+0mink0 there is no film before black christmas with that plot. black christmas inspired "when a stranger calls." a couple of real life murders and an urban legend inspired black christmas
There is a phone call after each murder. The last shot of the movie clearly shows that Claire has been killed, as the sound of a phone ringing can clearly be heard. I really enjoyed this video. The line about Art Hindle looking like a tall Peter Dinklage was absolutely hilarious.
They do imply the killer is still in the attic. The film ends with camera pulling out to a long shot of the house and the credits roll. If you keep watching, in a few moments you hear the phone begin ringing again. What a nice touch, they just don't make 'em like this anymore, kids!
I thought I'd seen all of these, but somehow managed to miss this one. So glad I finally got to see it! I think it's one of my favorites now too. Thank you so much!
Happy Xmas guys! I watched this movie as a kid, & it scared the crap out of me! I was afraid to go into attics or even look at attic windows for a long time after. Great work, as always.
On the "Spectre" sound bleeding over to "Brooklyn", I saw "Salem" in a run down theater. The movie hit a really critical point (hard to remember because of what happened), but it was a very emotional moment...when one of the speakers died. The rest of the movie sounded like the guy from the epic crying video.
I love, love, looove "Black Christmas"! It is the one that says, "The call's coming from inside the house," :). It's one of only a few films that freaks me out. Love it!
I feel very honored to be the last "Seen It" of 2015. Also: Whenever someone asks me my favorite movie, I immediately say "Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie" Seen it?
Matt, you were right about "...if." The black and white segments weren't supposed to be black and white, it was just that the footage was damaged in some way before the cutting of the film.
Talking about Milland... Have you guys seen this Corman classic 'X: The man with the X-ray Eyes' ? I love this show by the way. Always looking forward to a new episode.
That Han Solo reference really made me giggle. Craig in line with your murderer staging the scene have you ever watched Bron/Broen (the original Bridge)? And Merry Christmas to you guys as well
Haha my name is kind of tricky on American phonetics, I see. Very glad to donate monthly! I wish I could donate more, but exchange rates are going crazy in Brazil.
I love Black Christmas. It's one of the best slashers because it's so different than the now established formula. Modern slashers pay minimal attention to plot and tension building. The characters are just there to get murdered and are barely developed over the course of the film.
I agree with Matt about the problems with plausibility in found footage films, but the interesting thing about that sub-genre is that even though they've had relatively short-lived popularity in movie-making terms, the premise has become much more plausible in the last couple of years. It seems that no matter what terrible events occur, there's someone on hand with a smart phone to document it (the recent terror attacks in Paris spring to mind). Whether this has an effect on filmmaking trends, I guess we'll have to just wait and see.
First you watch BTTF 2 where they leave Jennifer in the alleyway and now you watch Black Christmas where they leave Jess in her bed with perhaps the killer still in the house. I am detecting a theme.
Matt and Craig, will you please do a viewing or a Seen-it of the movie "Random Harvest" from from 1942? It was my late grandmother's favorite film and it would mean a lot to hear you guys talk about it.
A Talking Heads joke? You guys make the best references in these videos! Anyway, I have something for Seen It: have you seen The Goodbye Girl? If you have seen it, what did you think of it?
I've seen Sgt. Nash ( Doug McGrath ) in SO many movies ( Outlaw Josey Wales,The Gauntlet, Porky's, Pale Rider, The Rocketeer, etc.); he must be put in the That Guy Hall of Fame ASAP !!
Please watch on the show "The Possession" by Andzrej Zulawski. It's a fantastic horror movie with some horrifying images and probably one of the most powerful female perfomances in the history of cinema by Isabelle Adjani. I think you'll love it. It's a really deep film with adult themes.
Great episode guys! I will now leave my bi-weekly Seen It comment...have you seen Mary & Max!? I'm assuming since you haven't mentioned it in Seen It yet, it's going to be a future episode. Awesome! :D
SEEN IT?: I don't know if I'm doing this right or if you've already talked about this film but have you seen "Before I Disappear" by: Shawn Christensen, who directed, wrote, and starred in it. It's an extended version of the Academy Award winning short film "Curfew" (also written, directed and starred in by Shawn Christensen). I thought it was going to be another Tommy Wiseau situation (*cough* The Room *cough*) but I honestly really liked this film and it holds a special place in my heart, even though critics didn't really seem to feel the same way. So, have you seen it?
It was coined the first slasher movie because it was supposedly the first where the camera gave the POV of the killer in some of the sequences. Also if memory serves me correct. John Carpenter was somehow attached to this movie originally. Im assuming to direct. Can't remember what happened but he went on to do some tv then Assault on Precinct 13. Something to that effect. However.. He used the "holiday" basis of this movie a few years later for Halloween. This is one of my all time favorites. Scared the sh.t out of me as a kid probably more than any other movie. It still gives me the creeps to this day
Love Matt totally (and correctly) shutting Craig down on his 2001: A Slasher Movie theory. It's an interesting question to debate, but it falls apart in the end. A horror movie, sure. A slasher no.
