The year was 1989 and I was a young pup working in a lumber yard in Denton, Tx. and this guy pulls into the yard for some lumber in a U- haul truck. When he opened the door, there were drum cases with the name Russell Kunkel on them! Another guy came in later and he owned half the square in Denton. His name was Clint Ballard, jr... He wrote , "You're No Good" for Linda Rondstadt!. I was so lucky!
Mr Sklar, please document your tales of the road in some kind of way. It would be criminal if you kept all of these wonderful experiences untold! If you write a book , it will be about 3volumes long I'll bet ! The anticipation is growing and building ! Fast!!
That parrot of Joe Lala's was NOT a parrot, but an amazing Scarlet Macaw named Bongo! Joe used to leave Bongo at my house while gigging. One day my mother and step-father were visiting me in Van Nuys from Las Vegas. I walked into my house not knowing that they had not yet arrived. Their little dog was hiding in a bedroom and Bongo was nowhere to be found. The dog was covered around its mouth with hundreds of bird feathers! I was afraid that the dog ATE Bongo! Well.......The upshot to this whole story is that Joey had taken Bongo to gig at a Bee Gee's concert and Bongo had his own chrome bird stand for on stage! I love you Lee Sklar and enjoy all of your videos and your playing!
Just the same magic guys who backed James Taylor and Carole King at the Troubadour in those legendary concerts I watch every other night on TH-cam. Will keep watching until the end🤗🤗🤗
Didn't know all this stuff about LaLa, but remember him vividly in Manassas when they came to town and his amazing percussion s on that amazing album. Great stories Lee , keep em coming.
Oh my God! I can’t believe that you two are together again, from the old James Taylor days. I’m stunned that you two are back together and hanging out. I seriously freaking can’t believe I’m seeing this. Two of the masters of music and player’s from my youth, I just can’t believe it! No shit, Leland is just like Ronnie Wood, in that he is just as competent in another medium than music. I absolutely loved this segment.
Just want to say that when I was in high school 1000yrs ago and taking Science, I was rubbish at it because when I was doing science, and I heard the word ‘Chemistry’, I wasn’t thinking H2O or NaCl, I was thinking about a tight rhythm section - like this (on and off the stage)!❤
Great to hear these Absolute legends bounce off each other...still great players just as they were in the 70s when they owned the studio and touring scene. Lucky to hear these gurus.
This guy has been one of my favorite drummers for a long time I seen him in 70s 80s with several bands on and off great drummer huge inspiration to me love you Russ glad you're still around God bless
Love it! I’ve been listening to these guys for decades and finally saw them live with Lyle Lovett from the front row. What a great experience that was.
As if it weren't awesome enough just hearing these two giants reminisce , Russ chose Beck for the incidental music. I've noticed Beck's Dad is in the JT album cover jacket pics working with these guys.
Russ... you still have those Roger North drums that were on the cover of “Running on Empty”? Roger’s from right here in Portland, OR where I live and like myself and all the other local drummers, we’d walk into a local club when he was developing the design and the first thing out of our mouths would be “... what the fuck?!?!” Seems they were mainly designed to project into the room at small, local clubs.
Are you kidding me? That was at least an hour too short. Reminded me of Seinfeld's Comedians Getting Coffee or whatever its called except much shorter. Where's my cigarette lighter ..... MORE MORE
1:42 “why would I be with you if I didn’t have my equipment? 1:52 camera pans, shows them sitting oh so close with Lee’s arm around Him Me: is nothing sacred?! Get Lee out of WeHo now!
i love the fake switch anecdote..over the last 30 years i've played bass at a lot of gigs and ironically once i was asked to do something with my sound by someone i suspected of being a blow hard sound guy so i thought i'd do a little experiment and PRETENDED to move my knob and looked up with a how's that?..when i got the thumbs up i realized that i learned a new trick..it hasn't come up often but when it does i know what to do..lol.
I mixed monitors for about 20 years or so. Have done many tours. I cant even remember how many times I've done the fake knob twist almost always with the same response from many artists. A big thumbs up. Just letting you all know, it works both ways.
Two of my all-time favorites in the same video...I'm in heaven!!! It would take me too long to list the times I have seen you two playing together with various artists over the years! (Yeah, I'm THAT old...lol!!) Also, nice to see you smiling, Russ...but being with a good friend always makes that so easy. Love you both!!! 😍
@MorbidManMusic It's true... it IS a job. But if you're good, you get called a lot. Sklar has recorded something north of 25,000 songs, movie soundtracks, and has been busy since 1970. Likely, anytime you listen to the radio, or go to the movies, or watch stuff on TV, you're listening to him. His range is pretty much the complete musical spectrum. You don't get 50 years of continuous, high-level output if you're not in a class by yourself. There isn't a bass player living who can pull out a resume and discography like Sklar.
Much respect to Leyland Sklar, truly a total musician. Your discography and live gigs speak volumes. Russ Kunkle not so much. An extremely generic and boring player. Can't figure out how you got all those session dates...bless your heart.

