Congratulations sir! It takes great courage to admit you have a problem and then take steps to overcome it. This should be a lesson to all the man bun shooters out there.
Thanks Julius! I'm loving the BRA, but honestly if I had to do it again, I'd probably just go straight BR for 1) Available off the shelf ammo; and 2) Available materials. Thanks for watching my friend!
Excellent breakdown. Everyone wants a shiny new toy and think “a new barrel isn’t so bad” without thinking about all the other parts of making the switch.
Thanks Alex! Yeah, I was looking at other options, but when I really added everything up, it wasn't worth the switch. Thanks for watching my friend!
I bought a 6PPC rifle for short range benchrest. Annealeze has some wheels that work with short cartridges for $25. I’d try the commonly used Varget powder for the SD and SD issues. You can probably sell your H4350 excess powder.
Great video. I don’t reload but have been intrigued by the 6bra. Would love to see a step by step for newbies for reloading a 6bra, although the parts list alone helps a ton!
Hey Tactical! Your wish is my command my friend! I'm going to work on a remake of my original loading video series I did (Part I is here: th-cam.com/video/96jgEydNkMU/w-d-xo.html). You can start with that 4 part series, things haven't changed too much but I have learned some things since then. I'll have that new one out soon. Thanks for watching my friend!
Great video. Very real world info, switching calibers is a lot more expensive then most people first consider. I shoot the 6 bra, it has been really easy to load for. For powder reloader 15.5 has worked very well for me. Alex wheeler chambered my barrel so I am using Lapua brass. I need to get out to Texas and Oklahoma and shoot some prs matches. Look forward to watching more of your content.
thanks Nate!
I have the small wheels for the Annealeez, and they work great for my 17 Fireball, which I believe is shorter than the 6 BRA.
Good to know Rodger! In reality, I had my eye on this annealer for a while and just wanted an excuse to get one! Thanks for watching!
Appreciate the video. I watched a video of Erik cortina interviews eric Trump and I thought they said this was the gun that shoots extremely tight. Thanks for posting
Hi SEKAF! Still loving the BRA and just got my custom reamer that my gunsmith designed for the BRA cartridge. Thanks for watching my friend!
I shoot and load the 6 BRA with a 90gr Sierra Game Changer and actually shot a deer with it this year.
HI Andrew! Man, a deer with a 90gr bullet? That had to be a really accurate hit...Nice shooting! I bought some 87 gr ELDM's to just break in the barrel, but honestly, I'm a bit nervous of how short those things are and how big that jump will be. I may load a few up just to see though. Thanks for watching Andrew and keep shooting straight!
@@The4GunGuy that's what's nice about about the Sierra Game Changer is that it's a fairly long bullet and I'm sitting at about .005 off the lands
Thanks for the knowledge
Thanks for watching Judodavid1!
With 6 Dasher Alpha brass, a special reamer is required for the loaded OD of the neck. The "standard" Dasher reamers do not give enough clearance. I do not know if BRA is the same, but that may be something to check into. If you're not getting consistent bullet release due to lack of clearance in neck area of chamber, erratic velocities would make sense.
Hey Justin! Good point. I got the specs from Preferred Barrel Blanks (the reamer specs) and from Alpha (the brass specs), then called both to talk things over...Great people on both of those companies. They said everything looked good. I'm hoping it's just that new brass and the real tell will be when I go through my fired brass reloading process. We'll see and I'll certainly keep the channel informed. By the way, I just found 10lbs of 4895 yesterday and ordered it, so that may make a big difference as well. Thanks for watching Justin!
I dont use guns, nor do I have a love of guns, but the presentation is excellent. (I suggest better thumbnails, but the audio is excellent)
Hey Wolf! Thanks for those kind words my friend and I appreciate your respectfulness of something you're not really into. I'll certainly consider your feedback and thanks for watching!
