Thank you for the very informative video. We recently visited Belfast, and many of us in the US did not realize there was a Wall. Belfast seemed vibrant and peaceful. However some of the people we talked with weren’t ready for the Wall to come down. Helpful hint: consider adding subtitles for those of us who only understand American accents.

My mum works right on the wall, at a school. When I go there there is always arguing and to this day, I’m not aloud to go outside. It scary if you ever go near there
I’ve crossed this gate/wall at least every week from I’ve been 15, the gates hold so many memories for me. I had to drive through them to get to the royal Maternity hospital twice to pick up my wife and newborn babies and another 2 times when my missus unfortunately had two still borns. I had to cross these gates to go to Springfield tech where I learned how to be a welder, I had to cross these gates when I worked in Conway mill. I crossed these gates to meet a girl I went with when I was 17. I crossed these gates when I run the Belfast marathon twice. You speak to my granda or uncles these walls hold so many bad memories for them I.e rioting or one having his house burnt down just off larnick way. For me being from ballysillan and having this wall and gate in my life it has become normal to see, I don’t think now that when I drive through I’m going to the other side where there may be people who don’t like me for what I am. I’d love the walls to come crashing down and both sides to get on with each other.
Thanks for your service and its sad that it's all been in vain. Peace never was achieved, Unionist traditions are trampled on and you lads the brave vetrans is being witch hunted while IRA terrorists walk free and even hold positions of political power.
Being from England I will never fully understand but it shocks me that the issues of the troubles still exist not at bad as the 70s of course but still
I think it will take decades to end. As NI children we learn about catholics and prods at a very early age where we don’t even understand what it means. As young children we just hated each other without even knowing the history behind it. Some people live with that hate forever but some people like me understand the history of Northern Ireland as we get older and see each other as equal
If it was up to the younger generation then there would be no wall, no divisions, no British occupation and respect for each other’s cultures. But then again, if it was up to the younger generation we wouldn’t have people like Boris and Trump in power, we can only wait and hope for change without resentment.
Without this "british occupation" our British rights, traditions and culture will be erased in brutal forms. Wee bit of advice from a loyalist free off charge, if you want to act like you want everyone to respect eachother and try and heal the wounds of the past you wouldnt be using words like British occupation as that is a aggressive attack on Unionists in general and it reveals what's under your mask, nothing more than a pure breed republican scum. In my eyes there will be no respect until one of the side's is completely removed from NORTHERN IRELAND.
Ulster Infidel you talk about respect and preserving your ‘culture’ then say you want an entire side ‘wiped out’, doesn’t add up. Ireland is under British occupation, that’s a fact and will that will change. I’m not a ‘pure breed’ republican, I come from a mixed family who are able to respect each other, unlike ‘pure breed’ loyalist families who pass on their delusions. British culture will always exist in Britain where it belongs.
Tanx for the video. Those responsible for council estates against council estates against each other have a lot to answer for common man against each other what a cancer the law of karma will come back to haunt them for imposing that on innocent kids.🔑🤝🙏🏻
This video was posted 2 years ago, there was troubles again at the peace wall about 4 months ago, the walls will never come down. it’s always gonna be a rivalry between the 2 communities
as im apart of the younger generation, i do hope that the walls will come down, not now obviously as loads of people are still living in the troubles. i believe that maybe in our great grandchildrens lives the walls wont be up. ive been on both sides of the walls with my drama group, east meets west. at the end of the day we're all human, no matter of skin colour, political views, religion.
These walls will only come down when people who live on either side of them feel safe and comfortable living side by side each other. Its easy for people to say take them down theres peace now , if your not from the area that these walls stand around then you wont understand that its not as easy as removing walls and everything will be okay, time is a great healer and when the time is right the walls will be taking down but if you rush into things the conflict between the two sides could reach the point where theres trouble in northern ireland again and all the hard work over the past 20 years will be for nothing.
Good documentary, not much us/them politicking. As one born and bred on the other side of the wall I share the desire for us all to live together in harmony. The only realistic solution is an independent Ulster in which Ulster-British and Ulster-Irish can both feel at home and prosper. In the long term gov.uk will not do what it takes to protect Ulster and gov.ie only pays lip service to a united ireland when it needs the green vote. No, gov.ie cannot and will not ever risk disrupting the ROI economy by taking on 1,000,000 angry Ulster-British. Let us bury the hatchet and make Ulster the greatest nation state on the island of ireland once again.
I live in Belfast but am not protestant or catholic, nationalist or unionist. I can't stand the divide but it's never going to change without education and a change of attitude, which is unlikely.
@@adrianoromanoski it's not very noticeable for tourists, but for people living here it's obvious the segregation between people, but it's getting better!

