This song is almost slapping us in the face describing heroin addiction. Almost every lyric. Kurt said it was about kids with cancer and Courtney's love of heart shaped boxes.
I always thought it was about love, and being trapped by it not being able to live someone else and being manipulated into loving someone you didn’t want to love

Great video. It’s clear that Kurt definitely was inspired by Courtney’s lyrical abilities.
Bleach and Nevermind’s lyrics were always very “collage”, where you could tell he was trying to fit anything there that could rhyme, yet still fit the narrative, while Hole’s Pretty on the Inside, early singles, and even Courtney’s pre-Hole band Pagan Babies showcased just how well Courtney could make you feel what she was feeling, just through poetry that didn’t even rhyme half of the time. It’s not very surprising that after a year and a half of sharing a journal with his wife, Kurt’s lyrics were vastly more deep and feminine, and he was able to capture the feelings of love and relationships, the good and bad that comes with it.
Some of Heart-Shaped Box and other songs on In Utero bare similarity to lyrics Courtney wrote on Pretty on the Inside, particularly “I wish I could eat your cancer when you turn black; broken hymen of your highness”. These lines bare similarity to verses such as “I want a cancer that the crooked-eye spun; baby I burn black for you; she tears the hole up even wider”. On All Apologies, Kurt says “married, buried”, which bares similarity to Courtney’s “bury me cause I buried you deep in me”. I won’t mention Milk It because all in all, both Kurt and Courtney referenced suicide a lot and it’s clear that it was a trait both of them had but it’s also been made clear that most of the poetry Courtney wrote during her pregnancy, her postpartum depression, and losing custody of Frances was centered around motif’s of milk, fetuses, motherhood, and suicide. They even allegedly had made a pact that if anybody tried to get in the way of their family, they would commit suicide together so that goes to show how crazy they BOTH were, yet it’s always the woman that’s gets the blame, isn’t it?
Anyway, I’m glad you praised both of their art instead of attempting to smear Courtney’s name and talent like most of the other Nirvana videos do, great job!

Ive often heard of the crucified man being referred to as the junkie jesus. Apparently, the man was actually dying here of cancer and passes away not long after the video was shot. Very very deep video,loads of interpretations in it x. Also its known that crows, when they sense that death is near go for the eyes of a person, animal etc....thats quite eerie. I've heard Courtney kept the heroin inside a heart shaped box and that it was about how he felt trapped by the drugs, the addiction to both heroin and Courtney herself, him starting to come to grips with the mistake he'd made (again) of confusing passion for love and how he'd made a mistake in having a baby so soon "cut myself on angel hair and baby's breath"
"angel hair" is from Courtney and baby's breath meaning Frances and to have cut himself means to have made a mistake that's painful
In some early live performances of this song, instead of heart shaped box, he sings heart shaped coffin. That may provide a different insight to what he was referring to as well. Then again, he also was known for changing the lyrics often during live performances so it would just about be a one of a kind experience.
I've come to find out not too long ago that the working title for Heart-Shaped Box was Heart Shaped Coffin....

I think he struggled with being there for his daughter in a real family and not a product of divorce like how he was torn and abandoned after his parents divorce. But if his parents divorce never happened i highly doubt we get all these precious gems that Kurt wrote.

Hmm let's see, the video is full of poppies, he sang about a magnet tar pit trap, and was and addict drawn to black tar heroin as if by a magnetic un seen force he could not escape, his romance with Courtney was as wrapped up with their addiction as much as their love and hatred for each other. So the hearts shaped box could've been a momento box as Courtney said, though she has also stated that everyone is stupid because the heart shaped box is her vagina, so yeah we can't rely on what she says too much, and kurt was never into explaining himself anyway, but I will also add that every drug user has to keep their drugs in something, and quite a lot of them choose some sort of nice box, that others may have used or seen as a momento box, but is where they go to begin their ritual of getting high. I always figured there was a good chance that he had a heart shaped box where he kept his stash at, and had been lost in their for weeks at a time. It was somewhat poetic and telling, because as i said before, they were 2 junkies who blended their love and need for chemicals with their need for love, which is the giver of life, and with the absence of love or the chemical one is dependent upon it can leave a person fixated on death. To rewind one's life can become an obsessive ever present thought, as to rewind before the crippling addiction, to the chemical or to the twisted love or place one has been boxed up inside of, and just rewind all the way back, to climb the umbilical noose right back, to the times before he was dying inside, suicidal, to before the tightening bonds of a child and marriage, or even go crawling back to his iwn mother and rewind to childhood or before his own existence, if need be to alleviate the pain and guilt of suicide, as he wouldn't have to kill himself and disappoint anyone if he never existed.
The song may be about love but it's certainly not a happy love song, and may be as much about love of drugs, as the temporaryescape escape vehicle from a bad love, that will often trigger a drug cycle that the broken heart will drive an addict into

Kurt Cobain mashed poetic lyrics he wrote in his journals. There was nothing that was thought provoking about the song. Yes Courtney gifted him a heart shaped box but, that’s it. The song nearly never even happened because it was the first song he ever wrote the lyrics first before the music notes on the guitar.
