The symbol # is a sharp in musical manuscript Hashtag is a modern word for the same symbol when used this way as the lady here explains But a sharp # in music shown F # increases the F tone by a semitone and the same for any seven note scale for Example Do Ra Me Fa So La Te Do that is the Tonic Sol-Fa

Hashtags serve a better purpose on Instagram. They're searchable and increase your chance of being seen by more people. Since this video was made, we don't recommend using them on Facebook. Facebook was the last platform to adopt hashtags and they don't hold as much weight like on other platforms. - Erika

It's not a pound symbol, it is a number sign. The pound symbol is £.
I kind of agree..It`s a geographical thing..Americans use # as a pound or a number sign . They don`t have £ they have $ (-:

# is called a hash symbol, that's where the name hashtags comes from. You are tagging something with a hash.
