The sad part about Chris Pratt voicing Garfield is that Frank Welker said he would’ve been willing to return to voicing Garfield if the filmmakers asked him to. They didn’t even consider asking him at all
as if I needed more reasons to not watch that awful movie! what a shame!
Dude..chris pratt just always sounds like chris pratt, he doesnt try to be the character:(
Because corporations use famous actors for trailers and depend so much on that, that they don’t even give a thought on professional voice actors.
@@RawTimeeand that makes it so wild when people say he’s actually great at voice acting, like be real guys, he’s passable at best.
@@astrowolvez like it depends on the character. He should not have played mario or garfield because they both have distinct voices. If your just going to talk normally for every character you do, theres no point in voice acting.
taking the laziest fella in the world and sending him off on quests is such an odd idea. let my boy sleep and eat his lasagna in peace.
As it’s said he tries so hard to be lazy because laziness is his hobby.
Even as someone who likes the first live action movie, I agree
oy know what I'd willing watch a 2h movie of garfiled just doing his thing
eating lasagna, sleeping, watching TV rinse repeat
until John gets home, and that's the end of the movie
just perfect brainrot to disassociate to
So, like a Napoleon dynamite esk plot?
Pick on Jon and Odiy maybe cost Jon a date with the veterinarian maybe get Lyman in there but keep it only 12 blocks at most
I think the obvious answer here is to put Garfield in a gritty medical mystery show with a good dose of comic relief
"The results came back, and if I'm being honest, it's pretty grim... it's terminal."
(Long pause)
"That's Monday for you"
only if he plays across from Doctor Mario
I have 7 Garfield tattoos and an unhinged amount of vintage plushies taking over my house but I genuinely don't know why I like him. I hate literally all the Garfield media, it's unfunny and dull and embarrassing, but I just fucking love Garfield so much. I would die for that little guy.
I like garfield, only because I grew up reading the original comics, and watching garfield and friends, you know, the garfield media that is actually good.
could it be…. the power of an ND brain?
@@Azet_KMN I think if you have seven tattoos of the same character you have a ND brain no matter what lol
@@craig2196 yea you’re right
Those old movies feel really wholesome to me because of how John treats Garfield and Odie like his kids
*Jon
@@robbiewalker2831 🤓
Fun fact: the reason only Bill Murray ever voiced Garfield because he misread the name on the script as Joel *Coen*. He thought Garfield was a Coen brothers movie when it was actually written by Joel *Cohen*.
And then he proceeded to play Garfield again for the second film
@@EpikBirbhis contract set him up to do the first film and any sequels after the fact
HOT TAKE; Garfield is one of the cats of all time
Hot take: Garf
Hot take: ield
Hot take:
Incorrect.
He is both timeless and spaceless.
Big if true
A few years ago I watched Garfield’s Pet Force while high, this was when I first started smoking so I was pretty high, and I genuinely thought the characters were also high.
Because they were
I'm about to do that rn
Not a single Garfield movie is certified fresh?? That's insane and obviously a problem, lol. His old animated television specials are fairly good and well-recieved.
The new one started with a 70 on rotten tomatoes but it quickly dropped to like a 50 a few days later
Back in the early 90s there was going to be a Garfield animated feature called “Garfield’s Judgement Day” that was about 30% done in production including the original voices and songs by Ed Bogas and Desirée Goyette. Disney and a couple other companies turned it down and cancelled the production because it was too dark for children on a Garfield movie. So Jim Davis decided to make it a comic book.
“Garfield’s Judgement Day” is also where the direction of having animals verbally speak in the Garfieldverse became a mainstay in modern non-comic based Garfield material since 2004. Although Garfield and Friends is guilty of the inconsistency in the Garfield logic of communication, as there are some Garfield characters that can speak with their mouths moving, rather than Telepathically.
I did not notice that Todd had the Garfield plush TAPED to his body the entire video until like the last few minutes of it.
Thanks, now I can't unsee it.
I like to interpret Garfield Gets Real more of a crossover between a fever dream and a period piece - Jim Davis thought of this idea when newspaper comic strips were more relevant, before the changes in publishing, and I feel he had planned to have more real cameos (maybe an Avengers-like crossover) but couldn't secure the licenses
But all along, the true Garfield was really the friends we made along the way
You mean the *and* Friends we made along the way
I still can’t believe there was a Garfield’s nightmare ride
Yea! It was a dark ride so alot happened in there
Yea! It was a dark ride so alot happened in there
Years ago I was sick and hit a channel playing Garfield's 9 Lives. Never having watched it, I did not expect the emotional journey that came with it. Diana's Piano hit me so hard that I couldn't think about it for weeks without tearing up. Having a loving pet always by your side through so many different stages of life and the inevitable, heart-breaking experience of making their last days as comfortable as possible before saying goodbye. It's beautiful, but it hurts.
bro, he will never be the same again
Appreciate the retrospect. You really made me understand why i remember Garfield and Friends so fondly and why everything else was a big blur of garbage.
