Tarikh is a daily program in which we present you with incidents and stories of noteworthy persons of History in Hindi. In this edition Tarikh Nikhil talks about Tipu Sultan and Napoleon Bonaparte. Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821), also known as Napoleon I, was a French military leader and emperor who conquered much of Europe in the early 19th century. Born on the island of Corsica, Napoleon rapidly rose through the ranks of the military during the French Revolution (1789-1799). After seizing political power in France in 1799, he crowned himself emperor in 1804.
Shrewd, ambitious and a skilled military strategist, Napoleon successfully waged war against various coalitions of European nations and expanded his empire. However, after a disastrous French invasion of Russia in 1812, Napoleon abdicated the throne two years later and was exiled to the island of Elba. In 1815, he briefly returned to power in his Hundred Days campaign. After a crushing defeat at the Battle of Waterloo, he abdicated once again and was exiled to the remote island of Saint Helena, where he died at 51.
In 1798, Tipu Sultan signed a secret agreement with Napoleon Bonaparte. Tipu Sultan had requested Napoleon for help in driving the British away from India. The aim of the agreement was to ally with the French in his struggle against the British,the Marathas and a few neighbouring kingdoms. Even before the work on this deal could proceed, in 1799 the British along with the Marathas and the Nizam of Hyderabad attacked Tipu Sultan. This battle was called the fourth Anglo-Mysore war. Tipu Sultan was killed in this war. After this Napoleon also gave up his intention of coming to India.

Tipu sultan was a visionary ruler who foresee the dangers of east india company policies so he continued to convince other powerful rulers of india like mahadaji shinde of maratha empire , sikh confedercy in punjab and outside india asked helped from napoleon but with the death of mahadaji shinde he lost all hope and British defeated and killed tipu in fourth anglo mysore war.
Mahadji scinde was in control of Gwalior maratha region was rule by bhosle and pyne Gaekwad .
Tipu sultan agreed to pay 12 lakh rs yearly to maratha but maratha betrayed him and supported British along with nizam of Hyderabad, and four year later British defeated Maratha

Tipu was a religious fanatic and also was a close aide of the Nizam. Both were belligerents to the Maratha Empire or any of the Hindu Empires. Hyder, Tipu's father was defeated by Madhavrao Peshwa (elder) in the Battle of Rakshasbhuvan.
Also the Marathas under Sawai Madhavrao (younger) and Nana Phadnavis defeated Tipu's General Mushramulk Khan. Mushramulk who had vowed in front of Tipu before the war to cut off every Maratha soldier's head and to present it before Tipu and to send Sawai Madhavrao to beg on every door at Benaras was defeated, captured and brought in Sawai Madhavrao's court. Tipu has to pay heavy fines to Sawai Madhavrao and Nana Phadnavis as ransom and only then is Mushramulk allowed to go.
Even it may be noted that 18 years before Tipu fought the British the Marathas under the leadership of Mahadji Shinde and Nana Phadnavis defeated the British in the 1st Anglo Maratha War.
It is a myth that Tipu fought the British in the interests of India, he fought the British to save his own kingdom and his religion.
Tipu was Islamic bigot, he killed thousands of innocent Hindus and converted them.
