    I just drove through Kansas on my way from California to Arkansas. The rest stops were immaculate and the roads were well maintained. Went through Colorado and the potholes were the worst I’ve ever seen in my life. As soon as we crossed the border into Kansas the roads were great.

      Potholes here in Colorado are awful and everywhere.

    • @davidbandler
      @davidbandler ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You didn't pay attention to the gas & sales taxes you paid in Kansas. That's why. Here in Kansas, we point out that we pay our taxes and have nice roads, but the states surrounding us - Colorado, Missouri, etc. all hardly pay taxes and can't fix potholes or fund their schools.

    • @yeboscrebo4451
      @yeboscrebo4451 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@davidbandler I would assume it has more to do with the weather and elevation changes in Colorado that wreak havoc on the roads. Higher taxes doesn’t necessarily equate to better quality services - come to California to see your tax dollars completely wasted and squandered by corruption

    • @davidbandler
      @davidbandler ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@yeboscrebo4451 Missouri is another good example of people who don't pay taxes and horrible roads, unaccredited school districts, and high crime. Kansas has the same climate-induced road problems as Colorado, the frost-freeze cycle, the destruction from road salts & plowing, etc. The difference is (you'll see this if you drive I-70 through both states), is that Kansas is always repaving I-70 (and other paved roads.) Taxes = maintenance and repairs.

    • @yeboscrebo4451
      @yeboscrebo4451 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davidbandler California is an example of high taxes and horrible roads. Kansas does not have the same climate induced road problems as Colorado, the same elevation changes, or the same freeze cycles - not even close. Colorado and Kansas have wildly different rainfall, snowfall and freezing averages. And again, taxes does not always equal maintenance and repairs. Sometimes taxes equals misappropriated wastefulness, collectivist schemes and corruption. Ever heard of the Grace commission? You’d be shocked to find out what some taxes are actually allotted for.

    You pronounced Dighton correctly. That's my dad's hometown, that was where he had his 1st teaching job, so I lived there a yr. Just west of Dighton is a sm place, not really a town, but it's on the map it's AMY, KS. My dad was born there. His grandfather, who was in the Civil War, homesteaded that area and was a successful wheat farmer. He actually proved up his claim, which only 40% of the Homesteaders did. Amy was named after my dad's aunt. It's a small place on the map. but, I am proud of it as it is my family's heritage. How many American families has their own personal little dot on the map that is there because of the significance of their own family? I display wheat in my house in remembrance of my great-grandfather James Richard Bruner.

    • @robinandjenithhoover2927
      @robinandjenithhoover2927 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Estelle, my dad was also from Dighton so I'm quite familiar with it (at least up til 10-15 years ago, as I don't get out there as often as when I was a child -- fond memories!). My great-grandparents had a farm 4 miles south of town, where my grandparents also lived and my dad and his 3 sisters and brother were born. His brother (my uncle) took over the farm when Grandpa "retired" from it and he (Grandpa) and my grandmother moved into town. Today my uncle's grandson still lives on and runs the farm. I love that it's still in the family through all these generations. Oh... and I do know of Amy! Drove through it a few times years ago, probably in the '60s.

But I am proud of Amy as it's my ancestral home. It was named after my grandma's sister. Our family homestead was in the family as far as 30 yrs. ago, but, am not sure now. Our families had to have know each other. My maiden name is Smith. They have been in that area over 150 yrs.

    In 1965, when I was 15 years old, my Dad, mom, younger sister and I were on vacation going from Fresno, California to the Springfield, MO area to visit relatives. We went the Northern route through Colorada then Kansas. We left Denver late at night and must have gone on that same route you just did. Drove for a long time without seeing another vehicle or noticing in towns except one. It was dark.

