Matte Kudasai, in Japanese, literally means “Wait, please” or “Please wait for me”. Adrian Belew’s beautiful song was a moment of calm in what was usually the whirlpool of a King Crimson show. Time to kick back and listen to the poignant, melancholy lyrics that Belew was so good at. The Simmons hi-hat chirps away on the up beat, sidestick reliably on two and four; the slide guitar is surrounded by guitarist Fripp’s comfortable arpeggios, and for a few minutes, all is well with the world. “When, when was a night so long / Long, like the notes I’m sending…”
We all have choices. All drummers have four levers of control: temporal, metrical, dynamical and timbral. The way they choose to pull and push on those levers gives the player a different sounding voice and an identifiable style. Style seems to be an individual thing; the way an individual goes about doing things, in my case, on a drum kit. Allan Moore has called it a ‘patterning of sonic decisions’. Most drummers try to develop a style, of more or less interest to others.
My style on the drums? I articulate clearly and am an empathetic listener. I have plenty of ideas as to how to make things sound different, but that sometimes causes me to fidget, to give the appearance of trying things out, which usually I am. I change cymbal in the middle of a bar or a section for no good reason. I abandon possible ideas too quickly; I can be inconsistent with tempo and meter. In short, I’m a tad impatient. If I didn’t know me, and I was reviewing this drummer called Bill Bruford for some internet chat-room, I’d say that was a fair assessment.
If you’re a drummer, you’ll have a different set of stylistic characteristics. These are all indicative of my (or your) character as an individual, just transferred to a musical instrument. The instruments never lie. You choose when and how to pull which levers, and your stylistic personality appears. When you perform, you can be read like an open book. Your personality is on display for all to see (or hear), if they know the instrument and the kind of choices you’re making. Of course, the decisions you make are constrained by any number of other considerations: your own expectations, the expectations of others on stage and off, your technical ability, your mood, your motivation, love or loathing of the band-leader, and so on. But eventually, like it or not, your style emerges.
One way to look at it is as a sonic composite of what is said (content), the way it is said (expression), and the tone of voice in which it is said (touch, feel, and timbre). Some or all of these might be projected or sublimated by the individual in performance, in accordance with the perceived demands of the group, its leader, or the music to hand. In King Crimson, and particularly here in Matte Kudasai, style is very much projected by all four performers.

I just love how Fripp is in the dark, so serious and mysterious. And Belew almost laughing when he did seaguls sounds, mounting a landscape. So cool.

I saw Fripp solo a long time ago in a tiny club: a wall of electronics and his guitar to fill the room with shapes and colors and scents, all made of sounds. Amazing.

Am always touched by the atmosphere of this song. I know Discipline gets all the attention but of the Discipline era, Beat is my favorite. Three Of A Perfect Pair indeed, amazing era for KC.

I was introduced to Crimson via Three - it’s still an absolute favorite (Robert, something from that one on the (hopefully) next tour?). The slap bass on Sleepless was mind expanding, and Matte Kudasai is just sublime. So sorry I missed Belew on tour a year or so age. 😢

This has been one of my favorite King Crimson songs from the first time I heard it. The textures are so delicate, you feel like a single wrong note could ruin a rendition of the song.

Even though he's known mostly as a guitar player - what a great voice!. Spot on pitch, powerful and nuanced too. Adrian Belew is amazing. The other-worldly sounds he creates on his guitar are so unique and unbelievable- and his voice so unique.

Adrian with the 'seagulls', this was a treat a few times during the Pier concerts on the Hudson River, Manhattan, esp/ with the sun setting behind the crowd. It always seemed like a blues song but with a whole new approach. 'Walking On Air' I think is even a lil better, amazing.

    So deliciously good!
Just four blokes on a stage, all making sounds with familiar instruments and with plenty of breathing space, yet it sounds so rich; like you couldn't squeeze anything more in.
And thank you for your description, BB; as always, it adds to my understanding and appreciation, while filling my head with more questions. And we like that.

I know it's adolescent to analyze song lyrics, but I assume it's about an elderly woman in a nursing home in the US just waiting for the end. Thoughtful sentiment.

In my fantasy he's in Japan on tour and sending long notes thru bbs or fax and she's in the US waiting, falling asleep in a chair and the system is slow so on both their screens it says MATTE KUDASAI. And it's raining 80s neon pink.

This is the First Song Adrian was able to Attack lyrics and Melody to.. the First Pieces he and Robert worked, were the tipical hard Guitar compositions like Frame by Frame and Adrian was having an hard time because he didnt get yet, how to build a Song around that.. then, Robert came with these old chords, and everything changed.. the song is about him being far away from America and his wife, and him saying "Matte Kudasai" to her.. in that particolar moment Adrian was missing his wife so much, because of the musical difficulties..

Que decir de este King Crimson, la rompieron en los 80'. Renovados y ajustados a la época, como ninguna otra banda que venía de los 60" y/o 70".

I fortunately had the privilege to be at Merriwether Post Pavillion (outside of DC), to hear and see this... The Discipline album performed.. about 81, or (maybe 82).. The simple stage set was deeply colored lighting on the backdrop curtain.. It changed to a different color but you never noticed when. What an experience..
My mother (who was a harpist), liked this song...🎶👍 Thank you for posting this.. (and for the memory..).😌❣️