Great video! Thinking about 6BR 30* cause I have a lot of 30* tools. (6.5cm, 6.5prc & 300norma improved)
Hey Dragonfly! That makes total sense. I just found 10lbs of 4895 yesterday and ordered it, so that may make a big difference as well for me going forward. Thanks for watching Dragonfly!
Say,? You got a 30 inch cm barrel?
What kinda speed that pipe handle?
@@treece1 I think he's talking about the shoulder angle here (30 degrees for BR and 40 degrees for BRA), but I'd sure like to see what a 30" barrel does as well!
I’m using reloader15 in my 6 BRA 29.5 to 30.5 excellent results
Hi Peter! Thanks for the information on Reloder15 and thanks for watching my friend!
Me too!
My straight 6mm BR loves Reloader 15. I shot a season of F-Class using 105 Berger VLD’s and Lapua Brass. I was 4th over all. My velocities are very high for a straight BR. I am averaging 2950 fps. No pressure signs. I do have a bushed firing pin. My problem is I am out of Reloader 15. I do have an 8 pound jug of N140. The VLD’s do like to be jammed into the lands. Kreiger 28 1 in 8. I have another BR with a Broughton. I have not shot it yet.
Thanks I found this video helpful and informative. Are you happy with your choice to switch to 6BRA?
Hi Micah! VERY HAPPY. Recoil management is much better and I'm able to stay on or near target better after breaking my shot. Thanks for watching my friend!
Need to get some Varget and you be good. Run it around 2850 and she’ll settle in nice!
Hi Jay! I used Varget for the entire year because I couldn't find H4895 and was happy with Varget, but it never really gave me the confidence I was looking for. Luckily I've come into some H4895 and switching back to that. Don't get me wrong, Varget is very good, but you know how it is when you get used to a certain 'thing'. Thanks for watching my friend!
I'm convinced on the 6 BRA (Ackley). But I don't want to pick up a new caliber-- I already load 6.5 and 22 cal. 22 BRA is pretty much my dream, but finding dies and such is much harder than 6 bra, which is mainstream. 22BR is everywhere, 22 BR-A however is NOT. Alas, for the 22 cal I suppose the extra capacity and shoulder angle isn't as big a deal.
From my time with the 6.5 I have a lot of brass and bullets, but 22 creed seems to me like it's not a good competition round-- too overbore. It's quite a bit of efficiency penalty vs 22br-- lots more powder for just another 100fps or so.
Hi G5Hohn! I agree, and think we get too hung up on this stuff sometimes. I've watched people chase the newest thing, and yes, I did move to the 6BRA, but the reasoning was less recoil, as opposed to the 6.5 CM, which I've attained. The challenge I have with 22 cal stuff is that honestly, in a match, us spotters can miss impacts, and I've even seen the shooter not be able to confirm that he impacted, which is why, for competition, I've shied away from it. Also agree that reloading dies, etc... for the 22 cal stuff is not readily available and another reason to wait and see if it really does catch on. And your final statement about velocity is spot on, and I'm seeing some of the top shooters actually slow down so they can see trace better. Finally, I'm seeing more very good competitors come back to the 6.5 CM cartridge or stick with the 6mm CM round. Hey, thanks for the input and for watching my friend!
Any reason why you didn't just go with 6br instead of bra (or brx which uses the same die as the br)? I went from 6.5CM to 6br and it was super easy. 30 gr Varget, Berger 105s and CCI450s in Lapua brass and got around ~2800 fps with single digits SD and good groups. Added a tuner (ATS) and tightened it a little bit more. This was on the recommendation of a Pro shooter who is one of my mentors and I did zero load development. Was an amazingly easy transition.
HI Eric! Yeah, that's a really good point. The guys I shoot with were all going BRA, so it was a little of "follow the pack" and if they were having good luck why not. I finally found some H4895 yesterday so I'm going to wait until that arrives before I do any more loading and we'll go from there. I was leaning towards the BR because I didn't see any BRA brass or dies...Then I saw Alpha had it and the dies became available so I just dove in. We'll see how it all works out though. Hey thanks for watching Eric!
