Though, it can very well be worse in a UAL (or other) economy seat. It all depends on the room allocated for each cabin and, thus, the seat pitch. A single class 400 seater could be more comfortable than a 3-class 350 seater (for economy passengers, duh). I've only tried the Air France long-haul domestic seat configuration or "COI" (for Caribbean Indian Ocean in French), the cattle class. Not the other high density 777's, only major international ones. If I recall correctly, the Air France COI ones have economy, premium economy, and business. On these routes there are some pretty packed planes, and there were 747's with 580 seats. I think Japan and France had the highest density 747's and 777's for domestic routes.
I mean, the airplane is overpowered and can carry 147 tonnes of jet fuel and seat around 350 pax and have cargo room left over, reduce the range a bit and you can fit more passengers
The high passenger capacity probably reduces the useable cargo capacity - not volumetrically but in weight. In the end, it's the same MTOW for each variant, regardless of the cabin configuration.

This reminds me of the 580 seat 747's on French long haul domestic flights to overseas departments. Whether they were / are Corsair, Air France, Air Caraïbes, French Bee, or Air Austral, the planes on these routes tend to have a higher density. Especially the 3 iconic Corsair 747's with SEA, SEX, and SUN regs. Locals often complained that the planes between the mainland and their islands are less comfortable than on international transatlantic flights, despite the ticket ptices not being particularly cheap, even though they are domestic flights. All the classes used to be substantially downgraded versions of the international ones, but this improved noticeably in the past few years.
I flew on Saudia Airlines from Jeddah to Dhaka yesterday (seems that aircraft is under Air Atlanta), and it was brutaaal to say the least with 492 pax! Inflight entertainment is available on your own device, which I didnt know before boarding. Then as people brought extra cabine baggages, so the crew took a lot of them to cargo and there my bag went away with my headphones (so no IDE for 6 hours). Food was decent, service was nice too by the crews, but then no water in the lavatory I went. The aircraft being 19 years old I understand overall the experience would be underwhelming, but didnt see it coming this bad :(
Have been on ANA 514-seat 773 flying from HND to CTS. Very fortunate that the Saturday 7am flight I was on only had about 50 passengers! I had a whole row (I mean all 10 seats in my row) to me.

Surprisingly 550 seats is the most number of seats a 777 can handle in a single-class configuration. In a three class configuration it is 451 seats (first+biz+eco).
Wait till there is a serious emergency and people can't get out. Any 777 with 10 across seating is a no-go for me. Elbows and shoulders rubbing together on a 12 hour night flight is insane. Same with 787s. Next January, I will be flying economy on SIA 777 ER, which still has the correct 9 across seating.
@davidajayi1207 I still wouldn't like to be on board during such an incident. Those tests use people who cooperate with instructions, when there is no threat to their lives. They also don't try to take hand luggage with them, slowing down the exit. Imagine the insane pandemonium if there was smoke involved or at night. Bad enough on any aircraft but with nearly double the density of what the 777 was originally designed for, it's a potential nightmare when it doesn't have to be.
I have flown on the Mavi Gök 777 in Octobre 2023 from Hannover to Antalya. Back then, it still had the virgin australia cabin layout with much more than 7 Business class seats and even premium economy. Does anyone know if it has been reconfigured?
The two things are related actually: more people means a lot more weight so less weight can be allocated for cargo, as the maxim weigh (MTOW) of a plane can carry is fixed. So there's a real need for people to travel "light", with lighter luggages and to disincentivize people from carrying heavy luggages they impose higher fees
