Dr. Killjoy is such a cool concept for a villain. He's a ghost that only really comes out from film projectors scattered all over the asylum, yet he can still interact with the physical world to do some seriously messed up stuff to the inmates.
Even some of the prisoners think the doctor is doing the right thing despite the horrors he inflicted on them, possibly blaming the supernatural properties of the island itself for corrupting him.

The music, sound effects, and how they made them for The Suffering is great. There's a making-of documentary about it, and one about Eastern State Penitentary, which Carnate Island was heavily inspired by. Also, it was one of the earlier games to have a functioning karma system. Torque's model would change appearance, voice lines would change, and there's multiple endings. They were both a blast, each with their own mood and playstyle. Tons of care was put into the designs. It has a really over-the-top element that you see more in horror films than videogames. It has been 2 decades and there's still nothing to directly compare them to. The old graphics give it an additional layer of creepy ambiance that has aged well

I like how the moral choice system forces every minor character you meet to die immediately, regardless of your path. Because either the characters would either be killed by the player anyway or stay alive and force the devs to make a bunch of different intricate plot branches depending on who was and was not killed, which would just be too much work to implement.

The second one wasn't necessarily bad if you view it as a stand alone title. The problem was rather that it didn't stand out enough to be considered a sequel. If it was released as a DLC package, it probably would've been received better.

Wow.. you guys explained like about 10% of the game. There is soooooo much more here. One thing that is interesting is that if you start a new game after beating it you have a prolonged playable opening where you arrive. In it you become the beast, but no one seems to see it. So there is a theory that he doesn't actually physically transform.

@@HowdyHowdy_It'd be kinda hard seeing as the second game, Termina, confirms that around half of the potential endings of the first game are canon but not quite.
Specifically Ending S for D'arce, Ragnavaldr and Enki are confirmed canon but Cahara's S Ending might be canon due to the sword named Blue Sin appearing in his photo and it being a really powerful weapon in Termina.
Then there's Ending A but only to the part where the Girl transforms because she is still alive as the God of Fear and Hunger in the second game.
Then Ending B as Nas'rah is still around, just burnt and in the Magic Black Man (O'saa)'s pocket.
Then a lot more minor stuff like Moonless being alive, Pocketcat, etc.
