You are not in any way too confident, your filming channel has been great through the whole life of the channel. Although you have improved, you have never been terrible.
Professeur Bumbo!!! As a programmer, I agree. When I started out, if there were problems, I would just work around it. Now, problems give me brain haemorrhages, to the point where I will scrap code and start from scratch only to get the exact same problem, when I could have used an array, or a function of some kind.
Yep, programming is massively effected by this. I remember how easy I found it in the start, then as I started complicating things my brain began to explode!
gracious god array is the god for death of beginners . . . i've done programming since high school(4 years ago) but still i still don't know how to do arrays.
So glad to see you cover this topic and create an educational video. Dunning Kruger is a major topic in the Skeptical movement. I would love to see you start covering more topics under this area. Logical Fallacies, crazy ways the brain misbehaves, how memory is not very reliable, etc. So much to cover and you are a great speaker - I think you'd do a good job.
It also has a corollary for the reverse. Sometimes, something comes so easily to a person that they think everyone must have similar ability, thus selling themselves short.
Thank you I needed this. I'm trying be a computer programmer and I did a basic coding program and I was actually really good it it and was feeling really confident that I would be able to do computer programming. However I was shown some real actual code on unity and holy shit I lost all confidence on my abilities. The difference is literally night and day. This will give me just the little extra boost I needed to pursue my happiness and I thank you for that Mumbo.
I'm a story teller (that's my way of saying film maker) and I've been struggling with this exact thing and your films have been huge inspirations to me. This video reseller helped push me over the edge to not think about every little detail so much and to just take an idea and run with it. Thanks Mumbo!
What a great video, Mumbo! Starting university, I can especially relate to what you are saying. Sometimes it can get too stressful and I'm unsure if I'm cut out for anything really. But thinking about it with a different mentality certainly helps. Keep up the filming, you are improving every video!
The good thing is that it allies to almost every topic you need to learn. I felt the same way as I begaan to model on PC 2 years ago. Experience ans patience is what you need to get better, which you can only acchieve through practice.
OMG, that is so accurate! I recognize myself so much, I hope that the confidence in the end will strike me soon! Been terribly unconfident about my music lately, I learned so much stuff about all sorts of things which made me realize how terrible my songs were. But with all that new knowledge I hopefully hit the confidence line soon!! Thanks for this great video Mumbo, you just motivated me to keep doing what I do and never give up because of confident reasons!! Never thought there would be a name for this, honestly, I never thought someone else had the same problems.
Mumbo, I really like this video on the Dunning Kruger Effect. I think it was well done as well as informative and educational. I was convinced when I started watching TH-cam videos that this was something that I could certainly do. After spending days trying to edit together a video based on scripting I had produced I discovered it is way harder than I originally estimated. I wanted another video on The Dunning Kruger Effect produced by Psych2Go and I think your video is better. You do a better job of explaining the effect and you also produce a better quality video. I was also surprised when you were talking about the cameras, filming, and editing at all the effect and concepts that I knew nothing about. Kinda made me realize how much I don’t know on the subject. Anyway, congratulations on your videos and the quality you have achieved. I have been watching since you were in Hermitcraft season 2 and have watched as you grow and expand over the years and seems to have outstripped your fellow hermits in growth of watchers and subscribers. I hope you don’t outgrow Hermitcraft any time soon, but it does beg the question as to why you have reached over a million subscribers during the same time that other hermits reached 100,000. You must be doing something right.
Great advice that’s applicable to pretty much any aspect of life. Also, I’m always stunned by the quality of your work. It’d be really fun to see a behind the scenes/workflow video of yours (unless you’ve already done one that I missed).
I really like these older video's, because in these video's you are newer and less experienced and I like to see someone learning and telling what he learns.
I love that you are one of the few people on the internet that show what it’s like to not be confident in something you love. Just do what you love and stop what everyone thinks about you :)
This actually really explains my experience on TH-cam. I started off thinking I was a great editor, comedian, etc. But now that I've hit a wall I've almost stopped making videos entirely, and I've scrapped dozens and dozens of videos because, to me, they never seemed good enough. Guess it's time to stop listening to myself, too. Thanks Oli.
I watch a lot of TH-cam and think the quality of your filming is far superior to most. There is an artistic film makers feel to some of them, so rather than doubting yourself, just keep doing what you do well.
So this is your first blog video that I've actually seen of yours. I started watching you when season 5 of hermitcraft came started. Never seen anything before except like a few redstone videos that I still don't understand. I've seen every episode of season 5 and always look forward to the next one. I finally decided to check out your filming channel and I know that I've missed out. This actually helped me to realize that I need to work at something to get better at it. Thank you for that. I promise to watch your filming channel with as much gusto as I do your Hermitcraft episodes!!! Keep up the good work!
I've just started doing woodworking and I feel really confident, and I'm starting to learn about diferent types of saw blades and drill bits, and as I learn more, I realize my abilities aren't as great as I first thought. It's good to know that this has an actual name. Thanks mumbo. ;)
I'm way behind on my filming channel viewing obviously but I'm glad for that because this is exactly what I needed to see and hear right now. Again Mumbo, thank you sir for being so awesome!!!
I love how you made a blog... about making blogs! Seriously though, it's great that you're teaching your viewers about experience; That's my number one go-to for getting better at anything. I know so many young people wanting to start at the top (confidence) when I know that those will fail until they start from the bottom and work their way up (EXPERIENCE). I think we are somewhat alike in that respect. Good video though! See you 'round!
You have to fall down to be able to rise up Mumbo and every misstake, failure or difficulty you stumble across is success. Because in every failure lies experience and experience leads to success. I think your videos are great and I enjoy every minute spendt watching them! I really enjoyed the frozen lake video you did back in the days because I love the feeling of winter and you did a great job capturing that feeling.
THIS HELPS SO MUCH, THANK YOU. ive been working on upping the production value of my FPV videos and ive been sitting on 3 weeks of footage without editing any of it cause it just didnt feel good enough. and ive been wondering what was happening to the confidence i had in the beginning. well now im motivated again, even if it doesnt turn into my best video im still going to use it as practice.
See, I have a hobby of animating and this basically sums it all up. I do admit I am getting better at it, but I'm kind of stuck in that middle zone where I don't like what I'm making and I just have no motivation to do it. This video has taught me something though, or more encouraged me, to keep doing it. Thanks Mumbo, you've helped me by explaining this to me. Mumbo I love your filming channel and your minecraft channel you are actually the one who inspired me to do filming myself keep on the good work mumbo! ❤️
Mumbo, this was actually *really* good. I'd love to see more experimentation videos similar to this. This was not only interesting, but inspiring! I've recently gotten into music production and been trying to learn a ton of stuff at once, like how to play a guitar, piano, sing and work both an acoustic DAW *and* sequencer DAW, and this seems to be very accurate to how I've been feeling. lol (Plus I can relate! lol) This was lovely, I really hope to see more stuff like this!

