Greetings! Give thanks for the informative vid. I live in South London. Do you have any recommendations for sourcing some grain spawn to start now. One that works well with woodchips? Bliss

Do you recommend putting a cover over this also. I saw another video where they used a form of netting. Also does this need watering daily?

the answer to both questions come down to climate. You would normally use a cover to stop frost damage or as a shade cloth in hot climates. If it is a hot climate then yes you may need daily watering.

Really enjoying the videos, I have an allotment in Suffolk which I took over from a traditional cultivate/ dig allotment holder two years ago, I do no dig and no chemical growing, my pathways are made up of wood chips and leaves from local tree surgeons waste and have noticed this year an abundance of mushrooms that have the look of toasted marshmallows popping up in all the pathways and corners of the allotment, I would like to do a bed of mushrooms but was a bit worried that the existing mushrooms would out compete any spawn that I use, but after watching your informative video I am now thinking that if I start a new bed with cardboard etc. the new spawn will be able to take hold before the existing network gets a chance to move in, would you agree? By the way I have just started one of your Blue-grey oyster mushroom home grow kits that I was given as a Birthday present from my youngest Son. Very excited to see how it goes. Warm wishes David. :-)

You will be fine! especially if you use oyster or winecap, they are very aggressive! glad to hear you are getting stuck into the mushroom growing....you won't go back!

@@urbanfarm-it Thankyou for the encouragement, I may have a go at winecap then. I imagine you just add fresh wood chip or straw at the end of the year ready for the next years growth. :-)

Excited to try this. Can I use straight wood shavings for all the substrate layers? Or should I have a layer of shavings and a layer of wood chips? Can portabella be grown in the same way? Or what other mushrooms would? I was going to ask about animals, insects etc that may eat or destroy the crops. Do you advise hoops and netting for this purpose? Thanks so much!

Hey! you can use a blend or straight wood shavings as long as that are a coarse grade. if the material iss too fine it will compact and become waterlogged easily. you can use this method but would require different substrates for portobello. I wouldn't worry about insects or animals, the mycelium is resilient!

So just before winter starts is too late? Or just in time to make my bed? Oh I'm growing different kinds of cubensis.

We don't grow cubensis, BUT as long as you create a nice deep bed to protect the mycelium from frost then all good!
