In the 80s, Billy Idol taught us to live, love and about the merits of white weddings. He also introduced us to the phrase "eyes without a face". But way back in 1960, filmmaker Georges Franju made a film of that same title and Matt and Craig take another trip on the ol' leather couch to watch it. Your heart will pound! Your skin will crawl! It's creepy and it's French. Mon Dieu!
In Seen It, we discuss Italian fantasies, American Fantasias and rotoscoped paranoia.
All film footage is used in accordance with fair use and US copyright law. All music in the show is used with full permission of the composer.
Thanks for all the great comments. Keep em coming! If you watch one of the movies we discuss, let us know what you thought of it.
Welcome To The Basement" is a show about watching, discussing and having fun with movies. Matt choses the movie and Craig doesn't know what it is until the cameras start rolling, so none of the discussion or riffing is planned ahead of time.
Movie announced on facebook before every new episode. Get the movie and follow along. We do discuss the entire movie, including the ending, so if you want to avoid spoilers, watch the movie first. - ตลก
Oh my God, Matt just basically predicted part of "Terminator: Genysis" in this video, with Old Schwarzenegger fighting young Schwarzenegger.
That was a cool scene, too
First half hour of Genesys was really good! Awesome recreations of scenes from the original movie with a twist on the story that really worked, where Sarah Connor was already aware of the Terminator threat. We finally got to see the resistance in the future war conquer the facility with the time displacement device and yes, the fantastic scene with young vs. old Arnold!
Sadly it went off the rails when they started talking about nexus points and traveled forward in time and nothing made sense anymore! Clearly they just needed to go forward in order to end up in the present day because it was cheaper to film the rest of the movie in present day but it turned the story into a mess!
I know this comment is 6 years too late, but basically, Cameron stole Matt's idea lol
And now I have Billy Idol's "Eyes Without a Face" song stuck in my head.
Seriously, that "Louis Revelson" Terminator idea is still better than anything we ended up with.
Just finished the new B&BG, clicked refresh, and seen this. Great night! Good job on everything so far, guys!
Hey, guys! Love the Basement. Have you seen Brother of Sleep? It's a German film from the late 80's or 90's. I had it on VHS but I don't think they even made a DVD. I asked for the DVD for Christmas & my Mom couldn't find it anywhere. Real art house movie. Or how about Dogville with Nicole Kidman? That one's a little more well known & star studded. Very weird but I don't know why I like it - I could say that about both movies.
I'd like to personally thank Craig for giving a name to the Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon which I keep experiencing frequently, even in this video: I just read literally 2 hours ago a gruesome article about a leather belt crafted with nipples by Ed Gein, who I didn't even know existed before today, and Ta-Da, you talk about him in the episode. Almost too perfect to be true. Keep up the good work!
This is my favourite show on the internet! We don't have a TV but still this show is better than anything on tele in the UK!! Thanks Matt and Craig!
That Terminator idea actually sounded really good, I would definitely watch that :)
A few days ago I was linked to the definition of a word, baader-meinhof, I thought the concept was interesting but didn't think much about it, yesterday I watched this video and the phenomenon was mentioned, later in the episode you mentioned a film I had never heard of; holy motors and just now I was looking at a list of recommended films and number one... Holy motors
Also loving the vinyl of The Stranger in the background. I'm glad you're a Billy Joel fan. I've seen him twice in the past few years. 2 of the best live shows I've ever been to.
I'm glad you chose to watch that one, been meaning to watch it for a long time and never got around to it.
Woooo!!! The Oriental rocks. I live in Milwaukee and have been to that theater many, many times!
Craig! C'mon! I got really excited when you said you had an idea for an Abyss prequel! ugh! haha I love Fantasia and the Dinosaur segment is my favorite. You're killing me this time Craig. ;p
Hi Matt and Craig, I always look forward to seeing a new WTTB appearing in the subscription feed. I'm going to be making more donations as well to show my support! Even though Halloween is more than a month away, I was wondering if either of you two have seen 'Trick R' Treat?' directed by Michael Dougherty and released in 2007, it's become my go-to film for a scary Halloween night.
I saw this movie recently, and I enjoyed it somewhat, but hearing you guys talk about the underlying meaning of the movie and its historical context really made me see the movie in a different light. I appreciate your insight
A favorite. Seen the American version on TV many times when I was a kid. Saw the French version at the Film Forum in N.Y.
