I hear the wind call your name
It calls me back home again
It sparks up the fire, a flame that still burns
Oh, it's to you, I'll always return, yeah
I still feel your breath on my skin
I hear your voice deep within
The sound of my lover, a feeling so strong
Oh, it's to you, I'll always belong
Now I know it's true, yeah
My every road leads to you
And in the hour of darkness, darling
    Your light gets me through
    Wanna swim in your river
    Be warm by your sun
    Bathe in your waters
    'Cause you are the one
    I can't stand the distance
    I can't dream alone
I can't wait to see you
Yes, I'm on my way home
    I'm on my way
Oh, I hear the wind call your name
The sound that leads me home again
It sparks up the fire, a flame that still burns
Oh, it's to you I will always return

I'm absolutely heartbroken. I loved Hukumuri, marveled at his fierce will to live and thrive. Despite having lost an eye, Hukumuri continued to be a stellar presence in the Sabi Sands, commanding awe and respect with his hunting prowess. His death is a loss for all of us.
I have read the article regarding his demise. Human conflict and habitat loss are the two greatest problems facing wildlife worldwide. The villagers are to be commended for working with the authorities in this issue although the outcome is devastating for all concerned. I will miss Hukumuri, mourn the loss of a great leopard, and rejoice in the wild and free way in which he lived his noble life.

I still can't watch this without crying. I feel such anger and sadness. Not over the whole political side of it, but purely for the loss of such a magnificent, powerful and awe inspiring animal. I have and ALWAYS will stand by my feelings that these animals were here long before us, and hopefully long after us. Rest in Paradise sweet boy.
You were taken in circumstances that never should have happened.
I do just want to make clear I am blaming no one, I understand there are multiple sides to this and reasons. Like I said. It is purely and simply sadness over such a huge loss. Having SL got me through the worst times of my life when my illnesses nearly took my life. It gave me a way to connect with my life passion, animals and nature.
All I will say is my love goes out to the others that have felt this awful loss as deeply as I have. XxxxxX

Everybody has an opinion now and a lot of people all of a sudden know better than the experts that deal with this kind of situation very often. It is very sad because we all loved Hukumuri but maybe all of us watching him on Safari Live or visiting Djuma and seeing him on Safari carry a little bit of blame. Because we want to be close to the big 5, they are habituated to vehicles and to people on foot just so that we can see these magnificent animals up close. So maybe this is the price they pay because they are now not scared of people and will move close to communities without fear because they have bee habituated to let people and vehicles get close to them

So sorry Hukumuri, you were shot to death. Savage. Read the article on "The death of Hukumuri" from Africa Geographic Stories. Couldn't refrain from commenting:
Humans know better yet fail to act better. Killing a wild animal that also struggles to survive out of instincts & due to habitat loss is not the answer. Humans, we need to change our own behaviors & perceptions as we are the worst predators on this planet.
Also, c'mon, be accountable & responsible. Procreation without an ability to provide due to socio-economic circumstances is abusive. It perpetuates a vicious cycle of abject poverty.

A lot of wildlife channels (WildEarth, Painted Dog TV, etc) do a lot to educate people on conservation-related issues such as human-wildlife conflict. And a lot of money those groups make goes towards conservation. Another reason channels like them exist is to educate people on the wildlife of the area (another tool that is vital for conservation).

So many excuses as to why this happened but there is ONLY 1 reason.. Humans! We need more land, more livestock for our HUGE family! STOP having 7 or more fucking kids, dont leave the important job of looking after your life savings in livestock to kids, Africa is huge, if you want/have to live in the wild you gotta deal with the wildlife! But see we have guns, and instead of admitting that multiplying like cockroaches IS NOT THE ANSWER.. we blame it on the animals whos land we have taken, whos water we pollute, whos food we kill for ourselves.. but its the leopards fault for coming into OUR villiage, putting OUR kids at risk, killing OUR livestock, so as humans do best we destroy the animal!
Ppl are disgusting, no way around it..
But i sure know that if my life was as as tough as theirs, the very last thing i wud want is a dozen kids to take care of!!
Or maybe thats it, they just have kids to help them instead of when ur poor having to take care of can be a burden.. they just look at it completely backwards like say, I would!
In the US im considered at or below the poverty line bcuz i got disabled at 30 yrs old but even before that when i had a decent job, made decent enough money, I decided to stop at 3 bcuz my choice to have more kids wud have made their lives harder, wud have made less food for myself and my other kids and that is not right! So as a mature adult, i made the tough call to just not have anymore kids.. if i made more money, i wud have had 20 kids, i love kids but not enough to burden them with a terribly hard life bcuz i cudnt keep my dick in my pants

it's just hard for me to believe that shooting and killing him was the only option as opposed to being reactionary and angry assuming he did the things he did in that village. it seems like better fencing, knowing that there was/is a high likelihood of a wild animal coming into the village, any village, and using something like a tranquilizer dart, should be mandatory as opposed to killing. If there is time to shoot to kill, there should also be time to shoot to tranquilize. All that being said, I knew in my heart that Hukumuri was going to have to tough time in life with only one eye. To fend off other leopards and be able to eat was going to be a big task. The 1st leopard that I fell in love with was Hosana, always will be i guess. However, I came to respect Hukumuri and definitely developed a soft spot in my heart for him seeing such a tough life he had to deal with. R.I.P. #Huk so very, very sad.

Oh don’t forget, he was not the only predator who was killed in this way. They are just too greedy to pay for better fencing!

    • @hyenaboy7504
      @hyenaboy7504 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@ninapopal6118 If they were "greedy" as you suggest, they would not be helping animals that have been injured by humans, would they? For example: they wouldn't be removing snares from around the necks of predators (lions, hyenas, wild dogs, etc) if they didn't care about animals and only cared about the money.

I was at Sabi Sabi in 2009. Adored the Leopards we saw there and several of my very favorite pictures are of one in a tree tugging at an antelope she had stuffed there, Its horns were caught on the branches and no matter how hard she tugged in the wrong direction she could not move it. We sat and watched her for almost an hour. We saw another beautiful one eyed Leopard in South Luangwa in 2017 . They are magnificent creatures. Thank you so much for posting this wonderful tribute.

I’m in pain but I also understand. I had no idea the park is borders neighborhoods or that the animals have limited space. I’m now wondering how the human/wildlife dichotomy can be fixed. Maybe a “go fund me” to purchase land for the animals to a natural barrier. Of course I don’t have a clue “what” natural barriers. Thank you to the rangers I’m sure this was hard on you as well.

Humans had absolutely no right whatsoever to shoot him. Humans (Djuma, WE team & other safari guides & neighbouring parks) work to habituate the leopards. He had no fear of humans. How is an animal supposed to distinguish between livestock (food for the village) & wild animals? He hunted for food. That’s all he did. Albeit in a village, but as mentioned he was taught not to fear humans all to bring in a dollar or two. Then humans decide to shoot him for doing what’s natural to feed himself. Disgusting behaviour from humankind! As for the village - build fences!!!! WE, Djuma & neighbouring game reserves should actually contribute to pay for the fencing - particularly as it is they themselves who want the animals habituated to bring in the $. Furthermore, a human’s life has no greater value or significance than that of an animal. Humans had absolutely no right to take his life away at all!
