Because this one tells the story of the amazing inspiring engineer and pilot Mike Patey! See full description...
Where do I start to describe Mike Patey? There's just so much to tell about him, like you'll see in this episode. But to give it a go: he's probably best-known for the speed record braking Pratt & Whitney PT6 powered Lancair Legacy rocket for an airplane called 'Turbulence', the heavily modified and insane popular Wilga called 'Draco' and scratch-built Carbon Cub like bush plane called 'Scrappy'!
I had the privilege to have a chat with Mike via a Zoom call, to talk about his history, background, love for engineering and aviation and (of course) some of his incredible airplanes! Oh, and about a couple of inside scoops, but don't tell anyone else... ;)

@@ForFunFlyer at the time the first Scrappy episode came out, Mike did more work in that 20min video than i had done all year. The man is an inspiration, i cried when i saw the wreckage of Draco, half from seeing he and his wife were ok half from seeing the loss of such a fine piece of art.

What an absolute inspiration to us all, and what a great interview. I'm glad he has his own company and is able to pursue his passion. One of my favorite Draco videos is where he explores what attitude he needed to put the plane in so that he could link up with those wing suit guys. For anyone who has tried to build something, the guy's a national treasure.

OUTSTANDING EPISODE!!!! I have been a fan of Mike's since Draco project began and was fortunate enough to meet him at EAA Oshkosh 2x. Just got word today that EAA 2020 has been Cancelled, very sad as we live only 90 miles away and go every year. I have clicked Subscribe for your channel too.

@@ForFunFlyer Thanks for the interview. A lot of questions were answered. I'm a mechanical engineer by degree and profession. Although Mike never completed a degree he was "non matriculated" (education for sake of knowledge not degree). Mike is definitely a designer, engineer, fabricator extraordinaire. If I was a University Dean I'd award Mike an honorary degree. Mike does not care about paper diplomas, it's about the creation.
That's what I like about him; it's all about the result and how to get there safe and fast 💪🏻 Degrees are nice, but IMHO not that important. The greatest artists in history are self-taught geniuses, right? 😉
@@ForFunFlyer Let's put it this way regular smart people can get closer to genius and accomplish great things with formal education. Einstein was weak with math for a PhD Physicist, but he was a genius at theoretical thought experiments. He almost didn't discover theory of relativity due to a math error. What separates people like Mike who is a "Renaissance Man" is a thirst and curiosity to always learn and perseverance, tenacity, drive, focus.... "Back to Work."
