I love that the final shot revealed Colombo was bluffing about backup outside, plus we know he doesn't carry a gun, so he went in alone and unarmed, very bold
It's funny because its delivered by WIFDs🥇 But if you think about it, it's not that crazy, Columbo probably picked it up, put it🧀 in his pocket & had it later🥚💊💊
I don't think he was bluffing. that last shot doesn't have anything to do with the police, he wasn't implying they were right outside the window but they were probably parked in the driveway. Either way they would have heard the gunshot
Peter might be one of most genuinely honest and nicer people columbo has interacted with it's pretty funny in the end the brother was actually wrong about peter he was genuinely a good man
Yes agreed, there were many angles to this. The brother was wrong about Peter, and was mostly right about Beth. Apparently, Beth’s actions and decision-making in the past had led to the family’s overbearing protection. Of course, I still think they went a bit overboard at the beginning of episode. Threatening to fire Beth’s fiancé was taking it a bit too far.
This episode just aired on the Hallmark channel this past week during a Columbo marathon, which sent me down a rabbit hole of watching Columbo episodes on Prime. I think what really stood out about this episode, despite the flaws, was Beth. Of this first season, Beth is the most interesting and memorable female character so far, and Susan Clarke plays her with a wonderfully insane intensity. I love it. Thank you for this witty and detailed recap. I really enjoyed it!
I just saw “Feud: Capote vs the Swans” and I’m wondering if this episode was actually based on ‘the shooting of the century’, the murder of a NYC socialite by his wife Ann Woodward, who claimed that she thought her husband was a burglar when she shot and killed him in the middle of the night. He was about to divorce her so people were suspicious, lol. Grand jury refused to indict and her mother-in-law was horrified by the publicity and wanted it all to go away, so people think she might have also helped her elude justice, even tho she always hated her.
Peter Falk and Leslie Nielsen-two audience favorites who started out in dramatic parts before revealing a special gift for comedy later in their careers. Gawd, I miss them both!
'Airplane' brought out the intense woodenness of Leslie Nielsen's pre-1980 television and movie performances in wide-screen glory. To the actor's (and no doubt his bank account) credit, he fully embraced the new self-mocking image and made a nice name-above-the-title autumn Hollywood career as Lt. Frank Drebin, Mr. Magoo, Dracula, a comical Richard 'The Fugitive' Kimble parody, et al. Godspeed, Mr. Nielsen.
Nielson was a generational gem🌟 As a teen, my friends & family would watch The Naked Gun movies, Police Squad & Airplane! and absolutely die laughing. It was like watching Platoon😂 We even memorized his lines and to this day we still use them on anything that warrants a stupid reply. "But I think that's only common sense"😄⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I dont remember Falk in anything funny after Columbo. He was in The Princess Bride which was a big deal, that movie has a huge following.
@@johnfeeley7094He plays in a movie called Corky Romano and it’s hilarious. If you watch it let me know what you think. I didn’t even recognize him in it at first. 😂
I have binge watched all your reviews of Columbo over the last two days. You've done a great job, and your production value and information gets better with each one. You've lifted my spirits the last couple of days. Had a few good chuckles.
Susan Clark was the wife of Alex Karras who was a four-time Pro Bowl player with the Detroit Lions, where he played from 1958 to 1970. As an actor, Karras played Mongo in the 1974 comedy film Blazing Saddles. He also starred as George Papadopolis, the adoptive father of Webster Long (Emmanuel Lewis), in the ABC sitcom Webster (1983-1989) along with his wife Susan. They were married in 1980 and remained so until Alex's death in 2012.
Mongo is great. An unforgettable character, such that if you ask someone who has probably seen Blazing Saddles, even decades ago, if they remember Mongo, without naming the movie, many people will name Blazing Saddles. Can I remember any other character name, even Gene Wilder's character - no. (Sisko kid, maybe? )
@@garrick3727 Oh, I remember them all. Gene Wilder's character was the Waco Kid (but there were some who called him ... Jim). Cleavon Little played Sheriff Bart (aka Black Bart). Madeleine Kahn was Lily von Shtupp, Harvey Korman was Hedley LaMarr (often mistaken for Heddy), Mel Brooks was Gov Le Petomaine, and Slim Pickens was Mr. Taggart. Alex Karras also had a prominent role in Victor Victoria.
I just can’t express how much your videos and insight speak to what draws me into columbo. The show to me has always been a time capsule love letter to Los Angeles. I love learning about the extras, the directors, music, staging, neighborhoods and the houses, my word the houses. I really appreciate your work, thank you.
Lady In Waiting is one of my favorite Columbos, and your review of it is so much fun. I love how you catch small details I've never noticed, such as the GM keys on Bryce's key ring. The production could have used someone with your attention to detail, because those keys should have instead been FoMoCo keys for his 71 Lincoln Continental. And since you mentioned Edna's Continental in Suitable for Framing, I can't help but offer more Continental trivia. Edna's Continental is also Paul Williams' car in Ransom for a Dead Man. Maybe Edna bought it from Leslie.
@@WatchitforDays Doesnt it seem like whenever you make an effort to study something that from out of nowhere people appear to offer you even more knowledge?
I laughed out loud at your description of Beth's boardroom outfit. I have to admit I kind of like how bold and outlandish it is, and how it matches her bold and outlandish behavior in that scene. No one in that room can believe their eyes and neither can the viewer. Somehow it all works.
'Wearing a .. conductors hat to conduct a meeting' is a line that should go down in history. Priceless. Her hat reminded me of Bob Dylan's hat on the cover of his first album, eponymously titled. It looked silly there too.
Just a magnificent review- your erudition and attention to detail is remarkable. Now I really want to watch this episode again with the background you provided. You are a true talent-thank you.

