At the height of the Vietnam War, the US Military was deeply interested in implementing a new attack chopper that would pack a punch and pummel enemy ground forces in the dense jungles of Vietnam.
The military also aimed to use it as a support vehicle to escort Hueys carrying soldiers and Marines to battle.
The Sikorsky Company was already a renowned name in helicopter manufacturing, with the S-61, S-64, and S-65 models in production.
But over that prior decade, the company had lost competitions for the army utility helicopter (the UH-1), the army large utility helicopter (the CH-47 Chinook), and several other mission roles.
Their newest prototype, however, caught the attention of the Army. It was the S-67 -- a unique helicopter with tremendous capabilities for any kind of combat situation thanks to its slender fuselage and its astonishing amount of firepower.
It was the ideal chopper for winning the war in Vietnam, but sadly, it arrived too late to change the tide of the fight.
Only one Sikorsky S-67 was ever completed. It was America's first Blackhawk. (Technically the only Blackhawk before the name was changed to Black Hawk for the UH-60 to be used in a support and utility role.)

My dad was the principal cinematographer at Sikorsky Aircraft for decades, including the period when the S-67 was in development. I always enjoyed watching my dad's footage and occasionally witnessed him, his legs dangling from a chase ship, getting air-to-air coverage as they flew over my house, just a few miles from Sikorsky's Stratford Connecticut factory. The S-67 was my all-time favorite Sikorsky helo. Thank you for the great job creating this video. It brings back a ton of memories.

It wasn't initially a Military project, that's why. Sikorsky initially funded this solo. :)

Airwolf was my favorite show as a kid. Watching it as an adult was painful. The 80s were an odd time for tv shows.
I was thinking Blue Thunder myself.
Airwolf was the call sign of a pilot in the 57th ahc in pleku Vietnam 71 72. Who later was a pilot in Hollywood.
Always bothers me how people think that a new weapons system would have allowed the US to 'win' the Vietnam War. The US always had the upper hand in the sense of raw firepower available; instead the reasons for US defeat and withdrawal were political, the US war strategy was fatally flawed from the beginning and the whole conflict (starting with the French) was needless to begin with. I wish people would try to understand these factors better so they could learn from it when future conflicts arise instead of thinking "if we had an even bigger broomstick the war would've been won!"

The US won every battle they were involved in. Won the battles but lost the war. Reason is simple. You can't win a war without occupying the territory. I lesson politicians never learned.
The problem with this helicopter is that the army kept comparing it to the cobra and other focused attack helicopters. This helicopter would have succeeded as a support helicopter flying alongside cobras. The ability to move in troops while simultaneously supplying heavy support would have been a game changer.

sorry LOL, but I'll take this over any sluggish Cobra, this helicopter could have surpassed both the cobra and apaches, superior payload and speed plus external fuel tanks, 7,000 pounds of ordnance, plus airbrakes as a bonus 🤔 both the apaches and cobras had no chance, both replaced with a single helicopters, imagine this heli with the avionics and radar tech we have today, the Comanche was a good program too but they killed as well just like i believe they did with this one.

@@caferace8418 it looked considerably slimmer then a hind, I would wager that rear compartment was far from comfortable. having a hatch to drop off a SEAL team while still being a decent attack helo wouldn't have been a bad idea. Otherwise you'd need two birds out there, one far slower and more veunerable.

I was going to say, in its final iteration, the S-67 was pushing close to being a US "Hind."

A lot of stuff was canceled in the mid 1970s because they realize technology was going to jump a generation and it would be obsolete as soon as it reached service
@@jamesricker3997 This is false. We update electronics extremely easily. The platform does not go obselete; the electronics do. So we would just upgrade.

This is excellent footage of the s-67, very hard to find clips of these test flights. My dad worked for Sikorsky back then (that's him on the left 11:08) and was there at Farnborough that day flying chase. A sad end to a beautiful helicopter.

It seems so strange that a singular accident like that could scrap what appeared to be such a fantastic chassis. Performance was loved by pilots, extremely versatile, under budget, easy to produce and maintain. Was it not pilot error? Was there some sort of fatal design flaw that caused it? I have so many questions!
Some of the best helicopters that never came to be... S-67, AH-56, and RAH-66.
Ironically, in the FVL program today they are considering a helicopter that looks... you guessed it... almost identical to the RAH-66.