I'm surprised no one made a Billy idol joke through this episode
Hey that was my Scene It recommendation! I'm glad you guys like A Scanner Darkly as much as I do. I also REALLY want to watch Eyes Without A Face now.
Ahhh i always wanted to watch this, now i can see the resemblance on the Antonio Banderas movie La Piel que Habito, its sorta the same plot just about skin experimentation and i really recommend it for you guys to watch our, great job!!
I was really looking forward to this video. One of the few movies I had seen before you guys!
I plan on making a series very similar to this show thank you you've just inspired me thank you for existing and making this entertaining show.
Such a huge fan of everything that you great folks do over there at Blame Society, Keep it up.
Excellent episode, definitely one of my favorites, so thank you.
Have you seen Michael Mann's crime drama Heat?
The disappointment in Craig's face after he realized his pun made me laugh the most in this episode. The trip!
Reminds me a lot of The Skin I Live In (La piel que habito) a 2011 Spanish psychological thriller film written and directed by Pedro Almodóvar.
Along the lines of the 5 day challenge, you could (if you could get a copy) watch The Clock, an art installation by video artist Christian Marclay (born 1955). It is in effect a clock, but it is made of a 24-hour montage of thousands of time-related scenes from movies and some TV shows, meticulously edited to be shown in "real time": each scene contains an indication of time (for instance, a timepiece, or a piece of dialogue) that is synchronized to show the actual time. The Clock debuted at London's White Cube gallery in 2010.
An excellent pick by Craig! I see a lot of foreign sub-titled movies. I find that in terms of characters and dramatic stories, they are so much more entertaining for my cinematic buck. Great show Guys...
how dare you! Citroen 2CV is a great car with great function! It's one of the best cars French ever made!
Great episode. Loved the Terminator idea, the Baader-Meinhof reference, and 'Eyes Without A Face', which I just recently watched, as the film choice. Scene it: Philip Ridley's 'The Reflecting Skin'? It's similar in themes and atmosphere to Gilliam's 'Tideland', but even as a big Gilliam fan I think 'The Reflecting Skin' is better.
Love this show!
In Xanadu did Kublai Khan, a stately pleasure dome decree, whereof the sacred rivers ran, through caverns measureless to man, down to a sunless sea.
No, don't do Citizen Kane, do Xanadu! ONJ was the most beautiful woman ever immortalised on film in that movie, PLUS she was on wheels! :)
"... used in ways that are frowned upon" such understatement!
Great episode, love this show.
Sweet leather jacket Mr. Sloan.....looks boss
If you'd like some really weird movies, I'd recommend taking a look at David Cronenberg's "Naked Lunch". It is a really strange movie that also works as a very good deterrent for anyone looking to get into drugs. Also quite an accomplishment seeing as I've been told the book it was (loosely) based on was actually written on drugs and made even less sense.
The book rocked, the movie was eh. Just as is with most screen adaptations of books.
the movie made me _want_ to take drugs lol
zeugfilms You mean you wanted to shoot your own wife, encounter giant bugs that speak out of their anuses, and go off to Interzone so that you can get dragged into a bizarre international conspiracy that may or may not be happening?
i so loved the world, i visited interzone and stayed in the same hotel, same room as Burroughs.
zeugfilms Okay, well if your typewriter inexplicably transforms into a giant bug, give it my regards, will you?
I love the Stranger LP in the background!!
Hey I love everything you guys do
Female Lead. Something built or destroyed..... Nausicca: Of the Valley of the Wind. :D Please
Always enjoy hearing you guys say some stuff in french, reminds me of Monthy Python.
Did they almost predict the new Terminator movie there?
AWESOME!!!!
Billy Joel's "The Stranger" album in the background is a great touch.
Not sure if anyone pointed this out, but there was a deleted scene (may not be canon) in Terminator 3 that explained who the T-800 body model was.
Cyber research systems showed a film about the T-800 model to a number of key politicians and military personal. Chief Master Sergeant William Candy (played by Schwarzenegger) was shown as the body model for the robots. However, CMSgt. Candy had a jovial, cheerful southern accent (dubbed over). One of the politicians expressed concern over the accent, to which one of the CRS exectutives replied that they "can fix it". This line was dubbed with Schwarzenegger's actual voice, showing who would be selected to voice double for the T-800s.