OK so first off - your reviews are amazing but you already know that. I am currently watching all your Columbo reviews and it's a pleasure to watch them all. Your format is so fun and informative. I have watched all these Columbo episodes so many times and they never get old. However, with your added research and commentary it adds a new level and I am watching them again like its the first time. Thank you so much, I know it must take a lot of work to research all these like you do. It is very interesting to learn all the details of these episodes. You are creating an accurate record and a new amazing way to watch them. There are no other crime/detective shows like Columbo and that is why it was such a success. A special thanks to Levinson and Link.

Good afternoon! I came across your your channel by accident (as it came up on my feed). I am a HUGE fan of Columbo (my late grandmother and I would watch them together). When I would be at work, she would record them on VHS for me and, even, edit the commercials out as well. When I got home, we would watch them together so this show holds a special place in my heart. I was hooked on your channel after watching your first review and have been binge-watching them all ever since! You do an outstanding job and I'm, very much, looking forward to many others from you! Universal should hire you to do commentaries for the dvds as you are very concise, humorous, and in my humble opinion, have all of your facts together when you present these for us all to enjoy. Again, thank you for all that you do and I will be buying some of your soap! Uh, excuse me ma'am, just one more thing...don't mean to be a bother to ya...I will be buying some of your soap as well!

1971 ! Bloody-hell it feels like this episode was only yesterday. As memory serves, Columbo was by far the best North American show on telly. Your retrospectives give me a huge nostalgia blast. Thank you.
I've seen this episode many times and it's one of my favorites. But I love how you identify the virtually unknown actors, who I've wondered about, but never cared enough to spend time finding out about. I also love the satirical way you describe the bloopers...like "...Columbo's shoe transports itself back onto his foot". Good job...thank you!
11:45 “Beth hurriedly hesitates” so completely captures the acting. 😅 “Do you want me to hurry to the door?” “I want you to hurry to the door, yes, BUT! You’re hesitant, see? You hesitate going to the door.” “So I should stop? I don’t reach it?” “No, no, you go to the door, don’t stop. But, see, you’re hesitant. Yeah?” “Oh, oh, okay. I’ll just stop a couple times on the way--“ “Yeah, yeah, exactly, but very fast, okay,? You’re in a great hurry to get there!” “But you said I’m hesitant?” “Yes, yeah, but it’s fast, right? You gotta hesitate fast, real fast.” … … “What? You okay?” “Yes, just, you know, after this scene, I’m going to kill you, Norm. Let’s go.”

It's so cool seeing Leslie Nielsen in "serious" roles - as an 80s & 90s kid I'm always waiting for him to say or do something funny 😅 Thanks for putting this together, I particularly liked your line about the cheese and the pizza 😉🍕
He's kinda funny in the episode where he's Patrick McGoohan's murder victim... when he tells the despairing carnie, who he's just hustled out of a stuffed animal "Keep it buddy, I'm all heart."

