Bobby Jones flying thru the air dunking that’s that ABA blood 🩸 in him .
His ABA footage showed me that he was very athletic I just found out that Jones was a high jump champion while in the state of North Carolina.
@oskar89 Agreed. For all those videos people have made about others disrespecting Bird and regretting it, they forgot that there were games that he got schooled. Notice he did not even remotely try to stop Dawkins on the inside.
RIP Chocolate Thunder
Broke two back boards!!
@@hruodvan7081 I purchased his throwback jersey.
Bobby Jones and Chocolate Thunder, still sticking them under!
Bobby Jones put Larry Bird on a poster! That was nasty
He tried to put Bird in a coffin
@@RLSmith-jt8qj Bobby Jones had the flu cause that dunk wat sick
RL Smith Jones should have asked Bird Hey Larry how did it feel to see a WHITE GUY WHO COULD JUMP!!!!!
Greg Carroll Somebody else said that dunk was funniest thing that he ever saw.I responded ask Bird if he thought it was funny!!!!
Giving a new meaning to 'french lick'
Great stuff, Darryl(still think he’s the GOAT dunker at the center spot) and Bobby were absolutely no joke when it came to attacking the rim! Those late-70’s/early-80’s 76ers are some of the most athletic squads ever.
Remind of what The Clippers had in the back court. Nice to see where the idea came from.
Sadly, Dawkins could not stay out of foul trouble. Over all he was a good defender and excellent shot blocker. But those fouls were his Achilles Heel. He was a strong player and not someone easily muscled around.
Jones posterizing Bird was classic. I watched that game when it aired.
Bobby Jones is one of the greatest players no one ever talks about.
Very underrated. Outstanding all-around player. He's in the HoF (appropriately so).
His work ethic was unmatched
Agreed
@coffeeinthemorning Julius Erving found out his skills as a defender in the ABA!!!!
Bobby Jones was a bad man. My second favorite player behind Dr. J.
Bobby on Bird crime.. I forgot about that dunk. Love me some BOBBY Jones. The height, the power, the majesty of that play.
Bird will never forget!!!!!!
I was fortunate enough to run into Daryl a couple times. He lived in the same city as me. He was always very personable and warm. Always had time to talk with people. He’s missed a lot
Yep I used to go watch the Sixers when they practiced at Ursinus during the preseason. They let you watch from the bleachers as long as you kept quiet. After a practice we were shooting hoops outside when Dawkins came by and grabbed the ball and dunked it. Damn that dude was huge, he grinned the whole time. Lloyd Free shot hoops with us once too, another cool guy.
I loved watching NBA games in the 70’s & 80’s.
I’ve said many times on these internet post... Darryl Dawkins is one of greatest in game dunker in NBA history!
FACTS!
Shaq
def the most underrated center of all times imho. most centers are not 'take a dribble and dunk on the fly'...he could. lets not forget about those poor backboards
@@TheOttercreek Vince Carter...
DR.J.Erving the best.
Bobby Jones was the og white chocolate
Well one of them
Billy Cunningham before him was an OG white chocolate too, he actually played at the Ruckers
Ironically they both were Tar Heels!!!
@@sirjer73 Dean Smith knows GREAT talent
That belongs to Pistol Pete⛹♂️
Billy C was another high flyer and white chocolate electrifyer, the Sixer predecessing him basically.
Pete Maravich too. Three fantastic players, loads of highlights film.
Still have a piece of the back board that Dawkins broke at the Spectrum.
People always talk about the Lakers and Celtics in the 80$ but the Sixers from 81 to 83 were just as good as those 2 teams.
@Fred Wright Until they did!
@Fred Wright yes they did. They swept the Lakers four games straight in either 83 or 84.
From 77-83 the Sixers got to 4 NBA Finals. People don't know how far back Boston vs. Philly goes back in the NBA.
Better.
The rivalry between the Sixers and Celtics in my opinion is the greatest sports rivalry of the 1980's. Those games were so intense.
Bobby Jones was the man!
People forget how good a player he was.
Great defender, one of UNC's best!
Bird got a good whiff of Bobby's jewels.
Totally underrated, such a class act!
@Fred Wright pause
Wow, M Cheeks, J Erving, B Jones, D Dawkins. That's a team right there.
It's a shame people forget about these two, especially Bobby Jones
These were some great battles. Both Philly and Boston had a squad. Must see TV!!!
