- 1st May 2024 update to my AC 2 Litre restoration, featuring a long awaited arrival, plans for my engine, and electro-plating woes. Removal of horn button/indicator switch and wiring. As an added bonus, we take a ride in 2 different AC Bucklands.

Great to see the AC saloon. I was brought up with these ... my father owned two. The first was a 1950 two-door, registered FAP 950, which he owned approx. 1953 to 1958, in which he drove colossal mileages (200,000 miles plus, on two engines) on business trips, and which had a slightly breathed-on engine (long-reach Ace carbs, etc) - it was good for an indicated 90mph on the flat. It was the first car I drove on L-plates on the road. That one was followed by a 1954 four-door, reg. VPG 100, which didn't have the same spirit about it, somehow, and which he sold after a year or so - he then bought a brand new 1959 Volvo 122S! Bit of a contrast! I did check with the AC Owners Club many years back: they confirmed that VPG 100 was then known to them, but they had no record of the beloved FAP 950. Strangely I did actually see FAP being driven down the Earls Court Road when I was living in London, around 1966/7. I sprinted after it, hoping to catch up with it at the lights, but it escaped. Sad, really, but it looked and sounded thoroughly clapped out, and was clearly on its last legs. It was a great car ...
Many thanks for those anecdotes of AC motoring. I suspect FAP is probably no longer around. VPG 100 has disappeared from the radar, but hopefully survives. Those bigger carbs make a difference. The standard engine feels lively until it runs out of breath at higher revs, but the engine has some potential to uprate. Best wishes from Ian.
This was an interesting video. I was glad you finally received the new crankshaft for your engine. I was impressed by the detail of the improvements to your engine. Your attention to detail is equally impressive. Your soldering and plating looks great. Lastly, I enjoyed the drive alongside. You don't realize how lovely these cars are until you drive them by other newer indistinguishable cars. Good Luck with the block prep and look forward to your next video.
Thank you for all your kind compliments. The view over the bonnet is quite a contrast to the nothingness of modern car rides!
The new crankshaft looks good, the counterbalancing is an excellent idea and the original crank looks like a piece of bent wire in comparison! I'm really enjoying your films and the AC saloon has grown on me; I used to think they were a bit odd looking but now I think they are terrific.
That's the same phrase I've been using when talking about the cranks, "bent wire"! I'm pleased you are enjoying the videos.
Hi Ian, great video, good to see the progress you are making. I felt very honoured to see the new crankshaft when we popped in. As ever, in awe of your patience and attention to detail.🙂
Thanks Jonathan and it was really good to meet you after so long. Once the crankshaft is fully installed with the mods, the remaining engine work is mostly assembly.
Another fascinating video Ian. Cannot wait to see the next instalment.
I always look forward to, and very much enjoy your videos. The care and dedication you are putting into your car is impressive. Cheers from my shed in Iowa
Thanks. It's nice to have my efforts appreciated. One doesn't always know the work that goes into a restored car when you see it finished.
Lovely new crankshaft. Innovative ways of getting around the issues too.
Thank you. This project certainly keeps the brain stimulated!
Its been a wile but your new crank is a thing of beauty. Liked the comparison shot, and how much better designed and engined the new one is. Look forward to your next past.
Thanks Russell. Hopefully not too long before the next update.
A very interesting video Ian
Great video and content, really good.
Would you ask your friend what is the official colour code for primrose it looks very nice 👍
I've passed on your question and I'll get back to you later.
Hi James. The colour is Belco paints code: P0706974 (Primrose). I hope that helps. Best wishes from Ian.
