You look at all the great and good of British film industry and theatre and stage stars. When we still only had BBC1 & 2 and ITV I remember watching all these Royal Variety shows from the mid 70’s to the mid 80’s as the best of it all This is 1980 and I suppose a long time ago as who is still alive For me I was 15 and even in 1980 times were happy. You had more freedoms and you loved life Yes there were horrible things going on but it did not affect you so much 🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️🇬🇧🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴😀😀
With most of this exceptional cast now gone, there are still some of us who remember this unforgettable show. From Brucie on roller skates to JR drying in front of the whole nation were truly memorable, but for me it has to be the orchestra and the amazing Peggy Lee, Victor Borge and the legend that was Sammy Davis Jnr. Such class acts made this a wonderful escape from a troubled 21st century. Singing along with Danny Kaye made me smile so much. Bless all these entertainers, as we shall never see the like again. x
Thanks so much for this. I was four years old when this was broadcast and whilst I don’t remember this RVP, I do remember some from later in the 80s. These were the days when we still had real stars with real talent and the VRP and CRVP were worth watching. True variety and not just a bunch of half talented singers and dancers (and nothing else) thrown together by Simon Cowell et al and called ‘variety’. The modern shows truly are an insult to the term and to true performers like these (as well as the audience)
I’ve shared this video with my son in Canada ,don’t suppose there will be many faces he knows as he was born in 1971 and probably in bed when it was aired first…I remember it well and the queen mother looked so lovely.
I saw the great Peggy Lee a couple of days later , again at the Palladium, and she was wonderful. So nice to see Sammy Davis Jr being so respectful to Miss Lee when he introduced her. I was only 30 then....now 75, so special memories for me. Still loving Peggy of course, always my favourite.
What a great RVP this was, so many wonderful, unforgettable performers, maybe a lot better than most years perhaps due to the Queen mother celebrating her 80th birthday. What tickled me with one of the acts was Harry Worth at 1:02.04 who is absolutely great here along with his very polite ventriloquist dummies, I always remember him in his great comedy series. This sketch he had really made me laugh with his rapore between the two dummies, especially when little dummy Clarence says "yaaas" at 1:09.08 and the other after saying "is he taking the p " Talk about a more gentle age of comedy, how good was this, just brilliant !
I was outside the Palladium as a 22yo , watching Larry Hagman get into a car but I am gutted I never managed to see the legend Danny Kaye. God bless them all , the days when the real talent existed.
Wow!! So much talent on one stage....Lillian Gish, Danny Kaye, Sammy Davis Junior, Mary Martin..fantastic. Legendary entertainers. Thank you for sharing this wonderful gem❤
27:04 Paul Squire got his big break here & it led to shows on ITV & BBC1 before he vanished from Television in 1983 - depending on who you believe, he either became disillusioned with TV or had fallen out with both channels. Sadly we'll never know as he passed away in 2019.
Watching it on what would have been Sammy Davis Jr's 99th birthday - December 8th 2024. Saw him live at the Palladium when my parents took me. I must have been about 10 or 11 around 1960.

Brilliant. ⭐️ Many old faces now gone but not forgotten.
I was 8 years old 😂
Absolutely wonderful from the days we had real talent. Harry Worth and Victor Borge are outstanding.
The days of when there was something to aspire to...
Real talent, real music, no artificial inteligence …and Peggy Lee❤

Anna Neagle was 76 and looked amazing. Her figure was that of a 19 year old!
A wonderful time when you never needed to hear those famous words "please make sure your phones are on silent". 😂😂😂😂
Larry Hagman forgetting his lyrics from 2:07:50.
Everyone was so old here, only rowan Atkinson was youngish! sooo different from now !!
WOUNDERFULL

You can always count on mum to save you can’t you Larry 🙄
Never understood what Arthur Askey's talent was, and I still don't.
Maybe similar to a lot of today's so called entertainers
Share what you've got do they ever don't make me laugh they need to be taught a lesson in humility
Sorry, that doesn't actually make sense, could you try that again, please?
What the Hell are you talking about? Take more water with it next time.
@stephenguppy7882 Read back over what you wrote, it literally doesn't make sense, I was just trying to help, bless you precious gorgeousness!
@@markbrown6978 You are so incredibly patronising and of course you get the reference. Blocked and muted.
As you won't read this I can be honest, I love you.
Fantastically dated
😂😂Thanks for posting, it's so funny to watch such a load of crap.
Grim times when people were easily entertained!
No thats now, now we have no laughs sit coms, quotas and tick box dramas and shite music.
Woke off.

Wow. This is spectacular. And the fabulous Cleo Laine, too!
Awful.
How things have changed in 44 years. Seems like another planet.
