For the most part you can walk everywhere in Vancouver and be safe usually lots of people out and about. Of course you should definitely avoid a few areas but overall for a big city it’s pretty safe.
It will depend on an individual’s comfort level and it’s important for people to know what to expect.

Dynasty dumpling house is where I always go in Vancouver for some xiao long bao! Too bad we don't really have any good place in Calgary for them 😢

Public transport in Vancouver is great so I wouldn’t say that you need a car. I’ve never had one while visiting.

It’s so freeing! TBH I’ve done three solo trips and they’ve all been to Vancouver because I’m familiar with the city, it’s a short plane right away and I can go for just the weekend. xx
