I've always loved the design formula that Audi uses with all their cars, being simple and conservative yet striking and elegant. However, I feel as though they aren't doing much with the exterior design of the new generation A4 and this A5, yet I still like it haha.
This car comes off much more attractive in you're live footage than Audi's press release photos. I was on the fence about the design of this car and now I'm sold.
Been waiting for this car for a long time now, and it did not disappoint. Beautiful exterior and interior, maybe a bit plain? But I guess that is the Audi style. Thomas, do you know when Mercedes will premiere the Mercedes E Class Coupe? Personally I can't wait for it, think it will be one of the best looking cars on the market.
I've been saying the same thing about my 2015. If I do deside on trading mine in it would be for the 2018 RS5 or the new Alfa Romero Giulia. I just can't justify going for the new S5 with such small power gains and a little weight loss compared to mine.
I am one of those who hate the design at first but in the flesh like the new r8 I'm sure this is going to change. I must say Audi are very futuristic in their design! Keep up the good work!
I love the new design. It's like a Porsche. The look is timeless. The new design evolves but still looks like the A5. Gorgeous, elegant and looks way better than previous generation.
i think that's the point why there are so many different opnions about this car. For some a timeless style is important and other ones prefer enormous changes.
***** I agree. I prefer the germans. Japanese and domestic car companies tend to change the car so radically every 5 years you can't even trace any lineage. Aston Martin, Audi, Porsche, Lambo, bmw all evolve in their designs. It also keeps owners of the previous generation cars happy as their cars still look relevant.
Thomas, I love the front and rear of both cars (A5 and S5) but the beefiness of the S5 is my favorite. Being over 6 foot tall as well, it's hard to find a comfortable sports car. It's great to see Audi has done this. I love the lines and new interior. The extra room on the interior is always nice. The virtual cockpit is amazing as well! In my humble opinion Audi nailed this all new A5/S5. Thanks for posting this video!

I don't know why people are complaining about the headlights. When the previous A5 model came out, everyone was complaining because they were too small. Now that they're bigger, people complain it is ugly? Certainly an improvement from the previous model headlights. Tail lights are so much better.

Awesome vid. Coming from a current RS 5 owner i was not thrilled by the pictures but then i never liked the pics of the old models either. The current RS 5 is a best of a car with tons of aggression and this vid helped me see that that has not been lost on the new models. I love the new side crease line and side black skirt (helps slim the cars appearance) :D i cant wait for the new RS 5 to be released but please Audi loose some weight.
Thanks for the comprehensive take on the new model! I own a previous generation 2016 A5. My thinking is it looks better on the front than this new model (im in favor of the LED that goes around the headlights in a more artistic way than the plain & simple letter F like -if rotated 90 degrees clockwise- LED lights on this new model) , still this model looks way better on the inside than my car. I'm sure they upgraded the Infotainment system so now it has become way quicker, smoother and with less freezing moments -that's one of the main problems with my current A5!- .I think this model would be equipped with the upgraded 2.0L TSI fitted in the new A4 (ca 250+ PS), I wish my car had more PS, 220 is good but given the car weight -because its a convertible- I'd always wish if I had a more powerful engine. I'm a big fan of your self-confidence in presenting the car and discussing details, this makes me want to check out your other reviews, Excellent job!
The new A5 is a beautiful Coupé !!! In my opinion, AUDI has adapted the design of the old model very successful to the new and characteristic design of the brand. The new front is very risky - but this was a good decision !!

Definately evolution, and a real Audi. It will grow on you .. Even now, the more I see it, the better i gets .. Glad tehy kept it mainly ok. And nice interiour! To bad of the fixed screen. Hope an option is to have it not in the car and all on the virtual cockpit. Next, looking forward to the convertible and the RS5.

bravo thomas, thank you for this excellent review / preview. the a5 and s5 are just gorgeous in my opinion. a bit rich for me as a daily driver though, the s5 runs at $150k aud, so about $100k euros, and a5 is about $120k aud, $80k euros. im not suggesting they are not worth the money, they are in my view, everywhere you look, especially the s5, is just amazing and beautiful. perhaps later in life, and a retirement gift to myself, i may look at an s5, or c63 for a bit more rear seat passenger space and an epic v8 sound track.
Nice design, but I would prefer the Mercedes C Coupe above this new Audi A5. I also like the BMW 4 series, but that one is already a bit older. And again a great review, as usual!
Awesome Thomas! I think this revision looks great. (Love the matte wood!) I can see how people get a little frustrated by the lack of "dramatic" change but in the end Audi is trying not to alienate people with the previous car. There's a rumour that the sportback A5 will be coming to North America. Did you hear anything about the introduction of the A5 sportback?

