1977, what a year, i was 16, just left school, we had The Jam, The Sex Pistols, Northern Soul, Watneys Special Beer, Beautiful, all natural women, who didn't set off metal detectors, and dressed to show off their figure, not their tattoos.. And I saw Tommy Cooper in a midnight cabaret at Butlins a few months before this was recorded, absolutely brilliant live
Watching this and seeing Julie Andrews perform is a reminder in 2024 of how long her association with the Royal Variety Performances has been. She first performed the National Anthem at the Royal Command Performance for the Queen's father in 1948 at the ago of 13. If she were to perform for the present King Charles she would have an incredible hat trick of performing for three British Monarchs spanning at least 76 years of her much longer career which would probably be an incredible first for any performer and testament to her long and illustrious career in show business.
Great to be able to enjoy this once again. The Royal Variety was a must watch and signalled that Christmas was fast approaching. Sadly, this also illustates how poor the vast majority of recent shows are.
It was in the mid 70's that Andrews found her absolute peak vocal form. By this point its a mature rich soprano voice with perfect pitch and incredibly wide range. Her stage presence is poised, warm, confident, and inviting. Have you noticed that she never seems to make a mistake ?
I noticed that Bob Hope has slowed down his delivery pace for this performance. I believe it is because of the language barrier although Brits and Americans speak the same language it can be difficult to understand each other's accents so the audience needs more time to get what he is saying. They say timing is everything for a comedian. Bob Hope wrote in an autobiography that his style is to deliver jokes at a fast pace. When he toured the American southern states he noticed that his jokes weren't going over as well as they had in the north and he realized that southerners speak with a slow drawl. He slowed his pace and then the jokes worked. He is a master of timing.
I was 7 years old then when this was broadcast .....and i ALLWAYS love watching the royal vareity performeances each year ( still do but they aint the same as they used to be now the headliner at the end performs one or two songs if its a singer ( the last one was only one song and a bit of a let down tbh for the so called headliner! ) i remember when they had a headliner on in past shows like this and they got a good 10 to 15 min to close the show in style! ) as for Tommy Cooper as some one mentioned i remeber this at 7 years old watching the silver jubille performance and SADLY remember watching live on TV the live from her majesty's show when i was 14 in 1984 and remember seeing him collapse etc and turned round to my mum and said "somethings not right" even i KNEW as a 14 yr old somthing was not right or gone wrong when he didn't get up ! R.I.P Tommy Cooper one of the great late comedians of the time ...they dont make em like that anymore ( even WHAT they call VARIETY has changed so much over the years!) Me as an individual was glad to grow up in the 70s and 80s when what i would call TRUE VARIETY still existed!
The brilliant John Dankworth, John Williams with the lovely Cleo Laine, the great Tommy Cooper was always funny and the lovely Shirley always worth watching, and nice to see Bob Hope as the host.
Little and Large. Another crap "comedy" duo, along with Morecambe & Wise, Mike & Bernie and Cannon & Ball. Even the Chuckle Brothers were funnier than them.
Thank you so much for uploading
I think this is great. So many big names of the past. Really wonderful to see 👍👍
I’ve been trying to find this for YEARS! So happy I did! Thank you for uploading!!

I remember Hylda Baker commenting on Nureyev "He's that famous ballet dangler". 😊

"When Rudolph Nureyev leaps across the stage, his talent sticks out a mile !" - Hylda Baker
Yes, Hylda also commented on Nureyev "He's that famous ballet dangler". 😊

The kind of show that will never be staged again.
And how young they all were ...
and I’ll sing once more🤩🤩🤩. Such a voice!
What fab performers they had in the day. Nothing today

Can i ask are you American of English? If American do they play Royal variety over there every year?
The act Tommy did was the one he did when he died on stage. RIP Tommy.
This is absolute 24 Carat Gold.
Little and Large ironically known as a comedy act.
Rich little, arguably the greatest impressionist ever...not sure what his act was tonight..his Englebert sounded pretty similar to Tom Jones
Fun fact: The same recording of “We Got Us” by the Muppets in this performance can also be heard on the second Muppet Show record.
There's a number missing from the Brotherhood of Man's act. I think it may have been Save Your Kisses for Me?
Produced by Lord Grade's Associated Television!😊
No Dame Vera?
Tommy was one of our most loved and funny commedieans, but by this stage he was on the way down sadly.
The brilliant John Dankworth, John Williams with the lovely Cleo Laine,
the great Tommy Cooper was always funny and the lovely Shirley always worth watching,
and nice to see Bob Hope as the host.
Yes Bob Hope -reading the lot as usual.
Is it bad that I find Pam Ayres quite alluring❤️
She was my father-in-law's secretary at JARIC.
It's so dark it's unwatchable.
That happens sometimes depending on the quality.
Yes it is
@@BluetheFortune2006 it was fine, thank you for uploading the whole thing
I have a bulb blown in my tv lol and i still found it watchable and great even if it was a little darker
What no conveyor belt this week??
Bob Hope wad a Brilliant host on this Royal Variety show.
Cloe Lane WOW 😊
Shame it was so dark.
Now I remember why I absolutely detested 'Little and Large' who were about as funny as an ingrowing toenail.
Spot on mate , they should have been done under the trade description act calling themselves comedians 🤣🤣
Little and Large. Another crap "comedy" duo, along with Morecambe & Wise, Mike & Bernie and Cannon & Ball. Even the Chuckle Brothers were funnier than them.
@@cupcakefairy87 wash your mouth out.
Lizzie hated it all apparently!
In the years when their were real stars.
BROTHERHOOD OF MAN....BRILLIANT. Shows we had it better than ABBA. But why not do highwayman which was the single at the time?
Bob Hopes comments re Anwar Sadat & the current crisis with Netanyahu now - 50 years later & it’s all happening again!
