One can't be exhuberant when one's dear father is laying down in a casket however full of fun and joy a number may be. I don't know if you realized that during this performance, it's her father's burial on the other side of the world.
I don't think she performs "Da Tempeste" with as much power or passion as Joan Sutherland or Beverley Sills, her voice remains quite small...but she more than makes up with it with her wonderful stacatti! Excellently executed as always.
All of you are incredibly picky. This is a lovely voice, a superb technique, and a sweet sound. The pyrotechnics and need to focus probably precludes singing this aria while doing a lot of physical movement. Give her a break!
In her memoir, she has openly discussed that baroque was a great fear for her, because she has absolute pitch and the baroque pitching was very difficult to handle for her.
Well, I must have overlooked that there aren't any "my father's funeral' in the video description box--I just happen to have a copy of this recital. You're right, personal stories should not influence any critisms or opinions. And, yes it's UTTERLY POINTLESS to inform our intelligent public of her predicament. My practice of well-rounded critism must have been incorrect for the last 56 years.
Not at all a DIVA, she performs not herself, but she almost presents the composer, the music and at last her ability to sing perfect. She is a present from heaven.
It's a shame that she hasn't sung any Baroque during her prime. She would've been such a perfect Morgana. So impeccably sung that almost scary. That being said, her da capo is a little too full of semi-quavers. At 2:09, either she had a memory failure or it was a damn odd interpolation. And boy, she's awfully stiff while performing such an exuberant number full of fun and joy.
Ugh, how was I, as with anyone else listening to this, supposed to know that? So she did have a good reason to be stiff, but she still managed to sing it impeccably, as I wrote. Criticism, as it were, is blind to private/behind-the-scene stories. The fact that you told me of her father's passing wouldn't change any opinion or generate any remorse. It was really rather pointless of you.

Do you realize that baroque music is the hardest to sing? And Sumi Jo is an amazing talent! - Perfect performance. Thanks for posting this video.
extraordinaire Sumi, un vrai bijoux de virtuosité !!!
Por Dios!!!! que tal duo!!!!

The best of the best, what a Singer !! A real Diva !!
@oliviasmulyan She is simply amazing as are all the greats. How lucky we are to have and to have had them in our lives. What a gift to us all
really like it.
@oliviasmulyan I can't think of a better angel, she is filled with love when she sings, an engine she is not! She is wonderful.
Eine Begnadete schenkt uns mit Ihrem Können den Genuss schönster Kompositionen.
Brava
Wahres Können!!!

Totally committed singing, but still no trill. Sutherland had, always had the trills. We are so lucky to have all these ladies in our lives.
good soprano

@oliviasmulyan She sure does. Again, miss a good trill in baroque singing, not everyone has them, but again I love them all.
Sumi Jo - Da Tempeste (Handel)

Is the video out of sync with the sound?
you're right with 2:09
Not at all a DIVA, she performs not herself, but she almost presents the composer, the music and at last her ability to sing perfect. She is a present from heaven.
Maybe not the best repertoire choice for her...
FORGOT IT'S. I HEAR NOT MUCH TECNIQUE. HERE NATURAL TALENT YES

Curiously hollow and lacking in feeling, like a mechanical wind-up doll. A proficient doll, but a doll nethertheless.
she sounds just like a singing machine, plenty of skill but no expression.
Jo, this is not for you. Please don't try this in the future. Listen to Julia Leznehva
Ein sehr überhebliches Urteil!