Good commentary. The A5 looks good (as always) but at some point, Audi needs to take a little more design risk. They could've used the typical Audi design language but taken a little more risk at the same time.
Great overview! However, I do feel like the front looks weird. I'm not sure if it's because of the awkward way the hood pushed down near the grill like it rear ended a LKW, or if the headlights just don't look menacing enough for the S5. I was expecting a headlight design more similar to the new A4/S4, but honestly, from the front angle, the A4/S4 looks better and more sporty/menacing. Every other angle looks amazing though!! Maybe I'll like it better once I've seen it in person...
I loved the previous gen RS5.. The huge grill, the sharp front.. They took all that away and went back to a 2007 BMW M5.. Only improvement was the headlights and of course, the beautiful interior. All in all, a step backwards IMHO. The previous RS5 will still be one of my favourite cars of all time, especially now. Oh and btw, you can't distinguish an RS5 to an A4 from the back, which is really sad..
Man, I need to get a job on the Audi styling team... they never have to do any real work! just tweak the lights and grille a bit and thats it, job done.

This is a great comprehensive review, thanks for posting. The non-retractable infotainment screen kills it for me. It looks so out of place just stuck in there almost as an after-thought. A car that has done so well with lines, and then they stuck that thing in there and destroyed the interior lines. The car looks great otherwise, but that interior will need a few tweaks between 17-18. Overall, the interior on my 2014 is better. Now waiting for the 2018, when they will hopefully at least make it retractable, if not put it back where it rightly belongs.
What? This is a major step back for the A5! The last generation was much more sexy and sporty. This looks like an A4/Tesla crossover. Not aggressive at all in my opinion, and this was the car most of us were waiting on. The TT looks MUCH more aggressive than this sad to say.
completely agree with Will. Interior wise i think Audi continues to maintain a leading position and I still love the interior but the exterior has gone downhill and now this new A5 exterior has lost its wow factor/presence. As an Audi fan I hate to say I've now pretty much given up on Audi. BMW 4 series is much more appealing even if I hate BMW's interior compared with Audi.
i agree that the back end is the best improvement, the slimmer tail lights look better and the diffuser also makes it look much better on the s, but the headlights look to much like the a/s3 to me, i prefer the b8.5 design, im upset too cause i had high hopes since i think the new a/s4 headlight design is an overall improvement.
I try to wear my leather shoes less often to give a good example of not presenting/buying leather anymore. There are also great high class vegan leather shoes now, thought about getting some of those
the old a5 looked much nicer on the exterior, i don't like the new front grill the way they reduced the height of it and made it longer, i also find that the headlights on the older one looked much more sinister and evil which i quite liked if you ever see the rs5 on the motor trend channel that looked so so good.i also don't like the way the bonnet curves down in the front, such a shame the A5 was always one of my favorite cars, this one will just have to grown on me! on the other hand i love the new interior!!! for the new model all i hoped for was a new interior, cool matrix LED headlight while keeping similar designs to the old one and better engines.
I'm a big audi fan but believe it or not, i tend to find this new model, and i can barely even say it, almost ugly. Nope sorry audi, wtf did you do here. Especially that new grill that looks like it's squished down by a seemingly very heavy front. rofl

Hi! Das Auto ist eine Mischung aus Alu und Carbon, Grundchassis Alu, einige der großen Teile dann aus Carbon, damit es noch leichter ist.

The design change comes with the Q2 and new A8 and A6/7 soon. The first cars designed by the new head of design Marc Lichte.

I'm not blown away, but I think the sportback will look better with this design. This will not replace my F36.
I like my 2010 better. The preface-lifted version looked the best to me.

What? This is a major step back for the A5! The last generation was much more sexy and sporty. This looks like an A4/Tesla crossover. Not aggressive at all in my opinion, and this was the car most of us were waiting on. The TT looks MUCH more aggressive than this sad to say.
completely agree with Will. Interior wise i think Audi continues to maintain a leading position and I still love the interior but the exterior has gone downhill and now this new A5 exterior has lost its wow factor/presence. As an Audi fan I hate to say I've now pretty much given up on Audi. BMW 4 series is much more appealing even if I hate BMW's interior compared with Audi.

i agree that the back end is the best improvement, the slimmer tail lights look better and the diffuser also makes it look much better on the s, but the headlights look to much like the a/s3 to me, i prefer the b8.5 design, im upset too cause i had high hopes since i think the new a/s4 headlight design is an overall improvement.

I try to wear my leather shoes less often to give a good example of not presenting/buying leather anymore. There are also great high class vegan leather shoes now, thought about getting some of those
There are imitations which look really good and are not leather. But these look like sport shoes! :)
the old a5 looked much nicer on the exterior, i don't like the new front grill the way they reduced the height of it and made it longer, i also find that the headlights on the older one looked much more sinister and evil which i quite liked if you ever see the rs5 on the motor trend channel that looked so so good.i also don't like the way the bonnet curves down in the front, such a shame the A5 was always one of my favorite cars, this one will just have to grown on me! on the other hand i love the new interior!!! for the new model all i hoped for was a new interior, cool matrix LED headlight while keeping similar designs to the old one and better engines.
I'm a big audi fan but believe it or not, i tend to find this new model, and i can barely even say it, almost ugly. Nope sorry audi, wtf did you do here. Especially that new grill that looks like it's squished down by a seemingly very heavy front. rofl
All newer Audis look strange on photos first but look great on the road.

New A5 front end looks better than the S5...bottom part of the S5 grille needs separation, it's continuous and doesn't look as aggressive.