We have been here in Ireland for 100s of years we are a people and ethnic group that came into existence on this land and although we must respect the Irish we must fight for our right to exist. In a united island we would be subject to the will of the majority and be without our own state. The Republic of Ireland already exists, trying to force us to join them is like England trying to make Scotland part of England due to the anglo saxons that live in the lowlands
It's true that the Irish where here first but they replaced the neolithic population who in turn replaced the WHG population. No Northwestern European people are indigenous
The Irish free state ethnically cleansed the Protestants from 20% to 2% and are in denial that a large part of the population, though catholic, is from British ancestry. Ulster Protestants must not surrender- their nationality, culture, religion and identity. I’m glad to see the 12th keeps getting bigger.
@Marcus McGee As for my name we aren't sure how far back it goes if my paternal ancestor just adopted an Irish name or was Irish himself, probably was Irish convert to Protestantism. I have distant Irish ancestry on my mothers side also from a great great grandmother. I am proud of both my Irish and British ancestry, but I don't want to see my ethnic group without a country of our own as I believe it would lead to the eventual dissolution of us as a people and culture.

I have some great memories of nights out in Laverys, the Errigle Bar, Bar Twelve off Botanic Avenue and the pub on the top of Ashley Avenue, the name of which I forget. I actually met the late great snooker player Alex Higgins one night in Dukes Hotel bar. I got some flack from both sides because of my Free State accent. Thankfully I was never beaten up or anything like that. There was an absolutely terrific Indian take-way on the Ormeau. How I miss their garlic nan bread.

I'm a 45 year old from Canada and although I knew a bit about The Troubles, I didn't know about the walls of Belfast, until recently. It reminds me of the Berlin Wall.
The Berlin Wall and it's reasons were very different and you can't compare it to tje Belfast peacelines!!!
Fantastic, loved this film. Hopefully one day this will be a distant memory. thank you so much.!!
What an amazing doc!! Very moving! 👍👍👍

100% right!
I used to work with a few protestants and they totally changed around July time, about August-September they came round again,I called it the billy blues lol
I don't think the walls will ever come down as bitterness will always stem for the 12th of July, growing up in West Belfast during the troubles was crazy, well ballymurphy was anyway but I wouldn't change it for the world.

GREAT FILM HELLO FROM ROYAL COUNTY MEATH IRELAND
Beautiful people on both sides of the divide, being stuck in the middle, 9 tours worth, you are being HELD back by your dinosaurs, who are now in their 60s/ 70s. From an English paratrooper/ BRIT BASTARD! We’re all HUMAN, act it! Brilliant documentary. Thank you, over thirty years ago since y was last there. Mochara
Excellent little film!
Now that is what I call a documentary !
edit : but a as non Irish I'll admit I could use some subtitles to better grasp the subtleties
Use TH-cam caption “on”
Worked for me great .
I'm from Northern Ireland and this is just so sad how people lived like this
Hey Sean I've just stumbled across your channel its fantastic stuff. Keep making content like this please!
Time heals all wounds.
Leah is the embodiment of the healing that is taking place with each new generation.
Like Berlin, eventually all walls fall.
Very well done...
McGee is free now but the 5 innocent people who were in bed trying to sleep never knew what hit them. Evil beyond belief, the bomber was.
just lettin yous know that more people have died in the past 10 years from suicide than from the 30 years of the troubles.
Aodhán McVeigh aye it’s sad like to see people get to that state
Aye a lot of young teenagers just attention seeking little bastards pretending to be depressed and haven’t went through what other people have gone through and all the people who are depressed you don’t hear a peep out of
@@matthewb606 I'm getting told I have depression from the doctors butt I dont feel it
EAT DON /Éatan well if doctors are telling you if you have it that’s not attention seeking if that what ur trying to say and I’m not sure or not but some people don’t feel sad they just are tired and lose motivation to do stuff I’m not sure but exercise is the best thing to do it makes you feel great about yourself
EAT DON /Éatan ye bro
Myself coming from Australia I know that the troubles have done so much hurt on both sides iam a protestant but I do strongly believe that the British government should be out of Ireland completely regards to you all from me in Australia.
aye and what about the half of the population that are british? if it was that simple it would have been over years ago.
It was Catholics that brought the British soldiers here not protestants then they turned on them buy setting them up with girls to met soldiers so they could kill them ,sandwiches had class put in them so the soldiers would be cut up inside I could go on I was brought up right through it all I have catholic friends and sometimes it can get hairy as they would make comments like ur man said poor catholics well some poor catholic set my uncle up and took him away to be shot but butchered before that he was not in anything just a hard working man in the yard who looked after his mum after my uncle came outta the 2ed world war he was a desert rat 8th army he went through a world war to be shot by his own friends son and friends were is it that protestants say poor protestants I'd love to see us unite but not as United ireland let us just forget the past and carry on sadly ppl on both sides will never agree
Well done sir love from Iran
that girl at the start, with her bf from the other community, is the building blocks.
My mum works right on the wall, at a school. When I go there there is always arguing and to this day, I’m not aloud to go outside. It scary if you ever go near there
Superb - well done to all involved
I did 5 tours of Northern Ireland god bless Belfast you deserve peace from an ex Para ✌🏻
Thanks for your service and its sad that it's all been in vain. Peace never was achieved, Unionist traditions are trampled on and you lads the brave vetrans is being witch hunted while IRA terrorists walk free and even hold positions of political power.

