I’ve been at West Ham in the 70’s & 80’s when the ‘official’ attendance was 26,000 but you couldn’t swing a cat and the following week 35,000 where you could. We often got 2 through the turnstile bunging the attendant 50p or a £1 every ground done it. All seater all ticket whilst taking away some of the atmosphere has made it so much safer inside the grounds it had to happen albeit rather late ⚒️
was at Hillsborough for 1987 semi between Coventry and Leeds. Leeds had leppings lane end. it was a nightmare. my brother could not breathe at the end of the game. in 89 it was an accident waiting to happen. the warning signs of 1981 and 1987 were sadly ignored.

A couple of my pals went home with only one trainer on and one lad lost both his shoes 👟 people were standing on each other’s feet it was that tight as the crowd surged backwards and forwards. One or two lads described the same thing that their feet weren’t on the floor at some points it was that tight in there. I was at the front just to the left of the goal. You can see me on the TV when Merv Day misses a back pass. Camera zooms in and you can see my hands pushed into the fence & when I could pull a hand away all my palm was like cubed from the shape of the fence. In front of me I’d wedged a young lad of about 6 years old. I tried to create a gap for him between me & the fence, so every time the crowd surged forward I stiffened my arms to give him that space. He was with his grandad who was really really scared. We had a few words at the start when he said I was crushing his grandson and could I push people back. The kid was crying so that’s when I said I’d try my best to give him a bit of room. I was getting tired towards the end it was like a massive 💪 workout. It was scary I’ll admit. One point I honestly thought I don’t think think I can keep this up. It was always always waiting to happen. I was 19 at the time. The coppers were proper twats. One who would have been in his late 30,s said to me before the game “get down there or I’ll scuff you” I’d never heard of scuff so I asked him what it meant. He had some of those leather combat gloves on the soldiers used to wear in N.I. with the raised knuckles. He hit me like a bitch slap right on my left Temple with his clenched fist. It was quite hard tbh. A older Leeds fan who saw it all came over and gave him a dig, saying he was a straight bullying twat...
I went in 77 united V Leeds. You can imagine the love between us and Leeds, I followed united from early 70’s to today. Home and away. It was top 5 most harrowing games for aggro. United had Leppings Lane we were crushed to fuck. My old man said at the time it’s a miracle no one died. Dozens were carried off. I was not surprised who happened to the scousers. All football fans are pretty much the same. Liverpool and united have the numbers resulting in more trying to get in ticketless.
Every West Ham fan I've ever met has mentioned this day, 36 years later and they still bang on about it. I'm a Man United fan and 1975 was before my time so I can't comment, I was active in the 80's and have to admit that West Ham always brought small but tasty firms up to Manchester, they always tended to head straight to Old Trafford instead of staying in Manchester City Centre where United's top boys would be drinking. Spurs and Chelsea always had good turnouts at our ground as well.

People are commenting on this video that clearly were either not there ,or cant really remember what happened, it was over 35 years ago. For one, the video does not show any "Firm" chasing another. It just shows overcrowding and people including Women getting on the pitch for safety. Lot of "legend" talked about here. I remember back in the day most clubs simply couldn't cope with the sheer numbers that would turn up to support Man United. Didn't matter where they played or who they played. Many a time I stood with the home support while United had more of the ground than the home side and we were in with the home support on a regular basis. Cov, Palace, Everton, Blues, Celtic-friendly, Arsenal, QPR and West Ham spring to mind. I remember in one particular game against Palace there were more United in the Palace end than Palace!

At a Scotland England game in the 80s a good few west ham fans were in Edinburgh at the night time along with 2 coaches of Newcastle men and I mean men 30 to 50 year olds on a stag do and about 25 of us 18 to 23 year olds. This can't be 1975 the year West Ham won the FA Cup. The manager in this clip is Ron Greenwood, he left in 1974. John Lyall was the manager when we won against a Bobby Moore led Fulham at Wembley 2 nil.

There was always a competitive edge playing Everton but there's always been a respect which doesn't exist towards or from the red side of Liverpool.