My grandad was an ambulance driver for the RAE Farnborough and he assisted in pulling the pilot from from the crash, he drove the pilot to the local hospital sadly the day my grandad was due to go and visit the pilot in hospital was the day he passed away I believe he passed away with Pneumonia.. It upset my grandad for the rest of his life that he didn't get to see him again

@@kurtcannon438 hi Kurt so sorry for your loss... I was only young when this tragic accident happened I actually saw it happen at the time, being so young I didn't realise how bad it was. All I remember from the conversation I had with my grandad that he was one of the first on the scene with some fire fighters. I know he assisted pulling your father from the crash and taking him to our local hospital my grandfather had received a message from your dad asking to meet his rescuers which was arranged but sadly they never got to meet again, as I say my grandad was deeply upset that your father had passed away and would often talk about it, I'm afraid he didn't go into detail as you can imagine. To be honest I think the trauma he got that day brought back a lot of WW11 memories.. Sorry I could give more but it was a long time ago.. Take care

one even looks like a chunkier version of this and it's predecessor, though that tilt rotor is looking really good. i think both should be used, 1 for speed and the other can do heavy lift/gunship and a smaller variant can be more mass produced and more widely used and it can take many elements from this design

@@jamesricker3997 Imo, they probably could have kept a relatively similar base design while including emerging technologies, plus it would have been one of the fastest attack helicopters available for its time.
@@lasagnakob9908 The Apache was far better though. Even if some of the systems that would be used on the Apache were implemented on the CH-56, I don't think it would have been as good. And remember, the CH-56 was a program that already was having technical difficulties.

The CH-56's capabilities and base statistics STILL out-perform even the current generation of the AH-64 and would have done so at a FRACTION of the cost. Speed alone...this thing was as fast in the prototype stage as the CURRENT Apache. It was a helicopter gunship that could fly like a fighter, the Apache gets scared when there are clouds in the sky (literally not a joke, Apache crews legitimately don't like flying in "inclimate weather" because their visibility is god-awful). It's wings could actually carry more ordinance than the 64, the ONLY advantage the 64 had is the large chin gun which...okay? the Cheyenne could still bust tanks with it's 20mm so, not super impressive. It was also smaller, less electronically and mechanically complex, and FAR cheaper than the AH-64. I also work next to Apache mechanics on a daily basis and the way that thing is put together is...frankly astonishing. There are some downright bonkers level stupid shit on that helicopter. Cheyenne was literally better in every conceivable way.
The ONLY reason the Cheyenne was dropped was because the Air Force got butthurt and wouldn't shut the fuck up. Literally a case of politics and in-fighting stomping all over the dick of progress.

The Longbow is an Apache helicopter, with an upgraded sensor and optics system. It isn't just the Longbow, it's the Apache Longbow.

American S-67 Blackhawk first flight August 1970. The very similar Russian MI-24 Hind first flight September 1969. One of the many times competing nations produced similar aviation products at about the same time. During the 1950's Korean war it was very difficult to tell the Russian and American swept wing jets apart.
I had the pleasure of being an armament/electrical systems tech fpr the AH-64 Apache... I saw what they can do to small and large targets. That bird is one hell of a machine!!! I never knew of the S-67. So thank you for this video and information!!!

The Army, arguably, should be operating the A-10. It's clear the USAF doesn't want it even though the Army needs it.

The S67 was superior in every way to the Cobra and Comanche. The Army passed on vastly superior aircraft because of politics and money changing hands. Nothing more. The USAF doesn't give a damn about helicopters. Army aviation/Air Cav is a completely different entity to anything the USAF views as being within the scope of its mission, i.e. no conflict of interest. The closest interaction between the two is the A10. The grunts on the ground love that air frame. The USAF pilots and JTACs love that air frame and the mission. The only ones who keep trying to cancel the A10 are politicians.
Actually yes, when an Army spotter aircraft engaged a North Vietnamese Mig in self defense the Air Force shit a brick and basically made sure the kill was not credited and the pilots not decorated as the Army was not "mandated or trained to engage in air-to-air combat"

@@meadmaker4525 Look up the AH-56, groundbreaking machine that was actually superior to the AH-64 that would come 20 years later. The Air Force pulled out all the stops getting it cancelled including created the AX program that led to the A-10 so they could claim duplication of capabilities.

