Wifi setup worked great for me, just like you described. My machine is brand new with firmware version 00.01.01 already installed. I've made no mods. The "damaged storage" message came up the moment I started up the android menu, before I changed any settings. Thanks a lot for this. (This scope ROCKS!!!)
Thanks for this. I got a brand new one and it had the 00.01.01 firmware installed. When I pressed windows+N it also said "Damaged Storage". Got the wifi working using this method.
You can connect without a USB hub. Plug in WiFi dongle and connect to your WiFi network. When prompted for password, unplug dongle and plug in keyboard. Type in password then select it and copy it. Unplug keyboard, plug in WiFi dongle, connect to your WiFi network. When prompted for password, paste the password you copied from clipboard. Connect!
Tip... Grab a piece of heat shrink that will fit over the head of the wifi dongle. Cut about 1.5". Add a little Super-Glue to the head of the dongle, insert it into the heat shrink and shrink it down. While the tube is still hot, flatten the free length of the tube with pliers, . Presto, you now have a pull tab for the dongle.
Just received mine firmware 01.01, bandwith and mem depth options installed then I plugged only the keyboard (without the WiFi dongle) the message “Damaged storaged” is already here (but I haven’t checked before bw&md options!). Then installed the dongle. All works perfectly. Thank you for your video.
DOOM and a Commodore 64 emulator on an oscilloscope!? What a time to be alive! Could you plug in a USB sound fob (together with a USB hub) and get sound? 🙂
I just got my Rigol DHO914 a few days ago and have it connected through my KVM switch for a keyboard - I can confirm I also get the 'Damaged Storage' message. Must just be how Rigol have set things up or imaged their software/firmware. This is before I've done anything interesting with it - it is like that out of the box. Firmware 00.01.02
Firstly, thanks again for a great video (I followed through your bandwidth upgrade video too). This one was very quick and easy. I purchased the TP-Link Wi-Fi adapter for just under £8 here in the UK. I can also confirm that I got the "damaged storage" message too. I did perform this process after running through your other upgrade video, rather than a totally clean virgin scope. So maybe the bandwidth upgrade has something to do with it, or maybe it always happens regardless. Anyways, I now have a 100Mhz scope with wifi thanks to you. Nice!
Sweet. Yeah it seems the damaged storage thing is there on all of them. I guess we weren't supposed to see that message so they didn't bother fixing the cause of it
Great info. By the way this also works flawlessly on a DHO1074. Corrects my lack of of Ethernet access. Works with the Version 3.6 from TP-Link $10.00 at Amazon.. Thanks
I got the "damaged storage" too. I think its from inserting a thumb drive earlier to update the OS. The 'scope didn't like the drive initially, but then magically was happy with it and updated from it. I don't have the 70 to 100MHz option at all, but measured a 250MHz signal direct from a signal generator (no probe used). It was down a bit in level.
Since the scope would be looking for a "mass storage" device when usb is plugged, the "damaged storage" might just be it found something other than a usb storage device. My best guess... GReat video, thanks for the info, did not know that the keyboards work... Thanks again
I have a brand new DHO804 just out of the box for a couple of days, no mods done, and I plugged in a wireless keyboard to do the Win-N key and the pull down notification also has "Damaged Storage" message. I guess it is in all of them
Thank you for your video. Can you please briefly tell us what particular launcher are you using and (assuming an adb working connection to the scope) how did you install it? Thank you.
I used Holo launcher. Downloaded the APK from apkpure and put it in the same folder as my adb tools. Then used adb install blahblah.apk After that I used a keyboard to access the notifications (windows+n) and changed the default launcher to Holo launcher
Important: 1. It's not Hot pluggable, you need to connect everything before boot. 2. Windows recognize my Wifi Dongle as RTL8188EU and not RTL8188EUS, still works. 3. Still works on Firmware Update v00.01.02.00.02 2023/12/28
I got it now, too but I was confused because it took several attempts (I doubted my crappy hub). But now I'm sure, that 1. was the reason, I even didn't think about that. Thanks!
"I suppose it could be worse, it could be based on Windows CE" Except these are comparative boot times: Android based Rigol DHO924S: 1m15s. Windows CE based Keysight MSOX3104T: 0m48s. Still not as good as my old VxWorks based Agilent 54642D, which boots in 0m04s, despite having a CRT to warm up. Under the hood it might boot faster than 0m04s: as it's all ready once the CRT comes to life.
This scope keeps getting better and better. Now I need to add a speaker so I can use it like a multmeter ohm continuity tester that will give me a beep or a range of beeps.
Could be worse, could be Win11.... *shudder*. Seriously though, very cool that Rigol is using Android OS for this line of oscilloscopes. Now I know I want to get one.
The Android menu isn't coming up on the RHO914. Alt+Tab brings up the "RIGOL" screen, which appears to be related to the launcher, the software crashes and restarts. I suppose RIGOL has blocked the feature and I'm pretty sure it's possible to configure it from command prompt, but I honestly don't get it why RIGOL don't add WiFi as an option in the settings menu to officially deliver this feature.
Screen brightness being not on max really is interesting. Isn't there a screen brightness control in the Rigol scope software? Why? Very stange... Is it a bad thing to turn the screen brightness up? Why isn't it on high by default?
