@@matthewdunham1689 I still remember when the very first Hulk TV movie scared my sister to death. She hid behind the couch when he was transforming. I don't remember being scared even then, which is weird because I was scared of basically all monster movies at that point. I probably was though.
I certainly did! I missed the second part the first time around because I had a Cub Scout meeting that night. I got to it in reruns later that summer. I couldn't wait!
Alway's remembered this ep as a kid. And the one where they trapped the Hulk in the round container. Frye's hulk was very scary as a kid indeed. And he looked similar to the monster in an episode of Battle of the Planets where they fight a giant mummy and after the mummy's wrapping is destroyed reveals a scary monster
The two-part episodes of Hulk were always the best. Like this one, and the one where Banner is stuck between Hulk, and Banner after being exposed to the meteor.
Del Frye's Hulk was not as muscular as Banner's Hulk, of course, but Frye's Hulk was still super strong and taller (creepy, mean and eerie as well). Del Frye's Hulk transformation sound was eerie, also.
I always wondered why he wasn't as muscular as the Banner Hulk when I was a kid, but I think the answer may be in the pilot for the show. When Banner and Dr. Marks are investigating the cases of people that develop superhuman strength in stressful situations, and they find there's a genetic material in the mitochondrial DNA of all the people in the study. Banner laments that he must not have any of this in his system because he was unable to lift the car to save his wife a year earlier. Marks posits that unless they check they'll never know and after checking, they find that Banner actually has more of that material in his DNA that just about they've examined thus far. It's just there was a correlation to that material and also sun spot activity giving off Gamma Rays that sort of jumpstarted those strength events. My guess is that Frye just didn't have as much of the material in his genes and wasn't as strong as a result. We see him smack Banner's Hulk around a bit at first there, but the Hulk is rather calm all things considered (the stress of the cure being lost turning him) but when he gets truly angry, Frye can't really budge him.
Here's an interesting trivia fact for you. In 1968, Dick Durock was an alien security guard in Star Trek Season 3 Episode 13 Elaan of Troyius. You can see him in one scene guarding her quarters & he looked really huge.
Dell Frye = (Toho's) Frankenstein (in terms of body language, appearance (somewhat). The difference was that 1965 Frankenstein was misunderstood yet mostly hated (just like our Hulk) whereas the Dell Frye Hulk was evil yet tragic - Frye's hometown and how they treated him made him evil).
This was my favorite episode(s) in the series. The drama in the story was chilling, and I loved the twist when David discovers he is talking to an ex-Hulk! Also the acting was amazing when Frye tells Banner that he has kept the equipment safe all these years waiting. "I've been waiting for YOU!"
This episode had my favorite Hulk-Out of the series - the last one of part 2 which was one of the few of the series that triggered from adrenalin instead of just pain. The Frye creature throws the vial containing the cure, the vial breaks, and we see Banner's eyes. It's almost a full 2 minutes before we see the Hulk full, and, in a masterpiece of acting, Banner breaks into tears - utterly horrified that he's lost his last chance for a cure. Then, the Hulk emerges - who ALSO has tears in his eyes - and, for the first time in the series encounters someone who looks just like him. Hulk isn't angry in this scene - he's just curious. Then, this other Hulk starts whaling on the Banner Hulk, for no reason as far as our Hulk is concerned! It takes several minutes for Hulk to get angry enough to really start fighting back. It's a glorious scene. The one problem I always had is emphasized in part 2 when the two Hulks finally meet. Lou always had such an incredible physique, and Dick Durock really had only his size working for him. He may be taller than Lou, but he's not as muscular, and it shows. So does his lower back where they didn't quite get the green makeup on him. He doesn't even burst out of his clothing like Lou does!! Of course, this episode had a ton of references to the Universal Horrors. Dr. Clive and Del Frye are the obvious ones. The town where the episode takes place is Vissaria -- Visaria (one "s" only) was where the early Universal Frankenstein films took place (except when they called it Vasaria in one film, Frankenstein in another, and, well, didn't actually mention the town's name in the first). And Lola Albright's character is named Elizabeth (Henry Frankenstein's fiancée and later wife in Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein). Someone was really paying attention to Universal's own legacy when they made this episode. Gotta give them credit.