Hey Mumbo! I haven't been keeping up on your vlogs too well for the last while, so while I'm not sure how far back it was, I appreciate you releasing videos at the aspect ratio used by the Samsung S8, it's a rare treat to enjoy a video across the full screen without it seeming squished. ^^
This is true with biking, I started in April, and was confident....but on the actual road, my confidence dropped considerably......whereas now, I'm even more confident on my bike than ever, even overtaking people more and going faster/leaning further over going around corners
Amazing, Is it possible to have more of these, like probably a video on comparing your old self and new self? more like a reacting to old videos I guess?
I've been doing some amateur filming for the past couple of years, and I'm now getting into colour grading. I still use After Effects instead of Premiere (I know I know, I should switch), but I don't know which effects in After Effects are good for colour grading. Some of them make the colours more saturated, some control brightness and contrast, and others just add a faint solid colour to change the feel of the shot. But how do _I_ choose which colours pop and which don't? For example, a very popular colour scheme is to bring out the oranges and teals. How do I even go about doing that?
well Mumbo can you do a series where you make videos showing (teaching) how to set all the things you said. lighting , log ,.. etc! i would really love to learn from you!
Could you make a tutorial, how you colorgrade (or how you achieve your look) your Videos using Davinchi Resolve Because I have a few problems with grading!
I take photography class in school, and I almost failed the last test about aperture and ISO and all those stuff. And now you spoke about them and I just wanted to close the video. But I didn't... because you make things look much more interesting than how my teacher makes them.
You have been watching too much Wes Anderson dude.
Mumbo Jumbo Can you and Mumbo vlogs make a collab? Please it will be awesome
Lord Cloud lol
Lord Cloud lolll
Yeah make a cinematic Minecraft video
Mumbo Jumbo Verry good video mumbo. It was informatical and good footage (hope this is writen like this)
Greetings from Germany^^
My wife just said “that’s not Mumbo is it? He doesn’t have a mustache. What’s with the mustache?” Lol 😂
You are not in any way too confident, your filming channel has been great through the whole life of the channel. Although you have improved, you have never been terrible.
MC Pug Buddies, u r right!
Nobody knows you better than yourself
Heyy Vsauce, Mumbo here!
Niko Makela -my- everyone's thoughts exactly
Nomekop 777 Uhhhhhh what
And today we are going to be discussing the Dunning Kruger effect. But what _is_ an effect? And how much does it weigh?
Professeur Bumbo!!!
As a programmer, I agree. When I started out, if there were problems, I would just work around it. Now, problems give me brain haemorrhages, to the point where I will scrap code and start from scratch only to get the exact same problem, when I could have used an array, or a function of some kind.

