I LOVE the hands. They always say in figure drawing the hands aren't that important, but Gula has made me realize that in his drawings, the body is less complex so it is okay to have complex hands.

I am so enjoying this! Part 1 and Part 3 with Tim Gula couldn't have come at a better time: I am taking Proko's figure drawing online course, first week, on Lesson 1. Already just drawing along with Proko's video there has completely changed the quality of my lines in gestural sketches, literally within that first half hour that I did it. It is SOO important to show someone the hand movement in drawing, for a longish period of time - not just couple of minutes, and for the student to do it at the same time, in order to GET it. That's the difference between information and understanding. I think this is a fantastic half an hour draw-along lesson from Tim to learn from; the quality of this is so much superior compared to the ocean of other TH-cam videos that usually end up waste of time for me personally. Big THANK YOU to both Stan and Tim for this!!

I had no idea that Reilly rhythms were great for gesture. It seems every other video uses it for very stiff wireframes that don’t have any life to them. Much thanks for opening my eyes to the possibilities Tim.

Tim Gula part 2: Yes, this is how I sharpen my pencil, too - with just the razor, not the sanding paper, and I thought I was doing it wrong :) And - YES, the kind of teacher Tim talks about is the type I need as well: someone super talented who will make me suffer and bring me to tears, so that I can "grow into a better person and a better artist" - these are golden words!! If I could choose my suffering in this experience of lifetime, this IS the kind that I would choose - Universe, please send me one like that :). Until then, I will be learning from Tim Gula - thank you, Tim, for sharing your secrets on your channel! I feel so much gratitude for the great artists who contribute by teaching others - this world needs more drawers and painters, more people who create more than consume.

For those of you starting out it's a lot easier to get proportions in control when your start with the torso. When your start with the head you can get wildly out of control lmao.

turning scribbles into proportional shapes!, now that's a godly level of skill!!!, it's like drawing with electric sparks!!, and there isn't ANY commitment to the camera angle!, so it's like re-creating the figure after seeing it and not like we do it (copy what we see) which are 2 different things, lol it's gonna take a hundred years to get to this level of legendary skill!

Although it is sketching, Tim Gula almost has a zen-like quality to his approach, like he is in a state of meditation, kinda like he is going through a mantra. Would lie to know if he sells any of his drawings, especially these. Would like to buy if just for the relaxing almost calligraphic performance art that he performs and with the remnants of it left on the page.Like the embers of good wine.

Tim Gula is amazing and the model poses are really fluid. The thing that I thought it was really annoying was the camera shots and cuts. The editing really affected my focus, because when I was immersed on his process the focus changed, or the focus on the model changed.

Bear in mind that if you're a beginner, you'll need to decide the size of your figure first on the paper. That is, mark where the top of the head will be, then mark where the feet will be. Gula is a professional, so he instinctively feels the correct length of the limbs without having to measure.

I like Tim Gula.
Curious what he is drawing with. I can never get sharp lines like that with a charcoal pencil, which give me a blurry line.And hard charcoal gives such a light line but still blurry. Even a carbon pencil I find it difficult to get the sharp lines.And graphite does not give you those lovely blacks which I love Is it a graphite pencil? Is it a carbon pencil?

What kind of a paper is that? Whats the size, name of it? I see that paper in every art video, how can i buy it? Even A4 sketchpads are so expensive here.
Its propably newsprint. Cheap and thin. Ask in an art store for it!

I've noticed this with my own art. It depends on surface size I feel. But for the longest time my digital art looked like a two year regression as compared to my traditional art.

I don't know about you but life drawing isn't about copying the same exact pose but to capture the movement and structure.

It is exactly because he is using the side. Test yourself... lay the pencil side in the paper.. now..without rotation of the pencil, drag it to each and every direction possible...by ou will feel it.

I'm feeling he is drawing what he knows instead of drawing what he sees. The expression of the model is different than the expression on the drawing. The drawing seems more stiff. The model poses are great.
