@MrCurryFan It's all a matter of personal choice! If you prefer Bartoli enjoy her, please don't come here making silly statements. I never never insult other singers, I simply don't listen to them. In my world Sumi Jo is and always has been number one.
@primohomme castrati are just brilliant haaa i cant remember who but one could do a thousand note passage in a minuet with one breath haa they were simply amazing but its a good thing they dont exist anymore :)
I PARTLY agree with you on Koreans: vanity, yes, lack of individuality bordering totalitarianism, yes, but stupid? NEVER! They are some of the smartest people. And Sumi Jo is one magnificent songbird, and that's all that matters here. This performance does not display Sumi Jo at her best (well, she's way past her prime anyway), but still it's more than respectable. She desperately needs Baroque specialists. She has the right instrument, but she has no style. She might get a great result.
I like this piece accompanied by an orchestra better than the piano. Prety though i do prefer Cecilia Bartoli when it comes to Baroque music. Sumi did a nice job though.
Thankfully we don't do such barbaric things anymore and I don't wish to return to the days of the castrati. We will never know what a good castrato sounded like (Moreschi wasn't a good one...he was only a choral singer).
She does look really uncomfortable. It sounds to me this piece is new to her (also to the pianist!). I wonder what made her decide to tackle this, especially after Cecilia Bartoli's perfect interpretation (fabulously accompanied by authenitc Baroque bands twice over) is branded in everyone's ears. Perhaps she's resentful that she never got to do all the great Baroque parts during her prime, which would've been superb. The informed Baroque performance movement missed her and vice versa.
@rmcinuk ... and how can you understand if you like a singer or not, if you don't begin to listen to them? :) moreover, i didn't insult her. i was replying to a person who said something not very flattering to bartoli. and then, why did you reply only to my comment when there are many many other comments about how much bartoli is better than sumi jo?
I don't get it, why's everyone bitching 'bout this? It's not THAT bad. And for your information, Bartoli doesn't own this aria. She owns Armatae Face, but not this. This one is better done by both Emma Kirkby and Veronica Cangemi. :)
@fonteyn9 WOW I completely agree with you. Agreed...the pianist is not great at all. However, Sumi Jo is incredible in this piece, although Bartoli is more polished. The comment about Asians is completely unwarranted though! As a Chinese-Canadian I take much offence to the comment you made - it sounds like Asians are not competent. "Not bad - for an Asian?" I don't think so. She's amazing!
I have to agree. She just stands there and with much effort gets most of the notes out. It's more like a workshop recital. I always say, if you can't even pronounce what you're singing you shouldn't perform it at all.
Of course she perhaps to work on the style, she never said she is the queen of baroque period, anyway she sing nicely this piece and Whatever we can say on the style she we still stay THE sumi Jo. I like it... not everyone has to sing as Bartoli, each one has her personal style, and that is all what music is about.
Sorry, she has an ampty style.
I agree, both (Bartoli and Sumi Jo) are great and I love both renditions 😍❤
@@cguzmmangthis is mezzo soprano song. You have to know that
Stupenda!
Now that’s what an actual good sound opera should sound like!!! Well supported, transparent, no wobbly voice or unstable tone,
Fine pianist. I like this interpretation. Fresh. Musical. Trchnically fabulous. A really superbe recording. Well done.
It's just amaze how many colors she brings to this music. Amazing performance. Great rendition!
