I thought this was going to be a break down of "RoadBlasters" but I was pleasantly surprised to find there is a game that I have never heard about. Another great video.
I remember this game for the SEGA CD me and my friends had a blast playing it! This video really takes me back to those days thank you sooo much for the fond memories😃👍❤
I never tired of playing this. Loved it. The tone was set by that opening mega cd song and then the ending felt meloncholy. Anyone remember the cheats? One was level select and one was for watching it as a movie with no HUD visible. Think one cheat was pushing A about 30 times in the options.... Might be wrong though
I remember this game being named here in England as Road Avenger, i knew someone in my class at school who had a Sega Mega CD machine and had the CD copy with the case and box art to prove it to us all. Thanks for all the childhood memories Patman and keep up the good work, can you do a history video on a game called Fighting Mania Hokuto no Ken from Konami.
Laser disc games have their place in video gaming anthology. Either you loved playing them or not, one thing is for sure, they're a piece of video game history that will never be forgotten. Great video Patman!!!
Like many here, i also remember this game. I was very impressed. Now i never had this game myself, i didn't even own a console back then. I got to play this at a friend's house.
When I was 12 I had a sega CD and sonic CD and all I wanted for my birthday was This and Time Gal. Screenshots. Dont judge me, I had the magazines. I got them both - small town canada - my mom ordered them from a magazine. Road Blaster had no CD in it, my mom had to write them a letter. 6 weeks later it showed up in my mailbox in a CD Slip. I checked that box every day after school. Every time we ordered from that shop Id check the box every day after school. When I opened it up and saw a game inside I was so excited haha
My god I played through this every freaking day on sega cd after high school holy fuck just thinking about it makes my heart pump. I wouldn't get that feeling again until the main desert storm chase in Fury Road.
We had a Thayer's Quest in our local arcade. I literally never saw anyone play it. Despite this, the game's keyboard was hopelessly worn, with what I assume to be a protective layer essentially gone. I watched the intro many times, and eventually worked my way through a let's play of the game on TH-cam. Definitely the kind of game that simply would never have existed without Dragon's Lair.
I've always loved laserdisc games ever since the first time I saw Dragon's Lair in the arcade when I was around six or seven years old. I had this one on SegaCD and remember thinking how awesome it was to be playing a laserdisc game at home. Amazing video as always Patman!
I never knew about the Double Dragon cameo. Cool! I played this on the Sega CD. It was a lot of fun at the time. My brothers and I also had a good time trying to figure out the lyrics to the song; there were some lines we just couldn't get. Thanks for the flashback!
My favorite part of this game is when you drive through the mall, up the stairs, through a window, before crashing through the back of a helicopter and making it explode. This game is awesome.
Great video! I'm glad to see you covering this game. I remember seeing it on the Sega CD once at a gaming shop way back when. Somehow I never did manage to play the original in the arcades since the LD based games came and went pretty fast in the 80s!
I had no idea the arcade version looked and sounded so much better than the Sega CD version. Crazy. I might have to go back and play it. It's hard to truly convey to younger gamers how absolutely mindblowing this game was coming off the SNES and Genesis. My memory of playing this game is still pretty vivid. It was a rainy afternoon and my mom had allowed me to rent it. When we got home she started watching Oprah and I didn't come put of my room for ages. Eventually my brother saw me playing the game and tried helping me out with the harder parts. I remember feeling distinctly engaged and immersed because of the visuals and pace of the game despite the limited gameplay control.
Data East also released the LD arcade game "Bega's Battle", which I saw in person in an airport arcade when I was barely old enough to remember things. It made an impression. If you want to see why, go look it up on TH-cam. You'll see the attract mode. It shows a guy's face melting, complete with eyeballs popping out. All footage in the game was stolen from a movie called Harmageddon.
I believe it was actually licensed legally! But yes, all footage came from Genma Taisen Harmageddon... with character designs by Katsuhiro Otomo (creator of Akira)
@@JustinSevenTwo I can believe that it was licensed since it was after all a Japanese game, but the nature of the usage of the footage, especially with the comically awful English dub and script ("last of the Earth warriors", "provide a barrier shield"), still very much smacks of what happened to Lupin in Cliff Hanger among others. They were just completely making stuff up, and I doubt the Japanese team had anything at all to do with the English. Of course the reason I brought the game up was because it was legitimately startling what I was seeing in an arcade cabinet, in a public venue. There's zero doubt in my mind that it was the most violent video game to exist when it was released, just because of that clip. Even back then, I found myself wondering how things would have turned out if, against all odds, that game had somehow ended up being really popular. (Rather than a blatant effort to make a quick buck off the LD craze started by Dragon's Lair.) Somebody would have noticed the attract mode.
@@Asterra2 Yeah I'd definitely agree with that... Really not a great use for that film or footage! Really just a backdrop for a second rate vertical shooter
Man, I don't know how I missed this one back in the day at the arcades! Of course, I never did like these sorta point and click games anyway. I do like the anime style though. Thanks as always Patman! It's always a nice surprise when I get your notifications!
Dude this is one of my favorite games of all time . I didn't realize it was Road avenger till later I. The video . I used to play this constantly at a local video game store at the time . They let you play any game for like ba hour four a dollar . And they Booth s with all the consoles back then
I'm lost in your channel. Such a shame I never seen it in my recommendations. I'm amazed by your productivity and by the quality of your history vids. I'm especially fond of watching this particular one since I love this game a lot. Thank you, kindly
Would really like to see this and Cobra Command get released on a modern console. Dragon's Lair has gotten rereleased like a billion times, so it's not like there's no love for classic laser disc games. Thanks for the video! Love all your content!
If cheesecake wish lists were to happen...? An all new rebuild in Unreal Engine 5 from the ground up and the original LD-Rom dump as a bonus extra for the PC, PS5, Switch and XBOX edition 😀
It would cost next to nothing to release those games on DVD or BluRay. Im surprised its never been done. They were both released on original playstation, so theres that.
@@swampdonkey4919 I'm amazed that more LD games weren't released on BluRay or DVD. It seems like it wouldn't be *that* hard - though I have no idea of the process of converting LD games to DVD-video whatsoever, so for all I know it could be a much more difficult process than imagined! 😲
The director of the actual anime footage here is Hideki Takayama. He actually worked on three LD games as far as I know: this, Cobra Command and Freedom Fighter.
I loved it on Sega CD! It felt a lot more interactive than any other movie of its kind by far. Oh, and there is no shooting in the game. I mean, you don't shoot. That cursor that appears when you hold turbo down is to aim the car at the target to hit the bad guys with your car.
just a note: Toei is pronounced like "toy." They're famous for many franchises over the years including Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon, Super Sentai, and One Piece. otherwise, amazing work as always and I look forward to the next video!