This is also my favorite Hulk out of the series. It's just so sad! My second favorite Hulk out is when Dell changes in the store room closet. His smile as he looks directly into the camera is legitimately terrifying and oh so awesome.
Well, if both Hulks had been squat and muscle-bound, we wouldn't have been able to tell them apart as they tangled with each other. I do wish, though, that Hulk had encountered some more "super" characters and creatures. The show tried to make Hulk more grounded, it's clear. BTW, I suppose the characters' names pulled from the old Frankenstein film is to reference that the Hulk was based on that monster.
Frye’s creature may look corny today. However, the idea of someone changing into another Hulk and smiling was VERY scary as a kid. HA. Frye’s creature gave me nightmares. This is by far the best episode of the series. For the first time, the Hulk found his equal as an opponent.
Actually, I think the later seasons of The Incredible Hulk have better special effects than a lot of modern CGI. Dick Durok's portrayal of Frey's Hulk still looks plenty creepy to me. Of course, The Incredible Hulk worked so well mainly because producer Kenneth Johnson and the cast all treated the subject matter seriously, and not as a joke. Much as I loved Adam West's Batman as a kid (and still have a soft spot for it), that campy, farcical take just wouldn't have served the Hulk well.
This was my favorite episode(s) in the series. The drama in the story was chilling, and I loved the twist when David discovers he is talking to an ex-Hulk! Also the acting was amazing when Frye tells Banner that he has kept the equipment safe all these years waiting. "I've been waiting for YOU!" As for Frye's smiling, it made total sense. Unlike David, Frye was Happy to (finally again) become a Hulk.
Another Frankenstein connection: The town of Vasaria is a nod to the town of the same that sometimes appeared in the later Universal Frankenstein films (also spelled as "Visaria").

It makes total sense that Frye's Hulk wasn't huge like Banner's. Del was critically ill when he was originally turned into the creature. Man, who'd thought lou ferrigno hulk was literally fighting DC Swamp thing, a green super powered individual. I didn't realize till now that dick durrock was the OG SWAMP THING, I remember watching several episodes of that TV series and possibly the movie as well. For a 90s story about a powered up character it was good for the time period.
There was actually an Incredible Hulk episode where he goes to an archeological dig and finds out that other Hulks may have existed in stone age periods as well. This was technically not the first Hulk really. It was titled Kindred Spirits and was in season 2 episode 19.
I've had a previous idea for the first Hulk creature as The Abomination of a elaborate crossover with the Six Million Dollar Man, Knight Rider and The Incredible Hulk. with Dean Stockwell as Emil Blonsky using film footage from The Dunwich Horror from 1970.
First time I watched the episode was in the early Eighties when The Incredible Hulk aired on Friday nights at 8PM. I literally hid in my father's lap when I saw the evil Hulk. He was " Incredibly " scary!
They actually have reintroduced Del Frye and the scientist as a father and son who effectively end up the same way in the recent “Immortal Hulk” run (which is the best Hulk run I’ve read since the 90s)!
You forgot to mention that Del Frye did appear in the Immortal Hulk comics where they are two different versions of him as a glowing green skeleton and yes he was the closest thing we got to a supervillain in this series because I didn’t how hard would it be to bring in the Leader since he is just a green man with a giant brain and moustache but as I said time and time again about Frankenstitching on Devientart.
I remember reading about that Immortal Hulk appearance , but I don't think I have that one in my comics yet. Most of my Hulks are from the 70's to the early 2000's in readable condition at least. I think they really wanted to keep the show grounded in reality. They didn't want to go with supervillains which probably would have been hard to do right in those days. It would have been fun to see what they could have done with the Leader or the Rhino or the Abomination.
@@tvcrazyman They did. Kenneth Johnson mentioned in one of his commentaries that Stan Lee wanted the Hulk to face a couple of giant robot dogs, and Kenny had to patiently explain that he wanted the series to be grounded, without including battles with strange comic book monsters. This is really the only one where he encounters a second gamma creature, and only in Prometheus (also from this season) does the series really touch on more science fictional elements.
