Mannequin Love being meh to him is baffling. That track has refused to leave my mind
Especially the ending with that whistle sounding synth😆
Yeah, it’s one one of my favorites for sure!
FOR REAL
That's cause it's fucking amazing. He's underselling the vocals because they're "airy" but fails to notice that the melodic HOOK of these vocals is world fucking class.
i felt the afterimage comments but mannequin love rules
One thing I like about Justice is that in recent interviews they already clearly admit that they are a disco band. They have also previously mentioned that they have always felt more attracted to rock music and everything oldie than to EDM. They really are music lovers and it shows
Was anyone under the impression justice was aligned with the edm movement? The opposite of that is kinda their identity
fantano fans are quite picky about everything, god forbid they have slightly different political views from you, they must be evil!🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
@@chazzbranigaan9354 well, there is still people waiting for a Cross 2 🥶
just because some people like/make edm doesn't mean they don't like "real" music, edm (even overblown generic festival music) is still music
@@chazzbranigaan9354 They innovated in the french electro/french touch/early electro house scene so I would say they've always been EDM.
I love how much of a pivot the record takes from Moonlight Rendez-vous onwards. It offers a change of pace from the rest of Justice's catalogue, taking things in a more progressive electronica route. The build from Muscle Memory into the Harpy Dream interlude adds a lot of tension. I wasn't crazy about Saturnine as a single but putting it after the Prog stretch from MRV through Harpy Dream really gives it a gravity that I felt was missing previously.
Saturnine works better in the context of the whole album, and I mean from the space electro opera of Muscle Memory to the glued transition between Harpy dream to Saturnine giving it a moment to return to "earth" kind of way with the more focused Miguel vocals on the mix rather than a instrumental power, and then to The End, wich ties to the end of the album perfectly.
I agree this album is very full-play dependent, the songs don’t work as well as singles
yeah it pivots into being really bad
It works well as an album; uninterrupted experience
It's the same logic with the combo 'Chromatica II + 911'. Isolated, the tracks don't say too much, but combined, they sound so PERFECT. You know as you know that they are made to be played together, it's a whole experience.
But of course, they can't just make a 8-minute length track, because people are gonna be pissed about it.
I feel like AVD gets too much hate because of how good *†* was
Yes, AVD is a good album but cross was too spectacular, then AVD got this exaggerated hate
I fug with AVD so much. I don't even compare the two.
AVD is one of my most played albums. Such positive and grand energy.
I feel like this could be said for all of Justice’s albums after Cross. It really helps if you view Cross as Justice experimenting with another style (like they’ve done in every one of their albums) rather than a baseline that they ditched afterwards.
It's the cross they bear.
I’ll take the score. Us 2000’s indie kids are eating well this year
Yh so much new music from 2000s bands / duo this year 🎉

Is justice considered indie?
@@alphalax7747 Indie in the early 00s was a pretty big tent situation --- the same kids rocking Bloc Party, Animal Collective and Death from Above 1979 also likely listened to Daft Punk and Justice. So, while I do not consider Justice "indie" but the sound of French House/Electronica definitely was adjacent
nothing indie about this one

No mention on “Muscle Memory”, but this is also a Fantano Favorite.
As much as people would like another album like Cross, Justice just… doesn’t seem to roll like that. They seem very much happy to try a different sound in each album. Each album sounds very unique, while also retaining some elements that make their sound special. I think it would be hard to make an album that lives up to, or exceeds what they made in cross. That album is basically lightning in a bottle, and Justice seems to know that. I also saw a recent interview just right before Hyperdrama that said that they always start each album with a clean slate, like they’re learning to make music again. Take that how you want, but yeah.
Personally speaking, I agree that cross is their most solid album, but in general, I love all their albums the same amount.
Same. I love how each album is a new take on their sound.
This is honestly my favorite thing about them. Utterly uncompromising and unique.
