It seems character development is sort of a nuisance for modern movie fans. It’s almost a separate category, a slow burn. But it’s just generational. For me, slow burn films like Alien, The Thing and The exorcist are easily at the top of the horror movie genre.

If you know the history of this movie you’d know most critics didn’t like it primarily bc of the gore. Most all of those critics have since changed their reviews and admitted they misinterpreted the movie the first time they watched it. The Thing appears in the top 5 to 10 of many all time horror lists.

John Carpenter's The Thing (1982) is my favorite horror movie, edging out Alien. The build up of suspense and paranoia throughout the film is unsurpassed. The open ending has had people arguing about which character was taken over by The Thing for over forty years.
This was the apex of practical effects; CGI took many years to even approach it.

Hi Miss Biss!🙂It is true the general pacing of a film 41 years ago was normally slower. However, for 1982 the visual effects (that's what it was called back then) were considered ahead of its time. While principal photography only took 3 months in Alaska, the visual effects took over 1 year for Rob Bottin to complete. He ended up hospitalized for exhaustion, double pneumonia, and a bleeding ulcer from working day and night. Legendary Effects Master Stan Winston was called in to finish the dog kennel scene. How much he contributed to this has been debated. But he also helped out to a lesser degree with other scenes. Nice honest reactions to this 80's horror film/mystery, Bisscute!!!🎬👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽P.S. - Chicken soup broth twice a day is very good for a cold.🙂

This movie got trashed at the box office because ET came out a week before, and everyone had a positive perspective on aliens. 10 years later it was reevaluated and became one of the most loved horror movies of all time. It inspired other CGI effects for movies like An American Werewolf in London. The director of The Thing also directed Halloween.

Absolutely gobsmacked by the review. It's nothing to do with a millennial pespective, it's a universally loved, respected and appreciated movie. It's absolutely top tier filmmaking, acting and writing, with so many layers. You dont have to be from a certain generation to appreciate quality. Some of my favourite films were made well before I was born. This whole 'It's old so people my age won't appreciate it' just isnt true. We're not born in a vacuum. We're constantly surrounded by media from all sorts of timeframes.

The Thing didn't fake being sick, the person it assimilated (Norris) had a pre-existing heart condition. Like I said, assimilation. It takes EVERYTHING, from intelligence to how healthy you were at the time. It's a hive mind that can split itself and pretend. Also McCready gets a decent understanding of this when he decides to do his own blood test, every tiny little part of it is _The Thing,_ down to the blood cells themselves. It's actually a pretty terrifyingly advanced creature. And if the spaceship crash is any sign of how dangerous it is, it MIGHT have already done this to another species in the cosmos which is why it's crashing in the opening.

  • @Filboid2000

In 2011 Hollywood made a prequel to this movie called "The Thing" (how original!). It stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton. The basic premise is essentially the Swedish ("They're Norwegian, MacReady.") discovery of the space ship and the thing. You might find it interesting. Anyway . . . .
Honesty is the best policy: if you don't like it, nobody should you for it. After all, it appears that it wasn't a movie you picked, it was picked for you - hell, you were paid to watch this movie. When I watch a movie and tell someone else about it, I classify it into three categories: 1) don't waste your time; 2) it's worth watching once but after that, I don't know; and 3) definitely one to go out and buy.

Just a quick explanation of how the _The Thing_ works. When they say (and I don't know why the script choice to use this word, because I KNEW it would confuse the average watcher, but whatever) "imitation" they really mean _assimilation._ Assimilation means you become part of _it._ So it would 100% have ALL your memories and personality (even pre-existing health conditions of the body) because it assimilated your brain too. Now what isn't clear is if the people that are assimilated, die or become part of it's sort of hivemind and forced to watch (and feel, even more horrific is the case) themselves be puppeteered by the thing. The Thing LITEREALLY becomes you after eating you from the inside... And not in the fun way lol.

    • @redemptusrenatus5336
      @redemptusrenatus5336 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

I think they may have chosen "imitate" over "assimilate" in the thinking that the average movie-goer wouldn't understand what "assimilate" meant. There have been other movies, the names of which escape me now, but in the director's comments they've discussed just such changes for that specific reason; the directory didn't always agree but sometimes the studio demanded it and thus changes are brought in which end up confusing people who weren't so stupid as the studio thought they were in the first place.

  • @DanielRamosMilitaryWiz
    @DanielRamosMilitaryWiz ปีที่แล้ว +3

Unfortunately a memory test wouldn’t be very effective because when the Thing assimilates a new life-form, it takes over and copies every aspect of the host, including the brain. This means it can absorb the memories and personalities of its victims. This is seen throughout the film as The Thing imitates not only the physical appearance, but also the habits and mannerisms of its host, allowing it to blend in, and choose when to attack. Since it’s probably already assimilated countless life-forms on other worlds, that would make it not only highly intelligent, but also very elusive.