@@tvcrazyman Also, they didn't have huge budgets for TV shows then, so costumes, makeup and other things needed for supervillains would have added to the price tag. Hell, the show ended up getting cancelled, not because of ratings, but because it was too expensive to make (as the show had a lot of outdoor shots).
This was a well thought out, informative video on one of my favorite TV series as a child."The First" two-parter episode is easily one of my favorites. Thanks for researching and sharing the trivia about it.👍
They should have done a team up with the Six Million Dollar Man, Wonder Woman and the Incredible Hulk vs a evil Bigfoot, this evil Hulk controlled by aliens of course trying to take over the world. A 3 parter spanning all 3 shows. That'd have been cool 🤣❤️😃
Lou Ferrigno's creature vs Dick Durock's creature? No contest. Frye's e creature was a wimp by comparison. He wasn't as muscular as Big Louie was, and when Frye transformed, his clothes didn't rip the way David Banner's did, plus he was always throwing his arms back. Who was he trying to scare anyway?
What got me was how David was curious and actually got closer when he saw Dell Frye hulk out. If it had been me, I would have made a break for the door so fast I'd bust out of my socks.
Rewatching this made me realize that Dell Frye's hulk seemed to be the antithesis to Banner's hulk in a number of ways. Frye's hulk was malicious, where Banner's hulk was benevolent. Banner's hulk would lean forward and flex, whereas, Frye's hulk would rare back and flail his arms. Frye's was taller in height, Banner's hulk was shorter. *Some have criticized Frye's hulk for lack of musculature. Banner's hulk was clearly younger, and more muscular. Dell Frye was probably well into in his late 60s or into his 70s, so I feel that it could be reasoned that this was simply an older hulk. Ultimately, this episode was by far the scariest thing I'd ever seen on a TV screen or on film. Just hearing the sound of the solar panels opening up made my stomach hurt. It was a masterful episode.
Frye was definitely a scary hulk even without the muscles. I kind of think that maybe the physical shape of the hulk had something to do with the mental state of the person turning into the hulk as well.
@tvcrazyman as David explains in part 2 of the episode, "[Dell Frye] is very dangerous. The creature that Dell becomes is guided by his personality. And Dell Frye is a murderer." So you are 100% correct. It's one thing to have a hulk on your hands. But to have a hulk who originates from an angry, troubled man such as Dell Frye is something else entirely. That being said, I'd be terrified to be anywhere near Frye's hulk!!
I've just spent the last two months watching the original 'The Fugitive' series. It's brilliant. The Incredible Hulk show took a lot of ideas from that. Dr. Banner is a descendant of Dr. Kimball, and Dr. Kimball is a descendant of Jean Valjean. And I think Harry Townes must have played more supporting characters in that show than anybody else.
What's interesting about the climax scene where Hulk meets Hulk was that Dick Durock literally towered over Lou Ferrigno. I don't know if that was intentional or that was more like reality.
And actually Harry Townes was average height but Dick Durock was definitely taller than Lou Ferrigno. But didn't have the muscle mass Lou had. The 2 worked well together though. Lou didn't have the ego and was said to be a sweetheart.
In the episode Dick Durock's Hulk looks about 4 inches taller than Lou Ferrigno's Hulk while in reality Durock was only one inch taller than Ferrigno (6'6" vs 6'5")
I remember this hulk. I always felt that the hulk in this show was extremely under powered and it was unintentionally funny when the hulk did something and everyone looked on in wonder and shock.
I remember as a kid, only watching the end part, the big confrontation, and was wondering why the other hulk monster was being so mean but new that the good Incredible Hulk would will win the day!
I definitely watch it….I was 8 years old and LOVED (still my favorite Marvel character) The Hulk show…..but I wasn’t ready for this one…..my 8 year old mind freaked out when I saw that skinny Hulk….LOL….I had nightmares because of that…..(side note)….as a little kid who was smaller than a lot of the other kids I connected to Hulk as a “Bully Buster” if you pick on me….I will become bigger and stronger than you…..you don’t want to see me when I’m angry…..LOL…nice guy turns into a rage monster when picked on…..I loved that as a kid 😊
I thought it was because they couldn't FIND another guy as tall and jacked as Lou. At 6ft5 230 lbs Lou was pretty rare back then. Dirk was 6ft6 but looked much taller than Lou in their stare down.
love love love these episodes. as for criticism, I would add that there wasn't enough of an impact from this story. Meaning McGee didn't get any closer to finding out David Banner was still alive. I will always wonder if the show reached that point, maybe CBS would have allowed KJ to finish the show. The First would have been a great place for McGee to find out that John Doe was Bruce Banner.