I was at this game so unlike probaly a lot of tobys on here can give a true account of what i know about that day.We mobbed up in Victoria as usual and had quite a few run ins all the way to the ground.NEVER got run but an interesting journey,and that was how it was all day.

Thease lads had been going for some years because they were well in with top boys in the cockney reds. 1 of the best battles is 86 f.a cup at old Trafford. I.C.F came with 3-400 of their boys led by their top boy Bill Gardner who was in a orange boiller suit. I can remember Dobson doing a meet and greet before it kicked off. I have to say the i.c.f held their own led by their general,they also took over the seats in the k stand what great days.

They were always in RJ's wine bar or the Brittania in Plaistow (if Cass fancied playing cards, I could never work out why so many followed that bully). I got run at Old Trafford in '85 during that famous day but can say that I doubt if Manchester United have ever had a better ruck from a London firm at their place. This was nothing to do with violence as such, just overcrowding because the recognised gate was about 5,000 less than it actually was; a common problem with the old style turnstiles and the blokes' on the gate organising their own little payday. I was at this match, ( 9 years old) , looking down from the upper west stand seats. The whole of the South Bank was given over to the Man Utd fans. West Ham thugs had forced open the main exit door at the south-east corner of the ground, and shoved their way in, causing the crush. The attendance at Upton Park during big games was always thousands over the official figure. Plenty of fiddling at the turnstiles.
I was at the game in that corner where there was a crush, thousands of Manchester supporters had turned up has they did at every away game, west ham just packed them all in also there was a story reported in the papers next day that hundreds of locked out Manchester supporters had kicked down a turnstile gate at that end and surged in, I did not see any fighting just a swaying crush of supporters some got on the pitch to escape the crush. There was probably well over 40000 in there that day. Spurs was about the only London club where there would be trouble for the visit of United. When west ham came to OT that season where was their support only a couple of hundred came
Demon 1 I was 17 and my first visit to Upton Park. I was with my pals from Salford and we didn’t move an inch but West Ham fans kept us busy and I loved every fkn minute. Shame the intensity and atmosphere isn’t still the same. Never did see much of a whu firm at OT but you always gave us a good time at yours.

I've just watched the highlights of QPR v Man U played one month before this. At that game Man U fans have the whole away end and are in the side terracing as well. At West Ham the 'Red Army' are squeezed in to a corner of the South Bank. I guess lots didn't even go because of West Hams reputation.

r que Been to the old Main Road ground dozens of times starting when I was still at school and seen some great battles in the kippax but the length and shape of the place would stop any firm from completely taking it and it used to just flare up all through the match. I can tell in truth that I have never heard of any mob even trying to take the stret but my cousin who was an origin skin told me of a match when Everton fans got in there early doors and had a good scrap before being forced out at half time but this was before my days. I remember Bobby Charltons testimonial match against Glasgow Rangers and a mob of them tried to get in but they got absolutely battered in the stret but gave us a good fight everywhere else that day. I also read in some book by a Chelsea fan who’s name I can’t recall that him and his pals took a piece of the stret and I thought wait a minute I was in the Stretford end that day (which was rare for me then) and looked through my old progs so I know full fact I was there and they definitely wasn’t. All pure fiction. Iv read a few accounts like that and just laugh. In its heyday the Stretford end was a mad house and no fucker but a red would go there. A lot of fun was had back then but with cctv everywhere now it will never be the same again. Now there are different battles to fight with the twats that would turn our country into a shithole. An incredibly atmospheric clip. I watched it from the Chicken Run as a young lad. The truth? Man U swamped the South Bank, a fair few West Ham stood their ground in there, loads of West ham skins piled in to help from the Chicken Run, as more West Ham entered from the rear of the South Bank in the Chicken Run corner, hence the crush. In the ground there were no winners and losers, the crowd was far too tightly packed. Word got round though. A few weeks later Liverpool visited- minus their fans.