I liked the ones that were basically illustrated choose your own adventures, but think it was a miss to not have some comicbook artist do a superhero version. Even if doing a DC or Marvel character they could've created an original hero. Who knows, it might have gone on to be famous enough to be a franchise character still going in all sorts of media.

Yeah! The one by Konami, right?! I saw some playthroughs and really liked it. The bloopers were hilarious! Its animation seems like the stuff TMS was doing with DiC Animation in the early 80s! Revolutionary Concepts did the HD release on iOS. Their port of Cobra Command HD is also excellent. I wish they were able to get to Time Gal. The iOS games no longer work since Revolutionary Concepts never updated the app to 32bit so they stopped working. Would be nice if someone open-sourced or ported it to 32bit.
Road Blaster/Road Avenger is quite tense for a laserdisc game. Talk about the need for speed. Can't wait for you to do Time Gal next. BTW, it is pronounced "TOE-A", not "TOW-A" for Toei Animation. Just sayin' ;)
Oh boy these it's one of my favorites Q,T,E, games almost Time Gal AND ninja Hayate AND dragón's lair trilogy i'have these wonderful piece of cult in one double pack whit thunder storm another Best instant clasicc of cult, for the Playstation import, very good work AND greetings from mexico comrade 😃👍🇲🇽
Another quality review. Quick question--do you remember the name of this racing game in which you could choose an 18-wheeler, F1 race car, or standard car that scrolled upwards like Bump n' Jump EXCEPT you were wholly dependent on obtaining "energy" packs to continue the game? When energy is depleted the game audible tells you "I'm sorry to say, but you've run out of energy!" It is definitely late 80s and had a Neo-Geo feeling but pre-dates NG.

I just can't get into this game. I can't understand it. Glad u dropped a new video while you at the Midwest classic. Happy trails
That would be fantastic
Road Blaster/Road Avenger is quite tense for a laserdisc game. Talk about the need for speed. Can't wait for you to do Time Gal next.
BTW, it is pronounced "TOE-A", not "TOW-A" for Toei Animation. Just sayin' ;)

0:30 That’s from Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro.
