Great suggestion! I remember picking that album up when it came out. I was blown away. After having been blown away by Endtroducing, Since I met you just took sampling to a whole new level.
I remember seeing in an interview, they spoke about why the compression is so harsh. They said they simply didn't know how compressors work, so they overdid it with the threshold and makeup gain. Sounds amazing today as it did when it came out.
I also remember fellow French artist and label mate at the time, SebastiAn, getting some credit for introducing them to heavy use of compression. Important thing to remember about the French electronic circuit is that these guys share tips and methods with each other. French touch is heavily connected

This album absolutely blew my mind when I first heard it. I could not believe the editing and sampling. Incredible stuff. So glad you covered this album in detail.
Shoutout to my college roommate Will who used to blast this album almost every day! He was the one who got me into electronic stuff and really enhanced my music studies. I hope he achieved his dream of running a French bakery ...
This album caught me off guard 4 years ago and you are right. There is no way to just listen to one track. You can feel robbed if you don't finish the album. I love it. The speed, the brightness, the beautiful violence of the strings throughout. Ohh! Ohh my. It's nearly narcotic.
So amazed this track is being broken down by you! This came out when I was studying sound engineering and I brought it in to show the staff. They were so jealous and all went red in the face. It was such a new sound that really influenced plenty of music afterwards. Everyone wanted that chorused bass sound, distorted hats, white noise snare, quickshot samples and heavily artistic sidechain compression.
Interestingly a lot of that was going on in drum n bass (distorted hits, heavily chorused bass), but applied to the template of house/disco it takes on an entirely new form. Love Cross, it’s so heavy and full!
@@Artersa Not surprising at all, given how drum and bass was always a ongoing kitchen sink research project on how to make dance music (specifically uk garage) even more danceable.
@@morganmensa5129 Oh, there was this whole subgenre of "dnb" called "jump up" that really spearheaded casually distorting hi-hats and chorusing of the bass. Just search a "jump up classics" playlist on youtube. My favorite artists from that era are G Dub and its member Original Sin, as well as his brother Taxman. DJ Hazard is a special mention, too, but he feels more conventional in his technique somehow. Famously had to seek help mixing his first digital tracks.
Not only their music is good, their show is amazing. I had the chance to saw them live the other day and oh God, all the lights and movements are so full of little details, just like the micro-samples of this album. If you can, you need to see them live at least once in your life.
This is one of those albums that is so perfect that despite not being that into the style in general it shines through so strong it can't help but be a favourite
Loving how far this channel has come, that you are breaking down the art of sampling across all Genres, and that you are giving shine to "Newjack" because that song slaps and these yougins need to learn of its greatness. 👏🏾
I've been hooked on your videos since day one and I've watched every video. Best channel on TH-cam. Much love from Cape Town, South Africa and I'm watching this under a tree as I feed the lions.
Would have never known these things about this album without you. What a beautiful sonic tapestry Justice created, an album I'll listen to as long as I live.
400 Samples? Jez!!! That's more than what The Beastie Boys did with the album "Paul's Boutique". I'm also surprised you didn't mention Jay-Z sample "D.A.N.C.E" for his classic jam "On To The Next One".
the first justice song i heard wasnt D.A.N.C.E., it was "We are your friends" being played on the PA at an indoor skatehall hearing that booming in a large building while on a board or BMX is something else i tell ya
Same. First Justice track I heard was the "We Are Your Friends" remix, with the accompanying awesome music video. It was before (Cross) came out and I still remember when Cross finally dropped and listening to it for the first time. Go and see Justice live if you ever have the chance.
When I was in college bumping Daft Punk and Justice circa 2013, I was in a program that taught music technology. Hearing this album was made in GarageBand, as someone learning FL Studio and ProTools, was fucking mind blowing.
On the same day as the new album? Nice timing! Also, thanks for all the new tracks to add to my Spotify Playlist! Have to pause every so often just to do so before I forget, lol.
I remember buying this cd when it dropped lol This album is one of my favorites off all time. Thank you so much for covering this album. Salute to you. Salute to Justice.
The way you break everything down into processable chunks is insane. This channel is goated and honestly underappreciated, you deserve so many more subs.
Really enjoying this! Definitely on a Justice kick after hearing the new stuff! Side mention; Super appreciate how the sponsor segment is actually very relevant to the topic and not just an add for a vpn, freemium game, brilliant or some other distracting nonsense.
I've followed this band since the beginning when Waters dropped. I was a huge Ed Banger fan at the time, and was very excited for Cross to drop. I kid you not it's probably been played in its entirety at least once every two weeks lol. I think many of us were absolutely floored when this hit our ears for the first time. Everyone seems to compare these guys to Daft Punk alot, and I see some similarities... I just feel Justice is on a different level. I thoroughly enjoyed this break down. Very well paced, and fun. Love all of the Push demos! Very cool way to captivate us. Awesome job! 🤘
I wasn't expecting a deep diving on this album, but I'm happy that it happened. Till this date it's my favorite Justice album. As an electronic music fan I can say there's no many albuns like this. Pure quality.