I'm sure the UH-60 contract ended up being a much bigger win for Sikorsky than the S-67 ever could have been.
This helicopter is what led up the the Apache being as awesome as it is. They call the Apache a flying Abrams tank. Sweet video!!

Many TH-cam channel commentators speak at a slow speed or intentionally prolong video with filler commentary. The longer the video is viewed, the more ad money they get.
I love the obscure information. The cadence of the narrator has me rewinding sometimes to try to figure out what was said. Love the channel, if I could slow it down by about 15% it would be perfect.
The whole time I was thinking, "Why does it look so completely different? It doesn't look anything like a blackhawk at all." That was a great way to end the video. The ending and tragedy before it just pulled everything together and made it all make sense.
That's a bit if history I didn't know. I worked on the SH-60B Seahawk, which was a navy variant of the later Blackhawk. It was interesting to learn a little about the origin story of the line.

As a Marine we took hops on 47's & 53's on the Rock from one training area to another! But once I was medivac'd from the NTA to the CTA to remove a piece of bamboo that went through my hand! I was medivac'd in a Bell AH-1 Cobra! In the front seat while the Major flew in the back seat! Flying out the NTA jungle was a trip! And a little unnerving! Sitting in the front after always riding in the rear of 47's & 53's looking through the port holes! Like the difference between riding in a station wagon then riding in a passenger seat of a Corvette!
It's the Airwolf, a real live version of the Airwolf heli from the TV series.
Maybe this is where don belisario got the idea for the airwolf design for the show?

Forget the US Navy Top Gun jets... I wanted to be a US Army chopper pilot as a kid and this was the reason why!! One awesome and fierce looking Helo!! I would have loved to see this aircraft in person...or in action!! Sikorski was a brilliant engineer and it shows in every model the company developed and adopted by both millitary and civilian companies!! Alas, the closest I got to helos was durring my time in a Combat Support Hospital in the US Army, was as a Pharmacy Specialist in the late 80's to early 90's. I'm now a disabled US Army Veteran but always was impressed by the dedicated men and women of the Medivac and Air Ambience Units my unit worked with. Thanks for bringing back some fun memories!!

I was a 68B at Ft Carson between 96’ and 98’ assigned to K Co with 4th ID which became K Troop of the 3rd Cav when the 3 ACR took over at Carson. We were the only AVUM level unit in the area, servicing Ft. Bliss, Ft. Hood, Ft. Leavenworth, etc. and I mainly worked on the Blackhawks and the Apaches. Although we did have the last 2 active duty UH51 Hueys in the U.S. Army. Aside from the Apache, I’ve flown in every bird we have to include front seat of a Cobra once! Believe it or not, my favorite by far was the old Huey, with a great pilot named Cpt. Knots (or Knotts). I got to see the Comanche fly in once and did hear about this first version of the Blackhawk several times. We worked along several civilians from GE, Lockheed, etc. and one of the older Lockheed guys used to bring it up.
I'm always surprised by the number of people whose brains can't handle someone talking at a normal speed. I'm also always impressed by the Dark videos, keep up the great work mate.

When I was a 9 year old boy in 1969 my father took me to the hanger on Fort Wolters where the Cheyenne prototype was being stored, and while I am sure that my father only showed me this Helo because he knew that the Cheyenne had already been canceled, but as a little guy that felt really cool to get to see it! Fort Wolters was the U.S. Army's Primary helicopter training facility located in Mineral Wells, Texas.

Dunno 'bout y'all, but my brain was playing the Airwolf theme song the whole time.
They came up with something that astoundingly badass and futuristic back in 1970? Very impressive.
One it was built, I think the Army got on board to pay for the upgrades because it was so far ahead of its time. I think training pilots to fly it properly would have been time consuming and expensive...so they turned it into a fully funded test bed. Even if it hadn't crashed in England it had probably run its course....the Army cancelled it not because the pilot screwed up and hit the ground, but because they had already learned all they could from it.

It was more than an attack helicopter, it was a true assault helicopter (that's the name when it's a strongly armoured helicopter, capable to carry and launch a varied weapons load and capable of carrying a platoon of assault troopers on board).