Whoa. I'm from Huntsville and didn't know about this episode until today. Been doing a deep dive on it for the last couple of hours only to just know find out that Harry Townes is from here. I used to be Episcopalian too. I wonder if he went to Nativity.
I have always wondered, why didn't Banner make peace with the Hulk and have a Hulk that uses Banner's intellect to solve problems and have more awesome adventures.
Just a technicality but Frye was actually the 2nd known Hulk in the series, Banner being the 3rd. The real 1st was back in prehistoric times, his remains being found in a cave by archaeologists
Technically, according to the rest of the series, David is the third green gamma creature chronologically. Let’s not forget the caveman creature. I say creature, rather than Hulk, because “Hulk” is technically the name/reference term for David’s creature. It was originally a metaphorical reference by McGee in the Pilot.
i recently tried to google this episode to see if i was remembering it correctly in that there was an episode with another hulk in it and david gave him the only cure . i couldn't find any info on it , so i was so very happy to see your video. i guess i remembered it wrong as i thought the other hulk got cured . oh well at least i know now

@@tvcrazyman or Xemnu the living Hulk
@@tvcrazyman Also, they didn't have huge budgets for TV shows then, so costumes, makeup and other things needed for supervillains would have added to the price tag.
Hell, the show ended up getting cancelled, not because of ratings, but because it was too expensive to make (as the show had a lot of outdoor shots).
The Kingpin is a villain in one of the tv movies
Man, if I was that first Hulk, I'd be mad I didn't get the cool muscles that Ferrigno had.
I was petrified of this episode as a kid
I remember watching this episode. In fact, I watched this a millions of times!
I love this show growing up don’t make me angry. You won’t like me when I’m angry.😮😂
This is one of my favorite episodes of this incredible show the showdown between both hulks
If there was ever a Incredible Hulk horror movie the first Hulk would be perfect.
when Banner realized the cure was destroyed and his anquish caused him to change, Bixby's acting moved me to tears. Still does.
I remember when I first saw del Frye change it scared the hell out of me ..I think I was11yes old?
I was 6, and it definitely messed with me.
This was a well thought out, informative video on one of my favorite TV series as a child."The First" two-parter episode is easily one of my favorites. Thanks for researching and sharing the trivia about it.👍
Thanks, I appreciate it.
That would have been amazing!
Dont forget to throw John Saxon's robot in the mix as well!💪🤖
I would have geeked out over that!
Funny story. For years I thought that the human form of the bad hulk was played Normal Fell…. Stanley Roper on threes company.
One of my favorite episodes ultimate showdown between both hulks
Lou Ferrigno's creature vs Dick Durock's creature? No contest. Frye's e creature was a wimp by comparison. He wasn't as muscular as Big Louie was, and when Frye transformed, his clothes didn't rip the way David Banner's did, plus he was always throwing his arms back. Who was he trying to scare anyway?
Missed this episode (cause I was a baby) but watched ALL of swamp thing including the tv show, Dick Durock ruled! Great vid!
Thanks
I watched TV Hulk as a kid but never saw this episode. Great video!
Thanks
So glad I got to meet Dick Durock 😊 RIP
I remember this like it was yesterday, i couldn't stop laughing how funny that first Hulk's form looks 🤣🤣
Ohh hell yeah…me too. I used to ask myself, how can a hulk not have muscular definition. 😆
@@MockeryManor 🤣🤣😭😭
That was just Florida Man on some bad bath salts.
Scared me big time back in the day! Old man hulk still kinda creeps me out! 😂
I remember my brothers and I laughing our butts off at this second hulk when we were kids, because he was so... built differently.
I remember this hulk. I always felt that the hulk in this show was extremely under powered and it was unintentionally funny when the hulk did something and everyone looked on in wonder and shock.
