What an excellent result ! I agree with you about the importance of load-carrying on a bike. Having never seen the 350 Classic in the flesh I have always thought that any bags/panniers fitted on them stick out too far. I love your solution ! I had a '93 Bullet 500 and fitted fibreglass ("HD-esque!") panniers from Acrybre Mouldings (Weymouth?) and managed to fit them lower + further back than usual. Not only did this look much better but enabled me to keep them closer to the centreline of the bike. I wish Enfield explained why they made the metalwork around the rear shocks stick out so much compared to the original Bullets. It definitely causes problems for those of us who always fitted panniers/top boxes to our bikes.
Another great video , Glyn , Very ingenious idea too use those fittings for your new panniers , they look real cool & functional , but best of all they really suit the bike , love it 😀 👍 Thank you 😊
Excellent idea using the brass fixing . And thinking outside the box with using toilet pipe brackets. That's actually made me think how my rear rack plate is fitted. I used the plastic "C" snap on brackets, when I could use stainless 15mm toilet clamps. The bags look great and a nice compromise with darker colour straps.
I better take them for a good run to make sure they don't shake themselves to pieces first, just in case, I'll let you know if it does 👍 It's a bit of a rabbit hole once you start looking at the plumbing stuff!!
They look fantastic Glyn and I'm always in awe of your MacGyvering powers. I've had a similar experience to you with a couple of different old guys in random villages I was going through smiling and waving at me. These bikes really are joy magnets aren't they. I always have a little childish wry smile every time you say "Rusty Bertie" - it sounds a bit euphemistic......like a chocolate starfish 🤣
Well, you've ruined "Rusty Bertie" for me *forever*, it could have been in the scene from "The 40 year old Virgin" 🤪 Something equally childish coming next time I think too, so look out. Always play dead when approached, works for me 👻
Can now be classified as the toilet bag’s😂. Very cool idea,Glyn. Works and blends in very well. Lovely backdrop scenery too. Beautiful 😊 Hopefully you’re doing well.😊
haha I'll never get away from that now 🤪 It might not work so well if the rest of the bike didn't look a bit like that too, although they also make them in chromed brass. Something else to polish too! All good here, hope your gardens coming on
Another cracking video Glyn, I think the panniers look great as you say they balance the look of the bike nicely and fit the theme a treat, good find, love the toilet fitting’s 😂 All the best buddy 👍
Great stuff Glynn, I did similar with 15mm Munzen rings and screwed rod to stabilize/tie-down a cylinderical shaped chopper bag on a Sissy bar for a trip from London to Prague 2018 on my H-D. Glad you kept the solo seat it gives the bike it's character whilst showing off the rear mudguard, in my humble opinion when you tried the Bullet 2-up seat the bike lost something. I've bought lots of gear off of Motea (not for my RE yet) over the past couple of years and in general its usually good quality and a fairly fast delivery. Another enjoyable video sir.
ahh I'm glad I'm not the first and there's some kind of precedent for it 👍 Maybe I could add some more for various odds and ends. Rusty is certainly a lot more handsome with the single seat for sure, the rear mudguard is beautiful 🙏 I like the Motea stuff, key is to keep it under £135 or so or you get import fees on it
@@GlynOC Yes I got stung for a seat, think it was round about £200 and had to pay a tax levy at my local off-licence that also doubled as a collection point
When I first saw the finished bike I thought it’s the best looking classic I’ve ever seen, bar that horrible piece of scaffolding around the engine. In the beginning of this video I thought those bags will outshine the crash bar but in the end they look rather good. Far nicer than I expected! Admittedly I prefer the full length RE bags, but these messenger bags do give this bike a well rounded look, nicely done with the brass fittings!
All items are subject to continuous evaluation and improvement and can change at any time 🤪 It's good to have an open mind, but not so open that your brains fall out as they say 😊 Thanks for watching and commenting, Glyn
Loved that! Great idea to use those brass fittings, where there's a will....... I'm in the process of sorting out my day to day luggage, I want to keep the hard box on the right side and I want to fit a rhinowalk soft pannier on the left, I bought the L shaped pannier racks from Hitchcocks but they are not quite right so I'm thinking of selling and I think the pannier rails you have will do a better job. Pity you can't buy just one! Keep the videos coming !!!!
Thanks Brian, I better give them a good go over a rough road to make sure it doesn't fall apart like a bag of old spanners but am hopeful. There's always something getting in the way of cunning plans isn't there? Would your plastic box fit to the different rail so you could use both? Come to that, would a second hard box fit onto that rail on the left??
@@GlynOC I think you could fit a second hard box with the rails you have not the ones I bought but it would open from the front, worth a thought though!