I was in Bernidorm on a stag weekend about 15 years ago, i was with Bradford City lads, we went in the Yorkshire to watch the charity shield, United v City, the whole pub was taking over by United fans, we sat with a family of 5, the only City fans in there, There was 30 lads in there from Birmingham, same as us, on a stag, when i asked them if they was Blues or Villa, they turned round as said " We are all United fans" we were gobbed smacked, United can pull in a firm from every town and city in the country, so the numbers game is not a myth, how can other clubs complete with that, except, maybe Liverpool.

@r que There are different reasons why people end up doing what they do. Some as you suggest do it for "Their Manor". But the majority of people when you're young and daft you just do what your pals do. You follow the mob. It doesn't matter what they are doing, your peer group overrules anything else. When you get a bit older and you start to question things most realise that it's completely stupid to fight some bloke just because he lives in the next town. Where you're born is random. It could be affected by your dad's job, you're parents splitting up, economics or just about anything. ie. It could have been you living in Slough instead of Reading so why hate or fight the bloke? It's ludicrous to hate someone because they live in a different town, city, county or country. Wherever you are there are good folk and complete bellends. Then for the minority it's all about the fighting. Don't matter who. As long as there's a meet up and a good ruck they couldn't give two fucks who they are fighting. They don't necessarily hate the other blokes indeed they may like and respect them as they are all like minded. This is seen in many who were in proper firms!

FV was never logical I eventually see the football bubble bursting big time for some of the reasons you've mentioned. Take Manchester United as an example. Early 70's apparently the average age on the Stretford End was between 19 and 21. Now it's mid 40's. If youngsters are engaged elsewhere, ie-computer games, social media, gym, taking drugs or stuffing their obese faces down @ Nandos then the next generation won't have the love of the game that my generation has. They won't bother paying for Sky Sports and the revenue stream will falter. When that happens the revenue will reduce to clubs but they will still have massive overheads and clubs will go bust. The rest who are left will all of a sudden be desperate to get youngsters back involved but that will take time.

And this is exactly why when the bubble bursts and all of a sudden the clubs need their loyal, local( in relative terms) fanbase they will suddenly find it no longer exists. The main reason that English football is so popular atm with TV companies is the atmosphere generated by the supporters. This motivates the players to play a very high tempo, attacking style of game which the Far East, American, Asian market choose to watch over and above the Spanish , German or Italian equivalent. If this goes and all of a sudden German,Spanish or Italian football becomes the "In Thing" as it was in the 1980's, coupled with the fact that it will be cheaper for the TV companies, the end will be nigh!! Back in the 70's I adored "MY" club. Now as you say it's become a franchise owned by Americans who couldn't give a stuff about "MY" club. So in return I'm losing interest until "MY" club is restored back to me and millions like me.

I’ve been at West Ham in the 70’s & 80’s when the ‘official’ attendance was 26,000 but you couldn’t swing a cat and the following week 35,000 where you could. We often got 2 through the turnstile bunging the attendant 50p or a £1 every ground done it. All seater all ticket whilst taking away some of the atmosphere has made it so much safer inside the grounds it had to happen albeit rather late ⚒️
was at Hillsborough for 1987 semi between Coventry and Leeds. Leeds had leppings lane end. it was a nightmare. my brother could not breathe at the end of the game. in 89 it was an accident waiting to happen. the warning signs of 1981 and 1987 were sadly ignored.

A couple of my pals went home with only one trainer on and one lad lost both his shoes 👟 people were standing on each other’s feet it was that tight as the crowd surged backwards and forwards. One or two lads described the same thing that their feet weren’t on the floor at some points it was that tight in there. I was at the front just to the left of the goal. You can see me on the TV when Merv Day misses a back pass. Camera zooms in and you can see my hands pushed into the fence & when I could pull a hand away all my palm was like cubed from the shape of the fence. In front of me I’d wedged a young lad of about 6 years old. I tried to create a gap for him between me & the fence, so every time the crowd surged forward I stiffened my arms to give him that space. He was with his grandad who was really really scared. We had a few words at the start when he said I was crushing his grandson and could I push people back. The kid was crying so that’s when I said I’d try my best to give him a bit of room. I was getting tired towards the end it was like a massive 💪 workout. It was scary I’ll admit. One point I honestly thought I don’t think think I can keep this up.

