  • There aren't many circuits in the UK that I haven't visited, but Mallory Park was one of them. In this video we visit the track for the first time and spend a day getting used to it in the SW20 MR2, on what I thought was a Toyota only trackday.

    In my personal and likely wrong opinion, the Garmin is gonna have some slight issues with 2 corners at Mallory Park. Gerards and the Hairpin. Both have got multiple lines that kinda work, I think theres more of a correct answer to Gerards than the Hairpin but still not 100% and come race day you can use a lot of those lines to set up an overtake anyway, particularly the hairpin with its banking (don't listen to the 'you can't overtake around mallory' meme, thats a skill issue sorry). Maybe the Garmin is trying to get you to turn in later for the slingshot you get on the inside turning out of the hairpin, or its thinking the painted wall is the kerb (dunno if its done off GPS?). That's not to say what you're doing was wrong, the one at 25:05 was probably as good as you'll get on that line. It's always a bit funny being told to turn in later at Mallory though because it rarely looks like you can, but I've always thought the speed is to be gained through doing that at the hairpin and the elbow. At least the gnarly bump into Gerards isn't as bad anymore. That used to be the MR2 killer back in the day

    Really liked Mallory too. It’s a shame there’s not more racing there.

    For rwd, I've found a later turn in for hairpin helps gain a slingshot effect on the exit.
    Similarly for Gerards, you can turn in later than you think, and get on the throttle more constant throughout the bend and faster onto back straight. It had been resurfaced since I last raced there though... Awesome little track though 🏁

    I raced KTM 660s at Mallory many years ago, Gerard’s entry was flat out which was an incredible feeling. Bike’s get a couple of chicanes added, one after Gerard’s and one after the hairpin.

    Raced there for the first time myself this year, didn't think I'd enjoy it, but ended up loving it. Great place to spend a weekend.

    That house on the outside of the hairpin was up for sale many years ago which meant whoever bought it got free viewing every car and bike meet. The only trouble being that the local NIMBYs constantly complained about the noise so meetings were restricted to just a handful per season.

    That Garmin is sweet - didn't know it could cheer you on like that. I suspect it's suffering in the hairpin because either the wall is skewing the GPS accuracy slightly, or, it doesn't know the wall exists, and if you apexed like you would if it was a kerb you'd have no wing mirrors, or scrape the back of the car which would be further in than the front in such a tight corner.

    I at was Mallory yesterday in my mates r8 V8. Was having exact same quandary over gears for turn 1, settled on holding 4th so I didn't have to change up over the little crest on the exit.

    Run wide and get a tight turn in there for making the straight longer, more speed into the first bend🤷🏻‍♂️

    *Now then Dan! I think Mallory was the first track I did with my old E21 BMW race car. M42/1.8 twin cam and as light as I could make it. I loved the track and was there as part of a Practical Performance Car magazine event. It's a bit narrow in places but still great fun and pretty technical. You'll love Knockhill when you get there. Anyway, thanks for the videos as ever and good luck. Hopefully I can join Only Dans again soon too! Mark ETA - Have you ever tried running ATF in the gearbox instead of the OE spec oil? Worked well in my old Getrag so might be worth trying?*

    I'm wondering if the Garmin is trying to find a new optimal line via slingshot late turn-late apex approach as opposed to a wall hugging mid apex, seemed to be struggling to decide what the best option was

  • @danielgreen4213
    @danielgreen4213 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Your not hitting the apex in the last tight right hander hair pin! You are hugging the inside curb on the left to much! You need to go deeper almost a V line break deeper into the corner don't hug the inside curb in the right take a late apex. Your coming in and hugging the curb far to early so you need more steering lock for longer and your not able to get on the power as early I could draw this on a bit of Paper in seconds but hard to explain.. TRY it if you understand what I'm trying to say. Of course in a race if your defending then it can be different but then you will find people set you up for the switch back on the line I just said above.. it's a interesting corner!

    Devils elbow is insane on a bike, you have the extra chicane just before hand which means you're basically flat out through the elbow, with the compression is can get proper spicy
    P.s I think the Garmin was getting confused with the wall on the hairpin, you obviously can't get the wheels as close to the apex as you'd like cos of the wall?? God knows

    I agree with the garmin, but a corner is a whole lot more than ‘hit the apex’ and following/achieving that 1 instruction, might not get you onto the fastest line. Can you alter the settings for 2 tips per corner?
    Personally looking at that corner, it’s all about fastest exit to maximise the following straight ( which is what I think the garmin is trying to tell you- but as it only gives 1 point you can get fixated on that 1 point)
    So for me, it’s late braking, sharp late turn in, so at the apex you’re immediately opening the steering so you can accelerate quicker (friction circle and all that jazz)
    (Does the optimal lap time feature have an ideal line overlay? So you could actually see the line the garmin thinks is fastest and therefore have better idea of what the tips are trying to tell you?)
    Great driving and vid as usual mate, keep on pushing 😎👍
    Ps- I love how ‘technical tracks’ always seem to be just 1 massive corner 😂

    I can't tell if the Garmin's trying to get you on the chicane line for the hairpin where you want to hit the red section of wall to not run so wide on exit to line up for the chicane which is just used for bikes

    Great track, deserves more car meetings or it'll shut down. Sadly the current crop of racing drivers have been there that little in recent years that most dont know how to drive it too. Lot of silly rumours about the place too like they cant host weekenders and that they dont host car racing. Its all total bollocks

    • @adematthewsracing

      Track days they most often let you use them. On a race day it's a definite no. The helmet isn't put in for it's certification tests with a camera attached so it's not allowed for those reasons. Track days you don't need a certified helmet.

    It's funny, as someone who's done track days in the States where they allow live timing and helmet cams, it baffles me as to why the UK is so restrictive against it. I mean, I get why (insurance), but I definitely don't agree with that as there's not really any statistics that show helmet cams and live timing leads to a higher chance of wrecking or injury, just anecdotal hearsay. We dont see a higher rate of crashes in the States compared to the UK, so it seems like one of those dumb rules thats just been around so long no one questions why, or if it's even necessary anymore.

    • @aarongarter3917
      @aarongarter3917 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's something they'll legalise once theyve figured out a way to make money off it

    • @stirado26
      @stirado26 ปีที่แล้ว

      @aarongarter3917 here's the thing that bugs me too. There are minimal to no "live timing" track days even available on TDO websites. So if you even wanted to do that, you'd have to spend thousands to rent out the track for a day, which realistically isn't possible for the vast majority of people, all because of the misguided idea that live timing "promotes competition."

    I'd say that hairpin is too tight for the garmin to function properly.
    For one thing; on a corner that tight it's not possible for both the front wheels and the rear wheels to apex perfectly - if you hit the perfect apex with the front wheels, the rear wheels would cut the corner and clip the wall. I'm not convinced the garmin is sophisticated enough to take all that into account.