That's the fun part when you go watch them live, saw them yesterday and also WWW tour, the way they push the Cross era with the new songs is so good, their lives goes hard
theneedledrop always does that same thing. He critiques an album too early. First reactions to new albums have little merit to me. You have to let a new album settle in. It could take a week or a month until you realize it's a masterpiece. Come back in a while and tell me what you think of it. If you still feel the same way, you just have bad taste like theneedledrop.
@@Aladan57 Jay-Z brought up that same point in an interview. Music is something you gotta sit and take in.
That was the most 6/10 sounding 7/10 review I’ve ever watched
That's a really accurate statement. I agree with you. He tried to turn it around towards the end, but the opinions on the songs themselves were pretty harsh.
I think I'm hearing a disappointed Cross fan in him, that also realized how solid this album is when you're not expecting a Cross 2.
He's just mad they didn't make Cross II. Just like Woman, just like AVD.
this review felt like he was working backwards from a 9 and was just marking off two points for having weak features & mixing.
Could have been worse. I feel like they got brownie points for making something that doesn't outright suck but it's an extremely forgettable album with very few high points.
French artists need to start spending more money on leather jackets and cigarettes and not on good studio equipment
Embrace tradition
Preach
Oh, they definitly do. Look at what they wear and how they chain smoke when live lol
Check out Dmitri from Paris to get both.
they already do, hence why justice haven't had an album that goes beyond a 6 since cross.
Dear Alan is a tribute to Alan Braxe. They sampled the intro to Jets “Crush on You”, same sample as Braxe’s biggest song “Intro.” Classic record with Fred Falke.
Not really hearing the Jet's sample. But it mainly sampled "Dear Brian" from Chris Rainbow wich Alan Braxe sampled on "In Love With You" in his "The Paradise" band with singer Romuald (Wich is the song that inspired "Love S.O.S." on Woman, from the groove to hiring Romuald as a singer again)
A French House classic that Intro song is.
True classic shit. Greetings from Paris bro
I guess I'm lucky because I wasn't that familiar with Justice and I had never heard "Cross", so I had no preconceived ideas about them when I saw their live shows streamed from Coachella this month. I was essentially hearing them for the first time and...wow. At some point during the incredible energy of "Chorus Hyperdrive", watching Xavier delightfully feeding off the crowd's reactions, I became Justice's newest fan for life. I couldn't get on Ticketmaster fast enough to buy tickets to their Boston show. I've been going to concerts for over 50 years and it's rare for me to react like that when seeing an act for the first time. When "Hyperdrama" arrived a week later it was like hearing "Dark Side of the Moon" for the first time. The care, crafting and originality displayed on this record just blows me away.
also a new fan for same reasons, looove the album, going through their back catalog I can see the complaints as they do shift their style around every album but the live version studio releases are FIRE. Woman World Wide is sooo good.
@@DwayneMaxwell Just ordered WWW on your recommendation. I understand how long-time fans may wish for a continuation of Justice's traditional style, but their new live show that wowed Coachella and the meticulous crafting of their new album is obviously finding a whole new audience of fans if you and I are any indication.
Dude, I've been a fan of Justice since 05, and those two Coachella shows did the same to me! The hype was so massive! Slay city! 🤘🎉
I had never heard of them-and was walking by the outdoor theater at Coachella-caught my ear-I stayed for the whole show. Same reaction!
@@awendaw33 It's amazing. These guys come to Coachella for the first time since 2017 and own the place. Their Washington, DC and both NYC shows this Summer are sold out already with Boston and Philly close behind. You can bet a lot of those tickets were sold from their 2 sets at Coachella and word of mouth. I guess that's why they're legends. 😀
It's definitely their best album since Cross, honestly exceeding it in a couple of places. I did really enjoy AVD and Woman, but Hyperdrama's on another level- easy 9 imo.
100% all this

this album is definitely their best since their debut. still think cross is significantly better but this is the closest they’ve gotten to recapturing the magic from that record. neverender and afterimage are my favs.
