Just found myself singing this wandering around the kitchen. As you do and had to look it up to remind myself that I learned to do school. Many years ago in Nottinghamshire in England when I was about five!5 50 yrs later, i still know the words!😊 Shame I can't remember now. Why I went into the next room!!😂😊
I am French and I remember a memory. I was in the metropolitan and there was a match between french and Irish teams (Rugby) closed to Paris. I have sung this song with the Irish supporters. It was amazing !
This song and the Clementine song made it to Africa too. We used to sing them during music lessons in primary school and they were so sad...so emotive. Never forgot them.
So true. I often saw Molly's sad ghost wheeling her barrow in my mind. Saw the unfairness of Clementine's demise and felt the betrayal when soon enough her young sister took over her love. Sad ..
And, with the words of this haunting old melody, the days of my youth fade. T'was, from a time when school bells rang, and my one joy was choir class with Mr. McDonald. Although The Night, My Grandfathers Clock, Lord Lovel, and many more rang out from the voices of that youthful class. Our short of stature teacher was a handsome young man with a Beatles hair cut. All the girls were smitten with him. Oh, how I thought I could sing, but a dear friend of mine, Carol, helped me to see I could not. Mind you, it was in a considerate and loving way, so as not to crush my spirit. I don't know where she got off to after school, but I will never forget how brave she was, to be honest with me.
I was reintroduced to this song after a long time through a basic music book for trombone. I only picked up playing trombone after not playing for 50+ years. I had to hear the song as it is song to get the feel of the melody right. This version by the Dubliners is music to my ears.
I saw Molly Malone’s statue in Dublin last week and we (my tour group and guide) had to sing this song at her monument. The tour guide sang the verses, while we (my tour group and myself) sang the chorus.

"fishmonger" ....wierd sounding word ....makes me think of "whoremonger" ...what is the "monger"? Seller of? Or lover of? Is a whoremonger a pimp or a john?
My British adoptive father has been gone for over 20 years but I am sobbing remembering him singing this to my brother and I before bed as kids.....😢
Mom used to sing this song to me. I’m American, but apparently this song made it to The U.S. intact through my heritage. Thank you for this post.
My mother too and I am French
I learned it in elementary school music class in Pennsylvania! Maybe not the final verse though.
My mom sang it to me too.
I learned this song in Jamaica over 40 years ago

Learned this song back home in the Caribbean 🇹🇹 as a child lol. I started randomly singing it today and decided to look it up lol.
This song made it to sub Saharan Africa. Accra, Ghana to be specific. Surely! Music is a universal language.
I'm glad you like it. Check out Sinead O Connors version if you are curious

They originated from very rough times in a hard period in history. Music is so emotive and beautiful- it makes you feel their sorrow indeed

I remember it from my school music book. That must be how it made it to all corners of the English speaking world.
From my primary three class. I love this song without limits and always remember with kindness the teacher who taught me this song!

I remember singing this song in middle school. I couldn’t remember the name of it for the life of me. The third verse always was in my head.
I heard this on MASH when a USO troupe had a short stay there. Karen Landry had a sweet voice.
