But she called me every day to make sure I was taking it easy, and that my husband was helping. She even paid for a cleaning company to clean my house weekly so I could stay on bed rest.

Yeah I don't think a judge would have sympathy if MIL was honest. He'd have thrown the book at her.
    Judge: How do you plead?
    MIL: Not Guilty
Judge: You were caught on camera pushing Mrs. Jones down the stairs. What's your defense?
    MIL: It was an accident.
Judge: An accident? Were you attempting to harm Mrs. Jones or her baby? What's your connection to her?
MIL: You don't understand your honor. I don't know this woman. From behind and based on the clothes she was wearing I thought it was my daughter-in-law.
Judge: Wait so you're saying Mrs. Jones just happens to resemble your daughter-in-law. Were you attempting to kill your daughter-in-law?
MIL: What? No of course not. I was only hoping she'd have a miscarriage. Then when she recovers from it she and my son could try again and this time give me a grandson. I don't want or need a granddaughter

Don’t forget the long chewing out from the judge
Judge: this has got to be one of the worst assaults I’ve ever dealt with. You ultimately snuck up on a pregnant woman and you pushed her down onto the street. You did so with the intent to harm too! You were relentless, you snuck up on her, you pushed her, you watched her fall, you laughed and you fled, leaving her for dead! I agree with the family, I hope you suffer in prison as well! You know, if this were a murder case, you’d be getting life without parole!