  • @SoshiMECH

It's interesting seeing the different perspective. Younger people look at an old movie like this and don't like it because it's not slick and full of CGI like a modern movie and they think the practical effects look fake but for someone like me when I look at a modern move with all the CGI and slick style, I think that looks fake and the slick stye has made all modern movies look the same and very formulaic. Old movies feel more real and unique to me and I think part of the reason is because back then actors were dealing with practical effects and doing real stunts which made it all feel more real for them and the audience. With modern movies I often feel a disconnection that comes from an overuse of CGI. To be completely honest the early reactions to "The Thing" wern't very positive but over time it’s become a classic and a much more appreciated movie. It might have been ahead of it’s time. It’s not a perfect movie, some of the acting comes across as wooden but I think that added to the feel of the movie. I would say, 9 out of 10 time I would rather watch a movie that was released 20+ years ago over a movie that was released in the last 20 years.

It's not about taking offense but about looking at the film as objectively as possible. I understand that subjectively it may seem to have a slow pace and that you are used to faster action, but objectively slow are the films of Bela Tarr or Tarkovsky. Here the action moves at a natural pace and there are virtually no unnecessary scenes. Each one is either an exposition on a person's character or adding a brick to the intrigue. As for the special effects, you only have to pay attention to the year of production to be clear that no CGI is involved. These are all practical effects that Rob Bottin worked on 7 days a week, continuously for an entire year. This makes everything look natural and gross, which can't be said of the full of CGI version from 2011. You're entitled to your own opinion, of course, but within this film genre, the film deserves to be called a classic.

    - The remake of The Blob with Shawnee Smith and Kevin Dillon
    - Arachnophobia with Jeff Daniels and John Goodman
    - An American Werewolf in London, brilliant film and bloody good time
    - The Jerk, a sequel to Carpenter's The Thing with even more gore
    - Tremors is a fun time, with Kevin Bacon. It's basically JAWS inspired by an SNL sketch about a land shark.
    - JAWS! My favorite movie of all time.
    - The first remake (1978 iirc) of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. So creepy and paranoia inducing. But maybe too slow for Biss.
    - They Live. Masterpiece of metaphorical horror/sci-fi with Rowdy Roddy Piper and the longest fight sequence on film. Another Carpenter classic.

I remember watching this movie when I was just an aspiring film student.
By the end of it, I thought it was mostly 'ok'. But for a reason I couldn't understand at the time, the movie stuck with me. For example, 3 weeks after watching it I was having random thoughts about the movie and specific frames that were both beautiful and symbolic.
I remember thinking "what the hell?" because we are meant to forget unremarkable experiences. That made me realize that the movie had something special, something that I didn't pick up consciously but my unconscious did.
Perhaps it wasn't unremarkable but terribly bad that it stuck with me?
I watched it again like 2 monrhs later and I instantly figured it out; The Thing it's like a trance, it traps the viewers with stunning visual and audio design from the beginning. Even the opening shot I think it's brilliant in its simplicity.
It's one of the few movies that make me feel like I'm there, so far from civilization. Surrounded by the snow and the deadly cold temperatures. It's suffocating.
I believe this movie ranks amongst one of the best in the history of cinema. The artistry and craftsmanship it's impeccable. I cannot put into words the way it makes me feel.
I can't blame you for not liking it because I had similar thoughts the first time I watched it.
Maybe one day you'll change your mind. Or maybe not, which it's completely valid. I still think it's an amazing film to think about, to analize and dissect.

Cabin Fever = a condition of slowly losing your mind, going "stir crazy" from being cooped up for too long.
Speaking of which, that's a couple of movies you can check :
[2003-SEP-12] CABIN FEVER = Horror movie about a deadly virus (no supernatural scares, winky winky ;-) )
[1980-DEC-12] STIR CRAZY = Comedy about two friends who are wrongly convicted on a bank robbery due to mistaken identity (the real crooks impersonated them) and circumstantial "evidence". The pair must figure out how to survive inside until they can prove their innocence. (I think you will REALLY enjoy it!)
And if you enjoy Stir Crazy, you may also enjoy the same pair in another comedy :
[1989-MAY-12] SEE NO EVIL HEAR NO EVIL = Two friends - one blind, one deaf - are "witnesses" to a crime, which once again, they are presumed to have committed due to circumstances. However, rather than end up in jail, they set out to prove their innocence themselves.

Also they do succeed in killing the thing in the end. There's a alternate comic series where Childs and McCready are rescued, but the thing survives too and they go on missions tracking it & killing any remnants of it. So I like to imagine that in order for the thing to die, Childs and McCready have to also freeze to death. EVERYONE/THING dies. And don't feel too sad, freezing to death is literally THE MOST peaceful way to die.

Blair definitely touches his pencil eraser onto the Thing's remains at 13:07. 10s later, he's touching the eraser to his lower lip/chin. But even then, his flimsy latex/vinyl gloves barely go up his wrist, and that material breaks and tears extremely easily anyway, so probability he got physically contaminated by touch while rummaging around inside its innards is pretty significant.