Every West Ham fan I've ever met has mentioned this day, 36 years later and they still bang on about it. I'm a Man United fan and 1975 was before my time so I can't comment, I was active in the 80's and have to admit that West Ham always brought small but tasty firms up to Manchester, they always tended to head straight to Old Trafford instead of staying in Manchester City Centre where United's top boys would be drinking. Spurs and Chelsea always had good turnouts at our ground as well.

I remember back in the day most clubs simply couldn't cope with the sheer numbers that would turn up to support Man United. Didn't matter where they played or who they played. Many a time I stood with the home support while United had more of the ground than the home side and we were in with the home support on a regular basis. Cov, Palace, Everton, Blues, Celtic-friendly, Arsenal, QPR and West Ham spring to mind. I remember in one particular game against Palace there were more United in the Palace end than Palace!

At a Scotland England game in the 80s a good few west ham fans were in Edinburgh at the night time along with 2 coaches of Newcastle men and I mean men 30 to 50 year olds on a stag do and about 25 of us 18 to 23 year olds. There was always a competitive edge playing Everton but there's always been a respect which doesn't exist towards or from the red side of Liverpool.

Nice post, its true always had great battles with them i.c.f. started going football in 1980 with a few lads from Kilburn. Thease lads had been going for some years because they were well in with top boys in the cockney reds. 1 of the best battles is 86 f.a cup at old Trafford. I.C.F came with 3-400 of their boys led by their top boy Bill Gardner who was in a orange boiller suit. I can remember Dobson doing a meet and greet before it kicked off. I have to say the i.c.f held their own led by their general,they also took over the seats in the k stand what great days.

Fair enough mate but the firm were never in the Boleyn. They were always in RJ's wine bar or the Brittania in Plaistow (if Cass fancied playing cards, I could never work out why so many followed that bully). I got run at Old Trafford in '85 during that famous day but can say that I doubt if Manchester United have ever had a better ruck from a London firm at their place.

r que..to answer your questions..when i was growing up in finchley my dad took me to see spurs one week and arsenal the next..one week my dad coudn't go so our neighbour took me and his son to see chelsea v united it was 1967..united's football blew me away never seen anything like it i was hooked after seeing best law and charlton..after joining the london fan club i started to make loads of mates it was like a party ftom 9 in the morning..i soon got hooked on hooliganism and when we got relegated it gave me a chance to go to places i would never have seen..hull. cardiff..carlisle..sunderland..bristol etc..as the years went by the mib were a breakoff from the red army..i had loads of manc mates i think the difference is yes the mancs hated cockneys but if yo were a cockney red they welcomed you...trust me city were always in the shadows in those days you never saw them unless you went into the kippax..and that clip i believe was a sunday afternoon testimonial game..i respect you for following your post code team i probably would have done the same had i not gonr to chelsea that day..and last of all im glad you knew of the finchley reds..i can only go by what i saw and was involved in ..great days but time has moved on and spending years in manchester has only left me hating city liverpool and leeds to a certain extent but i really wish spurs could have won the league this year!!..all the best (mick the con)..my united name 👹

I was at this match, ( 9 years old) , looking down from the upper west stand seats. The whole of the South Bank was given over to the Man Utd fans. West Ham thugs had forced open the main exit door at the south-east corner of the ground, and shoved their way in, causing the crush. The attendance at Upton Park during big games was always thousands over the official figure. Plenty of fiddling at the turnstiles.

