Worked! 21 year old Honda ES 5000. My son-in-law got the motor running like it’s brand new and then it would not make electricity. Service manager at Honda dealership told me he wouldn’t even bring a 21-year-old generator in the shop if it was him and spend any money on it. This 10 minute fix worked like a charm and now I have a new generator! Thanks much!!

BAM! My Honda 5000SX generator has been tirelessly charging the batteries at my off-grid cabin for over 15 years. Last year I increased the solar panel output by 10x and upgraded the batteries. This means the generator rarely runs. Today I went to charge the batteries and no AC from the gen! It's probably been 4 - 5 months since I ran the generator. I followed the steps in this vid and am charging the batteries with my properly operating generator as we speak. This is a superbly well crafted video: states the problem to fix and provides simple step-by-step directions to correct the problem. THANK YOU and well done.

Thank you so very much my friend🙏🏻
I am from north Montreal and own the very same Honda.
This summer my autistic son started my generator while I was still hooked at hydro…
Since the generator made some freaking noise I was sure one coil has opened.
Following your troubleshooting…when I disconnected positive and negative leads from the brush assembly…the brush assembly came in 3 pieces😉
I replaced the brush assembly and had to reflash the field. I built myself a 3 batteries 12v power supply and after a long 5-10 seconds an orange spark came from within the stator/rotor assy and after shutting OFF generator and replug AVR I started and it took quite a long while to build up voltage….green light came back strong…120V on dial and switched to 240V and wow…there was 240 volts.
Cost me $4.99 canadian dollars because of your video.
How much do I owe you my friend?
Just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for just taking the time to film yourself while you didi it😉🙌🏻

Just curious - is there any reason the generator has to be running when you flash it? You're just magnetizing the rotor, right? ISTM that it would work just as well to just put 12V across the rotor for a few seconds when it's not running.

It works, but what would be nice is if they had some kind of bios battery system that is weather proof with a boost system or step up to 12 volts. Because eventually it will do this again over time. It will lose its remnance over time. Even with a bios it will probably do it but at least you can increase the excitation time with this backup set up.

The brushes are within the plastic end of the generator and there is no plate to remove to access the wiring. the wiring comes out with the generator end. Can you really just use 12 volts to do this? If that possible I'll just do that because I have a few jumpstart boxes like yours. I got mine working but it's generating 90-100 volts but that's better than no volts.

You don't need to flash the field as others explain / all that happens when you do this trick is that it pulls the brushes down onto the commutator to make full contact onto the brushes /which will work for a day or two. the real reason the Honda generator and others need this temporary trick is because of the crappy insulation they use to protect the brush wires, from what ? I have no idea, just clean the brush housing and remove the insulation from the brush wire so the brushes have free movement and you will never have to do the stupid flash trick or drill motor BS again / use any cleaner for electronics to clean the brush housing/holder and use wd40 to assemble

    • @gbean
      @gbean 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

Well, you're wrong.... But this is the Internet so I guess that's allowed.
In many inexpensive generator ends with a voltage regulator if left sitting too long they can lose the residual magnetism in the rotor. Without this magnetism it will not build up voltage enough to power the voltage regulator and thus start providing field power.
By using an external DC battery to excite the rotor while running you create this rotating magnetic field and remagnetize the rotor. Sometimes a voltage regulator may have a large capacitor that needs a charge as well at the same time.

When are you going to tell us how this works? Was part of the procedure to connect the 12VDC to the brushes (obviously), with the switch on the panel to the OFF position, THEN turn the switch to the ON position. (is that flashing the field?) Then shut it all down. So, what the hell happened? You never said. An instructor you will never be.