I think it depends on what node you want to shoot. Bra can handle the 2900 fps node lots easier than the Br, just like the dasher can handle the 3000 fps node easier than the bra.
Hi Treece! Agree with you here. I've just watched guys go for speed and burn the barrel out in 2,700 rounds, so I decided to slow it down a bit for longer barrel life. My velocity of 2,840 is working out very well so far and can't say enough good things about this cartridge! Thanks for watching my friend!
Did you consider getting the smaller wheels for the Annealeez? I think you'll like the Benchsource better either way.
Hi Joe! yeah, I thought about the smaller wheels, but honestly I was worried about burning them with the torch...these cases are so small! Thanks for watching!
Hey did you ever have any problems with the alpha brass as far as heavy bolt lift? I've had some people say stick to lapua because of these issues
Hi Bobby! I have not had issues and I've run Alpha in multiple 6mm BRA chambers. You may have heavy bolt lift when you're fire forming (which I do at the match now by the way), but once the case is formed to the chamber it should be fine. I've heard people say that you need the Alpha reamer, but again, I don't use one and have had no issues. Hope this helps and thanks for watching my friend!
@The4GunGuy thank you sir which reamer do you use by chance?
@@Forumrida38621 On my last barrel I used my gunsmith's reamer, but have since ordered one from JGS Precision based on my gunsmith's specs. Haven't had to run it yet, but probably next year I'll rebarrel. If you tell your gunsmith you use Alpha brass, but also want to be able to use Lapua, he should be able to fix you up.
@The4GunGuy ya from what I've read on the hide as long as the .200 line is .471 or smaller you can use both
When is it necessary to fire form? Is it when your changing the shoulder angle?
Hi Sammy! When you get new brass it will fire form in about 2 - 3 firings to your chamber. When you change barrels to a "pre-fit" barrel that is to SAAMI specs the brass will fire form to it. Now, a BIG 'BUT' HERE; If you have a custom chamber job on your barrel and you go back to a pre-fit barrel, you need to make sure that your case will fit the new pre-fit barrel. With that said, using a gunsmith to cut your new chamber will be of great benefit, since you can give him a piece of your CURRENTLY FIRE FORMED BRASS and he can get the chamber cut pretty darn close to that, which will minimize fire forming to the new chamber. Hope this helps and thanks for watching my friend!
@@The4GunGuy Thank you for your reply. I'm looking forward to watching more on this.
I hope you saved some of your brass. You will probably get 2000 rounds out of the barrel so that is only 4 firings. i would just use 200 pcs being you are using someone else's reamer.
I'm not too familiar with the 6BRA. I have 3 6BR's. I had a Krieger 1 in 10 twist (31") on one rifle and shot Berger 108's with N140. I could shoot bugholes at 300 yards. I now have a Brux 1 in 8 and am shooting Berger 108's over 31.5g of N140 at 2900 fps mv. Today I shot a 5 shot group that was .466 in 20 degree weather. The bullet will stabilize better when it gets warmer.
For some reason I could never get Varget to shoot better than N140. It shoots good just not as good. H4895 gave me the lowest ES but not the best groups. Reloder 15 shoot great also.
I would use a long drop tube instead of crunching powder. With low neck tension, the bullet can "grow" if you crunch. (check it an hour after you loaded it and see)
Good luck.
Hi Brett!! Man, thanks for the great input here. I have H4895 which is my "go to" load, so sticking with that for now. I do now use a drop tube (not really needed for the H4895 but use it anyway), and love it. I also have bought some IMR 4895 and plan to use that in the Summer when the temps are more stable...I'll work up a load for that when the time comes. I've looked at N140 and bought some N555 when things were tight and that's all you could find. Someday I'll play around with the N555, but for now, I have 24lbs of H4895 and 16lbs of IMR 4895 which should last me a while. Thanks for watching my friend!