I LOVE 9 lives, and I agree, it's the one short that truly deserved an Emmy, I was obsessed with the comic as a kid
39:35 I dunno. Slapstick is a major source of humor in the comic. My favorite comic is when Garfield is hanging on the screen door.
The panther movie genuinely scared the shit out of me as a kid.
Heya! Really good video, glad you covered early garf cuz its genuinely really good! Its reputation got thrown in the gutter because of the garfield movies, with the most recent one being a fun watch but not nearly as good as the classic ones, and the live action one being the spawn of satan.
I would reccomend watching garfield and friends, its honestly a really fun time and the best thing to come out of garfield by a long shot. Would love to see a video covering it!
Garfield isn't a character, he's an idea. He hates Mondays, he loves lasagna. He's sarcastic and he's lazy. He's a big guy. He's a house cat, but he's also a singer. He's a dancer. He's a detective. He's a prince, he's a chef. He's a cowboy, he's a pirate, he's a leader, he's a prisoner. He isn't funny, he IS funny. He's being buried alive! He's a caretaker. He's Chris Pratt, Lorenzo Music, Bill Murray, AND Frank Welker. He's a superhero, he's saving Odie from a television host, he's watching Odie fall into a volcano. He's fighting a panther, he's a romantic, he's a brother, he's the son to a mother, father, AND a Jon. He yearns for your validation and he is surreal. He is emerging from the ocean! He is BEGGING for release he is being airdropped onto a kaiju. He's escaping on a helicopter, he's fleeing into our reality. He's facing impossible odds! He's listening to one final song, and he is struck down, but he is revived, for he is GOD. A being of unfathomable depths. A vessel of creativity. But Garfield, above all else, you're the star of a comic strip.
Yeah, people don't realize a lot of these older cartoons aren't really character based. As in the character of a ...well, character isn't important the character itself is the medium of expression, not a part of the medium. if that makes any sense.
I didn't really consume much Garfield media as a kid yet this is still one of the most wholesome things ever to me.
I have never watched anything Garfield related and yet I somehow have very clear memories of the entire plots of Garfield gets real and Garfield’s fun fest. I can guarantee I’ve never seen these movies and yet somehow I know them…
I grew up with teletoon retro (I was born in 2006) and loooved garfield and friends as well as orson's farm. One of my most distinct memories of watching the show was bawling my eyes out over Garfield's Nine Lives 😭
between the ages of seven and nine i used to go to the library every week with my grandpa to get garfield comics. i recognize a lot of the shorts bc i read the comic versions and never knew there were tv versions too. my eight year old self was obsessed with garfield in paradise and had no idea how problematic it was
Garfield the Movie is a childhood classic always will be one of my most favorite Garfield things maybe a Hot Take but man theres a charm to that movie
The newest garfield movie and the whole being in a blatant modern setting with product placement abundant, makes me sad that nobody sees the potential of keeping garfield a 70s/80s period piece smh
My favorite iteration of Garfield on screen is the Cartoon Network show which wasn't covered in this video but it's a really fun watch imo
This is a video I didn’t know I needed. Fucking Garfield
please dont...
This entire video is beautiful, Garfield was my idol as a child. Very nostalgic
This enire video is sooooooooooo deeply important to me, thank you for your service king
Bro really summarized Garfield Gets a Life and didn't say a word on Jon owning the dance floor
Jokes aside, this was very fun to watch- would certainly love to hear your thoughts on Garfield and Friends!
In the original version of The Garlfied, everyone had a cat just like Garfield, but the humans couldn't handle it. Entire crops were lost.
I was not expecting you to say Fred Jones as Frank Welker's most notable role when he's literally Megatron.
I was actually excited for chris pratt as garfield, because with chris pratt's voice, he could sound more like lorenzo music, if he tried... I'm dissapointed with how it turned out, because instead of actually trying to sound like garfield, chris pratt instead made garfield sound like chris pratt.
80s Garfield is undeniably my favorite version of the character. There's just something about him from that era that no other incarnation has been able to surpass.
I actually have the Pet Force novel with Super Garfield. Pretty silly and good fun.
Bro Dianas Piano made me CRY when i first watched it. Something about that one just got me.
considering how long gets real was being written, i think the real world was absolutely meant to be live action but they werent willing to do it due to the reception of the live action films
Or not enough budget.