I just realized an interesting red herring regarding the Peter character - we see him smashing up the piano in anger after the recital and the film is filled with that same crashing piano sound for the soundtrack. I wonder if that was initial??
Have you seen "Election" with Matthew Broderick and Reese Witherspoon? I would love to hear your take on it, especially the ending and where all the characters end up.
Guys, great episode. By the way if you are interested in getting a different take on this movie their is a remake/rework called Black Xmas which is the same movie, but more explained and more updated. Enjoy.
Have you guys seen krampus? If u did what did u think about it. I thought it was a fun holiday horror that won't leave u sleepless but will still creep u outthe right amount.
Seen It? Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens! I watched it at an early screening at my local (sold out) theater yesterday and would love to hear your thoughts.
If the year end show is a big review of the year with no new reviews, it should be twice as long, or twice as long with a new movie review and the other half all that other stuff.
How can Peter be the murderer given what happens at 8:26 -- if he was yelling into the phone and a second later appears and talks to her, how did she not notice him yelling nearby?
Some documentary I watched a few years ago on Horror films claimed a 1960s movie called Peeping Tom was the first slasher movie seems know one can really decide.
I personally disagree but I will say that if you combine certain aspects of 2001 with aspects of Chainsaw, you would have a slasher. 2001 has the methodical, almost plodding atmosphere and pacing of a slasher but no silent, hulking, masked killer. Chainsaw has the hulking, mostly silent, masked killer, but a very erratic tone and pace that don't fit the slasher tag. Just my thoughts to throw into the discussion.✌✌😉
Ray Milland scream NEVER fails to make me laugh, I'm so happy whenever you sneak that clip in these episodes
Dang, they didn't comment on my favorite line: "Was that some pervert?" "No, it's the Mormon Tabernacle Choir doing their annual dirty phone call."
This is one of those few movies that really nails that Christmas feeling.
No surprise at all he also directed a Christmas Story
It's so weird watching Black Christmas when you're a student at the University of Toronto and recognize most of the filming locations...
+Anna Heffernan Yeah. And also because the killer has never been caught...
The bat gag gets me Everytime
the other movie is "When a Stranger Calls" from inside the house
+Mark H They're looking for one before Black Christmas (1974)
+0mink0 there is no film before black christmas with that plot. black christmas inspired "when a stranger calls." a couple of real life murders and an urban legend inspired black christmas
Love this show!! Speaking of Tennessee Williams and The Glass Menagerie this movie give a whole new meaning to "Gentleman Caller "
There is a phone call after each murder. The last shot of the movie clearly shows that Claire has been killed, as the sound of a phone ringing can clearly be heard. I really enjoyed this video. The line about Art Hindle looking like a tall Peter Dinklage was absolutely hilarious.
You just blew my mind! Love it! The ending of that film was masterful!
They do imply the killer is still in the attic. The film ends with camera pulling out to a long shot of the house and the credits roll. If you keep watching, in a few moments you hear the phone begin ringing again. What a nice touch, they just don't make 'em like this anymore, kids!
So glad you guys did this movie, I watch it as part of a holiday triple feature along with Gremlins and Silent Night Deadly Night every year.
I thought I'd seen all of these, but somehow managed to miss this one. So glad I finally got to see it! I think it's one of my favorites now too. Thank you so much!

Thanks guys, I'm now scared shitless there's someone in my attic!! Great review and have a great Christmas guys!
Yes! I'm so happy you guys watched this movie! I watched it myself for the first time not too long ago and I loved it.
I love, love, looove "Black Christmas"! It is the one that says, "The call's coming from inside the house," :). It's one of only a few films that freaks me out. Love it!
i love that you guys also love blues brothers, it's in my top 10 hands down. that whole country bar scene gets me every time
Thanks for uploading this at almost 4:20, it's almost as if you knew!
I feel very honored to be the last "Seen It" of 2015.
Also: Whenever someone asks me my favorite movie, I immediately say "Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie" Seen it?
+SpecialQue85 Not quite the last. We have one more show on December 31st.
+BlameSociety liar!
jk I love u don't hurt me
This episode was spot on on every front. Ending the year on a high note guys!
"When a Stranger Calls" is the movie you are thinking of Matt
I love this show! Merry Christmas to you both :)
Excellent as always
Matt, you were right about "...if." The black and white segments weren't supposed to be black and white, it was just that the footage was damaged in some way before the cutting of the film.

Met Tommy Wiseau during a screening of The Room at The Oriental.
Oh hai PlaidRocker
Y'all are my favorite of TH-cam right now. Can you put out 5x the content please?
Requiem for a Dream actually played at the Downer when it was first released. I still remember going to see it there.
I agree with Matt about the problems with plausibility in found footage films, but the interesting thing about that sub-genre is that even though they've had relatively short-lived popularity in movie-making terms, the premise has become much more plausible in the last couple of years. Matt's reaction at 18:10 is still hilarious to me...