I'm pretty sure you spoke around 10 words of actual English in this video
Haha, that may be true.
SpartanMatty117 Haha I totally agree
If you know nothing about filmography, sure.
Jace Rausch I don’t mean to be rude but filmography is a different language mate
I must be multilingual because I understood all of it.
I shall pray for my fallen brother Oli aka mumbo

I appreciate the "yellow" theme in this video.

Glad you enjoyed!

Is mumbo left handed or am I seeing things because I never knew he was
TommyGames He is he said that in his Mumbo Spoon video (I think thats how it was called)
Yes he is left handed. In his past videos he has complained how hard it is to be left handed in a world meant for right handed people :)
yeah you see it right but tbh left handiness is really a struggle
Which video i really wanna see that one
Yeh. I think he said it once
I don't usually venture onto this channel but as a musician this makes absolutely perfect sense.
I really liked your explanation of this. Loved the yellow too. 😀
I really like these older video's, because in these video's you are newer and less experienced and I like to see someone learning and telling what he learns.

Hey Mumbo! I didn't know your a left-hander!
Wow Oli, this is amazing! It relates so much to my school life, realising that there’s a lot more than I need to learn to actually become a smart guy
So this is your first blog video that I've actually seen of yours. I started watching you when season 5 of hermitcraft came started. Never seen anything before except like a few redstone videos that I still don't understand. I've seen every episode of season 5 and always look forward to the next one. *That inspired me a lot to do more skateboarding. Thx mumbo. You are such a wonderful person!*
I feel like this about art every day
Thank you for the 21:9 aspect ratio. I appreciate it on my ultrawide monitor.
Haven't watched it yet, but looks great thus far
From the 19th century I see?
I thought you did a great job on your campervan movie. I really enjoyed it!
This is really helpful! I'm trying to get into the business of interior design as a undergrad and literally just today I looked at how many jobs are around me and... well there is zero. No idea how im going to fix that situation but this inspired me to try and figure it out!
Mumbo can you do a tutorial on how to use Adobe After Effects, since you said that you use Ae to edit your videos?
Matt the Minecraftian Ae is more of a special effects program. If you want to make cuts/put in music/slow motion/time lapses, use Premier Pro, or just Premier if you don't want to pay
The effect is one thing but sometimes the most important part though is simply about the personality or personalities of the content and the level of enjoyment they get from producing. The fine tuning just adds to the final result. Keep up the good work!
My Dunning Kruger effect is sorta sloping down right now with my video editing. Thank you so much Mumbo for showing me there's a way up and out that comes with time and knowledge.