Agreed. We would play ball in the street, go inside and watch them on TV, go outside at halftime and play more ball, return inside to watch the second half, and then go back outside after the TV game ended.
@@straycatttt I bet your would say Toney, after letting one fly, didn't you straycatttt? lol Hitting shot, after shot...damn Boston Strangler. Hated him, he was so good. If only injuries didn't end his career.
Bobby Jones is one of my top 7 favorite players all time. And I'm a die-hard Lakers fan...
I thought U were head of the satan knight's war council!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Means you must be lying
Been a Lakers fan since '82 myself GL😉
GL Imagine Jones playing with Magic his offensive numbers would have been off the chart.
@@qwammienewsome1357 I can be a gang leader and a basketball fan, can't I? Or do I have to make you join my gang too? 😡🐕
Now That's Basketball Back In The Day!!
When you saw Darryl Dawkins & Bobby Jones dunking like that, you know what's missing in today's nba.
Today's star players often dunk in international opened lane, with lazy defense and shortys surrounded the rim.
Oldies Generation dunking with legitiment dribbling with the ball 2 steps dunks, takes stronger core-muscle + all around lower-body strength to do so! Today's stars often running without the ball used acceleration to gain momentum on dunking attempts , they often take 3~4 cheat steps in doing so. Lacking core-muscle strength is the main difference separates Older Generation Dunkers than today's big showoff dunkers.
Enough with the generational hate stuff. It’s lazy and it’s unnecessary
This is basketball. Today's players say those old guys had second jobs and stuff , yeah they have plumbers and electricians in the NBA Hall of Fame lol Johnny Unitus worked at a steel plant , one of the greatest football players ever worked at a steel mill. Let it sink in
Great, Great rivalry. I was a Boston fan and those Celtic-Sixers games! You could feel the tension through those lousy tv's we had then!
Mind you, Dawk, and Jones were doing this against *one of the NBA's greatest defensive teams of All Time.*
@Fred Wright They were dunking on NBA Champions.
Always loved Chocolate Thunder growing up. Monster dunks and no showboating afterwards. He was a man.
That Bobby Jones dunk over Bird should always be on Sixers '80's highlights. Bobby Jones was sixth man but everyone knew he was truly starter caliber. Could hit the medium range jumper, rebounded and could posterize you too.
Bird contemplating his place among players in the NBA after that dunk!!!!!!
1:18 How the hell is this dunk NOT on every classic highlight reel? Dude has his whole sack in Larry Bird's face.
That's some Chambers and Dr J stuff, damn, oh my, oh man
Dusk too bad Jones was not the type of person who was going to be a trash talking player he should have asked Bird Hey Larry how did it feel to see A WHITE GUY who could jump"!!!!!
Loved Bobby Jones. He may have looked like the school librarian but his hoop game had mad Swag and effectiveness.
Bird got POSTERIZED! GO Celtics
Bobby Jones and Bird is crazy white highlight material, with Chocolate Thunder stacked on top too then... wow.
I never knew Bobby killed Larry like that. Rumor has it they outlined Birds body in chalk after that dunk.
😂😂😂
Props to the Ref for the TD spike "And 1" call on Jones' Posterization of Bird
Bobby Jones was so under rated.............possibly the best 6th man ever. those were some great philly teams of the early 80's....
RIP Great Daryl Dawkins, sorry you're getting your due posthumously! I love your creativity of naming your Slams. Viewers, who don't know should look them up for an added treat. Bobby Jones, extremely underrated and All NBA Defensive 1st team!!
I've never heard of Bobby Jones before but I really like the way he ran the floor on the fast break!
Bobby Jones & Kurt Rambis were notorious for running the floor and finishing as well as cleaning up around the glass with "put backs"!
And don't forget Tom Chambers.
Jones was an excellent defensive player and made several All-NBA Defensive 1st Teams. Also made the HOF.
@@Mike-kv5pl Bobby Jones is in the HOF? Wow, I'm even more ashamed I didnt know who he was.... glad he put that size and athleticism to good use.
Those early 80's Sixers teams were so much fun to watch - they had everything. They had the acrobatic genius of the Dr., the power of Darryl (and later Moses), the tenacity of Bobby, the assassin in Toney, the steadying hand of Cheeks.
What I love to see, Sixers of the 80's rollin'.
Bobby Jones was, and still is the greatest lock down defensive forward who has ever played the game of basketball!!