@@WatchitforDays My Shirley Girly (because she is girly named Shirley) is a chocolate lab. she is the least dog like dog i have ever known. very selfish, lazy and a complete coward. This episode ranks up there for me, and I really enjoyed your review of it. I thought that Susan Clark and Leslie Nielsen both had strong performances in their respective roles. Beth's metamorphosis both in terms of appearance and behavior was remarkable, and Susan Clark did a great job there. Nielsen was good in a more understated role as someone who clearly loves Beth but is having a difficult time understanding her changes as the episode progresses. The scene with him and Columbo at the drive-in diner was great, and also demonstratea the trust that begins to build between them and eventually ends up helping him crack the case. Beth started out as a sympathetic character, and even though her behavior as the episode progressed made it difficult to feel that way about her, in a way I could understand her acting out like that after years of being repressed and not supported by her family. It wasn't just her father and Bryce, but even her mother, as the face slap scene demonstrates. Like you, at first I thought Beth's "are you really?" comment was about Columbo being married rather than his compulsive nature. The most humorous part of your review was when you described Beth's boardroom scene outfit - "as well as some furniture upholstery for a jacket" 🤣 I also loved the "Airplane!" references you threw in throughout.
@@WatchitforDays Thanks! One other thing that occurred to me (one more thing ... 😉). During the boardroom scene, where Beth is talking to Peter after Columbo left, she said "well if I've changed it's because I thought you'd like a more exciting woman". I wonder if part of her metamorphosis was a reaction to what Bryce said to her about Peter only being interested in her for the money, and as a result she was trying to be more edgy to please Peter (even though in reality that's not something she needed to do).
And it's understandable why she got more and more bold. Her taking her brother's life was the first time she ever took control. Because that's all she ever really wants, control.
@@WatchitforDays I can only speak for myself, but background extras is something that I always knew were there I just never really gave them much thought. To a point, that is there job, their purpose. They are a living prop to give the scene ambience and add a touch of reality; a bridge which allows us, the audience, to suspend our disbelief. But I digress. Your attention to detail is amazing. Never before have I seen a review that goes into so much depth. The actors biography/filmography and short synopsis, Identifying the vehicles being driven, the weapons being used, the locations being filmed, etc... help elevate a simple review into a mini documentary. Anyone can say "show good. Me give 4/5." But you are able to make a review become as intriguing as the material being reviewed.
Over the years of watching and rewatching Columbo episodes is I've noticed two recurring patterns. You see it in most episodes if you are looking for it. There is usually some dialog where the victim trash talks the murderer. For this episode it's the scene that you pointed out where Bryce basically says Beth is a big loser and why would her bf be interested in anything but her money. The other pattern is the murderer trash talking Columbo before the big finish.
Shonna, I give you five coffees out of five for your magnificent review. You really have a keen eye for details! Two of those I’ve noticed myself years ago, as I own the full Columbo DVD boxset: the dog barking while not actually barking and the best one, the « Oh, thank you » said twice for nothing. How could they miss that one while editing? Anyway, carry on the great work, I just hope you reach Columbo loves the night life. ❤️

Your attention to the details of the show is amazing. So, I played the whole series over and over until I knew every detail of what was happening. It helped...a lot. So, it's fun watching and listening to your excellent review. Thanks.

@@WatchitforDays I made my comment before I watched your entire review. This was the first of your videos that I've seen. As it went along I realized how funny numerous of your comments were particularly in regard to Beth losing her marbles...like:' The tiles are coming off her roof' or 'the cheese is sliding off Beth's pizza'...very funny. I look forward to watching your other videos. Thanks for your considerate comment/response.
In regards to your sentiment of “Beth didn’t need to murder her brother” because she could have gone off with Peter anyway: I think the motive of it just being that she wanted to be with Peter was a slight misdirect. I think her true intention was primarily to take over the family company. This is why she had her car ordered in advance because she anticipated being a new position of power. Additionally, even if we were to believe that it was about Peter… her brother put it into her head that nobody would love her for her, that any suitor would be after her for her position in life. This put doubts in her head that Peter actually loved her. So she figures if she runs the company, even if he’s only after her because of that - he’d be less inclined to leave her if she ran the company. Also she likely figured he’d love her more if she promoted him because her brothers words obviously stuck with her and she assumed he might be right.
Very well thought out, Ryan. This is a good hypothesis and deeper than I give the episode credit for. Thank you for sharing, I loved reading your thoughts!
Interesting theory. They never developed this idea in the episode but it does go a long way towards explaining where the prior car order came from, which to me seemed to have come out of nowhere, and in explaining how she was able to jump quickly to the proposition that maybe Peter wasn't the right man for her after all. I didnt like your theory at first but on second consideration it does explain a few things in her personality, including how she was able to point her gun at Columbo, that it wasnt all about Peter, it was about control. Fits with the title too. Very interesting.. Good one.
I love lady in waiting. I also love how you’re using Airplane! Funny, I’m not sure I remember a single episode of Columbo that shows blood other than Blueprint for Murder when blood was discovered on a Western Hat… later in the 1989 revival, they showed plenty of blood. The building where Peter Falk and Leslie Nielsen are eating the hamburgers, was at the time called, Tasty Freeze.. malts and shakes were their specialty.
I remember we see a little blood on the Troubled Waters episode when the singing lady got shot in the back. I just like having a little fun with all the bloodless murders :)

