    I use the power box for so much. I originally wanted it for ice fishing, and it works great, but it became more useful during a power outage, I took it camping, carried it in my pickup, in my boat, on the back patio, in fact I'm using it for a power supply for my notepad at this very moment. I can't believe how useful this portable power has been. I will have to see about building a couple for my friends. Awesome video and nice product, keep up the good work.

    18 gauge and smaller wire I like to solder the tips to stiffen them up before crimping and then I break off the plastic over the F1 terminals and use heat shrink tubing. That stiffens them up and I have never had crimp loosen, break off, or short the fuse. So if you got the time do the project a solid and take the extra step.

    John, awesome video content, awesome project, nothing critical to say. I have an issue with my DIY box I am building. It is the wiring. I am messing it up somewhere, and cannot seem to get it right. The jacks work perfectly. The panel and LEDs, are not working, as in no power at all, not to main switch. I am running 2 jacks, a 4 way panel w/ 12v outlet, voltmeter, USA, and main switch. Then running 3 LED bars. I have switches for each jack, and each LED bar, and if course main switch. Any idea what I could have messed up? I ran in this sequence;
    1. From battery positive with inline fuse, to the "T" out jacks, spades went to "In" on each switch, then out from switch to each positive post. Then positive from the "T" to main switch "in" on the 4 way panel.
    2. From Main switch "out" to 12v, usb, and voltmeter, "in".
    3. Still need to get power to LED bars, each bar, different color, has its own switch, so I can use green, red, or white light.
    4. The run negatives back correctly.
    You fast forwarded through the wiring, so I know I missed something.
    Hope to hear from, and get some help.

      Yes the volt meter let's you know state of charge. And how long the charge lasts is relative. I've seen em last a day and I've seen em last a year.

    • @ericklein5097
      @ericklein5097 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are using lead acid you can use a voltmeter or a battery gauge that uses multiple bars. You can roughly estimate state of charge with those. The battery has to rest with no charge or discharge to get an actual voltage reading that is accurate so consider that when reading your voltmeter or fuel gauge.
      For Lithium Iron Phosphate voltage is just about useless except for the bottom 10% and the top 10%. 80% in the middle, voltage will more than likely deceive you. The charge/discharge curve is so flat along the middle 80% that a battery at 13.15V could be 70% or it could be 30%. In that case you need coulomb counting, that is counting the Amp Hours going in and out of the battery. There are a bunch of meters starting around $20 but the good ones start at $40. You tell the meter how many AH your battery is and it counts the AH going in or out (some cannot account for bidirectional flow!) and uses that number subtracted from your AH setting you put in the meter to determine how much you have left and doesn't use voltage to give you a percentage. So a 100Ah battery that has had 34Ah pulled out is at 66% if it can be drained down to 0Ah which for LiFeP04 is typically 2.5V. Yes, you can drain LiFeP04 down to "zero" (just not zero volts, 2.0 or 2.5 is the minimum for most cells with some companies cutting off the battery around 2.7 to extend the number of cycles). There is actually some data out there (2 papers I think) supporting the idea that draining LiFeP04 down to 20% actually creates a "memory" effect that will cause the capacity to decrease. I typically drain mine down to 5% or 10% before cutting off the loads just to leave a little bit of juice left in it to avoid overdischarge.

    Thanks again, John! Now that I've watched several of your builds and I'm done with my mimic of your 2nd kit with the Plano box, I notice that on this one you chose not to use the fuse block connectors for the grounding and distribution. Are there pros/cons to doing one master fuse v. using the 6-fuse connector block? Also, what is the base box used for this kit? The name panel is drilled through blocking the brand. This box has fewer plastic supports and looks like the fuse block would fit easily in the space under the handle without needing to Dremel the supports out of the way. Thanks!!

      This one is a 50 cal box just like my very first one on here. Almost twice the size of the field box in version 2. I used a diy kit sold by iceholepower.com to build this. The fuse is part of the kit. It's cheaper to go inline fuse and really as long as the system has some sort of fuse, its really personal preference on how it's done. This kit comes with the box and is pre drilled as well

    If anyone is reading this in 2022 and thinking about using lithium, lithium ion and LiFeP04 do not do well in cold temps. You cannot charge below freezing and up to 10 Celsius you should use a low charge rate. Discharge is significantly reduced and I would not recommend discharging if the cells are below freezing unless at a very low rate. Below 15 Celsius you will get about 60-80% of actual capacity
    INSTALL HEATING PADS IN YOUR BATTERY BOX
    Or use Lithium Titanate. Its pretty expensive but 40,000 cycles and very temp resilient and extremely safe

    Ok my previous comment was a joke because when I heard Ice Holes I immediately thought of the character in the Johnny Dangerously movie. But now for a real comment, or question. Is this really what you'd call DIY? I mean it's just unassembled they could have put it together for just a couple $ more. I don't mind that they save the couple $ and you put it together but I was looking for an actual DIY box because I have a different purpose(actually a couple) and thought this might enlighten me. The product is fine but I'm underwhelmed by the DIY aspect. I watched your previous videos that were DIY and figured this was an improvement on that.
