I think a big thing that was missed in the photo discussion is whether the photo is still an accurate representation of the moment. If your kids are being demons and it's impossible to take a picture of them all looking at the camera it's a bit weird that in a few seconds you can have that picture and post it to the internet. It's another way in which the "social media world" makes things seem nicer than they actually are. It can reinforce the feeling for people that other people have a better life than them cause their kids actually look at the camera and behave.
Also when taking large group photos it's impossible to get everyone with their eyes open/smiling properly so it's common to edit a few takes together so everyone's looking their best Like Adam said, I'd rather they do this than the weird AI manipulation from Google IO Not sure why this bit was such a philosophical issue for them lol
There's a difference between "all kids are being demons" and "the variables of multiple people (especially kids) increase for a single frame" If all your kids are going nuts this feature isn't going to do anything since it needs a good picture from that moment to replace. It's there for moments where a kid blinks, or a bug flies in someone's face, or someone sneezes. Small accidental moments. Also Google always lets you save a copy of edits, so this feature doesn't even mean you have to delete the silly ones. Just gives you the opportunity to stitch a photo together. Wedding photographers who take family photos do this all the time. It's just hard when you have multiple subjects
I think a good question to ask about the whole face swap thing is: Are you trying to capture a moment that happened, or are you trying to capture a memory as you remember it? It's fundamentally the same problem I had growing up with family photos! Why are we taking photos where everyone lines up and smiles instead of taking photos of actual moments as they happened? This strikes me as the digital version of doing that, just easier.
The paper clip and floppy disk thing about how kids these days don't know what they are reminded me of this article I published in my Ph.D. where we interviewed college students and ask them to identify the objects in computer icons. One of the kids "identified" the floppy disk as a fridge! When we asked him why he thinks it's a fridge, he said "well, that's where you save things!" lol
128 GB Quest 2 is $299USD now, which is an upgrade from the 64GB version for $299 at launch. Quest Pro's remaining advantages are the internally tracking controllers (tracks accurately regardless of occlusion), 12GB RAM and eye tracking. Eye tracking is the major one in terms of spatial computing and the future of VR interfaces. The double tap passthrough feature has been available on the Quest 2 for years now as a safety and convenience option, so I don't think the feature itself is a response to Apple. Although the new animation on the Quest 3 might have been Apple "inspired".
Thanks! Someone to correct all the biased opinions on VR and MR. Big difference between what the quest pro can do and what the quest 3 will. Also I have never felt any latency on the passthrough of the quest 2. Just a bit of latency will be enough to get you dizzy.
The photo face swap thing is an interesting topic- personally I think its fine if its sampling from the same moment, because it makes a photo closer to our memory of the moment, which is ultimately what we want to capture is how the moment felt. We remember smiling and laughing and everyone enjoying, we don't remember than 1ms moment where John was smiling, Ted was picking something from his teeth, Emily was mid-sneeze... we want the moment where everything and everyone was at their best and how we actually reflect on that experience. The little nuances might get lost, but what are you doing with a family photo? Are you trying to make a documentary of that exact moment, or capture a memory of how it felt to be there?
Thank you! Also based on Google's history of photo editing, it'll most likely save as a copy after so I'm guessing you'll still have the burst of photos and ALSO get the stitched one!
No 15 here, but during the beta testing for 17, on both the 13 Pro Max and iPad Pro 11, there would be random times during general use the device would jump to around 100F or more then after a few minutes drop back to normal. Never have identified why and why I suspect it is a software issue. I have not seen this under iOS15 or iOS16. I also noticed that the high temps consumed more battery.
My name is Victor, so I was doing some laundry, and I had my phone to the side listening to the podcast, and all of a sudden, Marques said "Victor" and I was so spooked. I just responded, "Yeah?" 😂
Why? They are usually uninformed. Every time you just notice that since they are not interested in the technology they are super biased in the whole topic. Pro and quest 3 have the big difference of eye and face tracking, as well for tracking cameras in the controllers. Quest pro was never intended as a gaming headset much like the apple vision pro.
21:38 but if the frame of the device gets dented and that dent pushes into the glass, glass doesn't bend especially not when the frame hits it square on its edge.
7:30 I wonder if having each of the audio tracks from each podcast host run through AI translation independently could preserve the overlapping and back-and-forth in a way that trying to only translate the final combined audio track couldn't do
I remember when Apple killed iTunes by separating it into separate apps (music, books, podcasts, etc.) and I found it actually to be successful. iTunes at that point had been so muddled by everything it was trying to do, so that separation actually helped streamline audio content for Apple and makes it so much better and clean.