In the episode, The First, imagine the look on David s face when he sees someone else transform into a Hulk.
Dick Durock had a guest appearance on Star Trek episode, Elaan of Troyius.
"The Dohlman has said I will be whipped to death if I let Captain Kirk through that door."
He was also one of the bad guys in one of Clint Eastwood's Dirty Harry movies,it was "The Enforcer"
This and Steve Austin vs.
Bigfoot are the two most epic things I remember geeking out over as a little kid.
The HULK show has some seriously tense moments & great acting
I remember him fondly. ❤️
Glad i found your post of this 1st hulk. Never knew about this one i mean ur youtube channel deal
That was my Favorite episode of the series. Hulk vs Hulk.
They didn't want to use another muscular guy cause they didn't want competition or comparison to Lou.
I thought it was because they couldn't FIND another guy as tall and jacked as Lou.
At 6ft5 230 lbs Lou was pretty rare back then.
Dirk was 6ft6 but looked much taller than Lou in their stare down.
The thinner you are the taller you look.
love love love these episodes. as for criticism, I would add that there wasn't enough of an impact from this story. Meaning McGee didn't get any closer to finding out David Banner was still alive. I will always wonder if the show reached that point, maybe CBS would have allowed KJ to finish the show. The First would have been a great place for McGee to find out that John Doe was Bruce Banner.
Who knew that the first Hulk was Chuck Connors?🤣
I watched it back then, but it was more like a creature feature horrormovie.
Far more ARRRRRGGGGHH !
Than the tame Avenger of today.
I watched it a couple of times as a kid and as an adult. I'm from Birmingham, didn't know he was from Huntsville. Cool.
My favorite part of the whole series…
When i was a kid in maybe 2003 i remember i emailed Dick Duroc who played as Swamp thing and the Evil hulk Ofcourse. He responded too. It was cool.
Sehr interessante Informationen und ein schönen Gruß aus Germany 🇩🇪🇩🇪🇩🇪🇩🇪
I love your channel brother keep up the fantastic work
Thanks 😀
When the old show of the Hulk dealt with the struggles and agony of the Hulk better than anything the MCU has ever done...wow
True. However, the TV show had 4 full seasons and a partial 5th season to more fully explore of the characters of both Banner and Hulk.
@@MrMedictom Yeah, but it's done better in a couple of episodes like this one.
It was weird watching the hulk fighting grandpa hulk.
Thanks for this video! 🙂
Whoa. I'm from Huntsville and didn't know about this episode until today. Been doing a deep dive on it for the last couple of hours only to just know find out that Harry Townes is from here. I used to be Episcopalian too. I wonder if he went to Nativity.
Best Hulk ever! We were 11 at the time
I have always wondered, why didn't Banner make peace with the Hulk and have a Hulk that uses Banner's intellect to solve problems and have more awesome adventures.
Nice work man
Just a technicality but Frye was actually the 2nd known Hulk in the series, Banner being the 3rd.
The real 1st was back in prehistoric times, his remains being found in a cave by archaeologists
I love the lonely man Hulk. Its the best version and straddles the line for man or monster.
thanks 4 all the stuff i didnt know!!
My pet peeve with this show was his name being changed to David from Bruce
Brilliant video. 👍 I’d be more than happy to post a preview of your graphic novel on my site
I remember seeing this episode !
i recently tried to google this episode to see if i was remembering it correctly in that there was an episode with another hulk in it and david gave him the only cure . i couldn't find any info on it , so i was so very happy to see your video. i guess i remembered it wrong as i thought the other hulk got cured . oh well at least i know now
That is one freaky-looking monster!
This is my favorite episode n the one the Hulk fights Thor too lol 😆 😂 🤣 😅😎😎😎😎
The first Hulk missed gym day. 😅
Yes, but he was meaner as hell.
Wow that’s cool to no love the hulk & swamp thing , watching those on tv , as kid growing up
Que bueno sería volver a ver esta serie
Why do I feel like i'm sat in an episode of Beavis and Butthead listening to Mister van Driessen giving commentary.
This was my favorite episode; this was Fkn hard.
You should do a review of the 6 million dollar man "burning bright" with Captain Kirk (William shatner) that episode was a classic