7:00 Not the Festivus pole!
It's possible this movie was set somewhere in the upper pennisula of Michigan. It fits the criteria of having a large body of water to the south.
I've seen Sgt. Nash ( Doug McGrath ) in SO many movies ( Outlaw Josey Wales,The Gauntlet, Porky's, Pale Rider, The Rocketeer, etc.); he must be put in the That Guy Hall of Fame ASAP !!
The most appropriate movie to see at The Downer Theater? Easy! That would be Happiness!
Please watch on the show "The Possession" by Andzrej Zulawski. It's a fantastic horror movie with some horrifying images and probably one of the most powerful female perfomances in the history of cinema by Isabelle Adjani. I think you'll love it. It's a really deep film with adult themes.
I think Craig might of hide a few extra sips if the "holiday cheer" on this one. But still a great episode.
They Might Be Giants record in the back! First time I've ever recognized the album art in this show!
Have you guys seen boogie nights it is one of my favorite Paul Thomas Anderson films and it has a great performance from mark wahlberg
Great episode guys! I will now leave my bi-weekly Seen It comment...have you seen Mary & Max!? I'm assuming since you haven't mentioned it in Seen It yet, it's going to be a future episode. Awesome! :D
Aaaaaanother great episode guys! Keep it up!
Craig, I belive the other movie with the infamous line you are thinking of is When a Stranger Calls Back
merry Christmas Matt and Craig. your both awesome!
24:14 horrifying sound effect
also, claude's a great cat name
also also, merry christmas
The other film where the killer is calling from inside the house is When a Stranger Calls 1979
Such a great episode! So many Milwaukee references! :-)
"It Happened on 5th Avenue" is a good Xmas movie. Frank Capra was supposed to direct it, but he blew it off to direct IAWL.
i need to watch the lost weekend, you keep referencing the bat lol
Nice "Psycho Killer" reference.

Well, I guess we're ch-
aaaaaiiiiiined.
Nice Glass Menagerie reference guys.
sweet "They Might Be Giants" LP in the background
oh christina, do tell!
If you've never heard of such a daring rendition of "Daisy Bell" then you've never heard of Mark Mothersbaugh's Daisy Bell by Mark Ryden.
12:25 That was terrifying!
Craig was thinking of A Stranger Calls
From Scream 4: 1st slasher film is Peeping Tom released about 4 months before Psycho
Have you guys seen krampus? If u did what did u think about it. I thought it was a fun holiday horror that won't leave u sleepless but will still creep u outthe right amount.
I would love for you guys to watch a Gregg Araki film like Mysterious Skin or Nowhere.
lyricsfromsweden much prefer Doom Generation.
Peeping Tom was the first slasher movie
Did the series finally Godwin's Law @17:30?
Is the astor in st kilda still going?
Watch the re-make. They actually delve into an origin of the killer
Have you seen Long Weekend(1978). It's a Unique horror movie where the killer is mother nature.
Craig gets 1000 points for referencing the Glass Managerie, AND correctly so!
Seen It? Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens! I watched it at an early screening at my local (sold out) theater yesterday and would love to hear your thoughts.
1.- would you guys consider watching movies "made for" you tube on your show?
Matt's killer voice sounds like Kevin from the office
If I were in a Cloverfield-type situation, you can be abso-fuckin-lutely certain I'd have my phone out filming that shit.
They're Probably Really Tall! An Ice Cube's Odds in Hades!
have you guys seen After Life? What did u think of it
what started all this, whats the lore of Welcome to the Basement, the backstory, the behind the scenes
14:35 I can't decide if that's a really clever reference to Marilyn Manson's song "Disposable Teens" or not.
Saoirse is pronounced Seersha guys. She is amazing talent.
I saw the original Blair Witch at the Downer. It was an...experience.
Matt, didja ever dang see that Batman: Mask of the Phantasm?
If the year end show is a big review of the year with no new reviews, it should be twice as long, or twice as long with a new movie review and the other half all that other stuff.
Favorite Black Comedy "Eating Raoul" Seen it?
Apparently it's possible to get type casted ad the police officer in slasher films
Have you guys seen the Neil Breen film Double Down? It's mind-blowingly terrible, and truly amazing. A work of genius. Better then The Room.
you guys should watch Hausu
Hey! Here's one I'd love to know if you've seen: "Twice Upon A Time"
It's an out there, wacky, and well done, animated movie from '83.
Seen it??
Have you guys seen The Town That Dreaded Sundown?
Have you guys seen all the Evil dead movies? Not including the recent one. Would love to hear you riff on them and hear your opinions
I’d argue this is more of a giallo film than a slasher.
Always with the bats!
+nicksynet Oh, I forgot. That came out the year before Psycho. Ruined Michael Powell's career. Pretty good movie, though. Very ahead of its time.
I'd argue that the Texas Chainsaw Massacre would be the first slasher