@@WatchitforDays When he says "I'm compulsive" and she leans toward him and says "Are you REALLY?" Peter Falk looks startled for real, as if it might've been an ad-lib by Susan Clark. It also looks flirtatious, like she's pretending to think that when he says "compulsive" he means sexually compulsive. But maybe I'm making that up.

I love your videos! I laugh so much, you crack me up. I love Columbo, and you do such a great job deciphering them. Thank you so much for all your hard work.
Your sharp-eyed/eared observations and wry comments make for a solid entertainment! :) . In keeping with the comedic elements of the series, the studio should consider adding your posts as a special feature on any episode reissue. Perhaps you should arrange a pitch meeting! Re those extras with hundreds of uncredited roles, surely the pay couldn't be such that they could earn a living that way. But for those in their working years, how could they have such flexibility in their schedules to be so available? I think there's a script potential with such a main character having this occupation as a central component. A comedy perhaps? And perhaps you should bring this idea and/or a script outline to your pitch meeting? :)
Haha, wouldn't that be something pitching to NBC/Universal... Thank you for your great vote of confidence, Arthur. I absolutely agree with your idea of a potential script idea of the professional "extra." That would be interesting and certainly comedy material.

Hello there! Another "darling" review...as always. You know when Bochco's involved with the writing, you're in for a treat. And it's always a bigger treat to see Leslie Nielsen in a serious role, the man had some incredible range. I can see why Columbo never warmed up to Beth, the woman is a walking iceberg, no redeeming qualities whatsoever. I had the same thought about Columbo appaarently entering Beth's house in the end without proof of a warrant (something he likes to flash a lot in the series) but we can give our boy just a little leeway, right? As always, looking forward to the next review from our favorite "never misses a single detail" TH-camr. Columbophiles for life! 🤟

Nielsen.
Very well said. 👍

100% ABSOLUTELY AGREED-!!!!!!!
Wonderful information! I did not know any of this, thank you very much for taking the time to share :)
Merci beaucoup for this.
I remember Alex Karras portraying "Potato Brumbaugh" in the sprawling and engrossing miniseries, "Centennial."
Thanks
Thank you very much for this sweet gift ❤️😊❤️
I just can’t express how much your videos and insight speak to what draws me into columbo. The show to me has always been a time capsule love letter to Los Angeles.
Very good observation! Why didn't that thought cross my mind that he should have had some FoMoCo keys? I'm glad you noticed. Very good!

Aww, your comment made my day, thank you!
I totally agree
I laughed out loud at your description of Beth's boardroom outfit. I have to admit I kind of like how bold and outlandish it is, and how it matches her bold and outlandish behavior in that scene. No one in that room can believe their eyes and neither can the viewer. Somehow it all works.
Yes, her outfit totally works for what is going on with her at the time. Outlandish is a good word for Beth!
It WAS funny, but it is second place to "A couple of purple hankies."
'Wearing a .. conductors hat to conduct a meeting' is a line that should go down in history. Priceless.
Her hat reminded me of Bob Dylan's hat on the cover of his first album, eponymously titled. It looked silly there too.
We call that Beth’s Burger King outfit, as Burger King employees briefly wore those hats in TV commercials in the 70s…
41:30 Beth is sarcastically saying “Thank you” to Columbo for (not) helping her off with her coat, and then again for (not) pulling out her chair.
Just a magnificent review- your erudition and attention to detail is remarkable. Now I really want to watch this episode again with the background you provided. You are a true talent-thank you.

