  • Get out that orange and fire up the paint brush. Bright orange pumpkins are fun to paint. Join me as I tackle this group of fine specimens and demonstrate a few background wash techniques such as using back runs to your advantage.

    The irrational background and the low key lighting really lended to the Halloween feel. Thanks for the playful inspiration

    I am so happy this showed up today! I learned physics! LOL! I love the blooming background! When I was starting out painting with watercolor, I watched a tutorial from a woman who said that beginner should not mix more than 2 colors of watercolor! Just about killed me. Luckily, I didn't hold fast to that "fact". Thank you from Texas!

    I was really happy to hear you talk about different artists and how there are different ways to create art. All it can take is one snobby artist to drive someone (especially a younger someone) away from painting altogether... It took me years to want to get back into art after a really crappy, year long painting "apprenticeship" when I was 18. I'm glad to have found your channel, it's really rekindled a love of art and, most especially, watercolor.

      +Shannon Poehlman Very glad to hear it and well said about snobby artists. I'm all for passion for one's own art and style but when it become a "my way or the highway" thing, thats where I part company.

    An artist after my own heart! I've encountered th art snobs too but from a different angle: "indirect painting? Who does that anymore?" I tried alla prima & was so frustrated. You do beautiful work. I just finished painting an orange 1966 Dodge Polara in acrylics. I mixed several different colors into the orange for the darker and lighter areas. One main reason I don’t is because I usually don’t use “a color.” They’re complex mixes. I also encourage beginners to learn to mix visually. It’s an important skill to build.

  • @cdnichols51
    @cdnichols51 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    As you were painting the orange skin of the pumpkins and working on creating a nice gradient from darker to lighter, they were wet the entire time, correct? In other words the piece never really dried since you did it all in once sitting? At the end of the video as you were blending the orange tones, were you dry brushing that? Thanks!

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      cdnichols51 They were glazes or layers that I blended out. The underlying layers were dry. Only the paint I was currently applying was wet. You can get subtle blends that way. I have an episode planned on specifically showing that glazing technique.

    I find the masking fluid leaves my paper very rough and it takes the paint really funny. Is there a difference in brands? I use Strathmore or Arches paper and only wait a few days before removing. Any tips appreciated. I will also see if you have a video on this subject.

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There can be. The masking fluid should be fresh (not years old) and not thinned very much or it soaks into the paper. As long as you have good paper it shouldn't be a problem.

    I have such a problem with shadows(how intense, where they go) and what colors to use. Do you just want to use a color close on the color wheel? I'm confused!

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The answer is... it just depends. It's a visual decision. There isn't one way (or color scheme) to do a shadow. It's often a darker version of the underlying color yes, but could be affected by reflected light. Light is the key. Observe what happens in actual situations and study how other artists treat various light. I do tend to use analogous cooler colors but depending on the light may keep intensity or decrease it to a more neutral shadow.

    This is a beautiful painting, I love it! Autumn is my favourite season, I'm looking forward to all the lovely autumnal colors! Also I wanted to let you know that because of your high opinion and others of the Silver Brush Black Velvet brand, I bought a set of 3 and selected a 4th. I must say that these brushes are truly worth their weight in gold, they are the best I have ever had the pleasure of owning! I'm curious about the Fredrix Canvas Boards for Watercolors, have you ever tried them? Or Aquaboard? Well thanks again for all the great videos and take care!

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I've used both Fredrix watercolor canvas and Aquaboard. Don't like the Fredrix at all. Just preference but I don't like giving my watercolors a canvas texture. Aquaboard is pretty cool to work on. Very forgiving and acts a lot like watercolor painting but with more lifting ability.

      +The Mind of Watercolor Alright, thanks. Have you ever tried a watercolor ground? I recently tried Arches 140lb Hot Press paper and didn't like it so I'm looking at trying the cold pressed eventually. I'm also considering on trying Fabriano, what kind of Watercolor sketchbook/album is your favourite? So far I've only tried Moleskine, I do like it and the paper is nice to work on but I'd like to try something different. I'm just looking to expand my experience. I recently ordered the Masters Brush Cleaner & Preserver, it's important to me to take care of my new brushes, how do you clean and care for your brushes? Sorry for so many questions, I really appreciate your expertise and it's helped me to make better decisions, thanks for the replies and take care!

      Never tried watercolor ground specifically but Aquaboard is coated with it so it acts similar from what I'm told. I like the Stillman & Birn Beta sketchbook and the Global Arts Handbook watercolor sketchbooks. Just wash your brushes on occasion. You don't have to wash them after every use. The Masters cleaner/preserver is good.

    A little off-the-track question, which camera do you use to shoot your videos? You shot them yourself or u have a professional videographer for it, your videos are really Mind-blowing :)

      I use three. Canon Vixia camcorder for head shots. Pentax K-01 for most overhead or over shoulder painting shots and most recently a GoPro Hero Silver 4 for some close up easel shots.