He's the 2nd best defensive forward. 1st is Andrei Kirilenko, AK47 :)
I don't care what nobody says, I'm a brother and Bobby Jones was one of the BADDEST WHITE DUDES to ever play the game❗!❗!❗
He always played solid "D"! Took on the toughest assignments. He'd take yo stuff out the air! Pin you on the glass, and would take off and dunk on you if you were in his lane.
He was one of the toughest competitors even going back to the last days of the ABA for those that remember.
They called him the "Minister Of Defense" AND FOR GOOD REASON...
One of the Unsung Heroes on the Sixers back in the day who should have gotten alot more credit......
Also one of the nicest guys off the court you'd ever want to meet....
Total *Class Act*.....
Dunking in lay up motion is super natural.. the 80s
When i was growing up nba was on tv only on Sundays after football season. I remember watching Dawkins, Kareem, Tree Rollins biting Danny Ainge......great memories
That was the only time I could watch it since my family at that time didn't have cable. Still the NBA in those days was awesome.
Bobby Jones for his height and position could cover the court equal or better than any player I have ever seen play professionaly, watch how he peels off after the rebound or score and jets up the court always looking to give his gaurds a target or to support the man with the ball drawing defenders for others to scrore. If only his outside jumper was better he'd be up there with the best of em.
I was born and raised in Philly and am an ex Sixer season ticket holder so I've seen many games in person since 76', Bobby Jones DID have an outside jumper but his role was primarily on the defensive end of the floor.
First time I hear and see Bobby Jones. Wow Im very impressed
1981 ECF was one of the greatest series ever
My favorite is that, The Sixers blew a 3-1 lead
@@channelofthepeople-98
You would have to mention that. 😞
@coffeeinthemorning games 5,6, and 7.Travesty.
@coffeeinthemorning As opposed to basketball.Back when I played a lot,I used to ask the question:Are we playing make it-take it,or basketball?
@@channelofthepeople-98 I’m still disappointed
that was an insane rivalry for many years - almost as good as boston v la
He was a pure dunker!!!Rip champ
The Ref on that Bobby Jones vs Bird dunk got me cracking up.
I think these were the old stiff rims where dunking was painful after so many dunks.
Yep
And they were changed right the next season for the ones that are used in todays game
@@REALGOLD20 yup.. now we have flashy dunkers. I wanna see Vince put down in the old style rim.
Yes - man my wrist used to hurt so bad after throwing down 5 or 6.
I just can’t drink like that any more
@@brianfergus839 tell me about it! Bruises all over the wrists for a whole week
R.I.P Chocolate Thunder...I didn't realize how Nasty that dunk by Bobby Jones on Bird was...That was Wicked
The Great Bobby Jones one of the Most Under rated of all time UOAT!!!!
Bobby J and DD flying high.... Tough team... We need the Sixers to play like this...
1st time hearing of Bobby Jones, that white brother can jump!!!!
Bobby Jones was a solid quantity, no real weaknesses in his game. The Sixers didn't rely on him heavily to score but whatever he did do, he did it right. He was a Greyhound on fast breaks too.
Jones was a GREYHOUND on that break... th-cam.com/video/jL84GjUm8Ko/w-d-xo.htmlsi=BCLerAmkST5cMdwx
Wow, epic nasty dunkfest. DD is a monster.
It's scary to think that in a game with Dr. J, that this whole clip showed Jones & Dawkins dunking all over the place. That's how nasty that whole game must've been!!!!
J and Bobby probably the two best one footed dunkers in the league, and Dawkins probably the best two footed dunker in the league.
BIG Darryl Dawkins. What a monster. That 2nd dunk was the best
Bobby Jonss dunk on Bird was extreme.
This is an old school attitude by bird and the chief, challenging every shot - even if it is not a good idea
Philadelphia sports were awesome in the early 80s!
I was a teenager in Philly back then. I never realized how good we had it at the time.
Damn this so good i could almost cry
Bobby Jones was before my time, but I knew he was good and a legend. What I didn’t know was that he had this level of ups.
DAMN never seen this b4,Great vid.
Dawkins and Jones both are like "ef" it I'm Dunkin, or gett'n fouled. Good stuff.
bobby jones sure could take it to the hoop beautiful basketball
that bobby jones dunk on bird though
Bobby Jones was nice back in the day. He definitely was underrated.
When Chocolate Thunder took a step and one bounce towards the goal, there was NOBODY that was going to stop him. Damn that brings back some great memories
This Sixers team,. was so much fun to watch.
RIP DARRYL. You were my inspiration growing up.
