We got together four of the best budget electric mountain bikes with prices tags of £4k or less and put them to the test... and the results were surprising to say the least!

The bikes we reviewed are the Decathlon Rockrider E-Expl 520S, the Giant Stance E+ 1, the Yamaha Moro 7, and the Polygon Siskiu T7E.
Sports superstore Decathlon, has been selling e-bikes for a number of years, but its Rockrider E-Expl 520S looks like its best model yet. It gets air-sprung suspension, an alloy frame, removable 500Wh battery, Brose motor, and even a dropper post. All for £2,999.
Giant makes bikes for many other brands and has arguably the most sophisticated frame building tech on the planet. Hence it's alloy Stance frame, with Flexpoint suspension design, looks sleek and feels solid. It also comes with a Yamaha motor with plenty of power and torque, and a 625Wh battery. Price? £3,999 from a Giant dealer or online.
But Yamaha doesn't just make motors... The Moro 7 is the motorcycle brand's first emtb, boasting a unique twin-spar frame that encloses the battery and shock like a motorbike engine. It also gets some impressively high end parts for its £4,150 price tag.
Finally we have the Polygon Siskiu T7E, available from outdoor superstore, Go Outdoors. It costs £4k, but you'll need to be a Go Outdoors member to get that price. Fortunately, membership only costs £5! With proper enduro geometry and a genuine Shimano motor and 630Wh battery, this looks like a bike that can be shredded to within an inch of its life.

If they want eMTB to flourish, make them affordable first.. it’s not about an arms race of who’s the one that can make the most expensive bike but this is about the community, cheers to these companies that do this..
There needs to be more videos like this. It just opens the door to most people who are considering getting an ebke. I would love to see a round-up of the entry level bikes
The fact that £4,000 is entry level for electric bicycles is ridiculous. It's the reason I bought a motorcycle instead of an ebike, way more for the money. They are also only discussing RRP, you can get most ebikes for way less than RRP because they start overpriced.
Great vid - good to see some cheaper emtb getting some coverage . Not a lot of people can afford or justify £5k plus bikes .
Where are those trials - nice shaped berm !
Thanks! Trails are BikePark Wales, Surrey Hills, and Forest of Dean area.
Well done for reviewing bikes that ordinary people can afford.
Cheers!
i got a haibike alltrail 4 on discount price for 1999euro it is an older model 2023 but still a brand new bike and it does a great job!
Now what would it take to turn the Rockrider from a good bike to a great bike?
I’d start with the brakes and tyres.
I took the time to test Moro07 and it is great bike. I spent a few hours on the bike to realise the difference between a good bike and an affordable.
Yamaha Moro 07 I’d just streets ahead of the other bike I looked at and for the price I paid it was a no brainer.
I have taken the bike to bits and lubricated all three moving parts ( out the factory it’s dry) removed all the cables and re routed them, ( the motor harness and speed sensor harness is too long and this was interfering with the dropper post operation.
I have also changed to run a 29er up front and I honestly say I night and day difference in the ride handling and the speed it carries is incredible. The balance and the weight shift to the back of the bike just makes it feel so agile.
Down side of this bike ( for me battery size and weight) 500 watts and4.8 kg. For the battery so to carry a second in a back pack is difficult for long days out. I managed to 68 miles on one battery I’m 69kg fully loaded with kit.
My girlfriend has the same bike as well and uses every day for work and leisure activities at the weekend she has clocked up 750+miles in just a few months and the only maintenance is chain cleaning and lubricants.
As far as I know they have sold out of the bikes in the uk for a few months but that might’ve changed since but if you are near a Yamaha bike dealer / showroom and you want to get an e-bike get down there and get a test ride on one,
Great insight. Thanks for the comment and glad you’re enjoying the bike 👍
Yamaha didnt just come in, they were one of the early pioneers of ebikes.
I just bought a gasgas Enduro 1.0 new for $3000 canadian including tax. Ive been having a blast on it.
Nice shapely review gents!
Good stuff guys! My critique of all of your reviews would be to always mention if a bike doesn't have headset cable routing and highlight that as a huge feature and vice versa to bikes that have it and loudly call them out for it.... the larger MTB media like yourselves needs to help get the message out to the incompetent frame designers out there so this ridiculous kool fad disappears on their next frame release. We consumers can speak with our wallet to drive it home.
Good point! We also hate headset routed cables. Fortunately only the Giant has them in this test. 👍
Great video. Now please do a round up of emtb hardtails that are under 2500. Radon, Cube, Ghost, canyon, mondraker. They all have great e hardtails but nobody does reviews on them
We’re not big fans of ebike hardtails for proper mountain biking. They’re fine for fire roads and dirt tracks, but too cumbersome and uncomfortable on anything more serious. Decathlon actually has a cheaper version of the E-Expl for around £2.5k which looks decent.
Good video
Nice Test with great affordable eBikes! Cool that you tested the Decathlon's. They have quite some interesting bikes in their stores. And if discounted they are best bang for your buck. Also they have the buy back/reby option, which nobody else has.
Thanks! Yeah the buy back scheme is cool.
I’ve a 2021 Giant stance e+ 3pro. Massively different spec than the one shown here - o rings yes, Shimano 4 pot brakes 10-51 12 speed gearing - the one reviewed is nothing like what you can get on an “affordable “ electric Stance
Funny that! Compare a different model of bike from a different model year and it’s not the same! 🤷♂️
That Yamaha's cables make me feel uneasy.
Great review though.
Ha! Fair enough! Thanks though.
I reakon the yamaha would have to be a fun bike with the 27.5 and lower weight
I seen 1 on the trail here few weeks ago looked good too
Also in Oz yamaha does 1% finance
There's a lot of people having problems with that new Polygon
Battery problems?
The test winning bike was great with the exception of two major issues on a brand new bike.... ok
Both were fixed 👍
I payed £2500 for a cube stereo hpc 750 brand new . Better value by a mile than all these bikes. Shimano deore, magura mt thirty, Shimano domain 160 , carbon Frame......
Great deal! I’m guessing it was on sale though?
@@MBRmagazine yes. That's the top tip for getting a good bike within the budget price region. Look for the sales.
Or you could just get the Cube Stereo Action Team 160 for £4199, Fox factory 38 and Float X carbon frame full xt. No brainier.
Im on the trail with my Walmart decathlon 😅 bike
Flexstays and over 26KG 😂🎉
I mean they’re not really doing it for weight saving!
3 Grand cheapest lol
Exactly what I was thinking
This is amateur bike, and should be driven like amateurs do. What's the point of that jumping??
It's like F1 driver testing fiat panda full power, simply stupid.
You should read your comment and figure out what you just asked. SMH.