Andrew, I'm totally with you in regards to the group pictures. It is really not that different from HDR pictures, just instead of combining exposures you're combining poses from the same moment. Definitely not a problem, and rather a great feature. And if you have a issue with that, then don't use it, solved! And, for the record, I love film photography. They are just almost different media at this point... Both being pictures anyway, one digital and the other analogue 🤷♂️
Google dropping podcasts makes me seriously consider going back to iPhones. Podcasts is the only app with a painless way to at least stream on a computer and maintain your play history. YT Music is really annoying since when I sub an artist their music videos start showing up in my TH-cam feed. Google seems to consider this a "feature". I'm definitely a fan of single purpose apps.

@zaqstvnsn4633 Meta's core business is learning every moment of your life, including figuring out who you know. I've had some creepy suggestions for people you may know. That is less true with the other companies you mentioned. Google does some of what Meta does for it's business, but nowhere with nowhere near the same detail and personally identifying info. Microsoft and Amazon are even further from that, ie you are not their primary product.
22:15 It's great when people use specialized tools to test things but I need to also know how the scale from those tools equate to my everyday life. If I do then how relelvant is the Mohs scale in the first place? If im just going to baby my phone.
I'm a new iPhone user. Using a brand new apple account, my iPhone 15 Pro Max is getting insane battery. Like 5 hours screen on time and not getting lower than 50% battery. Pretty impressed. Maybe it's something with older accounts giving permissions to specific apps or services?
The issue with the cracked back glass is that the glass is no longer bonded to the hardware, the QI coil is bonded to the glass and now there is a slight gap between the back of the QI coil and the mid frame, so if you put your thumbs right where Zach put his and push really hard you will be able to flex the glass enough to break it.
Face swap is highlighting the point that photos are really art as much as moments. The only person who will know the face swap will be the photo editor. Therefore, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder"
I guess the line is, what the software is fixing. When you guys talked about HDR, it was just fixing the camera sensors inability to see diffrent exposures at the same time. It fixes the lack of dynamic range in the sensor which your eye can actually see all of the details in the scene at diffrent brightness levels. Or in film Photography example. While editing the colors, you are just fixing the physical limitations in the scanner or the chemichal process. But when you edit out someone in the bacground or swap a face, you are fixing the real life. You are changing the moment.
I think the reason the 15 pro is breaking is due to a slight gap between the frame and the back panel. If you pay attention, you see Jerrys finger leave an impression where he pressed. This might be because of the new "repairable" design. The glass is supported around the edges but theres space in the middle . Hello to the WVFRM Podcast crew! The pixel fold sort of had something like the iPhone 15 overheating thing for a little while. I'm not sure which update fixed it but I haven't had that issue with my fold for a while. Assuming the iPhone 15 issue will be fixed with some sort of update?
From my humble experience, I believe that the heat is a result of operations carried out by the device in the first weeks of use, after which performance stabilizes when the system determines the user’s usage priorities. (The system learns from the way you use it).
Sam Kohl's video was a COMPARISON video though - I understand wanting to dismiss the result by saying it was the 14th drop and from an insane height, but the point of the video was doing the same tests to both the 14 Pro & 15 Pro to compare any differences. And the 14 Pro did super well, it was fully functional at the end compared to the non-functional wreckage of the 15 Pro. So there seems to be a big drop in durability compared to last year
Not saying the results are pointless, it makes sense as a comparison. But the photo is being used by itself a lot as an example of the iPhone being fragile without that context.
Hey Andrew - yeah I agree with you about the photo, you're right to call out the social media trolls who are sharing it without context. When the topic of Sam's video came up, I just wish you'd mentioned how the 14 Pro result contrasted with the 15 Pro, so that Marques, David (& any podcast listeners who haven't seen Sam's video) get the full picture.
Wasn't expecting a mention of what I can only assume is the Solomon Pond Mall, but hey great place, only mall in the state I've been able to find a Cinnabon
Although my first language is Spanish it is so weird to listen Markes talking in Spanish in another voice, so I rather keep hearing in the original version.
My battery longevity on iPhone 13 Pro Max dropped noticeably after upgrade to iOS 17. Moreover, upgrading an old Apple Watch (gen 5) to watchOS 10 has _really_ reduced battery life - I get below 20% 2-3 hours earlier than before the upgrade.
Surface Laptop Studio is nice on outside but a nightmare to get inside, the most memorable stuff from those review videos are the repairability of that laptop, the glue is so thick like it's a one way disassembly operation.
Here for the double David