Perfect bags , Glyn. The first thing I did on mine was to put panniers on - the Hepco-Becker ones available over here (without paying heavy taxes since Brexit for any kind of parts from GB to Europe...)
I have used metal "P Clips" in the past on fibreglass boxes. You can also get them covered with black plastic. Initially I obsessively checked them incase they started cracking but eventually my paranoia subsided. They never let me down + were checked only when I occasionally washed the bike.
The aesthetic is strong here. I love finding functional fittings in essential materials which are nicer than typical plastic devices. WI haven't seen your rebuild videos for a while, it's come on very well with the patina finish. What's the story behind the holes in the mudguard (I do like them)?
There'll be another one coming in the winter when it's too nasty to go out much, something more extreme than these two for sure 👍 I like the holes and both the last two bikes have them to some extent, kind of an industrial / aviation / vintage look that I like. Thanks for watching and coming to comment👍
Ah Glyn, very nice, but you must fit some rubber/plastic spacer? between the pannier tube and the brass pipe bracket, don't wont any damage on those expensive pannier tubes!
Hi Glynn , just wanted to say how fantastic your opening sequence photography and editing is... mine look pathetic in comparison 😂... the whole channel is so well put together 😊
ahh it's self indulgent faff Dave, I almost deleted it this morning before uploading🤪 If I was more gutsy, Id get straight to the point like you! Wait till it's got a sat nav next 🤪
Look loads better than the RE ones definitely look more robust looking and with waterproof inners look better on to, Much better fixing solution. surprised to see the classic seat still on 😳 look great on to, just one small thing I think I would have put something a little rigid in the bag then the bolts, something like the side of a 5lt windscreen wash canister just to take some of the strain off the material when loaded. …. Just my thought. …. Pete🇫🇷
Thanks Pete, they're just the right size for me, I don't need loads of room. Luckily they have a stiff plastic sheet in the back already and the canvas is folded around it internally so as long as the plastic is secure, the weight of the bag will hang on that. I've just been on the Amazon for some nice chunky washers to spread the force around the holes, there's always something else to get isn't there. Cheers, Glyn👍
Glyn they look superb, can't wait for the next major project though. One other thing, will we see these two projects at the 2025 Bike Shed Custom Bike show ?
Rusty from out of space ha ha. Nice bags and wonderfull idea with the brass fixing. Do you know if there is a brass fillercab available? I would love to have that myself and see it fitted on rusty. Thanks Glyn. Take care of my favorite enfield ever and ride save.
Thank you Berry 🙏 I've seen a brass cap for the oil filler but not the fuel. Im saving too much brass for the next one, code named 'FB' at the moment 🤪 No starting that while I'm enjoying Rusty though👹
Like the number plate. Far better! My old mate Eddie just passed his test. He collects his Halcyon Grey Classic on Tuesday. 😂 BTW, could you get some brass 10mm bolts? Also, maybe a washer between the bolt and the frame? Just a thought. The bags look perfect. Well done. 😊
That's great news, I bet you can't wait to get him out with you on the road. I've got some brass bits and bobs in my Amazon basket so better get those ordered before it all falls off. They do canvas butter too, but it seems a lot just to touch up a few holes so might use some normal butter, or some wax at least 🤪
I've got my eye out but haven't quite seen exactly what I want yet, they're either too big or too small or too modern or too shiny. Something will turn up👍
Hello, they're Shinko E270 Whitewalls and have a 100% height ratio so they're quite a bit taller than a standard tyre on the outside, I think these were the 4 inch ones, full details on the tyre episode early on in the playlist. The Metzelers are really nice and would probably fit much better. I had to raise the front mudguard/fender on mine otherwise it would be sitting on the tyre!!
Nice job Glyn! But not that easy to take off and put back on. Crash bars look great, and even better now as you say, balanced by the panniers. I bought on eBay a pair of "original" RE pannier frames and canvas (unwaxed) bags for my Classic 350 R, but I want a lockable pannier that can go on and come off easily. La Poderosa is a Spanish company that has nice gear, and they sell the German Klickfix clips separately, and these perhaps might work with your very nice Motea bags? They fit the Hitchcock rails, but not the RE frames grrr.
That's very interesting, it looks like there's a product just for this application called pannier rail clips (of course), I might have a look at those, not too late to do it another way 🤪 Thanks for the heads up
I've really been looking at those but haven't seen quite what I want yet, the ones I've seen look too good and modern if you know what I mean, even the cruiser style ones but they're too shiny anyway. There's the official Royal Enfield ones but they look a bit too smart too, something wacky may be in order🤪