Man these guys have a LOT of history together, I've been reading their names on the back of records for 55 years or more ! Amazing !
Reason why a lot of us drummers play drums and bass players play bass...thank you!!! Artists of all generations.
Even Lees house looks like him!!!
Leland Sklar started a TH-cam channel recently. Dont miss it. Great content from one of the masters.
Just found it - binge watching.
It’s an incredible and addicting channel.
Russ and Lee Brothers for Life!!!!!

Amazing these two are allowed out unsupervised !!

Haha - ripping story. I know Joe Lala from his work alongside Steve Stills and various cohorts. Clearly the man knew what was truly important in life!
Just the same magic guys who backed James Taylor and Carole King at the Troubadour in those legendary concerts I watch every other night on TH-cam.
Will keep watching until the end🤗🤗🤗
The historic accomplishments of these two human metronomes is unbelievable.
One of the most killer rhythm sections in history!
Didn't know all this stuff about LaLa, but remember him vividly in Manassas when they came to town and his amazing percussion s on that amazing album. Great stories Lee , keep em coming.
How can you not love Leland??? This guy is funny as hell... got stories about everything and what a hellava memory
Two great names I used to see on the back of record albums, quite a lot.

These guys are the real thing ... I am glad they can still make videos like this.
Love it! I’ve been listening to these guys for decades and finally saw them live with Lyle Lovett from the front row. What a great experience that was.
Long time friends. Very cool to see in a weary world.
I just saw this for the first time. FANTASTIC! I loved it. Great stuff! 👍👍👍👍
Would love to hang out with these guys. The stories they could tell...
that was so fun. I have admired both of you guys my whole life. thanks.
I'll never forget the first time I met Lee and Russell. A bit teary that day.
2 Legends
Great guys.Heart and soul of a band.
This "interview" is platinum/diamond!
Russ Kunkel: "Hey Lee, I have a question for you".
Lee Skyler : "Sure, what's up?"
Russ Kunkel: "Do you have any hair I can borrow?"
This is great! What chemistry!
Marvelous! Thanks for doing it and especially for all the music you both did together! I knew an album was worth my "listen", when you two were on it.
The pic of "Tommy Tedesco" is actually Howard Roberts.
that is so cool guys,.Mr. sklar is one great man, a true master and decent human being, just like neil peart was, cool.
Man this was classic stuff. And those stories. How cool. Thanks for sharing guys. I love all your history in music.
Both masters and funny to boot!
😂 Producer switch...that’s great!
He also played with Stevie nicks.
Lee my favourite nostalgia interviewee.
Heart of a lot of my favorite tunes in the 70s.
Amazing. I lover everything about this!
That was fun! Thanks, guys!
Thx so much for taking your time to share your amazing lives with us
Great stuff! Just a small correction though, the picture @ 4:46 that says 'Tommy Tedesco' is actually Howard Roberts.
Del Shannon and Bryan Hyland Wow! 2 names Ive not heard in a long time
loved it!
I love the way that guy with long hair never did drugs...what's his name...?
Lee is such a nice guy.....so humble and kind. The Tim Mcgraw song is about him!!
wow - love it
What did they play at the end? "Running On Empty"?
Awesome!!!
Did Russ do more of these?
As if it weren't awesome enough just hearing these two giants reminisce , Russ chose Beck for the incidental music. I've noticed Beck's Dad is in the JT album cover jacket pics working with these guys.
The last instrumental piece of music with the wolf whistle is Kronos Quartet, "Mini Skirt".
2 friends cruising and playing

i support their marriage and wish them the best

Did you play with the great Mike Landau?
I heard Russ Marched 27th Lancers. That to me is much more impressive than any albums he did and the main reason why.
Old friends
Isn't that a picture of Howard Roberts and not Tommy Tedesco?
True

WAY better than Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee...and the budget was under $100k...go figure!
Russ was also married to the beautiful Nicolette Larson.
He was also engaged to Carly Simon.....

This dude Sklar can play any genre. He can go from James Taylor to Metallica. And play it flawlessly.
@MorbidManMusic Most Bass players aren't in his league.

Lee....as a former fabricator.....please don't run the plasma torch without safety equipment....
I wonder how many times he's set his beard on fire ?
Not a huge fan of Lee's political rants because he IS a master bassists. Not a politician. Let's stay on the good side of the force. Music!!
First Ammendment, dude. He can say whatever he likes, and if you don't like it, go somewhere you can't hear it.

You clearly have no taste
I guess you'd rather a drummer wrecks a song by playing a bunch of crap that it doesn't need ?
@cjcurtis8944 plenty of taste over hear...I'll sell you some.