@@worthybutter2004 garfield is one of the highest earning merchandise brands in the world, i think they could spare it. i have to imagine live action is cheaper than animation anyway?
That clip of Chris Pratt doing all of those voice was so hilarious!
Before you even said it I thought, “That sounds like House.”
Oh god I remember seeing Garfield gets real and feeling so weird, like WTF am I watching!!
Awesome sauce
I remember the Garfield movie being one of my favourite movies when I was younger and I’d watch it almost every day. And the second one too tbh
24:54 WHY WASN'T THIS THE PLOT IN THE FIRST PLACE?!
Seriously I love that!
I genuinely think Jinx was initially meant to be Garfield’s mother but they couldn’t work out a story that would end without her or Vic being seen in a bad light.
Also I could’ve sworn Arlene was in attendance at the birthday party at the very end?
Found myself here after LS Mark's Garfield binge, and I'm really glad I did!! I enjoyed your more in depth takes about each one, and especially about the character as a whole. My mom loves Garfield so I interacted with a lot of the older stuff as a child, and growing up I totally forgot why I used to like Garfield. Thanks so much for reminding me!!
This video makes me wanna make a Garfield zine series
Put me on the list
NEW TODDY!!! I also think they did a damn good job with the CGI, especially for 2004!!
You look kinda like a real life Parappa the Rapper
I absolutely LOVED the Garfield movies from 2004 and 2006, epecially a tail of two kitties. Then again, I was 5-7 years old, and I haven't seen them since
You definitely unlocked a memory for me with grafild gets real for sure like i haven't thought about this movie in years
As a kid who grew up with the weird 2000's comic Garfield movies, no, we didn't think Garfield was a hotdog loving cat with a team of marketers who speaks freely to Jon. You underestimate the sleeper Garfield advertising. (also helps that there was a Garfield show with the same animation style that didn't use this continuity). Also you are completely right with those movies being too confusing, as a kid I didn't even realize there were alternate universes, I just thought Garfield became an actor and also had a superhero twin.
Yeahhh teenage mutant ninja turtles is getting a show, a game, and a sequel, we’re going to be eating well!
I love it
The recap of the old shorts just beat me over the head with nostalgia. I wasn't even born when they were made, I'm 23, but DAMN i remember watching those when i was little.
You don’t hate Mondays, you hate capitalism.
I think you unlocked a core memory with Garfield Gets Real. I'm not sure I wanted to remember it, because I realize that it was the moment my eight-year-old brain realized films are made by people and therefore more often bad than good.
didn't know i needed this video until it was here. had no memory of those early garfield cartoons until i saw the clips and felt SO MUCH fondness. that disgusting plushie being literally birthed from it's packaging was very disturbing to watch. thank you for your service
There was a time period where Cartoon Network had Garfield's Fun Fest looped on repeat.
And that was how I got introduced to the franchise. To this day I am still very nostalgic for it.
fr one of THE BEST youtubers right now
31:39 i just want to appreciate how this guy looks
This made me revisit my old garf cartoon disk i had as a kid, i was so confused why i didnt remember the episodes past the first 2 mentioned, but i refound my disk and apparently it ONLY has Here comes Garf, Garf on the town, and Garf gets a life in it. so strange, i thought it had more episodes, but it has been wayy too long since i last watched them i guess. either way, seeing the first two you mentioned again that are included on this disk brought me some insane nostalgia. im like 23 and a half now, and i watched these when i was like 7, probably younger. this disk is old asf, likely passed down to me from mom haha
hell yeah, another channel to binge watch
this video is criminally underrated, It was so well done!!!
who knew jim davis was such a freak. good for him!
Not Chris Pratt doing the same voice 3 times
I have been waiting for this
Garfield Gets Real was the only Garfield movie my blockbuster had. To be extremely specific about the era this happened in. It was a fever dream then. I had to rent it a few times just to make sure that’s really what the movie was supposed to look like.
finally another toddyboya drop
they could make an entire horror film about the guy Jon kept captive in his basement
This is my first video of yours I’ve watched, five seconds in, I was not expecting this voice. I’m somehow even more invested?
Todd!!! You gotta upload more often man, I've been going through withdrawals 😂
this video was a work of art
I think CGI ages like milk but i agree 2004 Garfield looks good still
44:12
It all started .... When I was born.
so glad you freed him at the end
I grew up in the 80s, so I adore the specials. Back when watching cartoons on a weeknight was an event!