In 1970 my last year in the Marines, I was at a USMC Quantico Va airfield air show, I remember there was a Sikorsky Blackhawk prototype there, look like the S-67.
You are correct. In 1972, I was a UH-1D Huey crewchief in the 3/1 Cavalry Division stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. Sikorsky gave a demonstration of this helicopter to the base personnel. They gave our commander, Gen. Senneff, a demo ride. I was thrilled to see the helicopter take off down the runway, climb up and make the first barrel roll that any of us in the aviation field had ever witnessed!! It was painted black, with a torquise blue stripe from front to back on both sides. It was the most awesome display of the capability of this helicopter. We never saw the helicopter go into full production. I don’t know why.

Keep in mind. The UH=60 can be armed with either a single left side door-mounted .50 cal heavy machine gun or twin fixed forward-facing 70 mm rocket pods.
The HMG feeds from a single 500-round belt, while each of the FFAR rocket pods are loaded with 19 70 mm rockets fitted with high-explosive (HE) warheads (for a combined total of 38 rockets).

The S-67 was destroyed in a 1974 crash. It was "fabricated" from the SH-3 (S-61) Sea King parts, hence the quick and under cost development. The Lockheed AH-56 Cheyenne 66-8831 is on display at Fort Campbell, 66-8832 is on display at the Army Aviation Museum, Fort Rucker, 66-8827 is on display at Fort Polk, Louisiana. Wish we had a S-67 to look at.
Vietnam was a political loss. A new helicopter would not have mattered. We needed new Senators.

@@Nightdiver20 To be fair, the US military commanders on the ground knew exactly what they wanted, it was the career politicians at home that didn't. The US military could have won that war, the material and leadership damage done to the communist forces was catastrophic.

I highly recommend a book by my friend Neal Thompson called "Reckoning: Vietnam and America's Cold War Experience, 1945-1991" He captures Vietnam in a viewpoint no one has ever even come close to. Why we were there, why we couldn't win, why we couldn't leave in a tell it like it is and no punches pull way. His book gave me the "ah ha.. make sense" and "those SOB's" moments.
Impressive aircraft. Nice to fly. As a Cobra Hall SIP had a chance to fly it during a demo tour. It was a skinny S-61 (which I flew years later). In combat it would have been as vulnerable as the Cobra. The Apache was a quantum leap in that area.
The survivability of the Apache is downright astonishing

@@duanepierson4375 Not according to their official web page and not during the entire life of the program. So I don't know where you were or what you did. The Army officially assigns the name, and so they must have agreed with Sikorsky that for the H-60, the correct tribe name was two words, not one word. They DO spell Seahawk, Jayhawk, but not Rescue Hawk, as one word, though. Yeah, I've been there and done that, too.

The Apache came after this. The Cobra is only there because the Commanche program was cancelled.
@@jackschulte6185 exactly... there was this awesome machine, and we still ended up with the cobra and apache. If this had continued development it probably would have gotten even better. As it was, it seems a much better aircraft thsn either the cobra or apache.
@@bigdatapimp Please don't listen to this video's hype. The narrator frequently confuses this machine for the UH-60 Blackhawk. They are two completely different platforms. There is no space for 6 additional people in that fuselage. There are only 4 small hardpoints on it, and it doesn't appear to have any capacity to have any guided munitions like the Apache or even the Cobra, which was adopted after a direct competition with this thing. Also note that after the crash, Sikorsky (not the US gov't) decided to cut the program. The S-67 was a nice handling helicopter, but it seems to be little more than that (especially in combat capability).

The AH-56 was cancelled because of political bs. The problems were fixed and a production run was ordered before it was cancelled due to "problems". Bell got to sell more AH-1s.

Did you hear the real story of how the Comanche (et al) got cancelled? They were revealing this new prototype at the Army War College, explaining the detail specs, like 280 Mph top speed at about 6000 ft, main attack profile was a shallow dive etc. Then a Colonel in the anti-aircraft branch piped up and said "Do you realise that's perfectly aligned for us as a target?" What he could have also mentioned is that helicopters have a massive radar signature which makes them dead ducks if they attack from above low altitude.
A conventional helicopter can hide in the weeds, has extreme agility and doesn't need to rely on "speed" to remain alive on the battlefield. This Comanche thing gave away most of the advantages of a helicopter in the attack, and just became a very slow plane with limited range.
It was a rare time when the US combined troop carrying and combat in a single platform like the Soviet Hind.
So this was basically the first Apache Helicopter in a way. 7k lbs of arms is pretty crazy. This helicopter should be revisited. Less expensive than an Apache with a good overall power in weapons.
The new attack hellicopter looks extremely similar to this decades old design.