    One thing I learned from my car sales days, heh, is that a fuel light means you have about 10 percent or at least a gallon left in your tank. So if you know your car's mpg you have a general idea of how many miles you have left to get to the nearest gas station. Also I just LOVE following along on Adam's road trips with a map! I drove through Kansas a few weeks ago, basically from Kansas City to Dodge City before crossing the Oklahoma panhandle on my way to New Mexico. The eastern two-thirds of the state are rolling hills, but the western one-third is flat as can be. You always know when another town is coming up as every town has its own set of silos which you can see from miles away. Urban boundry was a term I spotted as well. Where I come from, we call that city limit.

    A magnificent tower that offered stunning views all the way to Pikes Peak. From here, Ripley's Believe it or Not reported in 1933, you could see six states.

    Adam, These small town videos are 100% fantastic. I don't mean to be disrespectful but those main street stores seem fairly vacant. It's probably been many years since they were full of owners and customers. My dad's small town was quite vibrant in the early 1980s and now the grocery store and cafe have been vacant for decades. It's funny, people like me that live in big cities can't imagine what it would be like to live in a town with a few hundred residents and small town people wonder how we can live in a concrete jungle. THANKS AGAIN ADAM !!!

      It's because those towns shifted their population and business centers to be along I-70 when it was built, and their old downtowns tend to be along old Highway 40 (which runs roughly parallel to I-70 a few miles away) where he is showing. Yea their old downtowns are empty-ish, but the towns are far from dead. Everything has just relocated away from what he's showing.

      @@davidbandler Thanks for that info, David. I've heard some things about how new highways and interstates alter small towns but never realized the severity. Good to hear you say those small towns are far from dead. I can't imagine how quiet and tranquil it must be for those living in such small towns, while some of us have many thousands of people just living within one square mile.

      @@rootzandbranches4656 Kansas is one of the best states to see the effect; in the middle of Kansas, everything along Highway 40 moved onto I-70. In the South, it was Route 66, then Highway 50, but then I-40 was routed way South in Oklahoma (so West of Wichita is slowly dying.) Even in the Eastern half up to when I-35 was put in, the towns shifted from KC Road to Highway 50/56/69 to I-35. Of course, land is wide, open, & plentiful out here, and so the cities & metros sprawl and shift with no need to urbanize. I've read stories that as far back as the 1800s in Kansas, people would literally move entire towns miles in a better direction. It seemed to be not uncommon. There are small towns depopulating, but they'll never really die because something has to exist to support all the farmers that are essential to the US food supply.

    That funny shaped roof gas station in Brewster used to be a interstate house restaurant. They had a gas station and restaurant on the other side. Not much information on them. They had a location in Salina Kansas Wilson Kansas and Brewster. This was back in the 70-80s. Very good food I remember. Also there was a stuckeys pecan shop across from the gas station in Brewster. It burnt down many years ago and is just now a 24/7 station card only. Safe travels!

      Hey Adam, can you find a thing called a human being that is actually outdoors, either in main street, a park, or outside some kind of industrial area. Not only you, but the other vloggers just drive through dead and deserted towns. I think in all the hours I have spent watching these vlogs, have seen maybe three people and that not an exaggeration. Love your work though!

    The videos remind me of our country's boom era after WW2. The USA exploded with economic growth after the war, peaked then went into a decline due to it's exorbitant growth and constant turnover of improvements, inventions precipitating wealth, prosperity, population shift and leaving behind the old for the new. It leaves you lamenting what was, the history and the thousands of people that moved on and out. The ghost towns were bustling, busy centers of human activity, commerce and trade and sustained these pocket towns until eventually big corporations bought out, consolidated and sadly, necessarily, created the collapse these old past wonderful towns of Americana. Sometimes progress is appearing cruel, and many people today don't even bother to stop and read the erected plaques, brass plates attached to bridges, or the lonely community designated markers noting of an antiquity past. People lived their entire lives here and there. Raised families, shared birthdays and holidays and celebrated their quaint towns with decorations and even parades, picnics and county fairs. Everything happens in the blink of an eye in 2023 and I suppose some said that when Henry Ford rolled out the Model T's back in the day. Life happens too fast for some and for others not quick enough and that's evolution. So, I'll keep checking in to TheDailyWoo from time to time and be escorted again through your bitter sweet travels of a remarkable past.
