    REMEMBERING A LEGEND
Nelly Uchendu, MON (1950-2005) was a renowned Igbo Highlife musician. I remembered as a kid in late 80s, my mum always echoes her songs in our beautiful home then. What a lovely memory!! ...
Nelly Uchendu was an unconventional musician, amazingly talented; she was a song writer, content creator and singer. She wrote and sang most songs which contemporary musicians still sing up-to-date.
Nelly Uchendu hailed from Umuchu in Aguata LGA, Anambra State but spent all her life in Enugu state. During the time of Jim Nwobodo, she was the voice that sang his praises and later featured in "things fall apart" with Pete Edochie where she acted as Ikemefula's mother.
Nelly Uchendu 1976 song "Love Nwantinti" shot her to fame with Six Albums to her credit.
    Among her songs were;
    Ezigbo Dim
    Wakaabout husband
    Udum
    Etc
This beautiful woman with a golden voice was snatched away by the cold hands of death in 2005. She died after an unsuccessful battle with cancer. she should have been in her 70s if she was still alive.
May her gentle soul continue to RIP
    #BenUgwoke

Memories! As a tiny kid visiting Enugu, I had the good fortune of being in the studio when this song was recorded at Goddy Oku’s Studios in Uwani, Enugu (located at the corner of Grant Street and Ohafia Street). In fact, the guitar accompaniment and solo that you hear on the song was provided by the late great Goddy Oku (founder and band leader of the Hygrades) himself. The song itself was produced by another late great artiste, Sonny Oti (of “Nkosi Nwam” fame), who started the Theatre Arts Dept of Unijos and had several plays on NTA back then. In fact, the male “gbam, gbam, gbam” background vocals was rendered by Sonny Oti. May the great gentle souls of Nelly, Goddy and Sonny all rest in eternal peace.

Aunty Nelly as I fondly call her used to visit us in the 80's.Then she was at the height of her fame. Come the 90's we lost contact only for us to meet again at Enugu during a promo for NIGERIA 99.She was performing & I gladly did back up vocals for her. So beautiful & so talented. No-one remembers me for I was just a back up singer but we shall never forget our Princess of songs. Adieu Aunty.

Father used to play this on his stereo when I was very young. I loved it so much back then in my preschool days, especially when it was raining, and I and my twin brother were cuddled beneath our warm blanket listening to the sound of Nellie's voice, sounding in sync with the raindrops hitting our metallic roof. Oh how time flies... Life is but a dream. Rest in peace Father.

This was when, in Nigeria, music was done by Musicians, who had to perfect playing several musical instruments, do strenuous voice training, spend months, or even years, constructing the poetry of songs, finding a message to pass on, and finally putting everything together to create masterpieces that transcend time and generations...Evergreens!
Today, we have Singers, churning out God-knows-what, from the reveries of warped minds under psychotropic stupor, and fizzling out, sometimes, in less than six months; mass producing message-less dirges and empty, half-baked songs: sex and money.

I hope you understand that this song is not critical of young women, it's condemning wife beating boorish old alcoholic men who marry young women by enticing them with material things instead love. The young female character in this song went for love but got an abuser--a despicable wife beating drunk. The song only cautions young women against marrying hurriedly, and to philanderers. You Nigerian men should stop viewing women as your opponents who must be conquered with lies even on TH-cam.

This makes nostalgia leaking off my mind. I'm so full of it rn. It's on repeat.
Nelly Uchendu died in April 2005 at 55. May her humble soul rest in peace.
It is still her who sang "Love Nwantinti" - released 1976. Nostalgia !!!! OmG

I only remember Festac 77. I was 7 and I remember one notable actor dramatizing the part of the drunkard. I hope I am not mis-remembering Sha.