I was at the game in that corner where there was a crush, thousands of Manchester supporters had turned up has they did at every away game, west ham just packed them all in also there was a story reported in the papers next day that hundreds of locked out Manchester supporters had kicked down a turnstile gate at that end and surged in, I did not see any fighting just a swaying crush of supporters some got on the pitch to escape the crush. There was probably well over 40000 in there that day. Spurs was about the only London club where there would be trouble for the visit of United. When west ham came to OT that season where was their support only a couple of hundred came
Demon 1 I was 17 and my first visit to Upton Park. I was with my pals from Salford and we didn’t move an inch but West Ham fans kept us busy and I loved every fkn minute. Shame the intensity and atmosphere isn’t still the same. Never did see much of a whu firm at OT but you always gave us a good time at yours.

Has for Chelsea I went to all Uniteds games there in the 70s and 80s and never saw any major incidents there, always felt safe, there was only one incident I heard about where a Chelsea mob were run and battered at a tube station by United. I've just watched the highlights of QPR v Man U played one month before this. At that game Man U fans have the whole away end and are in the side terracing as well. At West Ham the 'Red Army' are squeezed in to a corner of the South Bank. I guess lots didn't even go because of West Hams reputation.

r que Been to the old Main Road ground dozens of times starting when I was still at school and seen some great battles in the kippax but the length and shape of the place would stop any firm from completely taking it and it used to just flare up all through the match.
I can tell in truth that I have never heard of any mob even trying to take the stret but my cousin who was an origin skin told me of a match when Everton fans got in there early doors and had a good scrap before being forced out at half time but this was before my days. I remember Bobby Charltons testimonial match against Glasgow Rangers and a mob of them tried to get in but they got absolutely battered in the stret but gave us a good fight everywhere else that day. I also read in some book by a Chelsea fan who’s name I can’t recall that him and his pals took a piece of the stret and I thought wait a minute I was in the Stretford end that day (which was rare for me then) and looked through my old progs so I know full fact I was there and they definitely wasn’t. All pure fiction. Iv read a few accounts like that and just laugh. In its heyday the Stretford end was a mad house and no fucker but a red would go there.

An incredibly atmospheric clip. I watched it from the Chicken Run as a young lad. The truth? Man U swamped the South Bank, a fair few West Ham stood their ground in there, loads of West ham skins piled in to help from the Chicken Run, as more West Ham entered from the rear of the South Bank in the Chicken Run corner, hence the crush. In the ground there were no winners and losers, the crowd was far too tightly packed. Word got round though. A few weeks later Liverpool visited- minus their fans.

I was in Bernidorm on a stag weekend about 15 years ago, i was with Bradford City lads, we went in the Yorkshire to watch the charity shield, United v City, the whole pub was taking over by United fans, we sat with a family of 5, the only City fans in there, There was 30 lads in there from Birmingham, same as us, on a stag, when i asked them if they was Blues or Villa, they turned round as said " We are all United fans" we were gobbed smacked, United can pull in a firm from every town and city in the country, so the numbers game is not a myth, how can other clubs complete with that, except, maybe Liverpool.

I eventually see the football bubble bursting big time for some of the reasons you've mentioned. Take Manchester United as an example. Early 70's apparently the average age on the Stretford End was between 19 and 21. Now it's mid 40's. If youngsters are engaged elsewhere, ie-computer games, social media, gym, taking drugs or stuffing their obese faces down @ Nandos then the next generation won't have the love of the game that my generation has. They won't bother paying for Sky Sports and the revenue stream will falter.
When that happens the revenue will reduce to clubs but they will still have massive overheads and clubs will go bust. The rest who are left will all of a sudden be desperate to get youngsters back involved but that will take time.

The main reason that English football is so popular atm with TV companies is the atmosphere generated by the supporters. This motivates the players to play a very high tempo, attacking style of game which the Far East, American, Asian market choose to watch over and above the Spanish , German or Italian equivalent. If this goes and all of a sudden German,Spanish or Italian football becomes the "In Thing" as it was in the 1980's, coupled with the fact that it will be cheaper for the TV companies, the end will be nigh!!
Back in the 70's I adored "MY" club. Now as you say it's become a franchise owned by Americans who couldn't give a stuff about "MY" club. So in return I'm losing interest until "MY" club is restored back to me and millions like me.