Much significantly better... After listening to hyperdrama i tried listening to cross from start to finish... Cross is still such an exceptional record 🤯
I would go as far to say Hyperdrama is better than Cross. Cross has had so much time already for songs to be considered iconic. I think after enough time many on hyperdrama will be too. Clearly this is produced much better than Cross. It’s much more refined
Afterimage is a Ghostbusters end credits song, and its amazingly replayable.
@@Kevin_Ait’s produced better but the dirtiness and throwing shit at the wall in the production of cross makes gives it a lot more magic than hyperdrama
@@47fortyseven47 Hyperdrama had a ton of magic and amazing moments without relying on any of the noise and abrasiveness of cross
Love the album. Something I think is lost in context though is how Justice albums are made with live performances in mind. They give us fire stand alone disco tracks/albums to then sample them into the best house performances like access all arenas and woman worldwide.
Disco album Alley-oop into live show slam dunk.
I think anyone who saw the Coachella performance will appreciate this album more.
I watched the Coachella performance on TH-cam and I was blown away by it.
Completely agree with this.
Something important to mention about Woman Worldwide is that it's not a remix album as much as it is just a studio-recorded version of their live albums. If you found the more intense style appealing, it is definitely worth checking out their live albums for Cross and A.V.D as they scratch a similar itch and there's some absolute stand-out moments exclusive to them. (One of my favourites being the latter half of Horsepower where the drop is turned DEAFENINGLY loud.)
Yep, was very surprised he wasn't aware that they do this for every album. I've always felt like each of their studio albums was designed to provide something different for their live albums. You get the hard synths from Cross, guitars, baroque stylings and choral elements from AVD, a ton of funk and poppy vocals from Woman. Whilst AVD and Woman might be weaker than Cross (idk I find myself going back to them much more often than Cross these days), each live album has been significantly better than the previous.
The live version of Horsepower is forever burned in my brain after seeing them in 2013. My second concert ever!
As a long time fan, I've always been so excited to see how they seamlessly weave their new material into their live sets.
I'm not sure how they do their other live albums, but I hate hearing the crowd in the background. Woman Worldwide changed that for me, and in a positive way, because it's like a studio-recorded live album without the annoying fans yelling and screaming in the background.
@@CalculyticCuber I definitely agree that the removal of the crowd in WWW helps the album, but at the same time some of my favourite moments in ACTU and AAA are from crowd interactions (like the crowd filling in the lyrics during We Are Your Friends in ACTU.) Ideally we could get both versions, but that’s very much wishful thinking.

probably the best review from Hyperdrama i've seen, cuz Mojo's and Pitchfork ones were just crying over the fact Justice doesn't sound exactly like they did in Cross
Yeah, clearly they just don't want to sound like that anymore!
Pitchfork’s review was such a load a dogshit😂 the writer clearly wanted to just make that “switching out cigarettes for vapes” comment
here is the thing, when a new album doesn't sound exactly like a very successful predecessor, it's a loss. But then, when a new album sounds exactly the same as some very successful predecessor, people whine about being repetitive and lacking creativity. Like, one simply can't win!
There's a concept in Hyperdrama that I really liked, it's the fact that they're mixing somber and heavy sounds with ethereal disco cuts. A lot of tracks feature synths, stabs and drums straight out of 90s hardcore techno (hell, they even sampled some of it on Generator and One Night All Night) but they twist these sounds to create dance songs with them, and it works beautifully.
It's a much more interesting approach than just replicating the sound of 70s prog rock (AVD), 70s disco (Woman), or 70s movie soundtracks (Escapades) but I wished they pushed the concept a bit further to fully explore what they could do with this sound.
afterimage is such a banger. slaps even more when you put it on past midnight
Instant classic, along with Neverender, Mannequin Love, and Saturnine.