Dear Mark, Your demonstration shows the WiFi ops perfectly, but there is a gap between Start and Finish. The TP-Link kit comes with the tiny dongle, a set of instructions and a CD-ROM disk. While it's wonderful to see the kit working, there is no continuity from opening the TP-Link package and typing in a UN/PW. There's hardly anywhere else in the world an actual Newbie can turn to to see the whole process and that leaves me with a bit of kit and no explanation other than "Voila!"
The CDROM and set of instructions are not of any use here. As I showed you just need to plug the dongle and keyboard into a USB hub and into the scope. Press Windows+N to bring up the notification bar, tap the wifi symbol and your select your network. Use the keyboard to type in your password and that's it. You can remove the hub and plug the wifi dongle straight into the scope. It will remember your password so there's no need repeat the process after a power cycle
Dear Mark, Following your exact instructions, the TP-Link dongle was connected to a 3.0 hub, where a usb keybd, the dongle, and a usb mouse shared. Bringing up the notification bar did not show any available WiFi networks. In fact, it was necessary to hunt around and to find a slider switch to even turn on the wireless function. Everything went downhill from there. Even the clock refused to accept the right Zone and time. When pulling the dongle out it was necessary to through a whole boatload of repeat steps to get back to where I was, minutes before. The 'scope simply said, "LAN disconnected." Rigol's tech spc Hugo said, "Rigol does not support WiFi, mice, keyboards or other peripherals. The usb jacks are there to simply transfer tabulated data out of the scope." I'm glad the TL-WN725N ver.3.6 wasn't too expensive. Neither was the 3.0 hub, so casting all adrift at the end of the afternoon prompted a succint "Goom Bye."
I tried this, and it only occasionally seems to recognize the WiFi dongle (I'm using the dongle from the Amazon link), most times, it doesn't give LAN Disconnected, no IP is configured, and if I try to turn on WiFi using the keyboard, it turns on for a split second and immediately turns off.
I don't remember the exact steps, but it involves using ADB to push the .apk file to one of the folders on the scope. Then access the android settings on the scope and change the default launcher to the new one
If You want sound on Android device, You can always connect many DAC-s with USB port. I have couple different DAC-s and all of them works out-of-the-box on Android and (no surprise) on Linux. Including smallest one for newest cellphones with USB-C, but in this case, You will need an adapter to USB-C to USB-A.
This works just fine, with one exception. I have to have the hub plugged in for the dongle to work. If I plug it directly into the front USB port it does nothing. If I use the dongle then it works just fine. Anyone have any thoughts? I know plugging some USB devices into my computer in different USB ports they load differently. Mine also came up with damaged memory, brand new out of the box .
I tried two different dongles and both are not working (reboot with dongle does not help). they keyboard is working on the hub without issues. anyone knows if this hack is still possible?
I did this after doing the 70-to-100 MHz bandwidth hack using your other video. I am running Firmware 00.01.01. Yes, I get the same Damaged Storage error message. Note that after WIFI is up and working and I have the scope screen displayed in a web browser on my computer, I see a red dot on the Rigol cog (bottom left corner), and clicking that then asks me: "Upgrade system firmware? DHO800_DHO900_Update.GEL" Not sure if I should do that or not with all these hacks in place. Thoughts?
If you update the firmware you will lose the upgrades. There is a new way to do it with fw 1.02, details are in the eevblog thread linked in the video description
@@TheRetroChannel Thank you. Your link leads to Fungus' post on page 18, but there are now 103 pages. Later on that same page (18) Fungus says "The updates don't change the android system, only the contents of the /rigol folder." But I guess that doesn't apply because you informed me there's a different method required. Not sure I want to read through the remaining pages of that thread, as that would take a couple days. But perhaps the bigger problem is this. I have no idea what version firmware will be installed. It only says "DHO800_DHO900_Update.GEL" will be installed. It could be some new firmware that no trick or technique will work to re-enable the hacks. I am content to use Firmware 00.01.01, but that red notification dot bothers me. No way to get rid of that except perhaps to yank out the WIFI USB dongle, but that makes no practical sense. Anyway, if you have further thoughts in light of this, I would love to hear them.
Question. Have you noticed any RF noise from the WiFi adapter getting into the scope channels? I installed the same wifi adapter on a Rigol DHO924S scope and see noise. The noise appears mostly on Channel 1 and only when using Remote Control feature via WiFi (there's no noise when connecting via Ethernet). A link to a video showing the noise problem is posted below. It's appears to be a WiFi proximity issue, since the noise goes away if I move the adapter further away using a usb hub. th-cam.com/video/S-S1dmi4XLQ/w-d-xo.html

Cool! That's exactly what I need! Thanks for sharing. Is it possible to configure the WiFi credentials of the connector using a PC?
Hi, there is also a tp-link bluetooth usb adapter. Can you try to connect bluetooth headphones and keyboard to the oscilloscope?
Does the Sigrok/PulseView apk work on the oscilloscope? and that can be analyzed directly on the oscilloscope?
Might be able to use a USB sound card. There is a was to enable those on Android.
Honestly could be useful for scope functionality for hearing demodulated signals and stuff.
@Aeduo Try using a USB to headphone adapter. Got to have headphones plugged into it for it to work though.
Great suggestion guys. Keep them coming because this is exactly what I was looking for.