The first movie was one of my first sentient memories as a kid and i loved it. I still am pretty fond of it lmao
And some more of my earliest memories are these shorts
I had them compiled on eaother DVD or VCR , i cant remember. But i remember all these little songs and animation's and plots. Ugh what a throw back 😭
You probably gave the most fair reviews of all the movies. I even forgot about the TV cartoon movie specials, and I grew up watching Garfield and Friends. I don't know, Garfield is kind of a boomer - gen-x sort of cartoon. At least the majority of the era that Garfield got fleshed out the most was when boomers were parents and gen-x was the kids. So much of Garfield plays on those dynamics with Jon being the eternal bachelor with his pet dog and cat being his family. Sure, Liz is a love interest for Jon, but it never goes anywhere, other than adding a date scenario, or something else for Garfield to comment about regarding Jon's ineptitude. Cats do seem to act in this way, that they're the only real competent creature in the house, and they don't like being proved otherwise. Obviously, that's mostly our anthropomorphic concept because we don't really know how animals think and feel, but sometimes, especially with our attachment to certain animals, we can at least imagine what they're thinking or feeling. Unfortunately our storytellers making movies these days don't seem to see or understand these aspects and dynamics between humans with each other, as well as humans with animals. It's sad that the current Garfield is mostly a nostalgia cash grab. The story itself has potential, as the cartoon movie special showed decades earlier, but it sounds like the current movie didn't take advantage of the aspects it could have let play out more. I feel bad for Chris Pratt getting the criticism he got, as he didn't do all that bad a job. He's no Elonso Music or Bill Murray, and to be fair, the people involved with the movie that finally had Bill Murray do Garfield's voice blew one of the best opportunities they had to do a Garfield movie real justice. Music and Murray sound so familiar that I used to think Murray was Garfield's voice actor. I highly doubt there will be another shot at getting Murray to do Garfield's voice again. Pratt should get another shot, but I wouldn't blame him foe moving on from that, especially if they can't do any better in utilizing him than they have in this current movie.
Lorenzo Music voiced Bill Murray's character in the Ghostbusters cartoon. Perfect circle.
Also, Bill Murray signed onto be in TWO Garfield movies because he thought they were being written by Joel Cohen who wrote Fargo and not Joel Cohen who wrote Evan Almighty and Daddy Day CAMP... So if you ever feel stupid, remember that Bill Murray made two CGI cat movies without reading the script because he wanted to work with one of the Cohen brothers...
29:48 I always knew him as the voice of megatron but it was this year that I found out he voiced Garfield in this movie and the modern show
I got introduced to Garfield as a character through the 2008 Garfield show and I really enjoyed it at the time, I watched all the movies you mentioned because of how much I liked that show but I have no idea what the general reception of it was
Only Todd can make me watch a 55 minute video about a cartoon cat.😂
I love Garfield and friends
i love love the way garfield looks in the shorts, perfect garfie design
31:50 That's no
"workplace harassment dog! That's GRIMM! From Mother goose and Grimm comic! You kids today, I tell ya! Lol. Seriously, one of the more enjoyable comic strips of my childhood. It's really weird.
I might have nostalgia tinted glasses but I think Garfield and friends is still good. Besides that I love the TV movie specials. I don't think I've seen other than the Halloween and Christmas shorts in a decade. I am sorry but I have to see the 9 lives and on the town before I can finish this video. I don't really care for anything past the 90s era Garfield.
I feel like quinton reviews would like this video…
Oh my god- the nine lives of Garfield predicted how Garfield would become…
Gaslight
Gatekeep
Garfield
Garfields pet force is actually not bad it combines 2 comic genres together
its todd
I have a confession to make, I actually like Garfield Funfest...a bit. It was the first animated garfield film I watched as a kid and I remember watching it like 5 times in a row once lol
Ugh that new movie sounds like a nightmare where i cant choose which is worst. The barrage of product placements, the cringeworthy plot, the "hey there fellow kids. Us young people use our phones all the time right" attempts at relatability crap or Crisp Rat everyones favourite non actor.
I kinda enjoy Garfield Gets Real tbh just for the sheer absurdity of it. I have a soft spot for films that are just bonkers and it slots itself perfectly into that category, alongside the other movies animated in a similar vein.
Genuine agree about the garfield films. Garfield movie plots should happen around Garfield, while Garfield is doing his own thing and he resolves the plot by outsmarting it without trying. Honestly it should almost be play out like the Beavis and Butthead movie. Honestly the best Garfield media outside the comics is those OG short films and the cartoon Garfield and friends.
The fact that Garfield cart was brought up and not the guy who has over 50,000+ hours playing that game made me sad
Remember Lyman… no ok
He got cannibalized by jon
i like your style of making videos and the focus you set in your reviews :)
halfway through the Gets Real section I realised I've actually seen it before, many many many many years ago. the reaction theater scene triggered memories i thought long buried.
22:42 Garfield already gave his motivation in the movie if you remember he said hey nobody gets to abused Audi except me