11:45 “Beth hurriedly hesitates” so completely captures the acting. 😅

“I want you to hurry to the door, yes, BUT! You’re hesitant, see? You hesitate going to the door.”
“So I should stop? I don’t reach it?”
“No, no, you go to the door, don’t stop. But, see, you’re hesitant. Yeah?”
“Oh, oh, okay. I’ll just stop a couple times on the way--“

What a wonderful comment, Sam! I loved reading all your thoughts! And thank you for the very kind words as well ❤️
@@WatchitforDays Thanks!
@@beatlesfansam You know, I think you might be right about that. Bryce did seem to imply she was very plain.
And it's understandable why she got more and more bold. Her taking her brother's life was the first time she ever took control. Because that's all she ever really wants, control.
I love your breakdowns. I don't think I will ever look at extras in the background the same again.
I appreciate that very much! You'll start recognizing people if you watch the backgrounds 😊
@@Onering80 You are extremely kind! Thank you for this encouragement ❤️
Yes! You are very right! A lot of trash talk going around from the murdered and murderer. Thank you for sharing this observation :)
In Sky High IQ this is reversed, the murderer trash talks the victim before murdering him, and Columbo sort of does also.
An amazing episode! There are a thousand reasons I watch episode this over and over again.

@@WatchitforDays I made my comment before I watched your entire review. This was the first of your videos that I've seen. This is a great video! Very entertaining and funny and smart. And love all the info - the actors backgrounds, the cars, etc. Really excellent.
Thank you very much, Wayne! Glad you enjoyed it
In regards to your sentiment of “Beth didn’t need to murder her brother” because she could have gone off with Peter anyway: I think the motive of it just being that she wanted to be with Peter was a slight misdirect.
Good one.
I NEVER thought about it that way, wow 😮
Well her family did mess with her self-esteem in the long run.

@@WatchitforDays When he says "I'm compulsive" and she leans toward him and says "Are you REALLY?" Peter Falk looks startled for real, as if it might've been an ad-lib by Susan Clark.

Hey there, just wanted to say how much I'm enjoying this series. I adore Columbo, so I'm going through the whole thing in order, and since I own the box set I've been re-watching the episodes along with you. It's been fun!
That's amazing! I'm so glad you're here and enjoying Columbo❤️
You are just the kindest, Evan, thank you! Your comment was a joy to read.
I definitely like to give Columbo some leeway ☺️

@@WatchitforDays Always a pleasure, these vids are a total stress relief for me. Haha! Yes! For life! 🤜🤛
Another excellent review. I was particularly looking forward to this - as this Columbo episode is a favourite of mine.
Thank you very much, Ian! I'm so happy you enjoyed it 🙂
The most amazing feat is how Susan Clark manages to part her hair in a different style while holding a gun and preparing to shoot Colombo from 50.30 to 50.37. Paging Continuityyyyyy
Haha good point!
Great videos! Just found your videos. Big Columbo fan and love your presentations! That you say some names wrong adds to the charm and I love the way you handle it 🙂
You are very kind, thank you ❤️ I'm glad you're here!
The tiles off the roof expression was the beginning of a brief string, I enjoyed them all. I agree with your 5 out of 5 cigars rating. Looking forward to more.
I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it
I love your take and all the Calumbo trivia!
It was funny how the lawyer was in a bar drinking Milford Whiskey, yet the bartender dumped pretzels from a box into the bowl!
I've watched every episode of columbo multiple times including this one and I never realized this was the mom on Webster. That's wild.
Wild for sure
Another great episode analyzed. Excellent work!
Thank you very much, Craig!!!
Please and thank you. Spreading Columbo amongst humans serves all.
I agree :)
Hey! So, being completely transparent, I haven't watched any of your videos just yet. However, I only started watching Columbo in 2022, and quickly became a fan. I'd been looking for a recap channel like this, and am glad I've found one. I look forward to watching your stuff!
I sure hope you have fun and I'm glad you're here!
Another most excellent review. Thank you
Thank you very much, Bob :)
Epic as always, and since finally on holiday, it is time to watch it for days.
Aw, thank you, Balazs! I really appreciate your kindness :)
Very entertaining, thank you.
I'm so happy you enjoyed it, Michele ❤️
Thanks for all Your efforts on this real excellent channel😊
I'm so glad you're enjoying it :)
@@WatchitforDays You give us some further informations about the actors f ex, very exciting to listen
I had to stop at 39:50, "that the tiles had blown off of Beth's roof" ! Hilarious and so appropriate. I've never heard that expression, well done. And now, back to the review.
I'm so glad you got a kick out of that 😊
Another great recap, good job.
Really enjoyed your IDing of the vehicles, well done👍
Thank you very much for watching another one of my videos! I'm glad you like the vehicle IDs 😊
That Indian head sign was very likely an old Pontiac dealership. That was their logo way back when.
Very interesting! Thank you for sharing that information