I remember watching this game live. When Bobby Jones dunked over Bird (at about 1:20), I just went screaming through the house like a fool! That was one of the best dunks I'd ever seen! Apparently, the ref who called the blocking foul shared my sentiments! I loved Bobby Jones.
This was the game when Cedric maxwell shoves a fan, an old man....and doesn’t even get kicked out of the game lol
80s basketball 👍
That Sixer's team was one of the most athletic ever. Jones was a great defender and teammate. And a nice guy.
Bobby was a BEAST in his OWN right.
Philly was my team back in the day! Hope some youngsters see some real basketball
Tell'em again Fella❗❗❗✔💯◾
@Fred Wright Win or lose, that was real ball is what I'm saying. They let them play, not this no touch NBA now.
I got a chance to meet Chocolate Thunder Dawkins at old Reunion Arena back in the early eighty's, the kid was huge!
These dunks are so meaty! Love it!
Bobby Jones!...LEGEND
Us old timers remember Bobby had some serious hops back in the day. We called 'em "ABA hops."
I ain't know Bobby Jones was taking lift off like that! 😂 Bro poster'd tf outta Bird
Jones was a 2 time state HJ champion. Dude could fly.
So this is NBA Jam 1981
Fantastic Darryl... Fantastic Bobby... 👏👏👏👏👏💕💕💕
LOVE IT!!!!
"Chocolate Thunder⚡" and "The Secretary of Defense" - two reasons why I'll forever be a Sixers fan! 🙋🏾♂️🏀⛹🏾♂️
This is a vintage crazy basketball
Nobody finished a fast-break better than Bobby Jones.
Back when the game was played by real men and was an absolute thrill to watch.
Agree! I don't watch anymore feels so anorganic now a days.
Why make hateful comments like this? Maybe you’ve just become old and extremely bitter?
@@dantegood2195 Not hateful. No presence of an inside game, flopping at an all time high and all they want to do is shoot 3's...boring as hell...yawn.
_"The Secretary of Defense"_ Bobby Jones! One of my favorite players of all time... and Julius "the Doctor" Erving's VERY favorite!!
Dawkins, Shaq and Barkley--some of the most brutal dunkers ever as far as putting weight into the dunks.
You left out Wilkins and Kemp
Classic. Dunk highlights and dr j spectating !
Mane that had to be a game
I knew Darryl Dawkins kicked butt like that on the court, but I never knew Bobby Jones "who was mainly known for his great defense", had hops like that, WOW :)
Wow. Who is Bobby Jones??? He’s going in!!!
They would kill in this era!!!!
Turned the arena into a poster making factory that night 🤾🏾♂️
1:25 some Celtics fan was pissed 😂
The Smash Brothers! My squad since day 1. R.I.P. Dawk R.I.P. Moses Malone 💔🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Bobby Jones should be in the Hall of Fame.
He is.
It’s next to impossible to see ball like this nowadays. ☹️
The referee's call on the foul was the best highlight
Wow you're right how did I miss that ref did a karate kick in at Judo chop
LEGENDARY.
Before there was Shaq there was Chocolate Thinder. Great person. Rip
B. Jones one of the illest defenders to ever play the game.
Bobby Jones showed me that he was athletic when he blocked a shot from Dr.J while playing in The ABA.
They didn't call him the "Minister Of Defense" for nothing....
@@cwvos I think Jones could have been a great offensive player if he was fed the ball more if he played with a JOHN STOCKTON type point guard his offensive numbers would have been off the charts.
@@cwvos He was the top defense player in the ABA.
@@dwightlove3704
DL I agree, but Mo Cheeks was certainly good enough!
That's what I appreciated about Jones the most. He didn't need the ball to be effective.
When you have Doc, Dawkins, Toney who were all offensive threats, especially Doc and DD in the post, there's only one basketball to go around. Stock wouldn't have did much better.
Stock's primary guy was Malone. Hornecik was his guy to but Malone was who Stock got most of his assists from. He was the primary.
Jones was the perfect compliment! He played "D", mostly taking the toughest assignments, rebounded, filled the lane on breaks and took up a lot of slack for the others.
He was one of my favorite players back in the day.....
The type of attitude Bobby Jones had, he could have played for any team in the league.....
@@cwvos I agree but I still think he could have been a great offensive player with his obvious athleticism as you can plainly see.He and David Thompson could have been one of the top duo's in the NBA during his days in Denver.
Dr. Dunkenstein... Big D... Legend. Rest in the Hoop!