Combine that with Matt's idea, and I think we've got a good movie here. William Candy is held captive, but escapes as an older man. He's grizzled, but still has some of his down-home southern charm. He becomes part of the resistance, gets sent back in time. John and Sara Conner think he's a terminator (T-800s have shown the ability to emulate other voices). The bad news is that all of human Swarzenegger's lines would have to be dubbed over by a gregarious and fun-loving southern gentleman.
My favourite Dustin Hoffman performance (a nod also goes to Gary Busey and Harry Dean Stanton) - "Hard Time"
Kitty corner was the term for me. Never heard the term before. Heard it for the first time, then in the next 10 days heard it a 30 or 40 times.
I don't know what it is about that mask but I love it. It's so beautiful. Even if she had a perfect face I would still want her to wear that mask. It looks amazing.
Still waiting for the sequel to The Abyss: Son of Abyss!
You've probably filmed the next episode already, but Lars von Trier's Melancholia would fit the 'female lead + built or destroyed' bill with interest: Kirsten Dunst *and* Charlotte Gainsbourg, and *the whole world* :) I'd love to see what you make of it.
So they released a new Blu-ray of Young Frankenstein this week. I bought it yesterday and was holding the case, about to put the disc in, when Matt said, "Put.. the candle.. BACK!" Haha That's crazy! And that's kinda like what Craig was talking about in the beginning of the show. Ya know... the Bernie Madoff effect, or something like that...
"You don't know me from Adam." and variations along those lines... I didn't understand what that was supposed to mean but I started hearing it, again, and again.
im a new fan and i love you guys
Have you seen Juan of the Dead, also known as Juan De Los Muertos? I caught it recently on HBOGo. It's a great little zombie comedy filmed in Cuba, by Cubans. The whole zombie thing is a bit oversaturated now, but the Cuban perspective makes it feel fresh.
Have you guys seen Alexander? It's a movie I love even though everyone seems to hate it, and it's a great return to the old-fashioned historical epic.
Hi. I have been watching your shows on this channel for a while now and I enjoy beer and board games as well as Welcome to the Basement. I feel that both shows are amazing and I always like to rewatch them. However, why did you stop the epic tales from the internet show? I really thought that it could have gone somewhere.
Have you guys seen the movie fear and loathing in las Vegas? I love it and have seen it several times. PS it makes more sense when you are drunk
A Scanner Darkly is a really close adaptation of the book, even if it is missing one of the most affecting little sections.
Matt's Terminator reboot is actually very close to the the plot from the Terminator 2 book series by S.M. Stirling (2001-2003). It's a pretty good read if you're a Terminator fan, and definitely does a much better job of continuing the story compared to Rise of the Machines, Salvation, and Genysis. There are also a lot of story elements in the novels that you see in those subsequent films (ie. hybrid human/terminators, and Arnold vs. Arnold).
Did Matt just predict the new Terminator movie?
Personally, I would think this movie not only is about the father's fears, but also about the daughter's own personal horror of losing her identity.
The daughter has had her face ripped off and been declared dead. She no longer exists in the eyes of the world with her father flat-out saying that she will need a new identity, but none of the faces work. She realizes that she can never regain her old identity, or be the person she knew herself to be before all this happened because of how much it has changed her.
Maybe that's why she killed her father and his assistant in the end: she wants it all to stop because she realizes the pointlessness and hopelessness of it all.
Kind of adds a level of despair to the horror of the film.
I think it's less about identity and more about how intertwined beauty is with selfhood, i.e. she stops being a person if she is grotesque BECAUSE she is a young woman. Notice he only helps women and it would indeed not end a man's life. The part where she says she sees someone else when she looks in the mirror speaks more to her guilt she's wearing a dead woman's face imo.
I think that car is a Citroen 2CV, there was segment about it on the last episode of Top Gear. It apparently was quite influential and had similar origins to the VW Beetle.
I just watched The Rover and it has to be one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. Robert Pattinson is incredible in this movie (never thought I'd say that) and Guy Pearce is just.... life changing. I'd really like to know if you have seen this movie and what you think of it. Please. :)
those effects were amazing for the time.