I think that Mac realised that you probably can't affect a shapeshifter by shooting it. That's also probably why the Norwegians SEEMED to miss the 'dog'.
Someone left their 'dirty drawers' in the kitchen trash can BEFORE the Thing got to Bennings.
When Windows found Bennings he dropped keys on the floor.
The Thing DID go for the smartest one first: Blair.
Norris had a heart attack because he must have had a bad heart when the Thing imitated him.
Clarke was human, but MacReady killed him in self defence.
Blair must have been infected before he was isolated. THAT'S why he 'destroyed' the helicopter and communications.
Was Garry killed or infected when Blair 'grabbed' his face?
We never see Nauls die. We just assume it.
At the end, Mac's breath is visible because of the cold. Childs' breath isn't.
Mac gives Childs the bottle, but doesn't drink from it. Is it likely that he was carrying booze, or a molatov?

    • @eddhardy1054
      @eddhardy1054 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I agree with you totally about the dog-Thing probably being immune to bullets but I think Blair was still human when he destroyed the chopper, the tractor and the communications. If you listen to what he's saying he knows he can't trust anyone and that if the Thing gets to civilisation then humanity is doomed so he's just trying to isolate the camp and keep the Thing contained. Garry and Nauls were almost certainly absorbed off-screen and if you look very carefully you can see Childs breath at the end of the film...but even if you couldn't so what? 😉😊

@@21stcenturyhiphop Couple of questions. Firstly which producer (there were two)? Secondly If you follow the film closely (which I have over the last 35 odd years) it's far more likely that Palmer or Norris were infected first. As an added bonus if Blair was infected why would he/it smash up the chopper (his only means of escape at the time) and the communications room all the while ranting about how the rest of the team didn't know what was going on and about how the Thing (which according to you he was) wanted to absorb them and be like them? Wouldn't these action just give him/it away? It would be like Norman Bates dancing about infront of the police while yelling "arrest me, arrest me, I'm the psycho!" Your theory just doesn't make any sense 🤔

Technically all dogs are mutts, they’ve just been bred enough times between two different breeds that are also mutts to be labeled a “pure” breed. For example, a Great Dane is a mix between a mastiff and a grey hound. We’ve just selectively bred dogs for a very long time, and only consider certain aesthetics to be desirable. It’s the same with flowers, weeds are flowers, but we call the ones we like flowers, and the ones we don’t like are called weeds, even though they are the same.

Admitting to not having any patience for watching movies probably isn't going to win much sympathy. Whatever a movie has going for it, it's a trade-off for pay-offs. To get the tension and jump scares, there needs to be buildup. To get buildup there needs to be time with the characters and the problems or mysteries presented. Those all tend to be diffused the more that overblown CGi is used. And it is overused exactly because there are fewer practical or grounded artistic considerations when it's all "fix it in post." The less a thing hides in the shadows, the less tension or fear there is for anyone watching. It's all a balancing act. The movie may look dated in some or a lot of spots, but the EFX gloss isn't what should give a movie any weight, exactly because so much of it now is common and thoughtless or disposable.

No hard feelings. This is my favorite all-time movie. I think it might be possible that the fact you are familiar with the game Among Us and that it coming out relatively recently may have taken away some of the tension and paranoia that this movie originally imparted. I have always seen it as the ultimate combination of a monster movie and a mystery. And like most of the best mysteries it occurs in an isolated location where no new suspects can be introduced and no one can escape. I also really liked the fact that the director intentionally did rhe opposite of almost every other monster movie. Usually, you never get to see the monster fully until the very end of the film. In "The Thing" the first thing that you see at the beginning is the monster, running in an open snow field in clear sunlight.

    2. The ultimate hand grenade throwing FAIL 🙄🙄
    3. You have to realize that this movie came out long before CGI so there was some very creative practical effects goin' down here.
    4. Mac's not a murderer. Clark was attacking him with the scalpel. It was self defense.
    5. Of everything that went down the part that got me the most was when Blair was dragging Gary by the face.
    6. Their fate is left up to the audience. Maybe it's best they all die.

The "Husky" was half-wolf/half-Alaskan Malamute, so he actually was a mutt! 😄 The crew thought he was an excellent animal actor and as I viewer I certainly agree! Also, the rifleman in the chopper was firing at a moving target from a moving platform. Bear in mind that he also was a scientist, not a sharpshooter. A very well-armed bunch of researchers it seems, including the US camp where a flame thrower apparently was necessary equipment for Arctic research 🤔
Thanks for your honest opinion, although I think a 1 is a bit harsh. It's a bit sad that many people these days seem to have a problem with slow-paced films (and even slow-paced games), I don't think that's a particularly healthy trend. Regardless, I do prefer reactors that are honest instead of being sycophants, so thumbs up!
Edit: Oh, as for practical effects vs CGI, I'm in the camp halfway between those camps! 😁 I believe that practical effects enhanced with CGI is the way to go! There are some who are using this approach today, e.g. the excellent horror director Mike Flanagan.