Audio, video, disco was groundbreaking to me. tracks that were actually songs that were absolutely memorable and catchy. underrated for sure. Women was also groundbreaking for me and set the stage for other bands to copy and explore the nostalgia of the 70s and 80s. Justice proved themselves to be brilliant and ahead of the curve. I personally will continue to listen and explore everything they put out. they are geniuses in my book and sometimes it takes time to get on their level.
Cross was exceptional, and I don't think it's reasonable to expect the same thing 17 years later. I love Hyperdrama for what it is, and it is a significant improvement over the last two Justice albums. Dear Alan just hits all the right spots.
It's my album of the year so far. 10/10
He was wrong about Afterimage. It was my 3rd fav tune
Edit: I do agree they peaked with Cross
I saw the live show at Coachella W2 and it was spectacular! I feel like the Hyperdrama era can only improve from adding new mixes to the live show and the eventual live album release. Glad melon liked the album for the most part.
I can already tell you they're gonna mix "generator" with "genesis", somehow. I did it, it sounds great.
Gonna be seeing them in July, hella excited to hear it
I believe coachella was kinda "mid" compared to other live shows because the album wasn't out yet so they couldn't spoil new tracks and mix them with other.
maybe the live show will be totally remade for the tour with these new songs
@@aquinoguhI think for fans who saw Woman Live, yes. For me who had never seen them before? I was ELATED!! I am really looking forward to seeing how the show evolves though since I do think there is room for improvement.
I feel some of tracks may be intentionally subdued so their live, remixed versions hit that much harder. As a Justice fan, I've more or less enjoyed all their albums but I live for the live performances - some tracks translate in an obvious manner (e.g. Generator, Incognito) but I appreciated Afterimage being dialed up to 11. Also why Woman Worldwide is a personal fav
This is exactly it. AVD makes perfect sense in the context of their live sets. I'm really bored of people dumping on the albums when their live sets are monstrously good
Really thought "Incognito" would be among his favourites. His thoughts were very positive towards the song.
i think he just forgot to add it lol
6:22, "ahh-perator" the lyrics are "I (stretch out the length of I) remember" lamo, funniest miss hear of lyrics ever. (song is neverender)
Audio, Video, Disco is still my favorite album. They sound like a full band and instrumental AF.
This is one of my favorite electronica albums in a long time, but I can definitely get behind a lot of your criticisms. They can do better, but as a huge fan of all of their work, this is a fantastic LP that combines all eras of their discography into a unique sonic experience. Dear Alan will definitely be an overlooked album cut, but its fantastic and one of their best for sure, glad you mentioned it.
I really think this album is the closest we’ll get to another RAM for a long time, and I say that from the perspective of loving RAM, Daft, and growing up on Justice. I honestly think Cross was lightning in a bottle, but their mixes at live shows proves all of their albums really are a part of their sound.
And the comment about not making fun dance tracks… idk dude go see them live right now, I think you’re gonna dance

Personally I don’t think they produce music to please the masses as you seem to suggest(3'55). I think that they create music that they like, and this new album is a way for them to break down barriers, after the pandemic, with, indeed, more aggressive tones but which is in itself only an evolution of their style linked to their state of mind at the time of the birth of this album.
Many people wanted another album like Cross and to some extent Hyperdrama feels like a natural successor. These same people often miss the magic of AVD and Woman- two incredible albums that go in unique directions but are truly timeless.
It makes me happy seeing him finally liking a studio Album Justice have made! Hyperdrama is definitely great!

easiest 8/10 in my life tbh. i can't put this album down
Just because it's not called Cross, doesn't mean it deserves a "Not Good" melon.
I feel it's pretty disingenuous to expect a duo like Justice to churn out dancefloor-ready bangers to fill an entire album, especially after making music for almost 2 decades. This is an artist album first and foremost, a richly-produced home listening experience instead of just a collection of DJ cuts...and even speaking *as* a DJ, that's not disappointing in the slightest.
I was NOT expecting a 7
So happy with this release. I agree with all your best tracks, and I really like one night/all night and afterimage as well. This is going to be on constant repeat this summer for me.