I'm from derry and from what my grandmother and mum and dad told me about the troubles is that humanity is screwed up
Well Done... beautifully told..
The history good or bad I've always been drawn to NI
It gets under the skin.
Very interesting video. Would love to see Belfast in the future.
End all hate
I understood about 60% of what was being said... The automatic subtitles didn't help either.
Absolutely brilliant film, Séan
No chance the walls will come down too many bitter people.. imagine the 11th night and no wall . Be murder
Imagine no peace walls now Easter 2021.. lol huns going nutts
Amazing film. Where will i be able to access this poem read at the end of the film? Would love to use it for a university project
Good stuff!
This wall is the United Kingdom's national disgrace, and should be demolished immediately.
Do you live beside the walls?
It protects Protestants from Republican hatred.
England is United Kingdom’s national disgrace and all it’s power trips over minorities and countries that aren’t it’s to control.
Peace n lovd
Does the poem at the end have a name?
An-mhaith Sean.. Very good
I am Amrican ( He says with pride) And I'm listening to two men talk on here Fascinated, but, I can't understand two words either says to each other!
Great film!
My Uncle Im Really Shocked :(
I didn’t understand that one boy when he was talking
Hopefully future generations can end the divide.
Why not this one
Interesting indeed
Peace Wall is a barrier to peace 😮
Great video 👍🏻
Big man aiden with da speech
Born and raised right there
I live in Belfast but am not protestant or catholic, nationalist or unionist. I can't stand the divide but it's never going to change without education and a change of attitude, which is unlikely.

ireland will never be the same again. belfast will forever be divided, take the politics out of it and there is still so much hate towards each other it will always be catholics vs protestants, the unspeakable actions that took place there has left the country scarred and nothing will change. i wouldnt take the wall down, i wouldnt like to see what happens after.
Impressively told story
@@andrewkavanaugh6951 your carrying a Gaelic name
@Marcus McGee As for my name we aren't sure how far back it goes if my paternal ancestor just adopted an Irish name or was Irish himself, probably was Irish convert to Protestantism. I have distant Irish ancestry on my mothers side also from a great great grandmother. I am proud of both my Irish and British ancestry, but I don't want to see my ethnic group without a country of our own as I believe it would lead to the eventual dissolution of us as a people and culture.

I lived in Belfast for 16 years from the mid 1990s to 2012. Mainly on the Lisburn Road and Ormeau areas, not far from Queen's University.

You know, I was hoping to see my own, they mentioned Springfield Rd. but then again I wonder if I'd recognize it, it's been 40 years since I've been there

Very interesting . I happily drive between the two places and know people from all denominations in west Belfast but because I’m English no one cares..I guess I’m afforded neutrality...People want change especially now with corruptionvirus, people are scared of speaking out . I bet if you asked everyone individually they’d all want the walls down but a few would say no because of what their neighbours might say..
