Good video! Some things to note though
-Most swirl flap blanks (atleast the ones sold around here) are a bit undersized, relying on the o-ring having to take up more slack than it should, which leads to the o-rings failing after a while, resulting in a boost leak. Some people add sealant on there, how good of an idea that is is up for debate. Unscrewing the flap itself from the shaft of the flap is another option (slightly different than what was done on the car in the video at the start, where the shafts were cut completely), that leaves oem quality seal. However warrants you leave the actuator shaft in place, so it prevents the flap shafts from coming out. Personally I opted for the more expensive blanks plus sealant after the first set of blanks failed as I mentioned. Either way you should keep an eye on whether the blanks have not become leaky after a while. That would be indicated with oil spray around the area.
-Must make sure all of the seals with metal washers are in place. The ones that go between the manifold and the M7 studs especially. You can see one is missing in the video, maybe he put it back on, or maybe it was lost. It wasn't mentioned. Either way they must all be there, otherwise as you tighten it up, it will crook over and likely not seal properly.
-You can leave the vacuum solenoid for the flaps in place, just loop it's inlet/outlet together with a bit of hose to prevent dirt getting in. That way you don't have a dangling connector and don't have to code it out to get rid of errors. Blank off the vacuum line that went to the flap valve close to the vacuum splitter. A bolt with smooth part of shaft will work. A bolt with full thread can leave a spiral path along the thread and cause a leak.
-While you have the manifold off, it would be a good idea to replace the 3mm (OEM uses 3.5x2 hose; 3mm and 3.2mm work fine) vacuum lines that go to the vacuum splitter under it. Especially if the vacuum hoses look like in the video, and even more if you have a car with vacuum actuated turbo. 5-6m of hose is enough to do all of them and it doesn't take long when you already have everything off.

Jet thanks for the additional info regarding the sealant aswell as the O ring, and on that note, do you reckon PTFE tape might work to make the blanks a bit bigger in diameter instead of Sealant, if the blanks are a bit pissy in the holes? then putting the O rings over the tape? Also, do you recommend using Bimmer Tool for diagnostics on a 120d M47N2 e87 2007??

    • @skyperis
      @skyperis 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@markhorridge7104 I would not use PTFE tape on there, it might help a little bit, but overall this is not really it's purpose and it might aswell just tear apart.
Following up my previous comment, the 'more expensive' blanks seem to have failed since aswell. Maybe gooping them up in RTV to silly levels would improve the situation, but at this point I think aftermarket blanks are just a waste of time, as I've tried two different sets and both have failed in a fairly short term. Replacing the inlet manifold with one that had no flaps and therefore no holes to plug is the best way. That can be done on E46, not sure about 120d. Other than that I'd try using the OEM flaps just with removed flap from the shaft. The OEM swirl flap bodies seem to be of much better quality.
You can get a diagnostics cable for 15eur from the usual suspects and run INPA/NCSExpert. I use that, maybe other tools are better, maybe worse, I cannot say as I've not used them really.,

Done mine last year, and wish I could put up pic on the comments section, took a photo as one of the flaps/spindles was hanging on the edge of the intake ports, the carbon build up saved the engine, could have dropped in at any time!

I recently had my BMW E84 N47 motor rebuilt. Now my car sometimes goes into limp mode (CC-ID-29). What are the possible reasons for that? It does not happen consistently. It happened 3 times since I got my car back from the shop. It happened once when I was accelerating from 80km/h to 90 or so. The second time it happened in pretty much the same conditions. But the third time it was idling in P gear. First two times it went away when I slowed down and pulled over. The third time the yellow check engine light stayed lit and it went away after I stopped and restarted the car.
I do not have a OBD2 scanner at the moment, that's why I'm asking this.
Any idea why it happens? :'(

I'm just a little confused why would you delete the flaps and not just ultrasound clean the manifold? The flaps were designed to improve the efficiency of the engine, with the flaps the pressures in the engine work for the benefit of the intake, by removing the flaps you are making your engine consume more fuel, produce less power and increasing the soot production, which is the most common problem that leads to most diesel engines dying. I understand doing this when you have the need for more air intake (if engine is modded with bigger intercooler, turbo, injectors and or chip tune) but if your engine is stock and you're just doing maintenance, don't delete the flaps just clean the manifold and you're set, save yourself from issues down the road.

I agree, I’m not a fan of removing swirl flaps but on an old manifold it’s a must.. A new manifold is the best solution

One question: with what product you clean/wash the material (manifold)?
My (e46, m47. Is a 320d sedan from 1999. Bough new. Now with 330.000kms) still have the egr... Last weekend I check the dirt inside, but it has less than that one on video.
Do you recomend to remove it? I also head that then it will increase on low rpm (bellow 2.000), it's true?

      - what product you use to clean the manifold? (My still have the egr and is almost like that one)
      - is it true that with the egr we have a bit more torque/power on low rpm? (Like 1500-1800)