As a French electro fan (Justice, SebastiAn, Gesaffelstein, Mr. Oizo...) he has ALWAYS been a bully with them, his reviews are basically him telling them EVERY TIME:
"oh I see what you did there, artistic exploration and cohesive vision instead of the compressed and compact electro I like? Here's a bad score, you know what you did and you're not fooling anyone with these copies of other music. Gimme weird electro. GIMME."

I loved the hell out of this album!!! This has been a great year for music!!!
DAMN. looking at the background knowing how getting a 7 feels like lmao
It’s pretty hard to top the entrance Justice made with Cross, but I think Hyperdrama is their best release since that incredible debut.
Not sure how I feel about this take, me and my friends absolutely love the atmospheric style of Afterimage, One Night/All Night and Mannequin Love. It's a highly varied LP, and the more subdued and complex tracks serve to deepen the experience of the album as a whole. But it's a dance record! Many see Justice as spiritual successors to Daft Punk, who tonally, certainly had buzz and intensity, but could hardly be called dark and heavy. One of the most famous tracks of Cross was D.A.N.C.E, which is as bright as it gets - but it's a great song. The other most popular track on the album was Genesis, which is the polar opposite in tone. I think that speaks volumes to Justice's ability to imbue a broad range of dance music styles with a highly distinct identity - one they've built upon meticulous microsample-based production, and genuine visionary musicianship. I don't think this album is quite at the level of Cross, but it's by far their best work in years. 8.5/10
I wish they innovated a bit more on this album. I was most captivated by the mixes.
Mannequin love was easily my favorite track and I don’t usually gravitate towards vocals when listening to music but the way they come in at the start after the incognito buildup and fade out is so refreshing! not to mention they are catchy as all hell although that’s a pretty subjective opinion, and it feels like the duo builds the perfect support in the production, it all melds together perfectly to my ears. I feel like it didn’t seem to repetitive either with them mixing up different sections, the energy and flow of the song was fantastic and I feel like it was a perfect length for what they had
I love that you seem to still enjoy making reviews after all these years Melon and rhat you and Cal have found such a fruitful creative partnershio. You and your team are awesome, I appreciate all the effort and consistency 👍
review the new Cindy Lee album bro please
I have lost all hope that he will review it.
Such an amazing album. Justice is back stronger than ever.
they actually managed to get some really good artists to feature on this album, but i feel like the instrumentals are so lacking in depth and character..
the features on Cross all worked so well, it's strange that they're not able to bring that level of track layering back into the mix... especially with how decent these features are... it almost feels like wasted opportunities
Everything is in your face at the front of the mix on Cross, but if you listen closely, most of their tracks do have crazy deep mixes. There is actually a lot going on, it is just more subtle/tasteful.
Hyperdrama is the album I needed this year.
Not as good as Cross for sure but it is really close behind in #2 in my book.
The bassline in Dear Alan really slaps it should be illegal lol.
This album and Chromeo's Adult Contemporary are the 2024 releases I just can't stop listening, it makes me feel like I am young and naive again lol !
Woman Worldwide is one of my favourite albums, it still goes hard AF. So much fun to listen to.
Is beautiful to hear how the enigmatic and evil sequence of synths of Afterimage turns into a solid background with the baseline for the vocals. I play that track in repeat infinitely when driving. Also Generator is a big hug for the one of us that loved songs like Stress of Cross.
They're definitely going to come out with a live album (as they always do) that is 2X better than the album.
Cross has to be a 10/10 right reviewer man? I begging for a cross review.
if this album was called Hood's Hyperest Drama you would've given it an 8
Sounds like someone didn’t update their taste since 2007
I don’t know any other band where people compare every new album to their first album more than Justice. If 20 years later and they haven’t made an album that sounds like their first album obviously whatever influence they had to make that is not there anymore.
Cross is the only album I can recommend to people when I think electro disco. All Justice's other albums sounded like a desperate attempt to be different from it.
