I have Robert Johnson's entire catalog on cassette tapes. Yeah, I said it: CASSETTE TAPES! That's right, I'm an old guy. When my middle son was an infant with a painful hernia waiting in the hospital for his operation, I got him to sleep singing Robert Johnson's Love In Vain while rocking him back and forth gently. He grew up fascinated by trains.
I remember in the 70's, in England, listening to all of this great "new" music, being sung and played by British bands and artists, thinking this is new and fantastic. Many years later I realised it wasn't. Just an new take on old blues songs. Probably to avoid copyright infringements and the need to pay royalties. I then decided to delve into the music of the original artists only to discover that it was even better. Street credibility 100%. It's great to see and hear artists giving their rendition of these great songs as they were meant to be played and often wonder how great it would be if artists like Robert Johnson were able to record now. So here we are almost a century later enjoying this music.
Thank you. Superb. Your outdoor recordings work extra well, avoiding unwanted sound bouncing off wall, floor and ceiling surfaces. I've heard nothing that comes aurally closer to the original Robert Johnson recordings.
Sounds awesome. I can listen to this over and over and over again. Beautiful played. I feel the blues all the way deep in my soul. Yeah, keep up the great awesome performance. Thank you. 😊
So good. I love listening to some down home gutbucket blues and you know how to capture it. You are the real deal and I glad I found your channel. Thanks.
Hey Mr. Phillips. I know it aint news - but you are one bad mother hush your mouth on both singing and playing. Good God almighty Im so glad theres guys like you still playing like the music just came out of the oven and isnt 70 years old. You take some of those old rattle trap blues songs and make them into something fresh without missing a beat. Hats off to you - (and Roy Harper - if you do that one...)
That was a fantastic set Edward! Listening to all of those RJ tunes, it's amazing how many famous bands have done versions of so many of them! 👍👍🎸🎸👏👏🎤🎤
More, more. I love all your stuff, man. Your skill and knowledge of these old legends just blows my mind. Your vids are the best thing on TH-cam. You put my blues on hold when I watch you.
I discovered Robert Johnson in college doing a research paper on the Blues. I was really stunned by the sounds; it was the hardest, deepest most authentic music I've ever heard. I understand why he was so influential. But on this particular song, it does have a cringe moment, "I'm gonna beat my woman, till I get satisfied." I don't think I could sing that. I understand, its just a song, and a sentiment, not a proscription. I've never wanted to beat a woman; Pepper spray them, maybe o.k., but I've never done that. I couldn't bring myself to sing those lyrics in public.
Man your a bad man, I've known this for quite some time. Couple years, but new eyes listening this mornin... Absolutely brilliant, checking not some but all boxes sir. Tip of my best hat. Ty
Beautiful. I knew the 'me and the devil' version that Gill Scott Heron did which was a little surreal, great though. This is really good, great playing and great voice my friend! a natural. Is that a Martin 000-28? or a D-28 on 'me and the devil'? I can't tell. 👍👍👍
Edward - thank you for all these wonderful videos. I've picked up a lot from watching. Sorry it took me so long to subscribe and tip you. One question if you please - who makes the wood body resonator you play? Thank you in advance.
just sent you a few bucks man, but it was so fucking annoying to sign into paypal they forced me to add a phone number before i could even log in. bullshit. anyway, keep up the good work.
That is the closest I will ever get to seeing Robert Johnson live in concert. So good!

The guy is great, so authentic sounding!! 👍🏽👍🏻🕊️🎸
A lot of old blues songs have throw away, generic lyrics, but not Robert Johnson’s. His lyrics are pure poetry.
Sublime half hour of the delta blues.. it doesn’t get any better than this. 👌
This is the best Robert Johnson feel I've heard from bluesman not named, Robert Johnson.
Agree
Thank you. Superb. Your outdoor recordings work extra well, avoiding unwanted sound bouncing off wall, floor and ceiling surfaces. I've heard nothing that comes aurally closer to the original Robert Johnson recordings.

Fascinated by the parlour guitar with the stars etc on every fret. Ed introduces it as 20th century. What is it? Does it have a story?
Супер!!!

Why does the RJ style sound so different from all the other blues masters?