If you haven't seen it, I think you should do Jean-Luc Godard's 'Weekend'. I'd love to see you watching the road accident scene and the mallet and bacon confrontation near the end.
Yay! Welcome to the basement!
I've been watching this show so long, I knew Ernesto would be voiced-over by a scream. God help me.
You should really watch Melancholia by Lars von Trier for the next one :) I love that movie and it corresponds to the cards :)
Another film you could try is Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust. It's an intricate fantasy/horror animated film that is little appreciated, but it remains one of my favorite blind buys ever.
Have you seen Westworld?
A frenchman insulting the Scot's steel? That's like a dwarf calling an NBA player short.
A really good movie for you to watch would be Full Eclipse, it's very very cheesy and b movie-esque but the villain in it is great. It's about cops who use a serum that give them wolf-like super powers and use those powers to fight crime!
You guys have seen the 5th element right? gotta love that opera alien
Fantastic film with some thought provoking ideas against science and using body parts and organs from people to put on other people.
I was wondering if you guys have seen Michael Mann's Heat. I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.
Hey guys love the show. You guys should watch Brick it's a great and interesting Joseph Gordon-Levitt movie. It's an awesome take on film noir
The film adaptation of Naked Lunch! Have ya seen it?! Its nothing like the book, although I suppose thats for the best.
Nice choice of background record, by the way.
Have you seen 1987's movie Beaks? It's a strange and unusual horror film about an upraise of birds, kind of like Birdemic!
I also saw that car from the film in person today! this movies following me too! help!
The ugly car is called a "2CV" as "Deux Chevaux/Two Horses", It was the main car in France back in the days, and I got a friend who still has one. Don't be so cruel about french people please, we also like good things as your shows ;p
Ps: In french we pronounce "Bacon" as you do^^
Have you ever seen Ken Russell's The Devils from 1971?
13:09 Billy Jooooeeell 😍😍😍😍😍😍
Matt, I think that was the premise of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Particularly the episode "Allison from Palmdale."
Have you guys seen the French film La Haine? An emotionally devastating film with beautiful black and white photography.
i fainted at the face part, then again at scene it. forgot to breathe while playing my bagpipes
Apologies if this has already been said, but how did you not mention Almodovar's "The Skin I Live In"? It's like a post-Hitchcock version of this film!
is it bad that the first film that came to mind from the two cards at the end of this episode was "Contact" with Jodi Foster?
Luv the copy of Bily Joel's the stranger in the bakground.
Have you seen Almodovar's La Piel que Habito? I think in English the title is The Skin I Live in. It's similar to this movie in some ways.
Yay!!!
Recommendation for a later show, if you have not seen it Matt you guys should watch Highway featuring Jared Leto and Jake Gyllenhaal. I just recently watched it and enjoyed the great soundtrack and interesting plot about a kid who has sex with a rich mans wife. They have to flee town and run to Seattle to escape Miranda's Pandas to prevent Leto's feet from being broken.
impressive special makeup effects for the time period. loved the face removal.
Nodding off during the dinosaur part?!
Hey guys, have you seen Attack of the 50 Foot Woman 1958 original or Daryl Hannah, Daniel Baldwin remake?
I was heading to bed about 22 min ago :/ Glad I didn't though, gory but interesting movie thank you :)
Nice Joan Rivers-impression at the very end of the episode Craig.
Try watching the film Evangelion 1.0 You are (not) Alone! It's amazingly well animated with three dimensional characters and a lot of biblical themes.
I would watch the shit out of that Terminator movie!!
I had never seen Eyes Without A Face, feeling ashamed now.
This is too weird... I heard the term Baader-Meinhof for the first time yesterday on imgur, prior to watching this episode. Spooky!!
Is that a copy of Billy Joel's "The Stranger" album behind Matt's head? Seems appropriate, given the movie chosen.
Aramis419 Correct
I found a cut price Michael Shannon, look up Joel Tobeck on IMDB haha :-P
Cool jacket
Why don't you guys have a podcast?? That would be super special.
Oh god, I just had a Baader-Meinhof phenomenon *about* the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon; my dad was describing it last night at dinner. >.<
Edit: WTF. And he was talking about the expression "elephant in the room".