@@The4GunGuy For what it's worth, I get the Berger 108's to shoot both .009 in the lands and .021 jump. The Sierra 107 seem to work best for me just kissing the lands. It was like that in both the Krieger and Brux barrels. Good luck.
@@brettinnj ahhh yeah, I forgot...I'm using Sierra MK 107's and loving them .020 off the lands. I've got 3k of them so not switching or even gonna try the bergers anytime soon. I'm also using a PBB barrel and have really liked them so far.
The crazy ED/SD would bother the heck out of me even if it groups well, what are you planning to do about it?
Hey Aaron! Yeah, I'm a numbers guy, so we'll see. The real tell will be when I go through my fired brass reloading process with the H4895 that I finally found yesterday. I'm thinking it's just the new brass and barrel AND the H4350 not giving me enough velocity. I'll keep the channel informed for sure. Thanks for watching Aaron!
@@The4GunGuy my money on H4350 being the biggest contributor. If it wasn’t crunching already I’d up the charge.
@@aaronl6977 That was why I could only load 31.5gr of 4350 because it was crunching even then. I think I'll be all good with the 4895. Thanks bud!
Curious whether you looked at 6 BRX vs 6 BRA?
Hi Krys! To be honest, my decision to go with the BRA was based on some pro shooters I know who said it was a very forgiving cartridge, with relatively low recoil...It is both those things. So I didn't look at anything else. I knew that the 6 CM was going to have more recoil, so that was out. Thanks for watching my friend!
This guy I bought a couple barrels from swears by AR comp in his BRA, mine shoots it ok, not as good as his, mine like Rl15, 4895, I mean, now, AR comp in mine, is backed off 2 grains, it burns noticeably cleaner than any powder Iv tried
AR Comp eh? I'm always looking at alternatives and will look into this one. It has decent temp stability at .77 compared to the great temp stability of H4895 at .23 and that .77 puts it at the middle of the temp pack so not too bad. I can't find it's burn rate on the chart, but if you're using less then it has to be faster than H4895 I'm assuming. Thanks for the tip Treece!
N133
Some ammo company needs to hire you and put you in R&D
Thanks B Pip! I love the numbers side of all this almost as much as actually shooting! Those Lobster tacos were off the hook by the way!
Curious. Why the shower curtain on the bench?
Hey Tex! Too much stuff on the peg board so I thought I'd just cover it up so you can focus more on what I'm talking about. Thanks for watching!
2k lol
It can be done for a little less money...
419 funnel could have went cheaper.
Each to their own I guess if you have a pocket full of money.
Hi Red! Yeah, I might have gone a bit over the top here. It could have been much higher had I upgraded to a $650 primer seater, $400 sizing die and a $375 seating die! Hey thanks for watching my friend!
@@The4GunGuy yes that primal seating primer is pricey..
I just got starter in nbrsa 6ppc and its s money pit to get everything. It took me s year to get what I needed.
I was planning on rebarrelling my savage 12 lrp to a 6bra or 30 br.
It won't be for competition but just something fun and accurate to shoot.
Good luck in your endeavors
Why not just shoot 6mm creed?
Hi Fred, I wanted to reduce recoil. The 6mm CM case has about 30% more volume than the BRA, which can translate into a higher recoil. Thanks for watching!
243 lol
Should have went with a six x forty seven. L a p u a
For the cost , don't think its worth it.
Hi Jeff! Yeah, it's a decision you make. I have to say that I'm very happy with the 6mm BRA round though and over time it saves me a lot on powder. BUT, I take my old 6.5 CM Bergara out once in a while and still love that round. Thanks for watching my friend!
I find it amusing when people quibble over $2k, considering the money sunk into just one of their rifles, $2k to $10k spent on just one outfit not including ancillaries that go with it.