Mumbo! Thanks for letting the rest of us know how much effort can go into a filming video! I don't really know any of those filming words besides 'camera' and 'video,' and honestly wouldn't know the video difference between your high tech cameras and my little digital point-and-shoot (or whatever it is) (besides the fact that your drones can fly). I just enjoy the scenery you film and your (mis)adventures!
Thanks Mumbo, I really needed a message like that. I don't feel confident in some things I do, i guess i just need to practice and gain some experience.
One of the best film makers I know, keep it going!
Perfect timing for this video and some really helpful advice!
This is so true Mumbo! This somewhat relates to how I feel about my channel, and my whole computer knowledge (i guess) btw i think youre doing a great job w/ BOTH channels! Keep up the great work and keep on improving!
MUMBO IS LEFT HANDED!!!!!
This was such a good video. I loved the music. And it truly spoke to where I am right now. I'm currently trying to enter the workforce here in California, and I've been super unsuccessful. Every job interview I've set up has turned me down, so needless to say I've been very discouraged for the past few months. This video helped me see that I'm just at the bottom of that slope in the graph, and, if I keep working at it, and keep trying to get out applications, it can only go up from here. Thank you Mumbo for improving my outlook. You are such an inspiration. Keep chasing your dreams. :)
That game me a headache but surely learnt something today. Thanks a lot Mumbo. Love your films. Keep it up 😉
4:10 I really liked how Mumbo paused for a second before placing the forth exclamation point. #Composition. :D
I too am having this problem. I am currently in learning to become an engineer. In the beginning I thought that by the end of college I would be able to solve any problem the world could throw at me. Now I'm not so confident anymore, at the moment I'm even worrying if i chose the right carrier. This video explained to me that this is relatively normal to happen to you.
I loved his video so much please make more, it was amazing and I'd love to hear what you have to say about more things in this style
This video helped a lot today, thanks Mumbo! I feel quite refreshed now.
This was the perfect video for my current situation. Thanks sir Mumbo
Hi bumbo I want you to know that you are awesome
Much appreciated!
Pierce - BANG SCIENCE He really, really is. Not just as a great person, but also as an entertainer, filmmaker, and inspiration all around!
Mumbo I love your filming channel and your minecraft channel you are actually the one who inspired me to do filming myself keep on the good work mumbo! ❤️
I forgot how good you have gotten with this format and channel.
That was very cool and I have to say you are extremely talented and I actually can't wait to see what you do next time , keep up the amazing work
Mumbo, this was actually *really* good.
I'd love to see more experimentation videos similar to this.
This was not only interesting, but inspiring!
I've recently gotten into music production and been trying to learn a ton of stuff at once, like how to play a guitar, piano, sing and work both an acoustic DAW *and* sequencer DAW, and this seems to be very accurate to how I've been feeling. lol
(Plus I can relate! lol)
This was lovely, I really hope to see more stuff like this!
great advice bud. keep up the good work, I'm loving both channels!
I needed that... ive been feeling very non-confident in my youtube abilitys lately... lets hope its really better than i feel...
1:48 Can you explain about all of the camera options that you talked about for a beginner?
Best vlog ever from you mumbo
Can't tell you how much I can relate to this when it comes to language learning.
Love the yellow theme for the positive vibe. Good choice
Awesome film mumbo!!!!!! Love your content!! Really professional
This explains my drop off of making content. Makes me want to try again knowing why my confidence/motivation went down.
I love your positive take on it. And yeah we've all been there.
I totally get this, ive been into music production lately, and my first ID was terrible if I listen it back now, I am 1 remix and 2 IDs further and I feel like I was over confident at the time, I am learnong a lot about mixing everyday and just keep on enjoying it!
I'd like to know about your experiences with hobbies that you had/have and what you think of them now
I didn't know mumbo was lefty
This is pretty interesting, really nice job. It's very well put together and fun to watch

Yeah, that's pretty much how I feel about pretty much everything hahaha !
I struggle a lot because I think about too much stuff I'm not experienced about, so I just give up and publish a thing I'm not happy with. But I know that.
And you know too, and a lot of people too.
I really liked your video because it remembers me, and how I think.
Keep up the good work Mumbo, I really like your films ! You're doing an awesome work !
Hey Mumbo! I haven't been keeping up on your vlogs too well for the last while, so while I'm not sure how far back it was, I appreciate you releasing videos at the aspect ratio used by the Samsung S8, it's a rare treat to enjoy a video across the full screen without it seeming squished. ^^

Great video, what about using kind of fast mode while writing so that there is no cut in between ?
Amazing, Is it possible to have more of these, like probably a video on comparing your old self and new self? more like a reacting to old videos I guess?
Brilliant! Thanks for sharing this!
Can you please show the cameras you use and say the pros and cons of them?
a masterpiece
I've been doing some amateur filming for the past couple of years, and I'm now getting into colour grading. I still use After Effects instead of Premiere (I know I know, I should switch), but I don't know which effects in After Effects are good for colour grading. Some of them make the colours more saturated, some control brightness and contrast, and others just add a faint solid colour to change the feel of the shot. But how do _I_ choose which colours pop and which don't? For example, a very popular colour scheme is to bring out the oranges and teals. How do I even go about doing that?
Omg i completely forgot that you were left handed, I'm so used to hanging around right handed bois (including myself)
well Mumbo can you do a series where you make videos showing (teaching) how to set all the things you said. lighting , log ,.. etc! i would really love to learn from you!
Could you make a tutorial, how you colorgrade (or how you achieve your look) your Videos using Davinchi Resolve
Because I have a few problems with grading!
I’m spooped I’m just a starter but that’s cool that makes me more confident!!
how do you have time to do all this and hermicraft and redstone videos
I take photography class in school, and I almost failed the last test about aperture and ISO and all those stuff. And now you spoke about them and I just wanted to close the video.
But I didn't... because you make things look much more interesting than how my teacher makes them.
